Topaz wandered the aisles of the library, staring up at all the vast shelves and occasionally pausing to eyeball an interesting book spine. She'd already mentally marked a few books for reading, but right now her purpose was the examine the layout of the books. What kind of sorting system did the library use, where the sections started and stopped, and what generally went where. That sort of thing. It made finding information in the future much easier if she had an idea of where to look.

She was waiting for one of her classmates. She and Sariya had the same majors, and two heads were better than one when it came to research and bouncing theories back and forth. Classes hadn't officially started yet, but schedules were being posted and lists of recommended reading materials were showing up on notification boards. That was how she and Sariya had met and realized they shared classes.

They'd struck up a light conversation, and figuring there was no time like the present, decided to get together to check out the library and get in a bit of studying. Topaz was secretly amused, given the general relationship between her race and Sariya's, and was curious to see how they'd get along.

[quote"Koiasi"]Hopefully this is okay! If you had something else in mind for a starter, poke at me and I can rewrite things.

User ImageSariya was running late. Well, truthfully, she wasn't running late, yet, but she knew she'd be a few minutes off schedule by the time she arrived. She hated being late, even if it was only for a couple of minutes. She prided herself in always arriving early, but today wouldn't happen that way, not that it could have been avoided, she had run late at work and she couldn't have very well shown up without at least showering and changing her clothing.

When she finally arrived at the library, she wasn't all that surprised to find Topaz waiting for her. She hadn't known Topaz all that well yet, but the girl seemed interesting and she didn't mind having someone to study with. "Sorry I'm late." She gave a brief smile and laid her bag across the back of a chair. "Work ran a bit late and I couldn't get out. Believe it or not we get a bit busy this time of year, everyone wants hot drinks since it's so cold out." Sariya worked as a barista at the local cafe. She enjoyed the job, but it could get really monotonous at times. "I brought some drinks. Though they might be a little cold by now. I tried to keep them warm." She sat down a drink carrier. "I hope I got you the right one."

Topaz turned at the sound of the library door opening followed by hurried footsteps. She spotted Sariya and smiled in welcome. Sariya's explanation made her laugh a little. "Don't worry about it! I wasn't here that long, and work comes before social obligations anyway. I can completely believe you've been busy though. I've been in and out of cafes a lot lately myself!"

She accepted one of the drinks from Sariya and took a sip. The taste of coffee and vanilla, still warm enough to be pleasant, made her sigh in pleasure. "This is perfect. You are so awesome!" She took another sip, then carefully set the drink on the table.

"I was looking through the library trying to get a feel for the organization. I think I found most of the sections that would be relevant. Is there anything in particular you wanted to start with," she asked.

User ImageSariya nodded softly a slight smile on her face though it was also a little apologetic, "It seems like a lot of people have been.. Then again, I can't blame people for wanting a warm drink when it's so cold out." She couldn't wait for warmer weather herself, not that she terribly minded the cold, but she never had been much of a fan of constantly doing the same thing over and over and she was feeling that itch for a change already.

When she accepted the drink, she was glad she got something she could drink. She never was sure of what everyone's preference could be since there were so many different options. She picked up the Chai tea for herself and took a small sip, glad that it wasn't totally cool yet. "You're welcome! I'm glad you like it."

Looking around the library, she shook her head to the question. She wasn't entirely sure what they should begin with, since classes hadn't started yet and she wasn't really sure where they should begin, in all honesty. "Perhaps we should start with the 50 Year War first? Perhaps the reasons and causes for why it happened?" She was just tossing ideas out there, though she thought it was probably a good place to start. "Or even the reason that the Above and Below were cut off from each other? Or what it means now that it's open again?" There was the hot topic of the Above and Below being allowed to intermingle again.

Topaz nodded. It sounded like a pretty good place to start, and quite relevant. She'd certainly flipped through a couple that gave mention to it, though she hadn't done any in-depth reading since she was the type to get holed up in a corner and forget the world around her when she really got into a book. She would likely have gotten so engrossed in whatever she was reading she'd forget the time and that Sariya was probably waiting for her.

"I know a few that might be good starting points," she said, then went off to fetch them. She snagged four of the most likely sources for general information, then returned to the table, setting them down.

"I hear classes are supposed to open up pretty soon though, so it'll be nice to get some studying done beforehand," she commented cheerily, picking up her cup and taking another sip. She eyeballed a book about Daydreams and their involvement in the war, then pulled it over and flipped it open to scan through the table of contents.

Koiasi
No worries! Also did you know history and anthropology classes are open this month?

jinxgirl5
I had heard that they might be? I hadn't had a lot of chance to check out classes lately though since I've been super busy.

User ImageSariya couldn't help but nod, agreeing with Topaz. She wasn't used to studying with other people and wasn't quite sure how to begin. When the other woman took down the books and flipped the pages, Sariya pulled her seat closer to watch while absentmindedly stirring her tea. She couldn't help but feel that perhaps Topaz was more into some of these things than she was, most of her interest had been from the fact that her parents were both Archaeologists before they died and her father had sparked an interest in learning more about people and other cultures. "I know it's kind of off topic... But have you ever wanted to travel to the Above?" The question came out before she even had time to process she was speaking. She had no interest in romanticizing the idea of what it was like, but she couldn't help but be curious about it and about the people that came from there. She picked up one of the books that had a couple of pictures of cities from there. "My parents had always talked about the cities up there and how different they were compared to here.. I always wandered if it was true." She knew it wasn't conducive to studying, but this was her first opportunity to actually ask someone else's opinion on the matter.

Topaz looked up from the book, initially surprised at the question, then gave it some thought. "It's still such a new idea that I hadn't really thought of it before," she admitted, tapping her fingers against the side of the cup clutched in her hands.

"I would like to see history from their point of view, how they live and what all that is like. I've always been a bit of an adventurer, and social anthropology has always been interesting to me." She hummed and took another sip of her drink, still thinking.

"I feel like if I went to Above, I'd be going to Above, you know? It takes more than a sightseeing trip to immerse yourself in a culture. That would require preparation, having purposes and goals all lined up. For me, anyway. There's still so much going on right now that I'm working through, and I'd want to get all that settled so that I feel settled before I'd made a trip to Above. Otherwise I think my focus would be all over the place and my observations would suffer from it, if that makes sense."

Topaz chuckled in a slightly embarrassed way, hoping she hadn't rambled on too much. "But I would like to go one day, yes."

Koiasi
They are, 'til the end of the month. I already entered Topaz in 'em, thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't seen them.

I dunno if I'll have time to check them out, but thanks for letting me know!

User ImageSariya was a bit surprised to hear that Topaz hadn't thought of it. It was something that had been on her mind way before the Above had even opened. Her mother and father would tell her stories (mostly likely urban legends or things from books since they had never been there) when she was a child and it had sparked a huge interest in her even then. "I guess I'm slightly obsessed." She added with a slight chuckle. "I've always wanted to see what it was like. I want to see how different the people are, what the weather is like, if things even smell different.. you know? There has to be so many hidden treasures up there that we couldn't even begin to dream of. Things that seem so normal to us might seem so strange to them." She couldn't wait to meet another Daydream to find out, though she hadn't been that lucky yet.

"Oh no, I completely agree. I'd love to immerse myself in the culture. I'd love to see the local hang outs, what kind of cuisine they have.. to travel the streets where all the locals do and to see things from their point of view." She seemed almost in a dream-like state when she spoke. "I think that's where we differ though. I'd prefer the exact opposite. I'd rather go on a whim and not be prepared. That way I can experience it without a contingency plan and everything that happens is raw and exciting, without my influence, if that makes sense?" She leaned forward in her chair, excitement in her eyes. "But.. you're probably right, I do have a lot here to do before being able to embark on a trip there." She sat back again, her eyes having a faraway look to them. "But it'd be so exciting.." She smirked a little and nodded. "At least we can both agree on that."

Topaz nodded understandingly as Sariya spoke. Everyone had certain things they liked or could be obsessive over. For Topaz personally, it was artifacts. Those ancient items that gave a glimpse into a time long passed, in what styles were like and how people lived. She loved those little glimpses, and was actually pretty good at restorations. Nothing super old, but she found antique stores everywhere she traveled and she liked to get items that needed a bit of fixing. It was how she'd gotten started, and it was something she really enjoyed.

"I've already met a Dryad," she confided, smiling a little at the memory of the conversation. "It was when I was visiting the area around Leviathan. He was pretty nice. Didn't mind me asking all sorts of questions about what his culture was like." Topaz shook her head in sympathy. "The cold doesn't agree with them at all. I guess the weather is a lot warmer in Above than it is here." She hadn't asked Narra much about physical descriptions of his world and what it was like where he lived. Part of her was curious, but another part of her wondered if she'd really grasp the concepts until she'd seen them with her own eyes. Likely she would just try to match them up with concepts she was already familiar with. She was still debating if she wanted to ask or not, or wait to see it for herself.

To be honest, Sariya had also enjoyed artifacts and learning the history behind objects, but her interests turned mostly to wondering what people did with said things and how it impacted civilization. She loved trying to understand different people and had had a previously hard time trying to decide between Anthropology and Psychology.

When Topaz told her that she had already met a Dryad, Sariya couldn't help but be a little jealous. She hadn't met anyone from the above yet. "Really? What were they like?" She sat up, her attention fully on the Baphomet. She couldn't help but take a couple of notes down. She couldn't imagine how hot it must be up there compared to what they were used to and how hard it might be on Dryads in particular. "Someday.. maybe I'll be able to meet one. That is really neat though! Perhaps, someday, we could go to the Above together. I'd love to see it with someone who understands my interest on the topic." She smiled softly.

"That would be nice," Topaz agreed. "Maybe by the time we get to go, we'll have made some Daydream friends who wouldn't mind showing us around. Exploring on your own is awesome, but locals know all the secrets and best little hidden shops to poke around in." She always tried to make friends with locals, since in bigger cities they knew their way around and in small villages you were more accepted the more others could vouch for you. Not always, but more often than naught. Besides, it was always great to make new friends.

She hummed a bit as she considered her Dryad friend. "His name is Narra. He carries an enchanted thermos with hot drinks in it to help him beat the cold, but it still gets to him pretty bad." She chuckled. "We kinda gave each other a bit of a fright. I was leaning down and looking at some of their outdoor decor, and he thought I was hurt or something. I didn't hear him coming up behind me, so he startled me and that startled him further. He was really polite about it though. Offered me a drink from his thermos, and then we actually walked into town together since he was on a shopping trip. I probably dominated the conversation, but he didn't seem put out by my talking. Mostly I asked what Dryads are like. How their bodies are structured and how that affects them physically, how their social statuses differ from ours. I tried not to bombard him too badly. He asked a few of his own questions in return though, so tit for tat."

Topaz propped her chin in her hand, looking thoughtful. "It seemed like I was one of the first people he really got into a conversation with since coming here. It might just be because he spent a lot of time holed up in his room away from the cold. He didn't mention anything like discrimination, anyway." She sighed. "I'm hoping it was the former, rather than the later, anyway."

"Yeah.. it really does." Sariya was lost in thought for a few seconds, her fingers trace the rim of her paper cup. She wasn't all that good at making friends, much less engaging herself in a foreign populace that she knew little direct knowledge about. Still, Topaz made a good point. "I might have to rely on you a little for that. I'm not the best with words." She stated candidly. "I tend to go on exploring on my own, but you're right, locals can definitely teach us a thing or two, and I'm sure they could show us all the good spots that we might miss on our own." She couldn't help but wonder what it might be like to see a new city and new people, and just what they might discover.

"He sounds nice." Sariya agreed. She had seen a couple of dryads here and there while working at the coffee shop, though they weren't all that common. She wanted to ask them all kinds of questions, but figured it was rude so she kept her comments to herself. Still, it was interesting to see how some of them had integrated themselves so easily into a new culture, she was unsure she could do the same with so much ease. "Maybe I could meet him someday." It was more of a statement to carry on the conversation, but she definitely would like to meet him, if she could. "I can't imagine what it must be like for him here, to be so far away from everything you've grown up with." Okay, so in a way she could. Her whole life had been turned upside down when her parents died, and even though it wasn't the same thing, she was sure there were some similarities when you had no one but yourself to rely on.

Topaz hummed softly. "That's not necessarily a bad thing, though I can see how people might misunderstand and take offence," she said, having been there a time or two before. There were some people out there who would be determined to dislike you no matter what you were like as a person, and some who took every opinion they didn't like as an attack against them. She tried not to let such people get her down, since it was inevitably you would run into them at some point.

"Narra is very nice," she agreed, switching back over to the other topic. "I'm sure you'll get a chance at some point. He doesn't go to school here, but one of his sisters does so he shows up from time to time to visit. Maybe we'll be able to find a day when we're all free and I can introduce you." Topaz took another sip of her drink, thinking. Narra did seem to cope well, though he did clearly feel some effects from culture shock. She'd given him a few tips on generalizations of certain races during their chats, to help familiarize him with Nightmare culture.

"Have you seen any of the other Daydream races yet," Topaz asked, feeling curious. "I bet with the weather being colder than they're used to, a lot of them come in to get hot drinks. I've only seen the Dryads and Fey."

"I suppose. It doesn't make it terribly easy to make friends though." Sariya commented as she took the last drink of her tea. Though truth be told, she was both quiet and honest.. which most people didn't like or were too intimidated by. She wasn't sure which it was, but she could imagine that she was hard to approach regardless, not that she wanted to be. She just wasn't all that terribly social of a person. Which is what surprised her about Topaz approaching her to study together and made her respect the Baphomet all the more. She was used to being overlooked on most occasions and having someone to talk to did help.

She sat up straight when she heard the statement, her eyes blinking rapidly. "His sister?" As much as she tried to keep her voice even she knew she couldn't keep the surprise from it. She felt her own cheeks flush at the thoughts running through her head, there were certainly things that Topaz had kept out of the conversation then, not that she'd expect her to tell a near stranger all the details about her relationship with another person. Still, she couldn't help but ask, "So he's more than an acquaintance then?" She knew it was rude to assume, but it was also rude to ask, but she never did have a good filter.

To the next question she gave a slight nod, "I've seen a few here and there. Probably the Elves stick out the most, since a lot of them seem to love to order the most complicated things they can in an effort to seem higher than most... I haven't really talked to a whole lot of them much more than taking an order or two. I do see Dryads and Fey on a rare occasion or two." She added, thinking about a couple of the Elves who made a complete ruckus in the shop a month or so back.

Topaz smiled. "I consider Narra a pretty good friend," she commented, and left it at that. She did find the Dryad quite intriguing and enjoyed spending time with him, but she didn't want to assume how Narra himself felt. He was a cheerful sort, kind and occasionally possessed of a sense of humor that bordered on cheesy, though her impression on first meeting him had been of someone simply quiet and polite. There was no telling what other facets of personality might lie beneath the surface.

"I've never personally talked with an Elf, but I do hear rumors. Do the stereotypes run true, do you think, or are all they just coffee snobs," she asked with a soft laugh. She wasn't too fussy with her own drinks, but she'd been in line behind some people who were very exacting when it came to the mixing of their beverages. Cafes were almost like their own little worlds, supporting their own little groups of cultures. It was fascinating to watch, and when Topaz had time to kill she liked hanging at local cafes and guessing who the die-hard regulars were and what kind of crowds did the cafe itself typically draw. Study groups were pretty common, though there was also a lot of random chatter.
