Nervously, Sangmu hurried through the darkening forest. It had been light just moments before. Now, the darkness moved in like something grasping and hungry. She hadn't thought that twilight would come so soon, and certainly not so quickly.

Nervous, she looked around. Places that were familiar in the day were becoming alien in the night. She was a herd soquili by birth and by nature. She had never spent a night with no one around by herself and the thought of not being able to find her herd until morning filled her with dread. What if there were wolves in the woods? Or something worse? All the horror stories she'd heard as a foal were coming back to her now, the ones of the butterfly-winged demon and tigers with glowing eyes.

She shuddered. She took a deep breath, had second thoughts, then decided to go through with it.

"Hello?" she called, voice high-pitched and shrill with anxiety.

Indri normally didn't have problems with being alone. They had split off from their herd months ago and now lived nearby their brother and his mate. Indri spent a lot of time with Syri, but of course Syri and Rusalka needed time to themselves every now and then too. Indri wasn't bothered by this and most of the time wasn't bothered even when they had to walk home in darkness. Tonight though, they were a little worried.

While training with Xaijin, Xaijin had said something troubling. She'd mentioned deer carcasses found dismembered but not eaten. One set of giant paw prints had been found in the area, and it seemed that one animal had been the culprit. Some soquili like Xaijin had paws, of course, but ordinary soquili didn't usually slaughter animals without need. Skinwalker. That had been the word muttered between them and Indri felt their blood run colder just considering it.

They heard the voice call. Instantly, they froze. Couldn't skinwalkers sound like a normal soquili when they wanted? Their ears swiveled one way and the next as they internally debated, but they finally decided to answer. "Hello?" Indri called back, heading to where they had heard the sound come from.

Grateful, Sangmu rushed to the sound of the other voice. She saw there a kirin of ambiguous gender, but definitely not scary. Her eyes welled up with relieved tears and she fought past a choking sensation to speak.

"Hi!" she blurted out. "Can you help me? I lost my herd. "We're called the Padmapani herd and I was just passing through here. We're traveling with a big golden elder." Hayagriva was pretty hard to miss. She figured that the kirin would certainly remember if they'd seen him. Behind her, an animal cried out. She gasped and stared over her shoulder, but saw nothing.

When Indri saw the mare they felt silly for ever thinking she might be a skinwalker. Instead, she was a young and lovely half-unicorn with flowers in her hair. That was about as different from a skinwalker as you could get without being an angeni.

While she was being spooked by an owl cry, Indri answered her question. "I haven't seen a herd like that," they admitted. "Where did you last see them?"
