It was one of those one-to-two day only baking classes that boasted the teachings of interesting techniques and new styles of baking. Miranda had attended because she interested to see what all it was about. Unfortunately she'd come alone. Almost everyone in the classroom had come in with a partner of some sort but not her.
The class guide hadn't said anything about it being a partner-style course.
When it came time for everyone to start baking the instructor started pairing the people that had come alone all willy-nilly.
"You and ... .You..." The instructor pointed at Miranda and then at Carson.
Well... At least she didn't have to struggle to find someone to work with? She moved over toward the man that was deemed fit for her to work with. He seemed friendly enough.
"Heya! I'm Miranda, pleased to meet ya." Gotta start off with introductions before baking with someone, it was an unspoken rule. Silverah I'm such a space cadet. I'm sorry. Let me know if I need to change or edit anything!

"Carson," her partner replied, nodding politely. Carson likewise hadn't realized this would be a partners course - although he supposed he should have expected it, as most of the other baking classes he'd taken had been. He'd picked this one specifically because he thought it wouldn't be, though - was it so wrong to want to learn some advanced techniques to impress his girlfriend? Oh well. He'd make the best of it. "Looks like you're stuck with me," he added with a genial chuckle. "I wonder what we're starting with? Hopefully not fondant." Ew, fondant.

"Gross," she responded with a bit of a grin. He seemed alright so far, at least he wasn't being a major grump about it. She leaned a bit on the counter space allotted to her and stared at the utensils as the instructor went along.
She glanced over at Carson and chuckled a little before she mirrored his statement, "Fondant tastes gross anyways, at least most fondant I ever tasted. I dunno about you. Also stupid finicky to work with."
Especially when she was stressed out. Fondant and stress do not mix well.
The instructor went along once assured the class had settled again, "For this lesson I am going to teach you guys how to make some marshmallow frosting to go on a s'mores style cake~. If any of you have questions, please ask now. Oh... And please don't set the kitchen on fire with the torches," she glared over at a set of class participants that were futzing around with the kitchen torches supplied for the class. The 'students' put the torch down innocently and pretended that they weren't being glared at by the instructor.

"Yeah," agreed Carson with a shudder. "I've never had good fondant." Which was probably why Elke refused to work with it. As the person responsible for taste-testing most of his girlfriend's recipes, Carson was grateful for small mercies. "Anyway," he continued, looking over the ingredients. "This looks pretty good." Marshmallow frosting and s'mores-flavored cake was definitely the kind of thing he could take back to Elke and impress her with. It wasn't really the right time of year to feature it as a specialty cupcake, at least not in his opinion... but it would be a good recipe to keep in his back pocket. "I guess we lucked out." He started measuring out miniature marshmallows. "So," asked Carson, leveling the cup off, "What's your baking experience like, Miranda?"

"It'll be interesting, guess the torches will be used to toast the frosting? Never got to use one before!" She seemed strangely excited, but probably because it was simply a new experience and not because of a love for flame.
She pulled a couple of bowls toward herself and began separating egg whites from the yolk. "Oh, I'm just a dabbling hobbyist at best," Miranda laughed a little bit. "What about you? You got any baking chops?"
"I usually bake with my mom, sometimes my brother and sister are there to 'help', too," she grinned a little. Silverah Recipe. Shoulda linked it earlier OH WELLS. Was trying to find something new and exciting to do, this seemed to fit.

"Yeah, can't say I've ever cooked with an open flame before," agreed Carson, eying the torch. He wasn't sure that he unilaterally trusted every single person here not to burn the classroom to the ground... but that as a concern to leave to their instructor. He didn't need to be on high alert right now. "My girlfriend's a baking genius," he confided, setting their station's saucepan under the faucet. "I'm mostly around as eye candy - apparently, my presence helps sell cupcakes." "We do a weekly farmers' market stall," he explained, setting the water on the stove. "I figured I'd come learn something to surprise her with."

"Same. I'll try not to burn off your eyebrows or something," She promised with a bit of a grin.
Maybe he should handle the torch just in case? Eh. They'll probably both get a try at it.
Miranda kept grinning and nodded, "It's nice to have someone in your life that is a genius at that sorta thing. You get to taste all the awesome things they make!" She tilted her head a little, "Y'know I never went to the farmer's market before, but maybe I'll have to come check it out and see your eye candy skills at work."
If his presence truly helps sell cupcakes? It'd be something she'd like to truly see, but then she was probably taking it a bit too literal.
"That's very sweet! I just... wanted to learn something new," Miranda started to measure out the corn syrup once she was done seperating the eggs. "Though I guess I could surprise my little brother and sister with this."

"My eyebrows," said Carson, with mock seriousness, "Have survived a lot worse." However, he had to consider that if that blow torch wound up pointed at either of their faces, they'd have ******** up so badly that they deserved whatever happened next. "She uses me as her taste-tester all the time," he confessed, messing with the burner. "Some of the combinations she comes up with are... questionable. Like, a straight-up olive oil-flavored cupcake. It was like greasy cornbread." He shuddered reflexively - never again. "I bet they'd love playing with fire," he suggested. "Kids love playing with fire, or so I'm told."

Miranda let out a small giggle, "I am sure they have, but I don't think you want to try having them burnt off any time soon.
"W-what? Ewwww. EWWWW.... Oh my gosh," She was imagining it now and apparently her imagination was quite vivid, because she was making an arrangement of interesting faces. "I hope she never tries that again. That just sounds horrible."
She respected the 'experimentation' but the results didn't seem like they went over very well.
"Surprisingly? My sister doesn't get to much mischief until her twin brother does. My little brother is such a little jerk sometimes," she said in a tone that was mixed with a bit of frustration but also love. Miranda began combining the sugar, egg whites, and corn syrup into a bowl one after the other.

Carson nodded, laughing softly. "She promised not to," he assured Miranda, "and her other combinations are much better. Seriously, come by the stall sometime and I'll give you a sample on the house. Elke's a baking genius - it was just an off batch." He considered the recipe pamphlet for a moment, and then got back to work. "How old are they?" Carson asked, trying to keep the conversation going. "I have a sister - she's seventeen and kind of a hellion." Though... he was sure that the unlimited funds and the small measure of fame and critical acclaim, mixed with a heaping spoonful of daddy issues was what made Nell act out. Also, she wasn't that bad. But it made for a better story to say she was. Pales Sorry about the wait!!!! Meta + Job search + real life theater obligations /cries

"That's good." Miranda replied. She couldn't imagine why anyone would want to continue to make them other than for pranking reasons, and even then one had the issue of trying to hide the oily mess it truly was and ...
.. She was thinking too hard about this.
Miranda paused to think a moment, "They are six," she answered with a small chuckle. "It's going to be a fun time when puberty happens, I am sure." She took a moment to make sure the burner was at the right temperature and that the water was ready for the bowl of ingredients to be placed over it.
"Any tips for a first time older sibling for when they get older? Sorta been flying blind," she confessed. Much like for this entire baking class, she was flying blind. Blind like a ... blind thing. Silverah pshpshpsh. You're fine. I'm just going at whatever pace I am given. I don't mind at all!
