He almost felt like he had been hibernating. It wasn’t that he had been down in the dumps, he just…was feeling quite detached. There was a disconnect recently and he wasn’t sure what was causing it. He had met his Princess…and even been invited to her wedding…but he hadn’t gone.
To be honest, he hadn’t done much of anything…and when he last did venture out, it had been a strange affair with a cat and a senshi who got to upgrade. Well good for her.
Whisler was making his way back towards the middle of the city, wondering what had caused him to come out tonight of all nights. It was cold, and it was snowing, and right now, he was ever so thankful for his cape and warm outfit. He was looking for something. Anything that might ease him out of this rut.
His mind wandered to Soyala, that adorable and beautiful cat he had met before, and he absently wondered how she was doing…and almost as thought it was the answer to all of his prayers, he felt a slight tingle of a chaos aura. Almost as though it was coming from a cat.
The knight swallowed, thinking for a moment before heading towards the aura, hoping that it was indeed the lovely feline he had met months before…and to his delight, it was.
“Soyala!” His voice held more joy than he had had in quite some time.

Knights weren't technically Soyala's primary domain, but she'd gotten on so well with Whisler that she was startng to hope, every time she felt one of their auras, that it was him.
This time, it actually was. She let out a loud, unrestrained purr of delight, and bounded over, launching herself at him with utmost certainty that he would catch her.
"Oh, Whisler, my darling, it's so lovely to see you again! How are you?" She was still purring happily, whole body vibrating under her thick, fluffy coat.

In an instant the Knight’s arms were full of beautiful, fluffy cat and he nuzzled against her in delight. “I’ve been all right. I’ve missed you though, How have you been? Are you staying warm enough this winter?”
Whisler held the cat close, one hand stroking her silky fur, already glancing around to see if there was someplace he could sit down to have a nice long talk with his favorite cat. After a moment of looking, he found a bench and set off for it, taking a seat on the cold wooden surface. “I mean. Maybe I haven’t been so great. I’ve been kind of…in a rut, I suppose. I don’t really know how to describe it but…”
He fell quiet and closed his eyes, leaning against the back of the bench. “…I finally met Polaris, I know you wanted to know. So…I met her.”

Soyala purred her contentment, settling happily in Whisler's arms.
"I've been just fine, darling. Plenty of fur to keep me warm, no real trouble." She nuzzled her face into his chest, blatantly content. She loved being in the comfortable arms of someone who appreciated her, even if it was someone on the other side.
She made a sad mewling noise when he described being in a rut, and nudged her face against him. "Do you know why that is, darling?" She asked, shifting a little so she could look directly up at him. "And...what is your Princess like?"

“Well that’s good at the very least. I would hate to think that you might be cold and shivering out there.” The knight continued to stroke the cat, enjoying her warmth and the weight of her upon his legs. Well. He had opened his mouth, so he might as well finish his thoughts and answer her questions. “Well, no, I don’t know why I’m in a rut, but I’m hoping to break out of it sooner rather than later…so, that’s good at least. As for my princes…she was…”
Whisler paused, thinking over his next words. “Well…she’s okay. She seemed nice I suppose. I really…I don’t know. She was so friendly and warm, and I suppose I should have felt warm towards her but…I didn’t really feel much of anything…do you think that’s a bad thing?”
It had to be some sort of sign. She was his princess…that should have been a big deal…but instead, he just felt…very meh towards her. Even though meh wasn’t a real emotion…it was what he felt.
Meh.

Soyala tilted her head to the side. "It could mean a lot of things, sweetling," she said, "not all of them all that terrible." She wriggled just a little to settle more comfortably, considering what this might mean for Whisler, and for her eternal project to bring him back home.
"It could mean you aren't meant to be where you are, or it could just mean that you'll never fawn over your liege." She rolled her shoulders, a catty approximation of a shrug. "I adore our General-Queens, but not everyone can be so lucky. If you are otherwise happy as a Knight, not being head over heels for your Princes may not mean anything at all."
Not necessarily good advice - but Soyala had a feeling he was not, in fact, otherwise happy as a Knight. Not now, at least.

“Well, maybe I’m just not really a fawner then.” He ran his hand down the cats back and sighed once again. “Oh well. It’s just another thing to deal with, and quite frankly…I don’t think I’m ready to deal with it all the way so perhaps I’ll just let it go as a mistake and move on with my life, eh, Soya?” Whisler forced a grin onto his face and looked at the cat.
“See, if you were my princess, I’m quite sure I could fawn over you, but…in all honestly, are you warm enough? Why are you out and about? It’s so cold right now, I don’t want you to freeze to death Soya. You have a nice place to stay right? Enough food? Someone to snuggle you at night?”
It was so much easier to push all the questions onto her…he knew he couldn’t do anything to help her…but he wanted to at least know she was safe. That was important.

Soyala nodded agreeably. "You fawn over me plenty well as it stands, darling," she laughed. Then, she nosed at his arm briefly, a gesture of reassurance.
"I promise, dearest, I'm just fine. I have a nice place to stay, food, everything a girl could want. But I still have a job to do!" She said. "Senshi don't stop popping up just because it's a little chilly, darling, and I have to find as many as I can."

“Where were you when I was in the Negaverse Soyala? Maybe if I had you I wouldn’t have left it.” The words came from his mouth without his permission, but once they were spoken he couldn’t very well just take them back.
Whisler sighed. “Maybe you should stop in the winter though. I know those senshi outfits leave little to the imagination sometimes…maybe you’d be better off finding them in the summer so they stay warmer, yeah?” It was a terribly feeble attempt to get the subject off of him again, but he figured he had already failed.
…but maybe it was true, what he said. Maybe he would have stayed if he had someone like this cat with him. Someone who complimented him and who he could compliment. Someone who saw the best in him and wanted him to see it too.

"Oh, sweet thing," Soyala sighed. "I must not have been Awakened yet. I'm certain I would have remembered an agent as handsome as you, and it is such a tragedy that the Negaverse lost you." It really was, by her estimation. Whisler was clever, charming - traits that were necessary to a good officer.
She did let out a tiny laugh at his suggestion. "Perhaps! My poor charges do often have terribly cold-looking outfits, nothing like yours. You must be so wonderfully comfortable in all those lovely layers," she purred cheerily.
