Horace set his cell phone down, mission accomplished. He loved sparring with any and everyone. Although, it was a shame that Micah was new and therefore only a trainee, Horace liked bothering him, so Micah it was. He hummed thoughtfully for a moment. He still needed to get that garland up and resolved to do so sometime this weekend, preferably when his victims were not in their room. However, finding out everyone's schedules would involve far too much creepery. He would have to rely on luck. For now, he had a spar to get to. There was only one drawback - it meant he had to put on real pants.

Real pants acquired, Horace headed down to the moon's room. He rapped smartly on the door and waited patiently.

Micah tugged at the scarf and resettled it, frowning a little. It was still weird to be wearing the thing constantly, even if it was light enough that it didn't make him too hot; it was December, yeah, but the weather here was not winter to his mind. If you could wear shorts without getting your leg hair frosty it was not real winter.

Humans so much hair, so much animal. Nova made a rude noise. Should cut you face hair. Too rough.

"I like my beard," Micah grumbled. Then he jumped at the rap on the door, even though he'd been expecting it. He stalked over to open the door, looked at Horace, nodded, and emerged into the hall, shutting the door behind him. "So we're gonna fight," he said, the end of the sentence turning up just slightly.

Horace had tried to peer into Micah's room, just because, although he tried to be subtle about it because it was rude. But he was intensely curious for various reasons. He didn't even know half of the reasons, but they were there.

"Yep, unless you have a better suggestion?" There was just enough of a suggestive lilt to Horace's voice to be noticeable, but not enough to be lewd. He hoped. "You're looking scruffy."

Micah's room wasn't tidy, as such, but it wasn't a disaster either. His bed was unmade but with its covers pulled up haphazardly, and a few articles of clothing sat in a laundry basket in the corner beside the dresser. A few magazines lay on top of the dresser, and a plastic shower bucket with generic shampoo and soap sat next to the nightstand. The room seemed fairly impersonal, even if it was clearly lived in.

"Oh my god you too?" Micah complained, and headed for the stairs, his footsteps just barely not qualifying as stomping.

Horace made a thoughtful noise. He wasn't sure what he'd expected, really, from a glimpse into Micah's room. He almost commented on the lack of decoration when Micah grumbled at him.

"Me too, what?" he questioned, following the heavy-footed man up the stairs. Luckily, what Horace lacked in speed, he made up for in long-legged strides, catching up to Micah.

"Nova was just complaining about the beard, she thinks I should shave." Micah grimaced. "Cut you face hair, too rough," he mimicked in a falsetto, then dropped back to his usual tones. "It'll be fine in a few days, you can both shut up."

He rolled his neck, making a cracking sound, as they reached the top of the stairs and turned towards the outer doors. "It'll be nice to move around, I guess, I wasn't doing anything and I got like an hour till I'm scheduled."

"Ah," he said. And, after a moment. "Well, I don't think you should shave. I can't grow a beard at all. Or anything - it's unfair." Horace huffed. The urge was there to just be an annoyance and reach over and rub at Micah's scruff, but even Horace couldn't violate such a personal space boundary without asking. Well, most of the time. Luckily, the distance between the dorms an the training field was short - the day was, of course, balmy. Horace kind of missed snow.

He eyed Micah. The trainee looked sturdily built and he figured that as time passed, Micah would just be a ball of muscle. Though, it kind of looked like he was on his way already. It was hard to tell under clothing.

"Have you sparred before?" Micah wore his scarf and everything. Horace on the other hand, never wore those unless on official duty. They were garish and fussy, a liability.

Micah looked Horace over. "You do look kinda young," he said, blandly.

He shook his head in response to the question, tensing a little. "Practiced on the dummies," he said, his words sharply bitten off, "but not real people." He hesitated, shifting from one foot to the other. "I mean, I seen people sparring but I don't quite - how the hell does it not cut people open?"

"The dummies," he gestured to them. "I named them. But fighting a person is just better, ya know? Your shield - made by your Nova - protects you up to a certain point. You may bruise and bleed, but you won't die. After that point, it pops. Then you can die, just not here." He continued walking towards the middle of the field as he spoke. "The field has wards that mean you can't really die on the field." He looked ready to fight to fight and began to stretch a little.

Until he realized what Micah had said earlier. "Wait... Young? Just how young do you think I am?" He sounded slightly offended. ...more than slightly. Horace was a full eighteen, for goodness' sake. He frowned down at Micah.

"You named them? All of them?" Micah laced his fingers together and turned his palms outward, stretching his arms and hands and causing another series of popping noises. "You can't die here, huh." Shield? he asked Nova.

Not let you die, be stupid if you die. I no sleep, done sleeping, if you die I sleep again. Keep you alive. Can have bruises, she laughed. Bruises teach you no be stupid. But not die.

"I don't know, like, twelve," he answered, his tone just as blandly calm as it had been before.

"Of course I named them all," he huffed out. "You really do wanna fight, huh? I'm eighteen, granddad." Micah was yanking his chain, Horace knew this. But still, it was a tiny bit of a sore spot. ...he'd just have to trounce Micah soundly.

"Go ahead and summon, then. You get first shot. Age before beauty." Horace grinned cheekily and summoned Dr. Jannisari, the mass of bone-like fragments and tendons crawling up his arms. Her weight was familiar to him, solid.

A remarkably cheerful grin bloomed suddenly on Micah's usually rather sour expression. "Barely drinking age, huh?" he replied. Horace had yanked his chain a few times, and he felt like getting a little of his own back.

He stared with interest at the strange, angular, organic-looking weapon as it manifested, then breathed deeply and made the sort of internal pulling motion that he'd learned brought Nova into her weapon shape. The delicate bracelet blurred, seemed almost to unfold into Micah's hand, the lash uncoiling into a long, vinelike whip studded with leafy blades.

Use me, Nova demanded eagerly. They were here to fight, Micah figured; he drew his arm back and snapped the whip forward toward Horace, feeling weird and clumsy.

"Ah, rude! I've been drinking forever, now." He watched with keen interest as Nova appeared, the length of her looking somehow cool to the touch. Like green forest, he thought, and suppressed a brief shudder. Then Micah was slinging it forward, the small blades almost whistling through the air. Horace imagined it would have hurt if he didn't have a shield - even with it, he felt the small pings of the blades against him.

He let out a low whistle. "Kinky." He rushed forward, feet avoiding stepping on Nova. He didn't know if her little blade would point up and try to stab him through the thin soles of his shoes or not. Also, it seemed very rude. He could use the time it would take Micah to recover to get in a hit, he thought. It might not have been sportsmanlike to use a man's inexperience against him, but Horace shrugged that off, too busy driving his fist in towards Micah's stomach to care.

"Do it again."

Legal drinking age," and Micah sounded almost prim, but there was a slight glint in his eye.

The punch did catch him off guard as he tried to figure out how to recover from the attack; that was the part he had the most difficulty with, getting any control over the flexible lash when he wasn't swinging her forward. His breath whooshed out and he stumbled back, coughing once. Nova crooned at the teasing. Like this one!

"Oh my god," Micah muttered as he got his breath back, and yanked Nova's lash back and up, barely missing his own leg as her blades turned and shone in the light with the motion. He struck out again, and felt Nova's purring pleasure at the hit as much as he heard it. "Creepy, both of you."

"Age ain't nothin' be a number, granddad." He hissed in surprise as that sharp whip lashed out at him again. Horace had a suspicion that he and Nova might get along. Either that or they'd absolutely hate each other.

"Whatever, you like it, Micah." He grinned and, instead of punching, decided to duck down and drive his shoulder into Micah's chest. Up close and personal was his favorite kind of fighting.
