Tertio Rome: Social and Political Structure

The Roman Demigods are a lot more organized and disciplined than their Greek Counterparts. They have developed a society that extends past the whole Camp Setting and into an actual Social Paradigm.

There are different ranks and titles that determine one's place within the Society of Tertio Rome and there are certain rules and regulations about how many people may hold that rank or title at a certain time. These roles and titles come with different responsibilities and criteria to meet in order to obtain them. All of the current Social and Political Titles and Roles are listed below in their own posts; they are listed in order of importance.

Post One: Pontifex Maximus
Post Two: Praetor
Post Three: Augur
Post Four: Senator
Post Five: Centurion
Post Six: Legionnaire
Post Seven: Probatio
Post Eight: Civilian/ Retiree

Pontifex Maximus
(Literal Translation: Greatest Pontiff)

The Highest Position available in Roman Society, Pontifex Maximus is usually reserved only for crisis situations. However, after the War with the Giants Jason Grace was voted as Pontifex Maximus by the senate and it is a title he had held onto since.

The Pontifex Maximus holds particular importance within Roman Society because, as Pontifex Maximus, the person who holds the title is in charge of the Roman Religion and also holds great political power. Usually, who to appoint as Pontifex Maximus is voted for by the Senate but during the Giant War a Legacy of Apollo called Octavian actually made himself the self appointed Pontifex Maximus. This had never been done before and since because to do so was to compare one's self with an Emperor.

Since Octavian, it has been decided that Pontifex Maximus is a title that should be voted upon always and never self appointed. This is to avoid the disaster that followed after Octavian's appointment.

Praetor

Praetors are the Commanders of a Legion. There are usually only two Praetors per Legion and they handle all the affairs of their Legion from Battles to Diplomacy. They are often set apart from their peers by wearing the symbols of Praetorship: A Purple Cloak and the Eagle.

Praetors are usually voted into their position by the Senate and usually serve as Senators before their appointments. This usually means that they have to serve a minimum of 5 years within the Legion (in order to qualify for election as a Senator) but this rule can also be broken under some circumstances. There are quite a few famous Paraetors who earned their rank through alternate methods rather than election. Some have been given their powers in case of Emergency; some have had the title passed onto them by former Praetors; Some have been "lifted on shields" after exceptional feats of bravery; and others have even managed to earn early access into the Senate to become Praetors rather quickly.

However, Praetorship can be a very daunting task and a heavy burden. They have to lead via example and sit as the Heads of Camp Gemini's Roman Contingent. All the while keeping their allies from marching across the River and laying waste to the Greeks they now share a home with. Praetors are also not above the laws set out by tradition and must follow them and may even sometimes have to take responsibility for the acts of their citizens or Legionnaires.

Augur

The Augur of the 12th Legion is an important figure within Roman Society who has been given the ability of foresight by the Gods. Augurs can usually observe omens and interpret them in order to advise and guide The Legion through future events.

There is usually only one Augur within the 12th Legion and how they are chosen is a closely guarded secret. However they are chosen does not mater though as what is important is what they can do once they have been given their gifts. Most Augurs can use the flight patterns of birds as a form of Divination but some can also read omens in the entrails of sacrificed animals. The Modern Day Augurs simply use the fluff from stuffed animals rather than living animals to the same effect. How they divine the future is also usually left to them; some Augurs have used Tarot Cards, Star Charts and other means to relay prophecies.

Apart from their role as a primary Oracle, the Augur is also the Third Highest Honour in Roman Society. Should both Praetors be away or resign their posts, the Augur naturally ascends to the rank of Commander of the Legion.

Augurs are also really important because they give Roman Demigods and Legacies their tattoos - which are an important status symbol within the Roman Demigod Community - through a ceremony that burns it into the person's skin. These tattoos show the years of service a Roman has done and who their Divine ancestor is. It also has the SPQR Crest incorporated.

Senator

Senators are ten elected officials chosen from the Legion to govern over the Roman Camp and Settlement. They meet within the Senate House within Tertio Rome (and did so in New Rome before) to discuss any issues that might arise that arise; these debates can often be about small trivial matters like land disputes or simple crimes but then go on to be about larger more important matters like whether or not to allow a quest or deciding if the Romans should go to war.

Senators are elected annually and are perhaps some of the most important people within Tertio Rome; they have the hardest and most rigid criteria to meet in order to gain their rank and title and they essentially act as the Government even though the Praetors and the Pontifex Maximus sit on the Senate. All have an equal say in the Senate House.

To become a Senator one must have served five years within the Legion, put themselves forward or be nominated to become a Senator and then voted in by the Roman Public. The only exception to this rule is if someone acts as a "God's Representative" like Nico Di Angelo when he was on the Senate as Pluto's Ambassador. Most Senators are Praetors or Centurions.

Centurion

Centurions are the Roman equivalent to Greek Cabin Counselors and serve as the leader of a Roman Cohort.

There are two Centurions assigned to every Roman Cohort, they act as the Cohort's Leaders and Commanders during Battle and follow a complex chain of command not just between the standard Roman Ranks but also between Centurions themselves. Romans who are put forward for the Rank of Centurion usually have served a large amount of time within the Legion and usually have proven themselves through an act of valour or a quest. There have been the odd occasions where circumstances have forced promotions but, all in all, the Rank of Centurion is a highly respected one and is quite the burden for someone who is not ready for the responsibility.

These responsibilities don't just apply to their cohort but more often than not also apply to the Senate as well due to the fact that most Centurions become Senators. Not all Centurions become Senators because they feel their talents lie more in battle than in politics but others accept the Senate House as just a new battleground. Centurions also have to be aware of the ladder of power between Centurions as well; unlike with most ranks that have many who share the same rank but are equal, Centurions can also have to answer to Centurions who are senior to them in terms of status or appointment. This chain of command varies quite frequently though and keeps Centurions on their toes.

Legionnaire

Legionnaires are full-fledged members of the Twelfth Legion Fulminata. Having completed their Probatio year without incident, Legionnaires are claimed by their divine ancestor and given their tattoo by the Augur through the induction ceremony. Once they have completed ten years of service they may become citizens of Rome and retire to attend University within the City and/or start a family or a business.

Legionnaires are common foot-soldiers who obey the commands of their Cohort's Centurion. Legionnaires may rise in rank through a variety of ways be it years of service, vote, proving themselves, completing quests or any other circumstances that warrant a promotion.

Current Legionnaires:
Everyone who is not an officer or of Rank. Or worse Probatio.

Probatio

Probatio is the lowest rank within the Legion and is given to new arrivals. When someone arrives and joins the Legion they are given a tablet with this word on it to put around their neck; this mark often sees them lumbered with tasks that are below the other campers and because they are not yet full members of the Legion they are treated differently to everyone else.

Probatio's however can make life easier for themselves. If they have letters of recommendation they can pretty much pick which Cohort they wish to join. All they need after that is someone who will sponsor them or "stand for them" and teach them the ways of the Legion under pain of death.

Probatio literally means "Test" in reference to the fact that the Probatio Year in the Legion is a test of one's mettle. After serving a year as Probatio (or after doing something worthy of promotion), the Probatio will become a full member of the Legion and a Legionnaire.

Citizen/ Retiree

After serving for Ten Years within the Legion, members of the Legion may officially become Citizens of Rome. This means that after they decide to leave the Legion they can retire and find a home for themselves within the Roman Settlement. Tertio Rome has a small number of schools and colleges that Retired Legionnaires may attend should they wish and a lot of Demigods have been known to start their own families and businesses after leaving the Legion.

That being said, the training of a Roman Soldier never really fades and on more than one occasion the Citizens of Rome have been used as Auxiliary Troops for the Legion in high stake battles. This has earned the Citizens/ Retirees a strange position within the Roman Society for even though they are not soldiers and may not even hold their ranks anymore, the Citizens of Rome and Legion Retirees are treated with a great amount of respect and care by the Legion. The Legion admires the fact that the Citizens have managed to make a life for themselves despite the hardships and also respect them as fearful warriors. Citizens and Retirees may also rejoin the Legion as Legionnaires or at higher ranks should they feel it appropriate.

In terms of social classes and everyday life, certain families hold great amounts of sway within Rome and most normal social conventions are followed accordingly.

Retirees are also honour bound to help current Legionnaires and Legion members both inside Tertio Rome and in the Mortal World.
