Gourdi hummed angrily to herself as she made the trek from her hive to the outer edge of her vast lawnring. Her tiny feet stomped carelessly across the damp, sweet-smelling grass and the scent of midnight dew made the acids within her stomach swirl sickeningly. The purpleblood still couldn't quite handle the sugary diet of a true juggalo; and she often struggled to swallow down the teeth-rotting sweets so often prepared for their clowny soirees. She preferred the bitter taste of extra dark chocolate, and she often hid a fat bar of it within the pockets of her dress. She allowed herself to nibble on it from time to time, and when her stomach gave a great growl just as she was clambering over the fence in her escape from HoofDaddy, she decided that now was one of the perfect times to treat herself. As she landed on the other side of the wroughtiron fence that guarded her and her lusus' property, Gourdi immediately went to digging the chocolate bar from her dress. She tossed a hunk of it into her mouth and began to chew as she stowed the rest of it away into it's original hiding place.

With her mouth full of the chocolate's bittersweet taste and a pout on her face, Gourdi began walking once more. She used the moon's light as her guide; following the places where it broke through the trees and illuminated the plush ground beneath. The world around her was beautiful, in Four Fronds. The foliage was lush and the wind howled through the trees pleasantly. Though the cold hugged her like an unwanted friend, Gourdi felt comfortable within the environment around her. It was home, after all.

Slowly, though- as her journey continued forth into the night- the highblood approached the swamp. A smell she couldn't quite describe began to waft through the trees; which had become more gnarled and ugly than before. The ground beneath her feet became damp and spongey. Roots snaked across her path every once in a while, tripping her up and making her curse quite beautifully. A lusus lacking any noticeable limbs slithered its way across the path in front of her and Gourdi squeaked, jumping backwards and losing her balance when the heel of her foot came down heavily on something metal... and dangerous. The hunter's trap snapped around her ankle and she heard, very clearly, the sound of a fractured bone. The tangy smell of her own blood filled her nostrils and, without much warning, the tiny troll gave the biggest shriek she'd ever before managed. Surely, that would alert HoofDaddy's senses to her whereabouts? Gourdi began snivelling afterwards, dropping down so that she landed a**-first onto the wet swampy ground. She looked at the purple-stained gore that was her left ankle. Claw-shaped metal hooks had gouged her skin on either side, and the tiny thing had absolutely no ideas in her thinkpan about how she was going to get it out and get back home.

She gave a great sniff, completely miserable. She regretted storming out of her hive- angry at HoofDaddy for something she couldn't even remember in current state- and she wished she was there now. Instead, she was some place entirely different. Some place cold and painful and totally humid. Her hair frizzed out around her face unattractively, and her ankle throbbed in a constant and steady pain. She was wondering how long she could sit there before she passed out due to blood loss when a noise from behind caused a great terror to strike through the pitiful troll's heart. It was the unmistakeable noise of some wild and upset beast. Judging by the angry snorting and snuffling, Gourdi guessed it was some sort of hogbeast and she was suddenly and painfully aware that she was alone, without the protection of her lusus; and trapped by the tiny trap dug thoroughly into her ankle. Tears welled at the corner of her eyes and her sudden cry for assistance sounded more like an outright demand.

Keionx moved through the trees, alert for other movement that would signal success on her hunt. The outskirts of the Swamp, where forest met marsh, were excellent hunting grounds, and far enough away from civilization (or the 'civilization' that was the Outpost) to slake some of her wanderlust. It wasn't that Keionx's desire to move was insatiable, but that adventuring had been a comfort for so long in her emotional turmoil that, though there was considerably less turmoil for her these days, it was soothing. Like an old friend.

She carried a basket on her back, ready to hold any gathered or hunted goods for transport back to the Outpost, and was just kneeling by a berry bush to pluck it's late-fall offerings (not poisonous – her father had made sure she knew which plants were edible and which weren't, after all) when she heard it:

A scream.

Keionx stiffened, listening to the forest sounds as she stood restlessly, looking around her for some sort of clue. Keionx couldn't tell where the shriek had come from, or if it had come from a troll or a beast, but her every ounce of training called her to follow it and find it. It was very frustrating.

And then the cry for help came, and she knew where to go. She broke into a full run, leaping over downed tree trunks and dodging the traps of vines, roots, and mud with ease, propelled forward by a heady mixture of adrenaline and a sense of purpose.

Finally, spying the likely scene of the altercation, she leapt over a tree stump, grabbed a tree branch, and swung forth. She had only an instant to process the scene – a troll, trapped by a claw trap, clearly helpless and alone - and was feeling too heroically charged to think much further than that before she landed in the bog.

”Have no fear, friend,” she declared, ”Help is here!” moving for the trap. It would be a relatively simple matter to undo the trap – she'd come across (and set) claw traps before and she had her ways of opening them...

An angry snort, followed by an irritated bellow, made her stop. There's something else here! she thought, pumpbiscuit pounding in anticipation of a fight. She drew her sword and faced where the beast lurked.

~~~
The snoutbeast may or may not have been minding its business in the bushes. It also might have been hunting the smell of fresh blood, being omnivorous and all. Either way, the shouting had bothered it, and the sudden (and loud) appearance of the other troll only made it more annoyed. So the snoutbeast did what any angry wild snoutbeast would do – it charged.
Gourdi shrieked from her place huddled on the ground; back up against one of the monstrous roots that filled the swamp. Her pumpbiscuit hammered in her chest and she felt somewhat thankful for the appearance of another obviously older troll.
"DON'T MOVE TOWARDS ME! ATTACK IT!" She screamed. "HUNT THE ******** THING DOWN!"
The pain in her ankled had soared higher- at an almost unbearable rate. Her grey face had gone pale beneath her make up, and purple still seeped from the wound at her ankle. The orangeblood had told her to have no fear, but Gourdi was having a terrible time at ignoring the dire situation. She hoped this basket-toting swampgoer was more than a gatherer. Was she hiding some sort of weapon? Gourdi's vision swam as the purpleblood forced her lookstubs to turn in her direction, just as the foul beast that was the hog charged.
Gourdi shrieked in outrage. She watched the teen draw her sword and face the snoutbeast with a measured expression on her face. She waited to see what happened, her heart fluttering faintly in the chasm of her tiny rib cage.
"DESTROY THAT RAGING SOW!"
Destroy the beast that was plaguing this poor troll? Be someone's savior? OF ******** COURSE SHE WOULD. Keionx was already on it.
She dropped her sword, briefly, to duck and grab the beast by it's hindquarters, ignoring it's potentially deadly trotters as she proceeded to suplex it impressively. The throw landed it, squealing, onto it's back, and ended it's charge prematurely. Of course, the fight wasn't over yet. Keionx picked up her sword again as she turned to fight it properly.
It wasn't down, of course, for long. The throw had only enraged it more. As it came at her, she bashed it's tusked face away with her shield, dealing it a mighty slash on it's side that bled a greasy yellow. It attacked her again, trying to gore her with it's tusks, but it's attacks were too wild, too rage-borne. Keionx's attacks were much more precise. She slashed, she stabbed, she flourished, her moves flowing into each other with an easy confidence... She may or may not have been showing off. It had been so long since she'd had a proper audience, after all.
Finally, it reared up for one more full body charge and, as it barreled towards her, Keionx made her final move – she stabbed it, right through it's body, brought back her sword in a single movement (that perhaps could have been smoother), and rolled out of the way as it careened into a tree and fell, unmoving, amidst the shaken and falling leaves.
She smiled in satisfaction at her victory, gave her sword a flourish to rid it of clinging yellow blood, and sheathed it, managing to – unconciously, of course, – strike a heroic pose as she did so. ”There!” she said, turning and walking briskly back to the troll child, ”I hath slain the beast... and now for thee.” She kneeled next to them and started on the trap, working it open with equal parts brute force, tricks she had learned from her experience with traps, and actually finding the hidden mechanism that made it open. ”What be thy name, friend?”
"YES, YES! PIERCE IT WITH YOUR MIGHTY BLADE, O MIRTHFUL SWAMP GODDESS!" The pain had Gourdi feeling delirious and she watched the orangeblood dominate their snorting opponent swiftly, and with a seemingly practiced ease. Clearly, this teen had seen some combat. Or had at least trained for it. When her savior turned on her, Gourdi paled; her whole form shrinking back as she advanced. White hot pain seared through her limb as the swamp troll wrenched the tiny mechanism apart with force... then unlocked it. Clearly, she had a history with not only her blade- but traps, too.
If Gourdi were in a more stable state, she might inquire about the troll's obviously useful knowledge... but, in her current state, she could do no more than mumble. "G-Gourdi Jackyl.." The adrenaline from their prior encounter was wearing off quickly, and Gourdi felt suddenly very drained- and very tired. She slumped against a neighboring tree, lookstubs moving towards the purple that leaked steadily from the wound on her leg. She coughed pitifully, and looked at the other with tears welling in her eyes. "I need to find my daddy. Now. I need you to take me to him." She looked suddenly determined; but she was still drenched with sweat and wobbly- completely and hopelessly unable to stand on her own. "Take me to him n-now, ******** class="quote">
Keionx could have wondered about whether she should help the young juggalo. She could have wondered why a young child was out so far into the woods in the first place without their lusus (though she wouldn't have to wonder long - she herself had been adventurous enough as a child).
But it was not Keionx's place to wonder. Wondering opened the doors to unpleasant thoughts and ideas, ones that she did have to think about at times, yes.
But not now.
Instead of wondering, Keionx picked the troll up in her arms. "Point thee the way, young Jackyl! I shall take thee to him!" she declared.
Saving a troll out in the wilderness? Carrying them, heroically, back to home? This was pretty much making her day.
