Celieda the hybrid enchantress, Isitar her khehorian mate, and their mixed blood twins, Cera and Rena were away from Tukyere, visiting Isitar's home clan in the pristine wilds of the Expanse, and Raemos was happy to leave them to it. Technically, Raemos was off duty. And on vacation himself.
However, with Celieda not in the city, someone had to finish her enchantments and take new customers. So, Raemos spent his vacation in her enchantment shop, enchanting... working. His colleagues called him insane. Raemos accepted that.
He was not exactly her quality, of course – Celi was a master craftswoman – but he could repair her spells and was very good at binding magic to weapons. It trained his skills nicely and gave him ample opportunity to enjoy the wonders of other forms of magic. It kept him busy, it trained his skills, and it was a break from work – just the kind of vacation he wanted.
Currently, he was working on a shield, enjoying the challenge of bending fire magic around the metal without disrupting it's structure. He eased the magic into place, smoothing out the kinks in the spell runes and, finally, activating it. The runes glowed flame-red against the orange metal, and Raemos, after checking it's function, smiled, pleased at his work...
“Hey. a*****e.” Raemose looked up at the words, his eyebrows raising as he adjusted his tinkering lenses. That was quite a way to greet someone, and as the larger world came into focus, he could see why it had been used.
“Ah.” he said, taking in the short Dovaa girl with her crystalline horns. “The ever insolent Zamanavyi.” he covered his work carefully and stood, peering over the counter at her.
“The name's Red, you jackass.” she snarled, her face twisting into a snarl. It made her face – which was otherwise not unattractive – quite ugly.
What an animal he thought, deciding to ignore her crudeness, Or a child “Can I help you?” he asked, a reasonable question. He was minding a store, after all.
“I dunno.” she said, glaring at him, “You still sleeping with my brother?”
Raemos crinkled his nose in distaste. How crass of her - he expected no less, but somehow he had hoped that, since it involved her brother, she would show a little bit of decorum. Clearly, however, decorum was as far from her vocabulary as restraint and manners. “Corporal Vetertov” he said coolly, ”has been transferred out of my unit. If you were looking for him, I would try along the North Coast and the Lowlands.” he said cooly. If that was why she was here, perhaps she would leave him to his peaceful enchanting work. He did not want to be any more involved in their family dynamics, on or off duty.
“Oh.” she said, watching him quietly. Raemos stared right back. They stared at each other in awkward silence, every passing moment making it less likely that she was here strictly for her brother. She, very likely was not going to leave until... “So... I heard I can get really good enchantments here. The best.”
She was here to shop. Ah well, it was worth a try. Raemos thought, nodding. “This is an enchantment vendor, yes.” he said.
Red narrowed her eyes. “I want the best. Do I got to deal with you to get it?”
Raemos held back a sigh. “You do not 'got' to deal with me.” he said, emphasizing her wording as he leaning back in his chair, watching her idly. His tail tapped gently against the floor of the store, sending the multicolored dust that inevitably accumulated there flying into the air. “However, if you wish for the enchantress that normally crafts here to create your enchantments, you will have a long wait. She is on vacation with her family, the Expanse I believe. So, a few weeks at least.” He anticipated her groan of misery and smirked, slightly. “However, if you don't want to wait, I am here now.”
“So, you can do this?” She sounded incredulous. Raemos couldn't blame her, he supposed.
“Yes.”
“All right.” Red said, leaning on the counter, “This is what I want.” Somehow, he knew that would be her reply. She took two roughly-hewn stone throwing axes from her belt and set them on the counter. Despite clearly being handmade by barbarians, Raemos noted their very close symmetry and signs of use. “I want you to make them all... lightning-y. I like lightning.”
“Hmm.” Raemos looked them over, not questioning even for a moment why an Aiskala Dovaa would like Kiandri magic. He himself was not one to talk about magical preferences – he liked light magic over his own native dark magic, and dabbled in all the other elements besides. It was good to have a varied arsenal of magic at your command. “So you wish me to enchant them – both of them?”
“Yeah. With lightning.”
“With lightning enchantments.”
“Didn't I just say that?!” she snapped at him, glaring at him yet again with her ice-white eyes.
“Yes. You did.” he looked over the axes one more time, thinking about what materials he had in stock. He was intrigued, despite his disdain for the girl – he'd never done a lightning enchantment on his own before. It would be a new experience, and it would be fun. “Very well.” He moved the axes to the side and knit his fingers together. “Now, about price. Part of it is paid for in advance, materials and such. The other part is paid at pick up. Generally, anyway. You are welcome to pay in advance.” he recited. This was the same litany he had spoken to Celi's customers a hundred times. Red, though she was personally annoying, was a customer just like the rest. “For you, I will charge...”
He was midway through the sentence when the dovaa wildtribeswoman slapped a cluster of neatly tied clumps of fur, a few beast horns, and a bag of money onto the counter. “Is this enough? For both of 'em?”
Raemos counted through the coins briefly and added up the values in his head. He separated out a few coins and handed them back to her – fair, as always. “Yes.” he said. He asked her to give him five days or so before she returned to pick up her order, and he could tell that she didn't like the idea of waiting, but five days was better than weeks, and it was enough to get her to storm out of the store in a huff, leaving him to sketch out enchantment plans in peace. With few commissions in the way, he was able to start on hers fairly soon, assembling the ingredients – including the fur tufts she had paid with – and designing the runes. Soon, he was ready to begin...
