Galan had his portable painting kit under one arm, (only his acrylics today) with a collection of brushes, a palette and a few bits of board to paint on. He was heading to one of the art rooms while the class wasn't in session so that he could meet up with one of his Little Siblings. This one was named Coco, and he'd been told only that she was also a painting enthusiast. He wasn't sure what to expect, but wore clothes that were already quite spattered, just in case it turned out to be a finger-painting session.

He set his things down on one of the desks and set to pulling a few supplies from the supplies shelves. First a bit of drop cloth to make cleaning up easier, and then filled some jars with water so that everything would be ready when his painting partner arrived.

Lastly he moved to the windows to throw open the shutters to let in as much natural light as possible, forgetting for the umpteenth time that the murky light streaming in was a bright as it got down here. Squinting around the room be began looking for alternate lighting sources.

Coco walked into the art room, she moved slowly. Still very nervous about meeting up to paint with an older student, she wasn't sure what their race was, not that Coco would be bothered to meet a daydream though she hadn't met one yet. Coco saw Galan setting up, she stood there quietly watching the goblin. Her eyes grew wide, watching everything Galan did, in hopes she could learn to work as they did. She took her own paints and went to an easel and started to try to do what Galan was doing too. Trying to get everything ready, Coco loved art so much and she wanted to know everything she could about painting.

His painting partner entered so quietly that to Galan she had simply appeared when he turned around. He lit up with a bright smile, stepping forward gently. "You must be Coco," he offered in his soft tone of voice. "I'm Galan. I'll be your painting partner today. And, I suppose, if you enjoy it, we can paint together again."

He moved over to adjust her easel and stool for her height and stepped back to give the quiet one room. He didn't want to frighten her away, after all!

"What kinds of things do you like to paint?"

Coco smiled softly looking up at Galan "Yes I'm Coco" she liked Galan's soft spoken voice, it comforted her and made her feel safe. Coco smiled more brightly "I would like to paint again with you very much, I want to be a painter when I grow up." she said proudly "So I need to learn more about painting." she said with a nod. "I like painting flowers, clouds, grass, trees, animals, plushies.. What do you like to paint Galan??" Coco asked in her normal soft voice. She was excited about painting with a big kid.

Galan smiled warmly as she listed her subject interests. "Sounds like you have an eye for beauty," he opined encouragingly. "That's good. If you want to be a painter, you'll need to paint a great deal so you can practise." He settled on his stool beside her.

"Me? I like to paint portraits most of all, but I often do studies of other things too, like flowers and clouds." Looks around and notes a few objects by the window. "Shall we try a still life today?"

Coco smiled softly at Galan happy to have a big kid compliment her "Thank you very much, Galan, I hope you can teach me to do more stuff like you can sometime." Coco had never done a painting of a person before "I'd like to learn to do that, but yes please let's do a still life today. How about a potted flower, or a bowl of fruit??" Coco asked curiously as she looked up at Galan for his approval. She also thought about Milo sad she hadn't seen him lately, she wondered if he still liked her, maybe he had gotten tired of her or forgotten about her. Coco's face fell as doubts filled her mind.

Galan arranged a few items on a tall table between their two easels. He had selected a water jar with a few brushes soaking in it, a cleaning rag, a palette with the previous painter's dried colours on it in artful blobs, a selection of pencils nested in their own shavings and paperweight with a butterfly sealed within its resin. "Alright Coco," Galan chirped cheerfully when all was done. He was standing back to have a look at his handiwork. "The items are carefully arranged so that every angle boasts different shapes and shadows. You can choose to copy what you see exactly as it is, if you want. Or, you can focus on the item or items that most capture your interest. If you find a different angle that better suits you, let me know and I'd be happy to help you move your easel."

Galan wandered around the still life, looking for his angle. Before long, he found it. There was an angle where the light from outside filtered in through the glass, setting the paint-tinted water to gloaming, like a jar full of fire, with a spark of it reflected through the paperweight. He shifted his own easel slightly and settled in to begin selecting his paints.

Coco smiled and focused in on the pretty butterfly seal trying to capture it as best she could. Listening to Galan's instructions, trying to capture the shapes and shadows on her canvas making the other objects less defined so the butterfly would stand out. Coco moved her easel so she could try to get some of the same effects Galan was getting, but she muddied the colors a little in her attempt. Coco started to cry "Oh know.." then she hid her face blushing not wanting to look like a big baby in front of Galan.

Galan was absorbed in his painting, working through laying on long watered-down brush strokes. As he worked to build up the shadows and shapes, his angles began to resolve into a stylized impression of the still life, watery and soft. As he began adding in some bright spots for the reflected light, he noticed from the corner of his eye that Coco had stopped painting, her face buried in her sleeves. Thinking she must have finished already, Galan set down his brush and slid off his stool to have a look.

"How is yours going, Coco?" he asked kindly, wiping his hands on his apron.

Coco frowned wiping her eyes as she showed Galan her painting, with it's muddied colors, the shapes were pretty good, but Coco wasn't a master painter just yet, but she was still a kid and Coco was likely being far to hard on herself. Coco looked up at Galan hoping he wouldn't be to disappointed in her, she really wanted his approval. "I messed up the colors." she said sadly "I was trying to get the same effect you were with the shades and light, but I guess I need more practice." She said softly. Looking up to see Galan's reaction to her sad messy work. At least, that's what she thought of her art at this point. With Milo it was different, he was her age so it was ok, but Coco wanted to show Galan she was a big girl.

(Ready to wrap this up?? Or want to keep going?)

Galan blinked, surprised at how hard she was being on herself after her first attempt. He turned his attention to the canvas to observe the issue who voiced. He saw the streaks in the paint where the colours had muddied and run.

"Well, now. This is an easy thing to prevent, Coco," Galan murmured gently. "If you use a little less water, so the paint stays a big thicker, it shouldn't run like this. Then it's just a matter of allowing it to dry." He offered a kindly smile. "While you're waiting, you can choose to work on a different part of the canvas, or you can take the moment to rest and reflect." He turned back to her to see if she was cheered at all.

"As an artist, it's all about practise. As tired as the adage is, practise is the key to improvement. So, don't give up, alright?"

Coco smiled softly seeing that Galan wasn't upset or disappointed in her, then she looked at how much water she had been using realizing he was right and she had a lot of water on her brush. "Oh, I didn't know that was what the problem was. Thank you, Galan." Then she turned back to her canvas to try to continue working on a different area of canvas as Galan had advised, to allow the mistake to dry, then maybe she could try to fix it later. Coco smiled "I won't give up, I want to be an artist really badly." She smiled brighter "Practice, practice." She said cheerfully and then went back to her work. "Have you ever worked with any other mediums??" Coco asked she loved painting, but Coco wanted to explore working with pastels, oil paint, clay, stone, charcoals, and many other things. "I want to explore what all art has to offer, I don't want to miss out on my true calling if there is something that speaks to me more than painting." Coco said softly

"That's the spirit!" Galan enthused, watching as she carefully cleaned her brush and kept on working. "The nice thing about painting is you can always keep adding to it, so no mistake is forever," Galan added, moving back to his canvas so see how his initial washes were drying.

"I sincerely hope you see your dream come true, Coco. The world could always use more artists!" Galan began deepening some of his shadows, so that his reflected light would pop more strongly, some of his hues having become more muted as the paint dried. "I have played around with different mediums a little. Some of them, like clay, I haven't had the facilities for back in Above. But the Academy has a kiln and supplies, so I'd like to try it too." He paused, pondering the others she'd suggested. "Pastels and charcoal I use quite often... I've recently started playing with inks as well. I find that each medium requires different skills and techniques. So, while it can be a challenge to switch gears and sort of...'unlearn' habits from other mediums, sometimes you can figure things out that you can then apply to drawing or painting. The more tools in your art kit, the more freedom you have to create your visions." He offered a warm smile, leaning out from behind his canvas.

Coco smiled a little more brightly, she really liked Galan and thought he would make an amazing art teach some day if he wanted to. Then she waited for her canvas to dry more in the one area before working on fixing the colors, using less water this time, so she could make the colors clean and clear. Coco smiled happily as she worked.

Coco nodded and said to Galan "Me too, I don't want to be anything else that I can think of.." she mused trying to think of what else there could be for her and she just blanked she didn't want to be a dance, doctor, she didn't like math or science. Coco blinked and it had just occurred to her that Galan was a daydream not a nightmare. Little Coco hadn't even thought about Galan being different from her till he mentioned the Above. "What is it like in the Above??" Coco asked curiously. Coco smiled determined to follower Galan's advice and learn more mediums so she didn't get stuck in an art rut and have people bored with her art after a few decades. "Some day I want to make something amazing, maybe I can do that with lots of different mediums working together.. I hope everyone in the above and below can do that someday.." She said softly..

"Above?" Galan repeated softly, thinking of how to describe it. He thought of his Goblin den and the community that had raised him. He thought of the Goblin Market and how many went missing on its streets. He thought of the Elves, constantly pushing into town, all high and mighty, and he (as he had been taught) keeping his head down, not making eye contact. And how hard that had been, not looking, when as an artist looking was his life's spirit.

And how, above all, Goblins weren't to talk to outsiders of their ways, their lives, their customs. It was so easy to stick to those teachings, those old habits.

"It's much brighter in Above," he answered at last. The old Goblin habit of answering by not answering.

He finished up a brush stroke and then came around to watch her work a little, hoping he wouldn't intimidate her by watching. "That's it! Now you've got it!" he cheered.
