 Tamandani had just finished sharing her favorite Solstice story with the freshlings at the orphanage. She so loved seeing the looks of wonder on the little faces, and not for the first time longed to adopt. Her home often seemed empty lately despite the familiars she had acquired lately. Pets only did so much to alleviate her loneliness. It was one reason she spent so much of her free time at the orphanage. At the beginning of the month, she had left a letter with the administration hoping to be approved to adopt. She had thought about imbuing a stone, but she would prefer to do that with someone she cared about. Besides, adopting a freshling already without a family seemed a much better idea when she was alone, herself.

 Crux and her best friend Maylis had both been very interested in the story the red haired Nightmare had shared with them. So much so, that when she had finished telling it, the first place they went was to the craft room so that Crux could construct her own spider ornament for the Solstice tree in the main room. "MayMay, what'd you think of that lady?" she asked her friend. The golden eyed hybrid had rather liked her, and while usually she could care less about the ones who came in looking to adopt this one had caught her eye. Perhaps it was because they were both geist hybrids? Maybe... Either way, she had really liked that story. And even if the lady was interested in adopting her, Crux wasn't going anywhere without Maylis.

 Maylis had quite enjoyed the tale about the spiders and the tinsel. Tinsel had always been one of her favorite decoration, and the whimsical story just gave her a whole new reason to love it. When the story was finished, she followed her best friend into the craft room. Crux wanted to make a spider for the tree, and Maylis was thinking about playing with glitter to create her own inspired ornament. She almost missed the question Crux put to her. "Hm? Oh, I think she seems kind of nice," she murmured in answer. Crux was the only one she didn't stutter around, which was why Crux was very nearly the only one she spoke to. "Why do you ask?"

Dani watched as the little ones wandered off to different rooms after her story was over. Several of them went to find a snack, and some went to the game room to play. A pair of them had headed into the craft room and she wondered if they were going to make spiders for the orphanage's tree. That had been the first thing she'd done as a freshling when she'd heard the story for the first time. She smiled at the memory as she leaned against the doorway to the craft room. Her spider had been black with far too much glitter on it, but she still had it and it still went on her personal tree every year.

Crux had pulled nearly all the pipe cleaners out of the bag looking for enough black ones to make her spider and now the rainbow fuzzies were spread all over her half of the table. For the body, she used a styrofoam ball painted black. Some of the paint had ended up on her face and hands, but her ball was black and that was what counted. While she worked, she watched Maylis as her friend worked on her own project. She wondered... "Do you...do you think she'd want to adopt us?" she asked quietly, which was a rarity for her.

Compared to her friend's side of the table, Maylis's half was neat as a pin. She had only pulled out what she needed, and put away what she used when she was done with it. She had a piece of white construction paper out and had drawn a tree on it. There were some ornaments drawn on as well, but her plan was to spread some glue in lines across it and pour glitter on to make it look like sparkly tinsel. At the top was a little spider for a topper. At Crux's question, Maylis blinked and looked up. That was...not like her. Crux didn't usually care about the adults that came around which was fine with her since it meant she wouldn't be left here alone. She almost worried about Crux leaving her until she realized her friend had said 'us' and not 'me.' "I...I don't know...maybe... She comes around a lot," she pointed out. A flash of red and gold caught her eye and she nodded toward the doorway. "You could ask her."

Just as the Divination professor was about to see what the girls were making, she felt a light touch on her shoulder. "Yes?" she asked as she turned, smiling when she saw the administrator. Her letter and application had been reviewed; and she was now approved to adopt! The news made her smile brightly as she thanked the administrator. It was then she realized that she hadn't really made a connection to any of the freshlings in particular. She enjoyed spending time with all of them, so how now could she choose which one to make part of her life?

Crux looked pensive as she thought about what Maylis said. Maybe she should ask. "Right! I'm gonna ask her," announced the bold, blue freshling before she hopped down from her chair. She had gotten about halfway across the room when her target was distracted. Curiousity got the better of her and she paused by the doorway in the guise of looking through the crayon box. Crux tossed crayons around in the box idly as she listened to the conversation between the adults. She knew eavesdropping was considered rude, but she wanted to know! She gasped softly when she heard the adult was looking to adopt, and had in fact just become approved. "Maylis!" she hissed excitedly as she ran back to the table. "Come on! She wants to adopt!"

Maylis watched as her friend eavesdropped. Crux was so much bolder than Maylis was. The young imp disliked being the center of attention, and disliked speaking in front of others even more. When Crux came back all excited, Maylis felt her heart race. The pretty Nightmare wanted to adopt? She bit her lower lip as her doubts immediately assailed her mind. What if she only wanted to adopt one freshling? Or maybe she wanted a boy? Or maybe she did want two, but a boy and a girl? How would they be so lucky to both be adopted by the same Nightmare? "Crux, are you sure about this? I-" she squealed as Crux grabbed her and nearly yanked her out of her chair. She had no time to prepare herself when Crux tugged on the woman's skirt, so she half hid behind her friend as she looked up with large violet eyes.

Tamandani was just about to see what the girls were up to now when she felt someone tugging on her skirts. She was not surprised to see the little hybrid freshling looking up at her quite boldly with her friend mostly hiding behind her. Gathering her skirts in one hand, she crouched down so she was more on their level before asking, "How can I help you, girls?"
She was pretty sure that the younger Geist hybrid had been eavesdropping on her conversation before, but she wanted to hear it from the girl herself. She waited for the answer patiently.

Crux eyed the older Nightmare almost suspiciously. Not very many adult Nightmares would bend down like this one did. Crux kind of liked that as it didn't make her neck hurt to talk to this lady. "You want to adopt?" she asked with no preamble. She could feel her best friend flinch behind her. Maylis kept telling her she shouldn't be so blunt but Crux couldn't help it. She didn't have the patience to dance around what she wanted to know. She just wanted to just straight to the point. So far it had worked pretty well for her so she didn't see a reason to change.

Maylis would not say that she cowered behind Crux as her friend pulled her along to speak to the pretty Nightmare. She wouldn't say it, but that's pretty much what she was doing. She held Crux's hand tightly in both of her own. She did want to know if the lady was looking to adopt, but she would never have been able to bring herself to ask outright like Crux could.
And did. Maylis couldn't stop the flinch. Not all adults appreciated nosy freshlings in their business. If this lady didn't then her friend might have blown their chance at being adopted. Not that luck was with them to be adopted together, anyway.

But Tamandani only smiled. "Well, yes I would like to adopt," she answered. She liked these two girls. They were obviously friends, and she had seen the hybrid protect the Imp from some of the older kids that liked to push the younger ones around. She had only intended to adopt one freshling but it was clear that these two would not benefit from being separated. Was she ready for double the responsibility she had been expecting?
Her eyes sparkled a little as she asked a question of the bold little girl. "Do you have any suggestions?" She was pretty sure what her answer would be.

Crux squeezed Maylis' hands comfortingly. She just knew she would be able to get this Nightmare to adopt them. Both of them. They were getting out of here, and they would do it together. "I sure do!" she said with a bright smile. "You should adopt us! Me and Maylis. We always like it when you come to visit and we really liked that story you told earlier. I was even coming in here to make a spider ornament to put on the tree. Maylis was too, right MayMay?" she said, moving to let Maylis stand out a little more. She knew that Maylis didn't like the spotlight but this was their chance.

Maylis was completely content to let Crux talk and convince this woman that they were the right freshlings for her. But then Crux moved and put the purple Imp in the middle. She squeaked and tried to move behind Crux again, but her friend stopped her with a look. It was an encouraging look and Maylis looked up at the Nightmare and nodded. "U-um.... y-yes...we were... g-going to make s-spider ornaments. U-um... b-because of your story. We r-really liked it," she somehow managed to get squeaked out before Crux would let her hide behind her again. Out of the spotlight, the shy Imp felt like she could breathe normally again.
