Was there anyone that didn't love the playground? Piper always looked forward to spending her time outside once classes were over for the day. She didn't mind her classes really, in fact she was quite attentive in them. Or, at least she thought she was. Her grades were okay at least. She figured she'd get more serious about them eventually. What she lived for was getting outside and stretching those legs of hers and playing with the other kids that were out there.

She'd already been out there for a while, playing tag with some of the other kids. She'd been running around long enough that she was actually a bit out of breathe at this point. As much as she'd love to keep racing around with them, it seemed like the others were pretty ready for a break as well.

"Let's take a break and then pick things back up where we left them!" They all agreed and went their separate ways for the time being/ She headed toward the water fountain, she was seriously parched. She'd have to consider bringing a water bottle with her outside from now on!

Saerun was not a fan of playing outside. Playing outside meant she had to engage with others... or that they'd be more likely to come up to her, which was probably even worse. As nice as the Academy was, kids were still kids, and Saerun knew she looked scary. So, during this outing, she'd mostly stuck to herself, remaining on the perimeter of the playground unless told to go join the others on the actual structures.

By the end of it she was rather tired, and thirsty. So thirsty. She was about to get some water from the fountain, but another freshling - a hybrid? - stepped up right before she was about to. Oh no. Did she miss the line? Was there a line? Worriedly she looked around for a moment before realizing that it had just been coincidence. Rather than make a fuss, she stepped back, signing a small apology before realizing the other kid probably didn't know what she'd said.

To be fair, Piper had her sights dead set on the water fountain. She didn't even notice if anyone else was making their way there as well. She she stepped up to it though she noticed the other freshling out of the corner of her eye. Did they just make a gesture of some kind? Oh, she hadn't notice a thing. Were they trying to get her attention for something? Well it would have to wait until she got some water. She held up one clawed finger in a gesture that was meant to be a friendly way to say "one moment" as she bent to take a gulp of water. She stood away from the fountain when she was done.

"Ahaha, sorry about that I was on a mission and when I'm on a mission I tend to tune out the world. Did you need something?" If only she had been paying more attention in the first place. Jeez, good job Piper. Like you couldn't be more spaced out if space suddenly came crashing down around you. The other freshling was rather curious looking, but she'd learned from her time in the orphanage not to judge a book by it's cover. So while she did give the other freshling a good 'once over', her eyes didn't linger anywhere in particular for very long.

Oh.. just a moment. Okay. She hadn't upset them or anything. Still, watching her drink only reminded her of how dry her mouth was... Suddenly she realized she was staring and averted her gaze elsewhere. The longer she stared, the more likely they were to notice her eyes, after all. Or. Y'know. Her teeth. She was content to believe that the other freshling would leave once they'd gotten their fill, but oh no. That wasn't the case. They asked if she needed something

Some water.

She signed without really looking up again, then kicked herself mentally. She'd have to talk. "Jusht shome water...." Ugh, she hated that lisp but it was necessary to speak like that if she didn't want to n** her lips or something... Hopefully the other kid would move. "I di'nt shee you eisher."

Those hand movements, well. That must have been what the Nightmare had been doing before. Piper knew what it was, it was sign language. She had always planned to learn it one day. But she had only taken her lessons far enough to sign really basic greetings, her own name, and the alphabet. Shoot, well. That was kicking her in the butt now wasn't it. She jumped out of the way the second the other freshling said she was there for water though.

"Ah, I'm sorry for getting in the way like that." She gestured for the geist and...litch? Nightmare to come up to the fountain. She decided to wait for the other to finish though. Maybe she'd have something fun for them to do afterwords. At the very least she wanted to ask her about learning sign language.

Thank goodness she' moved. "Ish okay, shanksh..." Saerun nodded quickly, then stepped up to get some water. Carefully. After sating her thirst, she stepped back and... noticed the other girl was still there. Oh Nine, hopefully it wasn't because of something bad... had she said something? Done something? What if she'd mistaken the signing for something bad? That had happened before, but that was at the orphanage.

"Did... you need shomeshing?" She spared a glance at her, nervously clasping her fingers together as her tendrils quivered, then shrank down against her limbs. Hopefully it wouldn't be anything bad...

Oh no, was Piper scaring her? She wasn't scary was she? She tended to think her half-fluffy tail and big ears gave her a soft look. She waved her hands in front of her, as if to say "no" and then once again held up one clawed finger. Her crossed her arms for a moment and her foot tapped against the ground a couple times she she wracked her brain for the few signs that she did know. It would be something she'd never to know if she wanted to be a doctor!

Finally she managed to sign out, 'Hello. My name is P-I-P-E-R.' She had to spell out her name and it probably took her a while to do so as she pretty much had to go through the entire alphabet in her head before she could remember which letter was what and so on.

"And, that's about all I know. I started learning while I was with my Mom in Boreas, but I haven't been keeping up with my studies here! Would you be able to help me out?" Her brought her hands together in front of her, begging the other student to help her out. All the while her tail wagged excitedly behind her.

Saerun blinked, catching the signing out of the corner of her eye. She raised her head a little to get a better look, then smiled a bit. She did know how to sign! That was a good sign, maybe she could stop-- oh. She didn't know much else. Well, that kind of.. put a damper on things. Still, she could at least repeat the same with her own name.

Hello. My name is S-A-E-R-U-N. Sort of, anyway. The best that she could without getting into special letters or accent markers. It would do. "That'sh a lot better shan a lot of... people here..." She nodded, stumbling a little her words to make sure they were all intelligible. "Um..." She trailed off, looking back to the bench she'd been sitting on...

It was now occupied by two caretakers, one of them was motioning for her to keep talking to Piper. Welp. Guess she was stuck with this, then. "Sh-shure... I could try to help..." She nodded, then tucked some hair behind her ear.

Piper followed Saerun's gaze to the bench where the caretakers were, but she missed the little wave that had the other nightmare sticking around to help her out. She didn't think too much of it really. She was used to interacting with shy kids as much as hyper kids at this point. She had found out that all of them made good playmates in one way or another. She really hadn't met anyone she disliked.

She couldn't help but jumped in the air and clap her hands when Saerun agreed to help her with her sign language. Ah! There was one other thing she knew how to sign though. Carefully she signed out, Thank you! And even said it outloud as well. "Thank you so much! I can't wait to surprise my Mom with this!" Oh boy, Rosali and her brothers would be so proud of her when she got to see them all again! Not to brag or anything, but she loved to show off her talents around her family. Well, around anyone really.

"Let's go sit on the swings while we practice Saerun!" She started to skip her way over to where the swing sets were. They were one of the less popular areas on the playground, but she liked them! It would be fun to sit there and work on her signs.

Her mom... did her mom sign, too? She blinked, watching Piper for a moment until she mentioned going to sit on the swings... She turned her gaze to them - they seemed to be relatively unoccupied today, so.... That wouldn't be bad. She nodded, then skittered after Piper - she wasn't one for skipping but keeping up with the hybrid was something she felt a need to do.

Once there, she settled herself onto a swing, then looked at Piper. "Um... what stuff do you wanna know...? Doesh your mom shign too...?" She couldn't help but ask. Knowing more people whose relatives signed would be nice, considering the amount of signers in her own family.

Piper only looked back once to make sure Saerun was following her before she zipped on over to the swings. As she had thought, they were fairly abandoned. It wasn't as popular this time of year. They were a bit too cold for actual swinging, but they made comfortable seats. Or at least they would, once they warmed up a bit. She turned in her seat so that she was facing Searun and leaning into the chains the seat hung from.

"Hmmm, anything that's pretty common to come up with in conversation first? I know the alphabet and some other simple things. 'My name is...', 'Thanks', 'Welcome'. 'Mountains'...My Mom's a doctor! In order to interact with some of her patients, she learned sign language!" Piper nodded matter of factly. She demonstrated that she knew what she had said before. As for where to begin, well that would be pretty hard honestly.

"How about, we just talk about things? And as you talk, if you can sign as well? Kinda just a casual back and forth thing. Then I can learn more about you too!" Her smile as bright as she considered what to ask Saerun first.

"Ah! Let's start with this. I have three brothers! Do you have any siblings?"

Thankfully it seemed that Piper wasn't going to start swinging... she wasn't sure she could get herself started without a push. She wiggled herself into a better position to face Piper, wrapping one arm around the chain nearest the grimm-hybrid. "Okay, shat shoundsh like a good playsh to shtart..." Sae nodded while she watched her sign, they were all understandable...

"My mom ish a univershity shtudent...! Sho ish my dad... They adopted me not a long time ago." She grinned a little, as best as she could, and signed along the words for 'mom,' 'dad,' 'university,' 'student', and 'adopted.' "You have a lot of shiblingsh too? I have a big family..." She paused, counting them all up while she signed off the words for 'sibling' and 'family.'

"Shere'sh.... um... Five? 'Caushe shey adopted me an' Melody and shen shey have Muninn, Hati, an' Mani... but mom hash a shibling from here - she callsh him "Uncle Tobiash" an' dad hash one too I shink but I haven't met her yet. Dunno what to call her." She shrugged a little. Her family was... large... "Are you the youngesht?" She signed along the word for that so Piper could see.
