User Image More and more, Hallon had started to wander from their family grove much to the concern of his mother. She made no move to stop him, had only taken him aside to speak gently to him of the dangers that lay beyond the safety of their forested home. Hallon had been undeterred, though he promised to be as careful as he could. In truth, he wanted to see so much of the outside world that it almost hurt. What lay beyond their little grove? What sort of stories and adventures might await him?

Having grown up on tales of knighthood and valiant stories of courage and and peril, the young stallion very much thought he would like to be a knight one day. His father and mother could not teach him much in those ways, not that Hallon minded whatsoever. Still, he thought, it would be nice if he could learn one day.

Gingerly picking his way through the underbrush, careful not to tangle his own tree within the many other low hanging branches, Hallon squinted against the sun as he crept out into the light. The warmth felt wonderful against his scaly hide, and he could feel the leaves of his tree stretching up to catch the dusty rays. He would walk farther today, he decided, just far enough that he would pass that little river he'd found the other day.

With his goal set firmly in mind, he started out at a leisurely trot, his eyes eagerly roaming for any stray treasures he might be able to snatch up and bring back to his sister.

The forest opened up before Bedwyr as he followed his path, a deer trail sparsely covered in vegetation. It had been a while since he had been through this forest on his circuit across the land; last time, he'd skirted it to stay out in the open, where he could sense anything coming his way. That had been just after the attack on the Vanaras, just after he'd left once he saw their daughter brought safely back from the brink of bleeding out. TinĂºviel was a small mare, and the wounds she'd received at the claws and teeth of a skinwalker had near covered the whole upper half of her body in a red sheen. Bedwyr shuddered at the memory and pressed onward into the forest.

That herd... Something about them made him check in more often than he did with his other patients. Some days it seemed almost as if they were cursed to live in the shadow of violence, its presence ever threatening to rear its ugly head. That had been their second time attacked by skinwalkers, and though it had been a different perpetrator this time... The herd's wariness meant that there was no doubt worse to come. He had treated the alpha's wounds after the first attack and he knew the warning: some day, the skinwalkers would return in force, and every attack could be either the last or one among many.

More than anything, Bedwyr feared that one day he would return to the herdlands and find dozens of skeletons, all with the cloven hooves of the Cerynei breed.

The old knight's mouth twisted into a frown at the thought. That was, of course, the worst case scenario, finding that the patients he had come to care for had succumbed to some wound or sickness in his absence. It was impossible, of course, for him to reach everyone in time. He was not the only healer in the land, though. Others could be of help if it were necessary.

With a sigh, Bedwyr turned his attention from the heavy thoughts that weighed on him and to the light of the forest around him. This place was meant for peace. The birdsong, the dappling of green sunlight on the soft ground. A ways in the distance, something glittered golden in the sunlight - something that moved. It took a moment for Bedwyr to focus on it, to realize why he had not seen it sooner: it was a stallion, with a small forest of his own borne on his back that camouflaged him in these woods.

He looked so similar to the Vanaras alpha and her kin that Bedwyr stared for a few moments before he regained his senses. "Who goes there?" he called into the forest.

Sorry about all the outside references; Bedwyr's been going through a lot lately with the mentioned herd, the Vanaras, and I guess he had a lot more to think about than I knew.

The stallion stopped almost comically at the sound of another's voice, his hooves biting into the dirt as he immediately ground to a halt. His blue eyes were wide with surprise rather than fright, and he took his time in studying the stranger. His hide almost resembled the sky with its hues of blue. His tail was similar to his father's and sister's, but he only had one horn protruding from his brow. Manners had been ingrained in him from a young age, as well as his natural friendliness, so Hallon did not hesitate to greet the other, older stallion.

"I am Hallon," He said, reigning in his impulse to trot closer to investigate just in case the other male would not take kindly to it. "This is my family grove. Well... close to it. I have not seen you before, stranger, but you are welcome here. There is a river nearby, should you care to drink." His mother would be pleased, he thought, for he had offered the courtesies necessary to strangers. Though his father was more of the sort to be immediately suspicious, such a thing did not occur to Hallon on instinct. He had never seen the harshness of the outside world before; why would strangers possibly wish them ill?

Golden ears pricked forward, and he shifted his weight with the sound of rustling leaves, feeling the roots that encased his body offer a gentle squeeze against his ribs. "Have you traveled far, stranger? From outside these woods?" Hope brimmed underneath the question. He was eager for knowledge about the world, especially when his encounters with outsiders were few and far between.

If luck was with him, this stranger would be in no rush to leave!

Bedwyr gave the young stallion (well, young by his standards, anyway) a nod as he introduced himself. His eyebrows twitched up a tiny bit at Hallon's courtesy and generosity; apparently, this forest really did foster peace. This being the first time he had come across one of its residents, he was glad to meet such a lad. "I am Bedwyr, and a quench to my thirst is just what I need," he replied, automatically swallowing against the uncomfortable dryness in his throat at the thought. "Would you show me the way?" he asked, stepping forward a bit, but not so close that Hallon might feel uncomfortable. Bedwyr knew the value of personal space too well to encroach on it excepting instances of an emergency.

"I have traveled very far, it seems, farther and farther every day." And so it did - crossing the Kawani was a months-long task, even for a person of his size. Bedwyr only crossed the width of it, too, following a path from the east and west; there were plenty of places he had never been. He knew of them, having met their traveling residents, but he had never been to some... The desert, for example, or the swamps to the south, both east and west. He'd never crossed the mountains, though he'd been to the valley of the Imladris herd. His usual haunts were forests and plains. "I am a traveling healer, tending patients across the land. It's good to finally meet a denizen of this place; I have been here before, you see, and it has the look of a forest well-cared-for, but I did not run into anyone on my way through."

"Of course!" Hallon grinned, swinging around without a second thought to lead the way. He certainly didn't seem to mind the stallion stepping closer, choosing to hang back a little so that he could still speak with him instead of having to call over his shoulder. "A healer.... My mother knows some of tending wounds. It's an admirable profession, that." Devoting his life to helping others... yes, Hallon's opinion of this stranger continued to grow. He led them past some old, towering oaks, and the gentle sound of running water soon grew louder. The sunlight trickled through the leaves and branches of the trees overshadowing the river, causing the water to sparkle in the light.

"Do you ever have a set destination in mind? Or do you merely go where you are needed?" He did not mean to ask so many questions, but he was eager and wished to know more. "Ah! I will pass the compliments to my mother and father. She will be pleased to hear it and would offer her thanks, I am certain." His father, less so... but Hallon wouldn't mention that.

"Thank you," said Bedwyr, following the golden stallion and his swaying foliage as he chose his path through the trees. They strolled almost next to each other, but Hallon took just enough of a lead that Bedwyr could pinpoint the general direction in which he was being led. "Your mother sounds as though she is a mare of many talents," he said when Hallon had finished speaking. Looking up at the oaks they passed beneath, Bedwyr felt his eyes grow wide. "This seems an old place, and old things can be difficult to keep healthy." Myself included, he thought with a modicum of self-deprecation, recalling the migraines that near put him in a coma after doing too much healing. That had never been a problem, when he had been more combative with his body than with his magic - he could take a beating and never be the kind of disabled that overusing his magic made him.

"It's rather both," he said. "I visit herds I'm familiar with on my way across the land, and I turn around when I can no longer find my way forward. I'm always heading toward or away from the sun, so it's not too hard to avoid getting lost." He turned a smile on the young stallion. "It was different when I was younger. I had a herd to follow, and our ways to protect."

Approaching the water's edge, Bedwyr looked down at the pristine, shimmering stream. This place, with its light of gold and green and silver, all its natural light, was one made to take the breath from his lungs. "What of you, lad?" he asked, turning his gaze from the water. "Do you have aspirations to travel?"

Note that Bedwyr is... probably in his late fifties or early sixties in actual years, not just as an old soul xD so Hallon is young to him, hence the "lad" and "young" stuff.
