Every day since he had woken up on the island, Max had found a way to pass Diana's pod. Well, almost every day. He had slept for nineteen hours after first meeting his weapon and understandably hadn't made it back then, and a little under a week after that he'd found himself on the beach surrounded by rather insistent shadow creatures for the better part of a day. His mood had been so sour following that incident that he had huffed back to his room, punched his metal door, and refused to leave until hunger drew him out again. Today was rather uneventful by comparison, and that was why he was practically crowding her pod, antsy with boredom and itching to talk to her. Their conversations were always rather one sided, and he tried not to speak all that often when he visited in the first place, but when he did he refused to be ashamed. At least Caper was entertained by the whole thing. She was ever so curious about the sleeping human with the purple hair, and though she had coaxed a number of stories about their time in Delta from her hunter, as with everything else, she wanted more.

How're your legs? All this standing...

They're good.

You could ask that Lifey for a stool! He don't need it, look at him!

He's around the corner.

I know, but you saw him coming in! He doesn't need to sit. He should be patrolling to make sure none of the humans fall out!

Cape. Shh.

She did as she was told, but Max knew it was only a matter of time before she had something else to say. She wiggled at the back of his mind, straining like a guffaw at a funeral.

She remembered zombies, or something like them anyway. And prison. Surviving the apocalypse with her new family, working together with them in order to survive the hell they had been through and then....well then everything got a bit blurry. She remembered Delta, remembered the threat the strange creatures, but then her memory got fuzzy. She had accepted an offer from an organization, Dus X, Deus Ex? Whatever they were they'd said she could continue to help people there. They had needed her, at least she thought they had. Now she wasn't too sure.

She was cold, her limbs stiff and struggling to move as she pushed at...a glass door? Maybe some sort of sleeping chamber? Whatever it was it sure was heavy and took a bit of effort for her to push open even just a little bit. Maybe a side effect of her stiffness though.

"Hey, is anyone there?" she croaked out, her eyes still adjusting to the lighting. She saw a single figure in the room, but that wasn't exactly a reassuring thing. She could be dead, maybe she was being judged, or even worse back in prison. "Whatever I did, I promise it was for a good cause."

That would really go over well with them. She wondered where Max was more than anything. She had been with him before, then the blurriness and hunters, but after all of that she wasn't sure if he had escaped or not. No, she couldn't think that way. He had to have escaped.

He heard little of Diana's awakening, his back turned and thoughts temporarily occupied by yet another outburst from Caper.

No, I haven't ever had it on a pizza.

Why not?

I think it sounds kind of gross? I like cheese and sausage and stuff, and having a big old slab of sweetness in there is just—

MAX!

"Holyshitwhat?!"

He had a recently-acquired habit of twirling the silver ring that was Caper when he spoke to her, but during the pineapple-on-pizza discussion he had gotten a little more animated than usual and she had cleared the obstruction that was his body as Max had gesticulated. For a moment, she saw Diana behind him. The human was awake, she was moving, she was...

Look look look look! Turn around!

Max was afraid he might see something horrible when he faced her, but he needn't have worried. She looked tired and stiff, but beyond that it was as if nothing had changed. He hurried to her side, grinning happily.

"Getting knocked out and sleeping for three months? You did that for a good cause?"

He hovered nearby, hesitant to touch her in case she was jumpy or in some sort of pain, but clearly anxious to help. He wasn't all that different himself. A little less dirty, a little less stubbly. The coat was new though, so white it was almost blinding.

"Three months?" Diana yelped, toppling over into her pod both in shock and instability. She'd been asleep for three months. That was way too many. What had gone on while she was gone, more importantly where exactly was here? Bracing the side of her pod, she pushed herself up, bumping back into Max in the process. Wait...Max. Her brain was so scattered she hadn't bothered to put two and two together. Max was here. He was okay. He was wearing some sort of fancy white coat and looked much cleaner than what she was used to.

"Max, is it really you or am I just in some weird post pod delusional state?" she questioned, unsteady hand reaching out to pat his shoulder. He felt solid, looked solid. Maybe he was there after all.

"Also yes, if it means helping people of course it's for a good cause," she stuck her tongue out, slowly starting to regain her balance. She didn't feel like jello as much now, a plus side to all of it. She was amazed it had been three whole months since the incident. Three whole months since their world had been turned upside down.

"Three months." He easily recalled his own disappointed shock at learning he'd been unconscious for weeks, but the feeling couldn't compare to his current relief. Diana was awake and he was no longer alone. "It's not so long in the grand scheme of things. And I'm really here, I promise." He briefly touched her hand where it pat at his shoulder.

"We're on the hunters' island. We are hunters. And we're supposed to be helping people, so it's good you still want to." He was very new himself, so any real evidence of this service they were meant to provide had yet to show itself, but they were alive and things weren't Green. He thought the tradeoff was worth an unnaturally lengthy nap, at least for now.

hey. heeeeeeeey.

Caper's nudge popped a hole in the giddy bubble clouding his mind, reminding him that there were things that needed to be done before they could stand around and reminisce. The hoga wanted to be included, but Max was pretty sure introducing Diana to a ring would only confuse her further right now. It would be better if she saw for herself.

"So... Since you're awake, it means there's a weapon waiting for you. It's what woke you up." His smile had dimmed but hadn't gone out, and he watched her attentively to make sure her legs would continue holding her up.

"A weapon? What sort of weapon? Do you have one?" Diana questioned, looking over him to spot this mysterious weapon. She saw none, so maybe he didn't have it with him. Or maybe it was hiding. She guessed she should be thankful though all things considered. If her own weapon had been the one deciding on whether to wake her up or not she would be grateful it even did wake her at all. She could've potentially been stuck asleep for much longer if not for it.

"Of course I want to help people. It's only right that I do after everything." She was pleased that they were both alive and awake. No bad Green around. No zombie like things. They were safe for the moment, though she really hoped it wasn't just the two of them. She wanted to ask him so many things. How long he'd been awake, who else was here, but that would probably have to wait until after she settled in.

"So I should probably get this weapon, huh?"

He hadn't had much of an opportunity to see anyone else's weapon, but if each one had once been a Halloween creature, he assumed they were as varied as humans were. Max debated continuing to keep their odd nature a secret, but if he didn't give her a hint of what was to come at the very least, he had a feeling she might be a little annoyed.

"I do have one, and she's here with me. From what I can tell they're all different, but one thing they have in common is that they all talk... so there's that. They talk in your head. It's how you know which one to pick." He winced a bit, then shrugged it off. "I'm not crazy, I swear." He held out his hand for her to take if she chose. "I'll show you where?"

Remarkably, Caper stayed silent, watching the proceedings from Max's thumb. The strip of changing color around her band was an interesting yellow-green, at least until he raised his hand and she turned a rather alarming shade of orange.

Diana accepted his outstretched hand, glad to have him there to explain everything to her. It was a lot to take in, especially in such a short amount of time. If she hadn't already dealt with undying and the end of the world she might have been a bit more disturbed. Though the whole voice of a creature in her head from now on would be interesting. She hoped her weapon was pleasant at least.

"I guess we should get this show on the road then. Especially since I'm still in my prison get up," she chuckled, looking over her torn uniform. She'd be happy to change out of them and back into something normal. "So your weapon, it's around now? I hope it isn't saying anything too bad about me."

Max nodded, guiding Diana out of the room just as the on-duty Life hunter ventured around the corner. With any luck, the man would be able to figure out what had happened here and file the proper paperwork or whatever.

"She's not saying anything at all, which is a first," he replied, poking at Caper a bit in his mind.

?

Watching.

He smirked. "She doesn't mind your clothes or anything else." Despite having told her about his life before the island when he'd lived and fought for Apple Minimum Security, Max didn't think Caper really understood the implications of being locked in a human prison. "I get wanting to change though. I felt pretty gross when I woke up. My shoes and socks were gone and I just... bleh. But you'll get your room soon. And I haven't been off island yet, but I've found enough to wear around here for now."

Even though he tried to advance as slowly as he could, the cove wasn't all that far from the pod room. They arrived soon after, and as Max peered down the stairs, he wished they had more time. When he saw her again, they would both have duties. Life would be dangerous. Diana would be Diana, poised to make friends and flourish, and he would still be... Max.

"It's down there," he said, loosening his grip on her hand.

"I...I guess I should go down there and get my weapon then. I'll do that and be back in no time. Then we can catch up. Maybe explore a bit," she nodded, squeezing his hand before releasing it completely. She was terrified to fail, but there was no failure really. She woke up because she was going to find her weapon, now she just had to go down and get it.

"Soon we'll both be able to protect people!"
