The edges of the sea brushed against his feet the diving gear sitting heavily on his back as he watched the sun shimmering silently over the waters surface. Fingers moved over the straps locking them in place as he took his first few steps into the water.
"You're being quiet today Sylvia."
There was no response as he picked up the re-breather tucking it into his mouth as he pulled down the goggles and made his way into the water. It wasn't till he plunged down face first into the cold sea that she finally spoke.
<< I don't much like the water.... >>
Roland made no comment even in his thoughts, he focused on the gear rented from the Sun hunters. Testing all the gauges and the breather before making his way deeper.
< Why though? You never really complained before. >
There was silence again as he swam down deeper, << There was that one time on the boat, the ghost ship. It's something more I can't say I just don't like it. It's big. Too big. Dark. >>
Roland would have shrugged had he not been digging through the sea pulling himself forward, the faint glow of a S.P.E.C.T.R.E watch guiding him towards the caves. Still the mental thought of shrugging reached her. << Just shut up and swim, that new toy of yours is going to make us fish food. >>
< And yet here we are not being food. > He added as they drifted into the first opening of a cave. The watches map flickering before mostly blanking out. Caves hadn't been mapped yet...

The cave wasn't much better for Sylvia, she was still distraught a tiny clawing sensation in the back of Roland's mind as he worked to find a better light source the his watch.
<< We're fine Sylvia, the largest threats would be outside not in here. >> He sank against the wall a dull tink of his tank as he rested against it trying to sort out where he was
< You're being an a**, I told you I don't know why I just don't like it down here. >
Glancing about again he checked the watch, the faint glow of the map showing the path they had taken into the caves, the stones glowing faintly around them but only a few. Pushing off the wall he dipped down.
<< I'm not, I don't understand why you're like that. You're fussing at me mroe and more lately. >>
< Because you don't care about anything you don't even care about my opinion right now and I'm part of you! You've been quiet since Russia you hardly get on the phone to talk to anyone, you don't talk to anyone face to face and NOW you drag me down her! >
There was a burst of bubbles from the re-breather as Roland sighed outward, << What do you mean? You think I want to die or get attacked down here? >>
There was a hiss of frustration in his mind, < No! It's that you just.... you don't talk you don't do anything you're just wandering around since you got back. First you left wanting to get away, then you wanted to come back and now that we're back you don't do anything still! You're just as quiet as you where out there! >
He could feel her storming off into the back of his head retreating from his own thoughts as he continued to explore the slightly larger cave they where in.

Sylvia silent gave Roland time to study the cave closer, some of the stones where exactly what they had been told to look for. Glowing faintly with power, a slight tingle in the air he could almost feel through Sylvia who had even seemed to return to the forefront of his mind to watch with his eyes.
The moment he grabbed the stone he could tell it was the right kind, quickly he gathered three of them, unable to find more as his hands brushed along the cave floor. Just as quickly as Sylvia had appeared she was gone again retreating leaving Roland alone.
Why was he down here? Why did he care about coming back? Most of his friends had wandered off to do their own things, or had gone back to their lovers. He was alone, be it halfway around the world where he didn't know the language, or he was back at home staring at Twitter but never posting. Checking his watch he started to backtrack his way out of the cave.

He was making his way back again, the light from the surface just barely able to cut down at the exit to the cave. He made his way towards that light, the sack of stones bouncing off his hip as he swam both him and Sylvia lost in their own thoughts.
And nothing happened.
Roland found himself blissfully alone as he swam towards the surface, the whole time Sylvia shaking softly in his mind eager to get away from the water as Roland simply existed.
If something had happened? Would it matter? Who would care if his body vanished in the ocean and never came back. Sylvia only cared because it was her neck on the line as well, but who would miss him anymore? For a moment his strokes faltered an he debated this before finally making his way to the shore.

It was another hour before he settled down, the gear was returned and he was wrapped in a blanket in his tiny dorm like room. It was quiet still here, alone. It suited him, in his mind at least. His fingers traced over the stone debating the rune. Something to hold a charge, something to hold something.
Something he felt he was slipping on. He felt like he'd lost connection with a lot of things, the exact opposite of the stone he was about to carve. He pushed the thoughts aside, grabbing the first stone placing it on the table before him.
Over and over the stone was scraped away digging into the rock trying to remember what was worth keeping storing, charging. The idea of friends again. Slowly the blue light started to burn inside the stone.
He grabbed the next one rolling it over in his hands, Shu and Jordan where still around. He couldn't recall the last time he spoke to Peyton, and Candace? She was gone in the wind, he hadn't seen the closest thing to a real mentor in ages. He continued to scratch away at the stone remembering the good times with each of those people. Again the stone lit up.
The last stone though he picked up rubbing his thumb over it as he started right into it, the first two where almost perfect burning bright as he dug into the third one. Jordan was back with Rep though, or around him more. At least Ro figured that much, Peyton and Candace where gone and somehow he always worried Shu would up and leave as well. She was too kind, too sweet, a child almost. He'd lose her too, she'd wander away to others or simply meet a horrible fate just like Nevada.
He didn't realize what he was doing, the stone cracking as he dug at it, splitting down the center as he wandered his own thoughts. When he finally noticed the split he stared at it blankly biting his bottom lip before tossing the failed stone aside into a near by trash can in the corner of his room before moving to grab his jacket.
He needed to find something else to distract his mind.
