As they travelled from town to town, Vodyanoi had taken to carrying around a little journal he had bought in Oba. It was a very plain little thing, and at first it was just a way to pass the time -- he’d write out the words to some of the songs he heard in the villages they visited, hoping to commit them to memory that way. But after a while, he really started enjoying it, and flipping back through the older songs was almost as pleasant as having heard them for the first time.
There was just one problem -- he was always misplacing his little book. It was just so small, and he had no good place to put it, especially in the chaos of the performance. The troupe shared most of their possessions, so the only way to keep something personal was usually to keep it on you. But how was he supposed to wear a book?
One day, he struck upon an idea. If he made himself a little vest with an inside pocket, he could keep the journal close by without hampering his movement. So, despite being a complete novice at tailoring, he found himself some scraps of cloth that seemed about big enough, bought a needle and thread, and set about to stitching something together. Except… he didn’t really know how to stitch. No matter how much he tried to keep the little lines neat and proper, they looked messy, spidery and loose. Several times he lost sight of the end of the thread altogether, and had to spend minutes just poking it in through the eye of the needle.
Gosh, was this ever frustrating!
By the time he was through, what he had looked nothing like a vest. It was absolutely unwearable! Too embarrassed to even show it to anyone, he quickly tossed it in a pile of trash. Maybe he should ask Eilin for sewing lessons?
