Jaden shuffled through the lunch line, eager to get some food into his protesting stomach. He never had much of an appetite in the morning, so as much as he enjoyed his classes he found that lunch was one of his most anticipated times of the day!

He accepted his tray with a blush, ducking his head and uttering a shy, "Thank you," in his soft voice. The serving person must have heard him though, cause Jaden saw him smile when he peeked up under his bangs at them. He quickly carried his food off to the little table that was set aside for students who wanted to add a bit extra to their food.

Jaden liked the food here, but it was always a little boring to him. He had tried combining the foods in a multitude of ways to see if it brought out any more flavor. Then one day he'd noticed all the bigger students going to the magical table of flavors, and he'd tried it out for himself. He wasn't sure if there was real magic going on, but the way you could make totally new tastes with just a couple ingredients seemed like magic to him.

There weren't many freshlings who went to the flavor table, so it was a little high up. Jaden carefully set his tray on the edge of the table, then stood on tiptoe to spy his favorite bottles. He'd learned after a bit of testing that anything red was pretty tasty, but the stuff with the picture of peppers was the best!

Jaden will probably also have slightly dampened taste due to his Litch genes, but he doesn't realize it yet.

Arinas had always loved cooking. It was something special that he did with his dad for as long as he could remember. Of course considering how young Arinas was this wasn’t exactly a feat, but it was still a special memory. You see Alrai would come home from school and even if he was dead tired he would always cook dinner. Arinas would always run into help. However he had to admit his true passion lied in making sweet things. Still he had noticed that he tasted things differently than other people. They would explain something was too sweet or too salty yet Arinas could barely taste it. Alrai had been a bit worried at first, considering his dad was a mutant and there had been cases that some mutants could pass on their mutated genes. However it wasn’t uncommon for one of the senses to be severely muted when it came to having litch Dna.

So it was quite understandable that Arinas loved to run over to the condiments table and make his meal stand out a bit. One had to be rather heavy on the flavor for him to actually taste it. Unfortunately most freshlings didn’t seem to like said condiment table and so t was up rather high. Arinas often had to jump and then flap his wings a bit so that he would hover for a few seconds and hope it was long enough to grab something to try.

Luckily most of the time the seniors took pity on him and after telling them what he wanted, they would grab it today. However today there didn’t seem to be any helpful seniors and he was stuck half way on the table, half falling out trying to reach for the mayonnaise. Oh he hoped he grew up and was giant.

Jaden had spotted a few of his favorite bottles, but the problem was they were pretty far back. He was wondering how he might reach them. The tables had benches, not chairs, so there was nothing for him to drag over. Even if he jumped and tried to hover he'd be hard to reach, and he would probably knock things over in the process. As it stood though, he'd only started learning how to fly and doubted he could do more than cause a lot of noise and wind.

He could always try to find an adult to ask for help, or go to one of the seated seniors, but the very thought had him curling in on himself. He was just about to resign himself to bland food (maybe he could combine the ingredients in an interesting way somehow) when another freshling came over. Jaden paused, wondering if they had some trick he didn't know. The freshling paused, staring at the table, then they hopped, flapped their wings a bit, and managed to somehow flop partially onto the table itself.

Jaden instinctively rushed over to help steady the freshling as they started to slip so that they wouldn't fall into the floor. "You okay," he asked concernedly, not sure how long his tiny arms could support even a portion of the other freshling's weight.

Arinas almost had the mayonnaise bottle, and his claws brushed it a couple times. He could probably spear it with his claw but then that would ruin the bottle for everyone else and probably would get him in trouble He wiggled just a bit further and… ahaha victory. The bottle was his, and that’s when he started slipping back. However suddenly his descent was stopped? Arinas looked over to see another freshling that was a lot like him trying to hold him up.

Arinas needed to stop spacing out and being happy at another multi-racial hybrid. It wasn’t like they weren’t used to them. After all his dad was a hybrid and his little brother was a hybrid. Oh they were asking him a question. Well Arinas should answer him right and get down quickly. Arinas knew he had to be heavy.

“Ah yeah for the most part, tummy hurts a bit. I ah, didn’t plan that out as much as I could… While I’m up here there any bottles you want me to grab for you.” Arinas replied. It was only fair since the freshling was helping him after all and he did have access to the bottles. True they could have ran over when Arinas had first jumped and was just helping but he was pretty sure he had seen him out of the corner of his eye when Arinas had first come to the table.

Jaden didn't doubt the other freshling's tummy did hurt. He was pretty sure landing on a edge with your tummy would hurt anyone, but they both had wings, which meant that was just that much more weight pressing you into whatever you landed on.

He blinked at the other's offer, and blushed a little at having to ask for anything. Even if the other freshling had been the one to offer. Still, he was no closer to getting any of those bottles on his own...

"Anything red," he answered. "Especially if it has a picture of a pepper on it, but anything red will do." He didn't particularly care about the specifics at this point, and would be glad for any added flavor!

Seeing as Arinas was not going to be up for much longer he grabbed at least two bottles with peppers pictured on them and a red bottle before falling down to the floor. He could have probably tried to grab a couple more but even he was starting to feel the strain that Jaden must have been going through to hold him up. He maneuvered all of the bottles carefully to be held with one arm and used his now free hand to rub his tummy. Maybe he could go and protest to the school that they needed a step stool or a lower table.

“It really doesn’t make sense for them to have such a high table… maybe they should have two. One for the really tall races and others for the really short races and us” Arinas muttered although it was loud enough that Jaden could probably hear him. When he realized that he shyly looked down at the floor before holding out the bottles he grabbed.

“Here, I hope I grabbed good choices.”
He looked like he wanted to say something else since spices and flavors weren’t often a bit hit with freshlings so it was different to see another freshling at the table. However maybe Jaden was like Arinas where his litch traits manifested not only in his eyes, although Arinas would like to say this was more his geist side, but through his sense of taste. Arinas himself was really self-conscious and he didn’t even know the hybrid’s name.

“And ah thank you for helping me when I started to slip off. I’m Arinas by the way”

Jaden winced in sympathy for the other freshling, and was totally in agreement with his muttered sentiment. From his people-watching he knew that Imps and Geists could be super short; some of them he knew were seniors, yet they only had a little over a foot of height on him. He was sure they had trouble reaching for things on occasion, and they'd probably like a stool or shorter table as well.

He accepted the bottle from the freshling with an equal amount of shyness and looked them over. One appeared to be ketchup, that that was fine; he enjoyed sweeter flavors as well. One of the bottles was a spicy sauce that he was fond of, and he was quite pleased to see it. The third bottle was one he'd never tried before, and he was curious to see if it was also good.

"Thanks," he said softly. "These will work great. The food is good, but I always feel like this stuff makes it better." He ducked his head and fidgeted a little, not at all used to making conversation. He supposed once you helped someone from slipping off a table and then acted as a living booster though, it made you an odd sort of comrades.

"My name's Jaden. I'm glad I was able to help." Jaden paused, hesitating, then plunged forward before he lost his nerve. "Do you want to share? I don't mind, and you worked hard to get these down in the first place."

Arinas always struggled with a balance of polite and manners. He was a bit shy and two of his genetics were known for always being rather collected and polite but geists could be not so polite at times and sometimes snarky little comments escaped him. Still it looked as if his statement was somewhat shared if the wince was any indication.

“No problem. It’s always nice to see someone younger that likes experimenting with their food” Arinas smiled, his eyes sparkling before falling back into more muted polite tones. He absent mindedly shifted his weight around. There was a slight shy awkwardness between them; one Arinas was quite familiar with. He normally wasn’t this out front but he did kind of want to see why the freshling was here for the different sauces.

Sharing would be lovely. I’m part litch and while some hybrids don’t really get affected with these many mixed in races I ended up with a kind of dead tongue” Arinas admitted shuffling again. “So I agree that it’s really nice to experiment with. There are just soo many ways to…. To bring out flavor.”

Jaden considered that as they both found a table and sat down, arranging their hard-won condiments so both freshlings could easily reach them.

"I'd never considered that before. I'm part Litch too," Jaden admitted. "Maybe that affects my taste buds as well. I like foods with really strong flavors. Most of the foods everyone else seems to like don't taste like much to me, or they don't like the things I do." For example, you could make candy or drinks that were too sweet for most. Most people loved sweet, but there were some things Jaden could eat that caused others to make strange faces and push away. And he didn't really know anyone who liked spicy the way he did, but he hadn't expected that one to be popular anyway.

“Well I heard that all litches have some sort of dampening or rot but it’s sometimes different for Hybrids. Dad studies it a bit more so he could tell you more” Arinas mused tilting his head to the side. He then thought about the rest of Jaden's comments.

“I only noticed myself because…. Ah…"
It was here that Arinas trailed off. He had only noticed because people had been giving his dad a hard time for being a mutant, and they wondered if Arinas had inherited any from him so of course to a bunch of kids that was grounds to bully him especially when they found out he didn’t taste the same things as him. “Beside the point, but it could be. My dad isn’t a litch, my other dad was so I’m not too caught up about litch specifics. I can tell you all about fallen stuff though but that doesn’t really help with deadened taste buds. Oh I can talk about good ways to bring out the flavors when you’re baking however,” and he was rambling again… ah.

Jaden applied himself to spicing his food the way he liked it, and trying a few of the contents from the other jars as well. He didn't exactly dig it, since it would be rude to stuff his face when he was talking to someone, but he did take little nibbles so that he could be ready to respond when the cue came.

"Your dad sounds really nice," Jaden said with a touch of wistfulness. Someone who understood hybrid and fallen natures... Jaden would have doubted such a person existed, but Arinas had no reason to lie to him. It would be nice to talk to someone who could tell him anything about his nature, and any cultural hints he could pick up would be equally wonderful. Jaden couldn't swim, but he often wondered if this was what it felt like. Instead of trying to keep his head above the water, he was trying to figure out who he was when he was so many things at once.

"I've never tried baking before," Jaden admitted, feeling a little shy and wondering if that was a bad thing. "I usually eat candy when I want a sweet snack. All the baked sweets I've tried have come from the cafeteria."

“He is, he’s the best dad ever. Well at least for me. A lot of people think he’s a bit grumpy so they tend to steer away from him which is sad, although he has mutations so a lot of people avoid him for that” Arinas answered. Then again Alrai knew all about crappy family life. Luckily today hybrids were everywhere and people where very much more tolerant of them but Alrai’s parents had been old fashioned and on top of the mutations well it was suffice to say that Arinas really wasn’t looking forward to meeting his grandparents… ever. To Arinas his family was Araceae who was like his aunt, Alrai and his uncle Alioth. He was hoping one day to add his other dad and his younger brother.
“You haven’t tried baking….” Arinas sat there blinking that was almost unheard of for some one that liked flavors so much. How…well Jaden could be an orphan, he knew that not everyone had a family like Arinas… “Ah… well we just have to fix this. Ah no I mean… if you want… maybe one day we could...” he knew he was babbling but half way through his shyness caught back up with him. He had started out all confident but he hadn’t invited any one home yet. Arinas really didn’t have that many friends.

“Ah what I meant is if you wanted you could come over one day and I could show you what non cafeteria baking is like. Dad won’t mind, we have a really really big house.” Arinas finally finished twiddling his thumbs together. Well as best he could his claws got in the way a bit.

Jaden listened curiously as Arinas talked about his father. He did sound pretty interesting. Jaden had already met a couple different mutated freshlings; Muninn, who seemed about as outgoing as Jaden was, and Eriu, who had more than enough of an outgoing nature to compensate for several people. He'd never seen anything about their mutations as wrong. Different, sure, but wasn't he a little different in his own way?

Arinas' sudden offered surprised Jaden from his thoughts and caused a slight blush to form on his face. It was the first time anyone had actually invited him over to their house. "I'd really like that," Jaden said shyly, then applied himself to his food to cover up his own shy reaction.

"I'm not doing anything after classes today, or tomorrow, so would one of those days be okay," he asked diffidently.

This would be the first person that would come over to his house… well other than Florence and Fiore but they lived there so they hardly counted. Arinas was pretty sure he was the definition of nervous as he waited for the answer. Well it was their first meeting after all, would it be weird? Mmm come to think of it Arinas probably should have thought about that before he asked. Well Araceae had joined their household due to Alrai randomly offering so it was a sort of tradition… and Arinas was even babbling inside of his own head… great.

However Jaden answered and Arinas couldn’t help the small smile that broke out. While his offer had been one of the most awkward Arinas had ever given he was glad. He could teach Jaden all about cooking, well baking at least. He was really looking forward to it.

“Either day works for me. Hmm although maybe tomorrow? Dad won’t say no, but I should probably run it by him that company is coming over. “
Arinas pointed out very confident of Alrai’s answer. Alrai didn’t terribly mind company and he trusted Arinas not to bring over any one disruptive or crazy in a bad way. He also wanted Arinas to have friends. Arinas had to smile again. He was getting really excited. He couldn’t wait.
