Chronologically occurs on Thurs. Jan 7th, 2016

There'd been necessity of a raincheck, but at least they'd managed an honest reschedule without judgements or drama. Quenton had arranged with Elliot to pick up hours, and thankfully the other man had the time despite the start of new classes at DCU. In the meantime of waiting for 'Fritz' to appear, Quenton sat at one of the front cafe tables and worked on completing a couple of the Lord Ouija felted-cat fur keychains that were sold by the cafe to fans of the great, black beast. With how many pictures were uploaded to the Catfé website by regulars and Quenton himself, there was beginning to be quite a following, and it was challenging to keep enough in stock. Even using the Furminator, there was only so much Faust fluff to be harvested to create cute charms for devotees. As it was, he had enough felted fluff for a six different, stylized cat positions.

I wonder if he will look better or worse than last time.

In spite of the wreckage that was Fritz's life currently littering his feet, he could, at the very least, say that he was looking forward to one singular thing - and that singular thing happened to be the famous Catfé that Thraen had mentioned. A cafe with cats, the amalgamation of all of that Fritz adored - or at least, had once adored. Even if they were meant to go to the Surrounding - something he was not looking forward to - the prospect of going to the Catfé had fortified Fritz through several weeks now.

And as he neared it now, with feelings of mingled wariness and anticipation, Fritz saw that he was not to be disappointed. It was a pleasant, welcoming place, and he saw, to his relief, a tall man with blonde hair seated at one of the tables near the front.

It had to be Quenton. Fritz stepped inside, and although he'd showered and dressed only an hour before, he did not look his normal self. The dark circles that had ringed his eyes were still terribly present, hair damp against his neck, and he looked slightly thinner than normal, a little paler.

He stepped up to the table.

"Are you...Quenton?"

Where no recognition pierced glamour on just sighting a person, having a stranger know your name, when yo uhad a scheduled meeting, while they sported so dour an aspect allowed that certainty of logic: Once having eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. Quenton set the felting down on the little table, stood, and turned to extend a hand out to the man. "Fritz? Indeed so, 'Quenton,' preferably to any shortening. "

Blondie. Butterfly. Quincy.

It's a pleasure. Welcome to the Catfé. Did you want something to drink, and to sit down with the cats a moment, or to head out to get right to it? There's also when we get back, which might be after official hours. But you'd be welcome to private time with all the cats. "

"You look to want of something bracing. Gratis. We can accomodate most allergies and preferences. " He didn't pry, but the offer made lampshaded the notations of deterioration, exhaustion, and expressed at least casual acquaintance's concern and bolstering.

He had guessed, entirely on a whim - and, well, if it hadn't turned out to be Quenton, then Fritz was going to feel awfully silly, the expression on his face one of tense apprehension. But it changed a second later to one of relief as the man stood to confirm his identity, and Fritz took the offered hand and gave it a shake.

"Ah," said Fritz, glancing behind him at the cats, a look of mild longing on his face before saying, a little regretfully, "Afterwards might be best. Though this is a wonderful place, even from just first glance. I think I would enjoy coming back here for a proper visit after today."

He smiled tiredly at Quenton, something in his face flickering, betraying the mask he kept so carefully prepared before it dissipated again.

"I do so like cats, though. Especially black or orange ones."

"Just black or orange separately, or would together also fit the bill? Orange and Black as in Calico? Tortoiseshell? Torbie? " It took no time to scoop the small items he'd been working on into their plastic container and carry over to slide onto a low shelf behind the bar. The offer of a free drink had been passed over? Ignored? Not even heard? It was difficult to tell with how rabbity and unwell Fritz seemed to be in general.

It can be offered again when we get back if he does stay. Elliot offered the pair a lifted hand, assuming them to be heading out as implied. Quenton returned the gesture and held the door for Fritz. "If you turn right there's a gate into an alley. It's unlocked, and leads to the back delivery drive for this phalanx of storefronts. We can take that to left. There's an empty storefront at the end of the row with no locks and no cameras or surveillance we can duck into. It's still in zoning paperwork with the city and will eventually be renovated into Papyrus retail site. The University students and faculty are a ready clientele."

Quenton led the way even as he described it, so as to limit confusion. "We can uniform and transport out of site from inside. I'd like to hear if you have any tips on directing where one arrives on the Road. "

He couldn't help the little smile that broke out across his wearied face, in spite of his nervousness to visit the Surrounding. "Both," said Fritz, lifting a hand to run it through his head of red hair; it was getting too long. "Together works, I don't mind together. Calicos are lovely, but I think Tortoiseshells are rather wonderful too."

He had indeed missed the the offer of a drink, too caught upside of his own anxieties. Fritz gave a nod to the man behind the desk and stepped outside as Quenton offered, sucking in a sharp breath.

"So I take it you use this way often?" he asked, glancing around.

His fingers twitched at the hem of his shirt as Fritz considered the question.

"Well - you've said you've been there before, right? It's kind of like...a big circle. Each outpost of the senshi are located around each one, with the knight wonders sort of...scattered between them. Some are, I believe, harder to get to than others; the road was broken for a while, cutting off some of the outposts."

"No. I use no way often. Habit, regular paths and regular routes are a sure way to leave tracks. Like deer or rabbit paths in underbrush, a smart hunter sets snares on the path and waits. Our Hunters are cunning as we, and with greater weaponry in this Most Dangerous Game. I only make it a point to know my environment as much as I can- where the city's security cameras are, where are places that can be ducked into if injured."

Once they were both safely inside the building and the door was closed behind them, Quenton finally replied, "Have you found any ...murals, coinage, sculpture, even ceramics, carved wood...anything that has a visualization of the whole? Ancient people's tended to make graphic emblems and preserve them on daily use items or in public art out of significant historical events, zeitgeist elements, caste and religion. Like the Tudor roses cast into the demi-cannon of the Mary Rose, or ceiling panels at Hampton Court palace. "

Quenton retrieved his pen from his pocket and transformed, trying to ignore the glitter, questionable vines, and dance steps that powering up required. He almost never did it in company, so the process felt extra uncomfortable. Do knights have to deal with it? How DO knights transform?

Revealed as Thraen at last, he summoned his senshi phone to hand, "Or are the charm the only available representations of old?"

Celsus considered this for a moment or two, letting it sink into him. He had not ever considered not making a habit of things, but now that the other side was presented to him, he found it worrying that he had started patrolling in the same places each and every night.

"A good point," said Fritz quietly, and then turned his head to look sideways at Quenton, though he stepped a certain distance away to allow him at least some semblance of privacy while he powered up. He couldn't quite stop himself from glancing over curiously, however, though he tried to be respectful of it.

"Not at present," was his answer, Fritz giving a little shake of his head. "I think there might be a mural or papers or something in one of the outposts, there's got to be something somewhere that shows the whole thing."

His powering up did not require nearly as much pomp and circumstance. Fritz closed his eyes briefly, his mind flicking towards the whip and the prospect of Chronos, calling both to him - and a few seconds later, the warm glow of his guise settled into him, fading fast afterwards.

Celsus shifted a little, absently twisting the whip in his hands.

"So far, just the charms," he said weakly. "But...well, it's at least a start."

'Not at present' and 'there might be' is clear. You honestly have no clue and haven't thought to look before. Why not give me the actual truth of the matter? Worry that you'll upset me? Like the b*****d offspring of a cognitive bias with Hanlon's Razor. The glow and fade of a knight taking on their mantle was enviably efficient. Thraen cradled his phone in one hand while turning over and tracing his other thumb along the disk of the Surrounding. "Who makes the charms? Or where do they come from? They are finite? "

"And would touching one specific glyph make the transport go there? Or is it some other process? There's 12 glyphs, one each to the signs of the western zodiac. There must be some way to go to a specific outpost? Or what of getting to a knight's post? How would I use this charm to visit 'Celsus', for instance? Transport made on purpose for war is rarely imprecise- if it was, it would be phased out or improved. The Roman roads across all their empire prove that well enough. "

He felt a flush of shame start to appear across his cheeks; felt a tremble in his wrists that seemed to ebb down into his hands and make his fingers shake where they lay against his sides. Celsus tried to make his expression normal, but didn't quite make it.

"They are finite, yes," he said. "I know not where they come from, but I have assumed that they were created by the members of the Zodiac court, or perhaps even Lady Chronos herself in an effort to allow more unity between us and the rest of the White Moon."

It felt strange saying "us." There was no "us" anymore. Celsus was not even sure there had been in the first place.

"I have not ever tried to visit one specific outpost by using the passport," he said tentatively. "But it does sound like a reasonable conclusion that pressing on a singular glyph should take you to a specific outpost, whichever you're intending to go to."

His expression, however, shifted visibly, startlingly at the mention of his Wonder. What little color there was left in Celsus' face seemed to drain instantly.

"No - !" he blurted, and it came out too fast, too quickly. Humiliation burned bright across his face, and Celsus reigned in the embarrassing word, trying to shift the conversation away from the panic that seemed to be welling in his chest.

"I mean...that is to say," he said, in a slightly more level voice, "Wonders are approached through different means. I recite an Oath to get to mine, I haven't ever heard of anyone getting to a Wonder by other means."

From the sheer amount of blushing, flushing, and shuddering this man did between the two times he'd encountered the Knight, Thraen considered it a universal miracle the man hadn't passed out, or that he had that much blood for expressing as well as running his other bodily necessities. The emotive nature of the conversation, to begin with, was a mystery. What was going on with Chronos Knights, or the Surrounding, that even talking about it involved so much ? He almost opened his mouth to further clarify on a point about the Passports, but the Knight was positively exclaiming in a panic.

Thraen's right brow ratcheted up about three notches while he stared hard, trying to read something more in Celsus. " 'For instance' is not 'let's go.' It's an example. "

Thraen's weight shifted to relaxing on one leg, the other bending at the knee to tap the stone toe against the concrete floor under them as though he was a runner testing the grip of a pair of cleats. "You have some hang ups about your Wonder? Is there some effect of the Surrounding that makes its Knights and the Zodiac unwell? Is it dangerous to go? That you mean to NOT say and cover in subterfuge a lot about something, is plain."

Privately, Celsus found it a miracle he hadn't passed out, either. He felt exhausted simply through his own inability to provide proper answers and just sheer normal conversation, his embarrassment over all of this only serving to make him feel more flustered.

Thraen probably thinks I'm an idiot. Or possibly stupid, Celsus thought wearily, casting him a look as his shoulders slumped.

"I'm sorry," he said, and it came out low, raw with truthfulness. "Really. I didn't mean to - I'm sure you think I'm some sort of moron by now, and I wouldn't blame you, I'm acting bloody ridiculous."

Celsus ran a hand through his hair, easing out a breath.

"I don't mind taking you to the Surrounding, it's just...my Wonder is problematic right now. For me." He swallowed hard. "It's - not dangerous, I just...I have personal reasons for not wanting to attend that I can't explain, but I have no problems with taking you to the Surrounding."

He closed his eyes briefly and then opened them again, leveling a look at Thraen.

"I'm sorry," he said again, and it was less strained, less relaxed, calmer and quiet. "You've been very respectful to me."

The look, the lampshading and certainty of the results of what was plain, Pain, struck chords Thraen had heard too close and to what could in the silence after only mean ill fortune. A cracked starseed once had that same desperation. And a lover clutched in a foyer in a pool of life.

The eternal didn't speak any reply at first to all the apologies given wing. He stepped the paces on long shanks and reached out as he stepped near. His arm wrapped back over the Knight's shoulder, hand laced up into the back of the man's hair and softly bumped their two forehead's together. "You don't need to apologize to me because you are in pain. When you are ready, only then, if I can be of help to you then let me know. "

Gardens. Succor, strength, serenity, sustenance, support. Bulwark of replenishment to soul, mind and body, are they not? Why am I not, stuck in the title of 'soldier'. 'Senshi'. I wish I had something better than words to offer. But it always starts there, doesn't it. Like Aquarius. Trust so rare and so often the doors and ways lay shut even to those who would wish to help. Old or new friends.

"Only to the Surrounding, at your comfort. My curiosity of more isn't important as your health. " Thraen backed a step, drawing hand down to just rest on the other's shoulder.

The silence felt tense; Celsus wondered if he'd overstepped his bounds, wondered if he'd managed to put Thraen off enough that he'd insulted him, or something else of similar note, and he watched him, somewhat apprehensively, as he approached.

He had not expected such a calm gesture of reassurance.

Celsus felt himself stiffen automatically at the nearness, his chest tightening; but he did not pull away, the touch of Thraen's forehead to his own oddly comforting, even if he was not used to such a thing. He gave a little nod, feeling his throat constrict stupidly.

He closed his eyes, briefly, and eased out a breath.

"Thank you," said Celsus with meaning, and passed a hand across his face, rubbing at his throbbing temples. He offered Thraen a small smile, still wearied, but less strained than it had been a moment before.

"You're very kind," he said quietly. "And I appreciate your offer of help - and your willingness to continue to work with me."

He drew a breath.

"To the Surrounding, then. Shall we?"

At the very least, this attempt at comeradie hadn't ended up with a bloodied lip. Better, there was a smile and a careful resetting of calm. Good. Yes. There. We're safe. I'm not a threat. You're not panicking. Ease. Ease, and breath, knight of Chronos.

There was a calm in his own chest, with a mirrored breath drawn and let go, as though sympathetic magic were something that could even exist in a world with so much deliberate and accounted for expenditure. "Not as often as I'd like to be."

"Aye." Thraen kept his hand on the man's shoulder in case the magic of the charm worked the same as that of Homeworlds and the Pearls. It made sense it should, given it was attached to the phone as much as the other two as a conduit. With short finagling, he flipped the disk onto the face of the phone to test if touching a specific sigil effected the teleport at all, using his pointer, while he thumbed the phone and focused. To the rainbow path.

And pressed the icon.
And they vanished.
