All colored by nepsah

Opens: February 1st
Closes: February 17th, 11:59 PM EST

Times are changing, and fast! Two of these Nightmares have been dating for a long time, and they've been interested in adding their best friend into their relationship, but they haven't been able to figure out how. Was it societal pressures? Shyness?? Maybe this new world - a strange and foreign place - will bring them all together for comfort.

Note: All three of these Nightmares have matching heart hip markings.

          Instructions:
          • Find a Partner!
          • Decide which two Juniors are already dating, those two will be the kids you're roleplaying as!
          • Together, write a roleplay response that indicates how they ask the third Nightmare to be in their relationship.
          • Take lore into consideration! The Academy is a strange and new place, these three will be out of their element in every way possible... and depending on the combinations, even back home their relationship might have been controversial.
          • Once you've written your response, PM it to Cinnamon Panda.
          • Please title the PM "Red String of Fate".
          • You will decide who the 3rd Nightmare goes to!

          Rules:
          • This contest is completely free.

          • Staff may not enter this contest!
          • Whining, guilt-tripping, or generally misbehaving over the contest will result in you being disqualified.

Brown Bakeneko Name: Maalik
White Bakeneko Name: Serenity
Naga Name: Indira
Entry: Indira sat close to their love, the end of their tail twining between the bakeneko's split tail even as they laced their fingers with hers. All of this was still so new to the both of them that Indira still felt a shock of risk at being so close to Serenity where they could be seen. They had started dating before the Swirling Storms stopped, though as they were different species their relationship was frowned upon by both sides. But Indira and Serenity had grown up together, alongside their very good friend Maalik. But when the naga and the white bakeneko had realized that 'friends' just didn't describe how they felt about each other, they were afraid that Maalik would take the view of the majority of their races and look down on them for the way they felt. So they had kept it quiet. They had sneaked longing glances at each other, brushed hands as they passed in hallways, stolen secret kisses in hidden alcoves.

But here in Below, things were different. Or so Indira felt, anyway. "We should tell Maalik," they said suddenly. They turned to look at Serenity to better gauge her reaction to their words, hoping that this wasn't something they would disagree on.

Serenity's ears twitched at the sound of her love's voice, turning to look at them with a soft smile on her lips. "You think so? Think he'd be okay with it? With us?" She chewed her lip, leaning closer to Indira. She loved the naga very much, but there had always been something about Maalik that had drawn her, too. She didn't want him to think less of her or of Indira because of the way they felt for each other, and she didn't want to lose Indira because she also had a crush on their friend.

Indira nodded. "I think he'd be okay with it. I mean, we were always careful before but here... We haven't been very stealthy. Not really," they said and nuzzled Serenity's cheek lightly. "I think he might have noticed for himself." And it wasn't very fair of them to leave him out so often because they wanted to cuddle... Not that Indira would be averse to adding Maalik to their cuddle pile. They had always enjoyed the company of the brown bakeneko but it was Serenity that they loved. Even so, Indira had also felt an attraction to Maalik. "We should tell him," they repeated. But maybe they could be more. "Do you think...if he's okay with us...what do you think about possibly...asking him to join us?" they asked quietly. This time, Indira was almost afraid to look up at her. Afraid that she would think they were betraying her by feeling like this for the other bakeneko as well as her.

Serenity blinked, a little startled at the question Indira had asked of her. "I...would you want that? Do you...like Maalik?" she murmured. Then, afraid that her question could be taken wrong, she hurriedly added, "Because I kind of like that idea. It would be nice," she said. "To be a triad with Maalik. We've all been friends forever, and here in this new place we could all use the comfort and the affection." She smiled then, thinking about a cuddle pile with all three of them. It was a nice feeling. "Tomorrow. Let's do it tomorrow."

Indira relaxed as Serenity really seemed into the idea of them as a triad. A warmth spread through them as they snuggled closer to the white bakeneko. "Tomorrow," they agreed with a smile.

Brown Bakeneko Name: Simeon
White Bakeneko Name: Gwyneira
Naga Name: Shani
Entry: A bag hung from Shani's shoulder's, carrying all the personal items they planned to bring with them on the journey. The physical items didn't matter so much as the person beside them whose hand they currently held. They would never have left if Simeon wasn't coming with them. There mind was on another person on Shani's mind though, someone they didn't want to leave behind.

"There's still time. We should find Gwyn and ask her to come with us," Shani said. "It's the perfect chance!"

Simeon looked over at Shani and smiled. It was exciting to think that they would be leaving together. That they would explore the big new world. Free of their pasts, free of all the things that held them back. Except one thing, one thing he couldn't wrap his mind around leaving. "And say what exactly? What could the two of us possibly say to get her to want to leave her family? To want to leave everything and be with us?" His eyes grew tired as he had thought this before, he loved Gwyn sure enough but he knew the Neko culture better than Shani. "You just don't understand," he shook his head dismissively. The idea that a Neko so sought after would leave her position for a regular tabby and a Naga of all things was unthought of, unheard of. "Besides, you know her family's matchmaker wouldn't allow it." He squeezed Shani's hand supportively.

"What could they do when we're all the way across the Swirling Storms? None of them are willing to cross," Shani scoffed, though they squeezed Simeon's hand back, grateful for the silent support. "You know Gwyn isn't like that. She's never shown any real interest in anyone else after all this time. I doubt she'll change her mind on the say-so of a matchmaker, no matter how popular." Shani shifted restlessly, coiling their tail. "You know she'd come if we just asked," they added softly. There was a slight pause before they said "asked", hinting at something more than the obvious.

Simeon chuckled at that nodding. "I don't know if they are a professional matchmaker, but perhaps they will find someone perfect for her." He knew what Shani was getting at and looked down at the ground. How could he admit his true feelings to Gwyn after all this time? It wouldn't matter anyway, he knew that he wasn't good enough. He knew that he, they, weren't what was best for her. At least not as far as his society had raised him to believe. He really did believe that telling Gwyn what he felt, telling her to come with them...it would just mess everything up. "Though I suppose you are right dear. It's a now or never kind of thing... but what do we say?"

Shani shifted again, using their free hand to tug at a strand of their hair in a thoughtful gesture. "The truth," they suggested, mulling over the exact words in their head. "Gwyn knows we love her, but we've never told her what kind of love it is." Shani smiled a little sadly. "We thought it was for the best, that maybe she could find someone she could be happy with, and would come to love them. We knew if we asked before now, she'd be open to ridicule and...," Shani's voice suddenly broke. They pulled their hand away for a moment to bury their face in both hands, then turned and hide against Simeon's shoulder. It took a few seconds before they could talk again. "The world is so big now, Simeon. There has to be somewhere out there we go can to be happy, all three of us."

Simeon was about to say so many things. He was going to explain how he wouldn't want Gwyn to go through what he went through; the complete write off of his family, the fight that cost him his eye...all these things he couldn't bring him self to bring up because he knew how they would hurt Shani. He could tell by the break in their voice, the way that they curled into him. He placed a gentle kiss on Shani's forehead.

He had always seen himself as protecting Gwyn from all that by not telling her their true feelings. Perhaps now that they were leaving he could forget all that. Lay it all down. After all he had heard rumors that hybrids were not only accepted, but seen as no different out in the world unknown to them. "Yes, we shall tell her. Hurry now there isn't much time." He looked over to Shani nervously.

Shani needed a moment to get a hold of their emotions before they could look up from Simeon's shoulder. They tried to be strong, but the day Simeon had come to them with bandages on their face, right eye all but useless, had been the worst day of their life. Deep down they felt like it was their fault; it was a guilt Shani would likely bear their whole life. That was the reason they had kept their feelings for Gwyn a secret. How could you knowingly consign someone you loved to a life of torment?

Shani took a deep breath and lifted their head from Simeon's shoulder. They gently touched their nose to his. "Yes, let's," they said softly, then pulled back and took Simeon's hand. Then, together, they went to find their beloved Gwyn.

Brown Bakeneko Name: Thomas
White Bakeneko Name: Sidhe
Naga Name: Khalil
Entry:
Thomas and Kahlil had been friends since they were Freshlings, wandering around the town, having adventures and getting into trouble. One such adventure had Kahlil giving Thomas a boost over the wall to an upper class back garden where they accidentally met their new best friend; Sidhe. Kahlil had pushed Thomas a bit too hard and the kitten had fallen over the wall and onto the mostly white female. Luckily she forgave them...after some profuse apologizing on Thomas's part.

As it turned out, Sidhe's mother had married up from the middle class and had actually been really good friends with Thomas's mother, she didn't mind her youngest daughter playing with Thomas and Kahlil. She even helped her husband relax a little about the harmless fun the Freshlings were having.

As the three of them grew older, feelings started to develop between them; to them it was merely a natural progression of their close bond. When they went to ask their parent's permission, however, the three friends hit a huge roadblock. Both Sidhe's parents and Thomas's parents were fine with them courting; they were close enough in class and, unlike her big siblings, Sidhe wasn't pure white. There was nothing preventing her father from giving his permission. However, both sets of parents also agreed that dating a Naga was an absolute and resounding 'NO'.

The three friends were distraught, not daring to even sneak behind their parent's backs. They didn't want to break what they had won...not to mention they didn't want to be banned from seeing Kahlil period. When passage to the academy opened, however, they all jumped at the chance. All of them begged and hounded their parents until the adults gave in and allowed them to go.

When they entered the academy, they huddled together, completely out of their element, but happy they were together. The school was even accommodating enough to let them all room together. They didn't know what the regular policy was, being new, but they appreciated it. As soon as they got to their room, they all collapsed on a bed.

Thoughts, however, had been plaguing Sidhe; what if they drifted apart in this strange new world? What if someone caught Kahlil's eye and, Kahlil thinking Thomas and Sidhe weren't interested, went with the other someone. But...what if their fondness for each other had only come about because they had such limited choices back home? No. She refused to believe that...still, they needed to show Kahlil their true intentions and feelings now that they were away from their parents. It was weird making a direct decision to go against them, but distance gave Sidhe courage. “Thomas, come look at this!” She called suddenly, pulling the other Bakeneko into the bathroom.

Before Thomas could voice his confusion, Sidhe hissed at him to hush. “Thomas, we should confess to Kahlil. I know our parents forbade us back home but...we aren't home any more. We're in this huge new world now, and what if someone takes Kahlil from us because we were too scared to ask them to join us. Too scared of our parents and the old traditions from our tiny world?”

Thomas blinked and swished his tail; go against their parents and traditions? That was kind of a huge step. Thomas eyed the closed bathroom door, thinking of all the years they'd been together and the unfairness of not being able to include Kahlil passed a few extra loving cuddles. He turned back to Sidhe and nodded. “Okay, lets do this. But...how are we going to tell them? Just asking if he'll join us sounds kind of lame and...like a second thought?I don't want Kahlil to feel that way.”

Sidhe agreed, just asking Kahlil wouldn't feel right; it wouldn't be enough. Kahlil had to know that they were serious about their feelings, that she and Thomas really wanted Kahlil to join them. But what would be enough to show Kahlil that they were serious? What could they do that Kahlil would have no way but to understand their feelings?

“What if we do the dance for Kahlil? The Naga dance to show affection, right? If we try and say what we mean in Kahlil's customs, then he'd have to believe that we are sincere.” Of course doing the actual dance would be a bit embarrassing, but she wanted to make sure her feelings were taken seriously. “We kind of know how it goes, Kahlil showed it to us one time, remember?”

When they left the bathroom, Thomas poked Kahlil. “Hey, we have something to show you.” He said, a teeny blush warming his cheeks. He skittered back to Sidhe and the two of them started the dance. They were a little stiff and awkward, missed steps, added in extra on account that they didn't have snake tails, and generally made a mess of the whole thing; eventually the two cats gracelessly bumped into each other, and both ended up on the ground.

Kahlil laughed softly, watching his best friends hit the floor was hilarious. “Guys, it's more like this.” The Naga slid seemlessly into the dance, weaving gracefully and almost hypnotically in front of the two Bakeneko. The two cats watched, mesmerized by the fluidity Kahlil showed in his dance. The Naga slowed to a stop, and smiled down at their friends before the realization finally hit him. “Wait...” he blushed suddenly, "Waaaait. WAIT. D-does this mean what I think it means?!"

Thomas and Sidhe nodded. “We want you to be our third. Please?” They held out their arms to their best friend and Kahlil quickly slithered to them, wrapping as much of his tail around Thomas and Sidhe as possible and cuddling close to his best friends and mates.
