Class Activity
Primary Assignment Open: 4/01/17 Close: 4/30/17, 11;59PM EST
"Hello, class," Tamandani said in her usual soft lilt. "I hope you've all had a wonderful day so far. If you haven't, today's lesson ought to be relaxing for you." As she spoke, she set out a tall container of hot water kept warm by crystals and several different kinds of teas, each with its own label explaining the flavor and general uses. Each seat in the classroom was already equipped with small cups and saucers and a sheet of paper listing symbols one might see in their leaves. "We'll be beginning with tasseography, or divining with tea leaves." She gestured for the students to come choose their teas while she spoke. "Now tasseography is not just about drinking tea, though that can be a very enjoyable part of it. While your tea steeps, you should be working on clearing your mind."
As the class settled back down in their seats, Tamandani took the chance to choose her own tea and sat back in her chair. "When your tea is cool enough to sip, use your non-dominant hand to pick it up. Try to think of nothing in particular. If you are successful you'll get a general reading. If something keeps popping up in your mind, focus on that in particular to get a more specific reading." She sipped at her tea as she spoke, sighing quietly and emptying her mind. "Leave a small bit of tea in the bottom. Swirl it around your cup three times and turn it over, dumping it in your saucer and leaving your cup upside down for three breaths. Pick your cup up, and then you are ready to begin reading your leaves."

Secondary Assignment (You must complete the first assignment and be quoted with a passing grade to do this assignment, but it will count as a second passing grade) Open: 4/01/17 Close: 4/30/17, 11;59PM EST
"Free for all day!" she declared with a smile. "Choose any topic that interests you in divination and write me a short essay about it."
Instructions 1. Choose any divination topic in one of these lists [1][2][3] and have your student write a short essay (no more than 250 words) on it. 2. Post your student's assignment here~
Finally, Divination had opened up registration, so he could begin his studies and hopefully graduate sooner rather than later. Starlet sat and listened attentively as he teacher spoke, usual soul-piercing stare in place as he memorized everything she had to say. Once she was done, he went about the activity as instructed, clearing his mind as best as he could, and then carefully examined the results...
Fork - get advice from trusted friends before deciding. Forked line - a decision to be made. Boat - worthwhile journey; your ship is coming in. Rake - you are at a crossroad and your destiny is determined by hard work. Palm tree - wealth; beach vacation.
After looking over the results, he furrowed his brows as he thought... Was there something he needed to decide on? Well-- there was a lot, actually. Especially with Aphelion in his life, now... But he had been considering a second stone... Clearly he should consult someone about it, first. With a sigh, he pulled out a paper to write down his thoughts on the exercise.
I find Tasseography to be interesting so far. My particular interest is in astrology, but judging from my results today it seems that tea leaves are quite accurate. I will be experimenting further with this method in the future. It is quite simple and easy to manage, it will be interesting to see whether or not the accuracy continues with further attempts at readings.
There. That should do it. He signed his name at the top, and then got up to pass it in to the professor before leaving.
Dmitri entered the classroom wordlessly, his eyes scanning about the room as soon as he did and taking in the environment. Divination was not something he expected to excel at, or even be especially good at, but the subject was available and sounded interesting enough as a side course to his primary purpose at university: graduation with a major in music. In the in between, some magic study seemed appropriate, and from soothing, winding scents to the overall air of tranquility in the room, he suspected he wouldn’t regret his choice.
When he sat and after glancing to the cups at his desk, he turned his attention forward to the instructor. Tasseography. Well, Dmi thought with another glance to his cup, at least, if nothing else, he would start the morning off with fresh tea. He shut his eyes, drawing a breath and attempting for a moment to, as instructed, ‘clear his mind.’
It sounded simple.
As such things tended to go, however, one tended not to realize how much they had going on in their mind until attempting to wipe the slate clean. Eventually, though, after dusting away thoughts of his parents, concerns over the relationship with a particular friend back home, all of his upcoming classes, and where he would be going from here, Dmitri managed to attain a reasonably blank mental space.
He reached for his mug as instructed. Warmth from the smooth ceramic climbed his fingertips, and he left his eyes shut for a moment before beginning to sip. He couldn’t help, then, but glance around the room, observing the myriad faces and reactions: eagerness, confusion, boredom, interest, curiosity, and absent-minded whimsical looks alike filled the different desks. Shaking his head and suppressing the twitch of a smile at the corner of his lip, Dmitri finished his tea, and turned his cup as instructed.
After three breaths and a lifting away of the cup, the results were…wet.
It looked, frankly, like a mess to him, and Dmi wasn’t sure what he expected but—well, no harm in at least trying to see what the ‘shapes’ might be interpreted as. If one was so very determined to find shapes in wet, stewed leaves. He scanned the chart at his desk, listing off potential shapes and meanings. A certain, vaguely rectangular broken piece might be understood as a flag, he supposed after a while. Which meant…
Danger. ‘Look to nearby symbols for added meaning.’ Magnificent.
Dmi squinted at his leaves. Could this fragment of a triangular piece be seen as an…arrow? Possibly. A glance to his chart, though, said that direction was important, and he decided it looked to be pointing slightly upwards to the right? If that was considered the point, but then again. If one of the other points on the triangle was interpreted as dominating the meaning, then it was pointing—leftward? Or down.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, and tilted his head. There, in the center. That flake looked fairly recognizably like a star. Success, recognition, and praise. He couldn’t argue with the positiveness of that, but in combination with the rest, he couldn’t help but wonder if he was stretching his interpretation or not. After a long moment and a bit more study, he resigned himself to picking up a pen and transcribing, best he could, a summary of his thoughts from the experience.
Professor Tamandani,
While I have never been especially talented with magic personally, the art of divination, when combined with the question of whether the fates can even be predicted to begin with, has always been an intriguing subject to me. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the lesson from the beginning, which I suppose was only helped by the fact that I am a tea drinker myself, and on that front I cannot complain. I found the exercise to be relaxing, and helpful for taking my mind off the minutiae of life and other classes for a time.
I cannot be sure I took away any divine insight into my future from the lesson, and if I have, I can’t say I feel confident that I uncovered it properly. Needless to say, whatever my future holds, I suspect I will be just as surprised by it as I would have without the lesson, but on the positive side, it has given me some things to think about. I have never attempted anything similar in the past, and I found it an interesting glimpse into a new method of applying magic and our more common resources—such as tea.
I enjoyed the class.
Sincerely, Dmitri Azarov
After re-reading his sheet one last time, Dmi rose quietly so as not to disturb those still at work, and approached the front to turn in his paper.
Endzela wouldn't tolerate herself being late today. She was just so looking forward to getting into the lessons divination had in store, especially with how long registration had been on hold for the class. She settled comfortably into her seat as Tamandani began explain what the exercise for the day was. It sounded highly intriguing, though she worried about being able to fully clear her mind. Still, she'd try to do her best. Endzela proceeded to carry out the instructions as given. While her tea cooled, she took several deep breaths to help calm her thoughts, though she nearly forgot to used her non-dominant hand when she drank.
When only a small amount of tea was in her cup, she flipped it over into the saucer. Hmm. What did the leaves have to say?
Coin - a lump sum of money is coming your way. Comet - brink of pivotal change or dramatic event in your life. Cushions or pillows - comfort; admonition against laziness and procrastination. Daisy - new love.
After looking over her findings and the informational cheat sheet provided, she drew out her pen and paper to write her thoughts on her findings. It seemed to be pretty spot on, though the signs of the comet and the daisy both piqued her interest and mildly alarmed her. She wasn't going to lie. Ende did blush at the sign for new love. At present, she was very single and was more or less married to her studies. The Comet of pivotal change? Could that be tied into that as well? Would a romance drastically change her world view?
'I've done some reading on this subject and tasseography has always piqued my interest, so I was pretty excited to give it a go with proper guidance. As far as my results are concerned, they seem to be pretty spot on for the things that I am involved in, though the things that were hinted at both excite and kind of make me nervous. Certainly not in a bad way, but it's something to keep an eye out for in my day to day. I really do look forward to learning more of what this class has to teach me.
~Endzela'
With that, she gathered up her things, turned in her work to the professor, and headed out.
Fig was so excited to get started on the first half of his double major. He felt fortunate that divination classes had opened up around the same time travel restrictions had been lessened significantly. The fey shuffled into class with an excited smile and a little nod and wave to the teacher as he entered. Folding his wing upon his back, he took a seat and listened to the instructions given by the professor. The tea he selected smelled wonderfully and the color was very pretty. Clearing his head was pretty easy, since he practiced meditation most mornings.
Well, time to tip his cup. Fig swirled the dregs around his cup before carefully flipping it upside down upon his saucer. Taking a few deep breaths, he flipped the cup upright and took a moment to skim the list as he processed the tea leaves. A small handful of shapes became clear to him, whereupon the fey listed them on a sheet of paper both for his own reference and to turn in. '7 ) Bed - sleep on it before establishing a close love or business relationship 10 ) Boat - worthwhile journey; your ship is coming in. 14 ) Bow - fortunate symbol meaning gift or celebration of achievement. 58 ) Hare - unlike the shorter eared rabbit, the long eared hare represents something important brewing in your destiny in love or travel 63 ) Hourglass - a warning to be punctual.'
To be perfectly honest, the things he saw got him all happy and excited. Reading the meaning of the boat, Fig looked around the classroom. Here he was, a daydream attending university in Below. A shiver raced down his spine. A worthwhile journey indeed, and it was only just beginning. Pretty much everything save the hourglass had him all a'twitter. Something important brewing in his destiny regarding love or travel? A symbol meaning a gift or celebration of achievement? Yes please! There was little better than a good celebration. Tying into the hare, the bed symbol seemed pertinent and wise. Love and business were serious matters, which were best not rushed into. So, that was reasonable. As for the hourglass, that was something to keep in mind just in case.
'Professor Tamandani,
My tasseography results today are very encouraging, and I dare say some put me in mind of my present good fortune. I look forward to learning more, continuing to practice to see when and how my results might change as a go about my way. I plan on keeping an eye out for the things that were hinted in my tea leaves. I found your class very enjoyable and will eagerly await further lessons down the line.
Respectfully, Fig '
He took a few moments to double check his results before deciding everything appeared to be in order. Rising, he brought his paper to the professor before excusing himself from the classroom, taking careful pains to not brush against or bump anyone who may still be working.
Joseth was excited about his tea readings, enjoying his first cup of tea in a long time. He let the hot liquid warm him from the inside out, trying to clear his mind as he took his final sip. One thought kept bubbling back into his mind, about Burvia and their little family. He was unsure of where to go with it next, so he hoped he might get some answers with this reading. He set his cup down over his saucer, waited three calming breaths, then removed it to find his tea leaves ready to be read. He flipped open his notes and noticed several prominent markings amid the dregs:
Dagger - caution against sharp words or revealing personal information Kettle - a special visitor is coming, probably not romantic. Tornado or whirlwind - prepare for turbulent weather. Cup - be patient, this is not a time to assert yourself. Butterfly - overdue happiness.
The more he thought about the symbols, the more Joseth got excited. This was the perfect insight for his situation! He had been debating wether or not to take his adopted daughter Joselyn to Snowgarden as a little Father-Daughter trip, which made sense from the tornado symol's "turbulent weather". The dagger warned him to be careful with his words to her, hoping that the trip went smoothly. The cup was a bit harder to read, but he figured it meant he should wait and let the discussion he needed to have with Burvia play out on its own without rushing into anything. The kettle and butterfly were the most exciting symbols to him, foreshadowing something he had been hoping for for a long time. Overjoyed, Joseth scribbled down his write-up and gave it to his teacher. It read:
'Professor, today's lesson on tasseography was both calming and incredibly insightful. I found that it requires a certain level of grounding oneself and focus, and interpreting the symbols might take a little work, but I was able to interpret and meditate on the symbols that were exposed to me. I hope to find myself turning to this medium of divination more often.'
Chessy fidgeted in her seat, struggling to concentrate. She was not one that particularly enjoyed schooling - anything that required her to be still tested her patience. And while she enjoyed divination - it was, afterall, one of her majors - being confined to a seat was just... frustrating. Resting her chin on her hand, she stared at Professor Tamandani, attempting to pay attention so that the words would seep in. Of course, it seemed the professor was having the same problem; seeing the professor jump from topic to topic, it comforted her to know that she was not the only one that could not focus.
She did groan ever so quietly under her breath, however, at hearing the assignment. "Greeeeat," she mumbled, pulling out her textbook and paroozing through the pages, skimming the contents before landing on a divination she had been recently studying: Pessomancy. Titling her paper with her name and with the name of the divination, she looked back at the textbook and skimmed it to review what pessomancy was about. Nibbling on the end of her pen, she stared at her paper, debating how to start.
'I've recently bee'
She striked it out and huffed, tapping her pen on the corner of the page. Why was writing so difficult? She glanced around to see how her classmates were fairing; most were scribbling away, and she could see a couple students had already finished, handed their paper, and left. Great, great, great. Looking back at the textbook and the paper and restarted it.
'Divination is a complex practice in a sense. It involves trying to predict what has yet to happen - to predict the future. Throughout its creation, there have been a multitude of branches of it, such as ' - she ferociously flipped through the pages, looking for types of divination to list - 'chronomancy, abacomancy, muscle reading, water scrying... These four only scratch the surface, as there are many, many more. One type of divination that has recently caught my interest is pessomancy, a type of divination that relies on using beans, pebbles, stones, or a similar type of object. A major characteristic is that the objects should preferably be a similar size and smooth. Symbols are inscribed onto the object and they should relate to your future life, such as your health, lovelife, traveling, or future sucess to name a few. They're placed in a bag and shaken until they're mixed and then thrown out, after which they are interpretted.
While I've recently discovered this divination type, I've come to extremely enjoy it - I've been dabbling in it a little and was considering asking some classmates from different classes if they would like me to examine their future through it. I prefer it to other types of divinations because I feel as though it's less situational than other divinations - it does not require someting such as entrails of a young nightmare or daydream like anthropomancy. It uses materials that are easily obtained. Overall, I just find it more interesting to interpret than others and one of my new favorite forms of divination. While this type of divination is a very interesting and widely used divination, it is only one of many.'
She stared. Was there anything she should add in...? She nibbled on her pen and skimmed the textbook once more. She felt like she covered it all. Or at least hoped she did, because the more she stared at it, the more her head started to ache. Guess that meant it was time to turn it in and hope it was acceptable. Grabbing her messenger bag, she slung it over her shoulder and handed the paper to the professor, nervously pushing her glasses up and nodding her head before shuffling out the classroom nervously.

This seemed simple enough... Though decided he should work with two types of divination that he wasn't intending to go practice, just to broaden his horizons. After scanning the textbook, Starlet picked out two disciplines and then began writing down basic descriptions along with what he thought of them.
Aeromancy Aeromancy is, compared to a lot of other disciplines, a relatively new form of divination. Aeromancy depends on atmospheric conditions, including clouds, wind currents, thunder, lightning, comets and even shooting stars. I picked this discipline because it ties somewhat into my own interest in astrology. I think it would be a somewhat difficult discipline to work with, considering our advancements in meteorology and astronomy. Weather patterns can now be predicted more accurately with machinery. I would have liked if there had been a more detailed description of what aeromancy is used for.
Alphitomancy Alphitomancy is primarily used to determine innocence or guilt in those accused. The accused is given barley cake or bread, and those who become sick are deemed guilty. I do not think this is a particularly good practice, as some people simply have stronger stomachs than other. Also, some are simply allergic to the cake/bread, but I do not think that having an allergy automatically makes a person guilty. This is not a practice of divination that I would endorse, I am happy that we do not use it anymore.
Satisfied, he signed his name at the top, and then stood to go pass his paper in to the teacher.

You passed! I will work on getting a new assignment up tomorrow <3
Joseth cracked open his divination tome and flipped through the pages until he came across aeromancy and pessomancy. He scanned the passages and answered the assigned questions about the reading. He let his ink dry for a minute before handing it in and returning to his desk to dive back into his tome, turning back to the flagged divination section.

You passed! (Sorry, I suck >.> ) There's two new assignments up now :3
Joseth went to class and listened to the professor's brief instructions, a a line appearing between his furrowed brows. He did not own a cat, which would make this assignment tricky. Wanting to stay true to his craft, however, he decided to make a couple trips to the local shelter. That way, he could observe the cats without having to bug Burvia about her pets. He took his notebook and recorded notes on each visit he made.
'- Monday morning: Black and white cat named Pepper curled up with her forehead resting on the floor, indicating foul weather moving in. Grey cat named Siloh followed me around the cat area, indicating good luck and money coming my way.'
'- Tuesday afternoon: Weather cloudy, slightly proving Pepper's behavior from yesterday. Found a couple silver crescents on the ground, proving Siloh's behavior. Several cats washing their ears and face, indicating oncoming rain.'
'-Wednesday afternoon: Sprinkled this morning before class, proving yesterday's prediction. White cat named Talia groomed herself, wrapping her paw around her left ear, indicating a lady will soon be visiting.'
'- Thursday afternoon: Rained most of the morning. Burvia visited to bring some soup to my dorm, proving Talia's behavior true.
Friday Joseth turned in his notes, concluding his notes with the shelter being closed Thursday.
