The storm that had blown through their little family grown had been one of the fiercest that Hallon could ever recall. Once the howling gales had finally quieted and the pounding rain ceased to little more than a drizzle, Hallon ventured out eagerly to explore. The rains could bring many interesting things! Trinkets and baubles from far off lands... Sitareh would be able to tell him where they were from, and then he could daydream of places he would likely never see...

Some younger trees had fallen, unable to stand the savagery of the storm. Hallon felt some sympathy for them, but he knew that their fallen trunks and branches would provide new homes for other animals. Even when they decayed, they would nurture the very soil beneath them, and new life would begin again.

Halon nosed at some of the downed branches snuffling at the leaves in search for anything that might have been way up high and out of reach. Little did he know, he was going to find far more than he bargained for today...

Small animals were beginning to withdraw to nest and burrow, all signs that a storm was moving in. Still, in spite of the wind and the chill and the silence, a certain dark-coated filly went frisking into the woods to find an adventure. The weather was just fine in her mind, and while she planned to be back before the rain began, she paid little mind to the black clouds brewing behind the gray stormfront.

Eteri Voska crept away into the woods on quiet hooves, her mismatched eyes wide with wonder. Due to the quiet nature of her father, and the similar attitude of her mother, she rather doubted that either of her parents would approve of her plan to go out on a lark. Add to that the fact that she was now traveling outside the usual meadows and paths her family roamed, and she was sure her father would be concerned indeed.

'But it's a bit boring at home.' She rationalized, picking up a trot and delighting at each new tree and stone. 'So just a quick adventure, before the rains come.'

Waking up pinned beneath tree limbs and brush, the bay filly made a soft panicked noise and thrashed recklessly in her muddy prison. Wet soil clung to her, darkening her white markings and muddying the sunshine hue of her mane. Scattered with damp leaves belonging to the branches that were were laced over her, she realized that the cage above her was formed by a scattering of older limbs and some newer trees. Beyond the shades of brown and gray and gree, Eteri could see the faintest glimpses of sky. But they seemed an eternity away, beyond the network trapping her to the ground as well as the large trees looming above. To make matters worse, what she could see she didn't recognize in the slightest, which meant she was far from home and lacking ideas on how to get back.

Attempting to right herself, Eteri realized that one hind hoof was caught in the net of branches, and her bid to freedom caused it to pull against the confines, tearing a pained sound from her. At about the same moment she heard the sounds of hooves, and in her dazed state attempted to thrash free again.

'What's out there? Skinwalker? A kalona?' She wondered, frantically ruffling the branches with her movements. 'What am I going to do now?'

Stilling on the chance that whatever was out there hadn't noticed her attempting to escape, Eteri closed her eyes tightly and tried to come up with some sort of plan. She wasn't like her brother who usually had a plan or a retort for everything, but for a moment she tried, hoping at the same time that whatever was out there meant her no harm or had wandered onward without taking note of her.

His ears were stiff with alarm at the pained sound of something very small, and Hallon did not think twice before he began to gingerly paw through the trees limbs, his eyes hoping to catch a glimpse of what he assumed to be a fox or a squirrel. When his bright gaze fell upon a young filly, instead.... well, he merely stood there for a moment, disbelieving. He could almost hear his mother chastising him for gawking like a fool, and Hallon soon spoke, his tone soft and meant to soothe. "Do not fear. I'll get you out. Hold still; you may hurt yourself if you struggle." A foal with an injured--or worse, broken--leg would be horrible. Hallon prayed she was merely pinned and not worse off.

Perhaps it was because, bound to the trees as he was, he understood how they moved and worked. With careful, precise nudges, Hallon worked quickly to free the small creature. "My name is Hallon," He spoke, occasionally breaking off to study the puzzle before him with thought. "My family and I reside in this grove of trees." The chatter was meant to reassure her that he was a friend and not a foe while he worked. "That was quite a storm! I was out searching for treasures, for my sister. It is fortunate you did not--ah!"

He seized a branch in his teeth and rocked his weight backwards onto his hing legs. With a groan of protest, the tree shifted slightly--just enough that the filly would be able to slide her leg free and scamper to freedom, if she tried.

‘Let me out, let me out, let me out.’ Heart beating like a hummingbird’s wings trapped in her chest, Eteri Voska attempted to still her instinctive reactions to thrash. She wanted so dearly to be free of the net of branches and brush, but each twist caused bark to scrape her soft coat and her trapped leg to twinge. There didn’t appear to be a way out of this, and somewhere out there was something large and strange. Something scary and foreign to her.

When the branches above began to shift and rustle like something was clawing them aside, Eteri swallowed another surge of terror and closed her eyes. Resolving to be very still indeed and hope whatever it was decided berries or branches were its preferred diet, the filly couldn’t help a surprised squeak when the pawing stopped for several moments of silence. The soft greeting made her flail reactively, eyes snapping open wide as she looked up in shock. The stranger above her wasn’t scary at all (or didn’t seem to be?). There were no large fangs or claws in sight, no blood or gaping maw.

“T-thank you.” She murmured as he advised her to be still so he could rescue her. “H.. Hallon. I am Eteri.”

The soft, soothing tone of his voice helped her relax, staying still as he began to toss and drag branches aside. Hearing that he lived in the grove of trees, not unlike her family, was also soothing in a way. Familiar, even if she didn’t know him, it made her more willing to trust. Hearing that he was looking for his sister (probably like her parents were, truth be told) also made her relax. He seemed, nice.

When the weight of branches lifted away, she scrambled to her feet and scrabbled out from under the cage of limbs. Her back foot ached, twinging unhappily from the time it had been tangled in brush, but it held her weight enough for her to get out from under the tree so that Hallon could drop it back into the pile again.

“Thank you for your help, I am sorry for the trouble.” She recited dutifully, looking up at him with wide eyes. “I swear I didn’t mean to stay out during the storm… I just wanted to travel a bit, before it showed up. My family doesn’t wander very often, it seemed like the only chance I’d get and… and….”

She sighed, hanging her head and fixing her eyes in the muddy ground. The grass beneath her hooves was springy, though some strands were bent and broken under scattered tree limbs or a blanketing of needles. “I’m sorry, really. To put you through the trouble, and all. I really do appreciate it, Mr. Hallon.”
