Soft holiday music wafted in through the stable/house where Tough and his family lived. It felt nice in there, warm and cozy. There was the smell of gingerbread, baking or having been baked, and the crisp pungent smell of pine needles from the tree. Soon they would be putting ornaments up and hanging up more decorations. Christmas, was by far, his favorite season yet. It was the first time he'd experienced it, and it was really exciting! For a young phony, the world (or park in this case) was always filled with new surprises.

Someone had mentioned Christmas cards, and after some exploration in books and on the computer, Tough learned that yes, indeed there was a tradition of buying or making cards and giving them to others, especially family. It showed you cared. Handmade cards were considered terrific, and would be very sentimental. Well, it wasn't like a young foal like Tough had any better things to do that day. He had raided the craft supplies and set them on a table, his magic controlling the scissors and pens and glue that would be used.

He'd told his siblings, of course, what he was planning on doing and invited them to join. They could make cards for everyone! It sounded like a good time, but who knew who would show up. After all, phonies could be busy sometimes, even the young ones. Tough was just.. Not always a popular kid.

I hope this works!

Wildflour was not all that enamoured with the idea of Christmas yet. It seemed to be a festival of greed masquerading as a holiday of charity and the idea of some large man in red watching his every deed was disturbing. The mere fact that whole generations of adults felt the need to lie to their children about where presents came from and for said children to continue the tradition seemed like one of the biggest forms of the corruption in the world.

However he liked his siblings and surely a card telling them that wouldn’t hurt… and he wasn’t going to be getting the new iPhone if he couldn’t at least pretend he was getting into the ‘spirit’ of things.

So Wildlfour strolled through the door and cast a discerning eye upon his brothers craft supplies. "We’re using ethically sourced sustainable paper, aren’t we?" He asked.

Tough blinked at Wildflour, confused by the words he had used. Were they English? He wasn't sure, actually. "Ethically... sourced... Sustainable... Paper." Breaking it down made some sense. Sustainable Paper, maybe paper that could be used multiple times? "What does Ethically sourced mean? It was in the craft room, a big pile of construction paper. Not sure where it came from, Ma probably bought it."

Ruriska
omg he's great XD

Wildflour rolled his eyes and took a seat at the table. "Then it’s probably not and I don’t know why I bother with this family." He grabbed a piece of paper, holding it up and scrutinizing it through narrowed eyes. "By ethically sourced I mean recycled or from proper farms, not a by-product from the murder of entire forests." He sighed heavily. "Never mind, hand me those pens. If a tree died for this I can at least make my sisters happy with it."

"You're weird sometimes," Tough muttered, but did as he was asked. Not the by-product of a murdered forest? Where did Wildflour come up with this nonsense? "You do realize you live in a place made mostly of a murdered forest, right?"

Eh, was it worth a fight? Probably not. Tough decide to switch topics.

"Funny, I thought you didn't know why you were bothering with this family," (wait wouldn't this also cause a fight?!) Tough remarked as he folded a piece of blue construction paper in half, "But here you are making a card for your sisters..." What about him?! Jeesh, rude much.

“Oh I’m sorry, I don’t recall being given an option about where I live and that it seems my caring about the environment is weird,” Wildflour retorted as he rather aggressively uncapped the pen and started drawing.

If it was a fight Tough wanted, it would not be hard to set Wildflour off. “As much as your ignorance, despite my attempts at educating you all, frustrates me, we still have familial bond and I do like to make my sisters happy. You were the one that invited me to join you, so maybe you should just make your own cards and be quiet.”

Then he turned in his seat, to give his shoulder to his brother and continued to work.

"Yes, I wanted to spend time together, but you're acting like I'm some heathen and acting so high and mighty and better than everyone!" Tough grabbed a glue pen and uncapped it in a huff, smearing paste across the front of the card before stamping down a cut out heart.

"And why do only our sisters get a card? Why not me too?" Wildflour was so exasperating! Not that Tough was any better, but he hardly recognized his own flaws.

Wildflour spun back around to face his brother. “Don’t be ridiculous!” He brandished his pen at his brother and lifted his nose in the air with all the grand ‘I know better than you’ he could muster because let’s be honest, he was better than the rest of his family. They just didn’t understand.

“You’re such a baby. Who makes a card for someone right in front of them? It would ruin the surprise entirely and now I’m not even going to bother making you one at all.”

"I'm not being a baby! I'm asking a question. Why are you being such a stuck up brat?" Why was wildflour so... so... WILDFLOUR.

Huffing, Tough turned and focused on making his cards. Just ignore him, tough.. Just ignore him and his stupid attitude and stupid cards. Now the question was, did he make one for Wildflour? Or would the other phony just bemoan and complain that the card had been made out of non-ethically sourced resources and go on about how awful everything was.

Wildflour was going to take the high-ground. He was going to let Tough’s comments wash over him like the nothing they were and keep on making these cards for his sisters despite knowing they’d once been majestic trees brutally cut down and-

"You know what?!" Wildflour slammed a hoof down, sending pens flying off the table. "It’s the ignorant people like you that are destroying our planet. Even when it’s explained or put right in your face, you don’t listen, you don’t care. You think I’m a brat for giving a damn about how we treat the earth, well, I think you’re a brat who only cares about whether he’s going to get a card or not."

He took a deep breath. "So no, you are definitely not getting a card and I hope you have fun in your own ignorant little world while I continue to wonder whether future generations will have an ozone layer."

Ding Ding Ding. Somewhere in another plane of existence a round bell had gone off. Tough's temper flared, his teeth gritting as a flush of annoyance and embarrassment crept up his cheeks.

"I'm only ignorant because instead of talking to me, you talk down to me! You think you're so better than everyone because you worry all the time. It's not.. It's not fun being around you, Wildflour! It's like..." Tough waved his hooves around, "Like I have to prove constantly I'm not some barbarian. All I wanted to do was make cards and you're acting like I'm dropping atomic bombs on burning orphanages!"

Once more Tough was ignorant to his own pestering ways.

It did sting to get told he wouldn't get a card. Stung enough that, without thinking, Tough dumped glittered onto his brother. He sat, shocked at what his magic had done. "U-Uh..." Uhoh.

Ruriska
YOU BEEN GLITTER BOMBED -explosion sounds-
PostPosted: Thu Jan 14, 2016 5:31 pm

The glitter exploded everywhere. It was in his hair, in his eyes, on his face. Wildflour blinked the sudden need to cry and was embarrassed. He hated that their argument had gotten this far but he wouldn’t let it get to him. There would also be people against his message, against him and if one of them was going to be his brother, then so be it.

"Maybe you should stop trying because you clearly are a barbarian," he retorted, abandoning his half made cards. "And we shouldn’t talk to each other anymore. Clearly other than our blood, we have no connection and I’d hate to be around to ruin all your fun."

He took in a deep breath and turned around to march out of the room. "Goodbye."

Regret and shock. Oh no. This hadn't gone as planned at all and now Tough had done something horrible to hurt Wildflour. Shamefully, he felt tears p***k at his eyes.

"W-wildflour! No! Wait!" He couldn't help the panic and worry that laced in his voice. Tumbling off his chair, he trotted after his brother, "Wildflour I... I'm so sorry I... I didn't mean to... I...

"Don't leave. Ma will be angry and I want to have fun with you! I do. You're my brother," But he had been treating Wildflour rudely, hadn't he? How could he patch up something like this? What would ma or da do? Well, firstly, they wouldn't dump glitter on someone. After that? If they did? It was too farfetched a scenario to contemplate.

"H-how about we get you cleaned up and we can go to a place that has that uh... Ethically grown paper and supplies? I'll buy it." He had some money saved up from chores and helping Da grade papers. Surely that would help.

Ruriska
XD poor hurt baby. sdlfkjsldf ahh. I'm so sorry Wildflour

They would live in the same house but never speak again. Wildflour was already making plans and deciding how to explain to their parents that he and his brother were now estranged.

He wasn’t expecting Tough to call him back and Wildflour stopped before he reached the door, looking over his shoulder. His brother did seem genuinely contrite and he didn’t relish having to ignore him for the rest of their lives. Oh and there was that tiny guilty feeling for calling his brother a barbarian.

"It’s fine," he replied, not sniffing a bit at all. "We’ll just use the paper that’s there. We’ve already got it, we might as well make something nice."” He sighed. "I’ll go clean up." There was a brief moment of hesitation. "And… I’m sorry too. I know I’m not very fun and I think too much but I can’t help it. That's just how I am."

Magician Arcana

Tough was at a loss for things to say, but at least his brother wasn't going to give him the cold shoulder indefinitely. "It's okay. It is part of who you are and..." And...?

"And I think that even if it's tough sometimes, I still like that part of you. Or something," Clearing his throat, he bashfully looked at the floor and nodded, "Yeah, go clean up!"

---

As Wildflour cleaned up, Tough got busy. He cleaned the glitter as best he could and then he sat down and made a nice card, this one with a lot of writing. He left it on the center of the table and went to wherever their kitchen was, hoping that something he knew Wildflour liked to eat was there. If not, then he'd just hide in there for a while.

The outside had a picture of the two of them smiling. On the inside, he had written: You are fun. I really think you're great, Wildflour. You can redeem this card for one punch and I won't get angry at it, okay?

love From, Tough Talker
