Anyone who knew the little filly wouldn't be able to recognize her at the moment. The normal bouncy foot steps that often mimicked dance moves were gone. She instead stepped heavily through the forest, a slight limp in one of her back legs from one of the other children tackling her far too hard in tree climbing training causing her to slow down even more. Her head was lowered so she could avoid any direct eye contact with higher ranking members of the flock, least it bring even more warrant for backlash and another lesson in her rank within the hierarchy. After everything that had happened today she looked everything a filly of her age shouldn't be; depressed and very solemn.
Kaia had one thing to be thankful for passed down in her genes was the dark smokey markings on most of her body that allowed her to more easily blend into her surroundings in the darkened forest. After hearing brutal stabs at her looks and over all future usefulness from the other children and even a few from the same adults meant to teach her all day the one thing Kaia wanted to be is alone. She needed some time to recharge and be able to lick her wounds in the safety of her family's small piece of territory. It wasn't much but it would give her some privacy. Kaia could only pray that her brash sister was still having fun with her friends, being subjected to more blunt "You can show them you're better if you just try harder!" was not something at this particular moment Kaia would be able to handle with only a forced grin. She feared that her growing discontent and anger at her situation would snap up at her sister and she would be the target of her unleashed fury. Kaia adored her sister dearly and she know Nakita only meant well. However her increasing lack of understanding of what was going on behind her back and how it was getting worse was chipping away at her sister's case that Kaia would ever be able to 'prove her worth' as her sister so longingly put it.
Letting out a long sigh of relief when the small cropping of trees that her mother claimed ownership over came into view. Finally.
With a kick up in her pace it didn't take the small filly long to reach her favored tree, already one of her very poorly built nests laying at the base of it. Unlike her mother who had the luxury of claws, or her sister who could simply fly up Kaia had no way of making up to the safety of the canopy anymore since she had grown too big to simply ride on her mother's back. Thus, she had been learning how to build her own unconventional nest with plenty of fluffy down feathers for warmth. She let out a silent thank you for her past self that thought ahead enough to rebuilt the nest with new materials this morning heading off to her lesson.
Unceremoniously the filly dropped like a cord of wood into her bed. Kicking her very sore back legs out Kaia couldn't help herself but to drape one of her front legs over her muzzle to cover her nose and eyes from the setting sun beaming through the trees.
Tears welled up as the frustrations and built up of emotions throughout the day finally spilled out. Kaia was not a stranger in hiding her actions from the others around her. Sealing her mouth shut she relaxed her body, letting the tears free flow on their own. To others looking at her she would like she was just in a very relaxed sleeping position and they wouldn't dare disturb her least face the wrath of her protective mother no doubt somewhere in the trees above her.
However Kaia's ruse had one weak spot. With her mind drifting else where Kaia couldn't help but subconsciously clear her now running nose with a very loud sniff.
If the first one didn't send up a red flag, the second sniff louder sniff most certainly did.
Kaia's body tensed now that she realized the mistake that she had made. Futile as it was Kaia prayed to any divine that might be listening at the moment. 'Please tell me mom is anywhere but here! Please, please, plea-'
The loud CRRRAAACCCCK of her mother's claws raking against the bark ringing out through the trees caused the young filly to let out a groan as she tried to wipe her cheeks on her leg.
Clearly today was just not her lucky day.

It didn't take Anya long to make it down from her perch high in the canopy to ground level. Granted in her heist, she might have chipped and even severally cracked a few of her talons. But the pain shooting in her feet was pushed right aside as she made a large leap from the trunk of one of the larger trees in her territory. Slamming to the ground with a loud thud Anya quickly tug her front talons into the soft ground below her, using them as landing gear to keep her from skidding in the mud.
"Kaia!" Anya let out a worried cry as she rushed over to her youngest daughter. Using her front talons almost as hands Anya grabbed a hold of Kaia's legs, lifting it from Kaia's face to check it for any injuries before gazing down at it to make sure no bones were broken. Setting it gently back down she went to work giving Kaia's body a good once over in a panicked frenzy.
Making small notes in her mental check list Anya gave a quizzical scan over Kaia one more time. Okaaaaaay, so besides what looked like a pulled muscle in her thigh Anya couldn't see any other injuries...But still, something clearly had upset her chick to the point that she was in tears!
Lowering her body next to Kaia Anya craned her head over Kaia, snuggling her cheek with her own as she used her weight to push her into a protective but yet comforting embrace. "Sweet one, what is the matter? What happened?!" Anya had no time to worry about forming her words correctly so that her thick accent did not overpower anything that she was trying to say. Instead, she elected to keep her words short and simple. Finding out why her child was so distressed was the only thing that mattered in the world right now.

Kaia couldn't help but accept the warmth and comfort that having her mother pressed against her brought. She closed her eyes, savoring the moment to calm herself to a reasonable level so she could answer her mother without causing any further worry cause of how choked up her voice had gotten. "M-mom. I'm fine, really. Just my uh..." Pausing for a moment her ears pinned back as she raked her brain for something to explain to her mother. "Leg hurts?"

Anya's eyebrows raised in minor amusement at her daughter's failed attempt at lying to her. Why she would have to admit she was somewhat proud at her at least trying. Anya made a small mental note to store a way that she had to teach her filly on a later date how to lie and not utterly suck at it. "Uh huh. If that is what you want to believe." Lifting one of her legs Anya crooked a long talon out, using it carefully to wipe the still flowing tears from Kaia's cheeks. With pursed lips she gazed down at her little one. "But I don't buy it. You can drop the act now and tell me what really is upsetting you. Was it the children again?"

Rainbow head wings fluttered in distress as her mother took a well aimed shot at the root of the issue. She was never one to mince words nor allow someone to beat around the bush. Kaia shifted uncomfortably in her mother's embrace. Even with her eyes being solid white there was this weird way Anya could still pierce the filly with a no-nonsense look when it was time to get serious that would cause Kaia to crack under the pressure within minutes. "I...well...you see!" Frowning deeply she lowered her head to try to avoid looking right at her mother, only for her head to be brought right back up by a tender talon under her chin. With a weak wobble of her lower lip Kaia finally nodded, not wanting to admit the truth out loud.

Anya's expression darkened drastically when the truth finally spilled from Kaia. She didn't even need to ask the details, already she could imagine what happened. This wasn't the first time she had to deal with her poor chick being mentally abused by others her age. She had a sneaking feeling that this unfounded resentment was spilling into the adults around The Flock as well as time and time again Kaia would under preform in the simple tasks asked of any chick, even if Kaia was physically at a huge disadvantage than others her age. Weakness after all was not acceptable and others would think Kaia would cause more burden on The Flock's resources if she couldn't pull her own weight.
Her talon curled in it's self as she lowered the talon back down from Kaia's face. Already she could feel her teeth grinding together to channel the boiling rage building up inside her. This was the final straw. No longer would she be sitting idle as recommended by her sisters why one of her children was being abused. Granted, sadly she couldn't go out there and punish the ruthless little demon spawn herself. But there was nothing stopping her from taking out her rage on their mothers and the other adult's who had been joining in with the younglings.
But, at the sight of Kaia's large pleading eyes Anya pushed her anger back down. She still had a more important task at hand. Softening her expression forcefully Anya leaned back down to nuzzle her filly. "I am so sorry, sweet one. Whatever they said to you, know it isn't true. You know as much as I do that they act out of ignorance and prejudice. They are too blind to see what a wonderfully strong chick you are in your own way. I promise though it will not be happening again." Lifting her head up she casted a small smile. trying to make Kaia feel better. "Remember the stories of the great big bears that I told you? And what happens when someone messes with a mother's cubs?"

Kaia couldn't lie and say that her mother's sweet words and just how upset someone was finally about the situation didn't make her feel better. It was certainly more empathy given to her than what her sister had ever given! She was a bit shocked at the nuzzles, one of her eyes closing as she finally cracked a wobbly smile. "That the mother bear fights even the biggest rival and protects her cubs till death? And something about the bear often feeding her opponent right back to her babies? And...and..somethin' about the circle of life going on?"

With a tilt of her head she raised an eyebrow as her lips popped in amusement. "Well, I wouldn't say I would go so far as to feed you girls the corpses. Circle of Life or not. That tends to be just a little frowned on." Letting out a short chuckle she nipped at Kaia's growing mane, trying to lighten the mood and help her filly feel better. "But I'll have you know chicky, that I took some serious tips from how the mother bear handles things with her cubs. I'll always have your back and won't let anyone hurt you without a fight. No matter what anyone else says!" Anya's eye caught sight that it was now well after dark, and even the older members of The Flock were starting to wind down. "Kaia come now, it's late you need to rest you've had a very tough day. I'm sure you're tired after all of this."

"Noooooo!" With a cry of protest Kaia struggled in her mother's embrace. She wasn't even tired at all! And Nakita wasn't even home yet, how was it fair that she had to go to sleep why her sister was still out having fun!? Sure, Nakita was older but only by a few minutes! "It's too early. You haven't even told me tonight's story!" It was a tradition to feed Kaia's curiosity every night with a new story of the wonders outside of The Flock that her mother had encountered in her past life. Anya simply couldn't expect the filly to willingly calm down without at least one story!

"Ohhhh no you don't!" Pinning her wee one down Anya quickly repositioned herself and blew playful raspberries on Kaia's sides as punishment for trying to escape bedtime. When Kaia protested because she hadn't gotten her nightly story Anya tsked at herself as she tossed her head back in mock shame. "Oh! You're right. How could I? Ugh! Well there goes my crown for 'Mother of The Year!' For shame, I was in the front running of it too." Grinning impishly Anya flopped down into the nest, using one of her front legs to pull Kaia down with her. "Hm, now let's see. What to tell tonight? Perhaps the story of The Turtle and the Scorpion?" Pausing she opened a eye lazily to watch Kaia shake her head vigorously at the thought of having that story be repeated again! "Have I yet to tell you of the great body of water called an ocean that is so big you can't see the end of it from either side?" Taking the small gasp of awe in approval Anya settled in with her chick. "Well, rumor has it that you can find it to the south. It's waters are filled with salt...ah, you remember what salt is, yes?"

Kaia's head bobbed in an excited nod. "Yep! You told me before there were giant fields of salt pools before!" Pausing her eyebrows raised as a naive thought popped into her head. "Does the salt from the ocean come from those salt pools? Do other Soquili carry this salt to the ocean? Why would they do that, mother!? Does it help the ocean or at they bad eggs!?" Kicking her legs out in a mini flail Kaia looked up at her mother for a response with true distress lingering on her face at the thought of people poisoning a whole water supply!

Wha??? Soquili carrying salt into the ocean? By the great mother how did her daughter ever come up with an idea like that? Letting out a amused snort Anya craned her head up, starting to prune Kaia's headwings tenderly. It was a little trick that Anya had learned to do when her daughter's had gotten themselves too worked up. Or, often in Kaia's case the pleasant feeling of pruning was enough most nights to calm Kaia into sleep. Which quickly was becoming a nightly ritual since Anya had quickly noticed without the pruning or something to help her calm down Kaia had difficulty falling asleep on her own accord much like her father did.
"No, no, Kaia. Salt something that naturally is everywhere. Some salt is even in us right now! It's as natural as the air we breathe. Although, I'll admit I don't know about there being bad eggs who carry raw chunks of salt to dump into the ocean? I know there are fish like Soquili that live in the ocean who wouldn't take a liking to someone trying to destroy their home." Peering down at the confused look Kaia was staring at Anya with she let out a muffled giggle in between her mouthful of rainbow feathers. Spitting them out she explained, "They are strange looking things, who have fins in place of tail feathers and manes!"
Smiling brightly she worked her way down, pruning now her child's messy tail feathers since she mentioned them. "You, my sweet chick will simply have to find that out yourself one of these days and then come back and tell me if there are really bad eggs that are poisoning the ocean. But! As I was saying. The ocean is larger than anything you've seen before. Beyond it lays lands that even most people here have never seen. Our native home is over the ocean, Kaia. Oh, how much I wish you girls could see it. See the great mountains that kiss the sky and the rolling plains that go on! It's an amazing sight." Letting out a dreamy sigh she lowered her head back to her work on Kaia's tail. Anya didn't want to voice just how much she missed her homeland out loud. Her child had after all enough to worry about, least her mother being homesick on top of it.

Kaia couldn't hide the mew in contentment at all the attention she was getting. Though this had become quite normal for the filly, having one-on-one time with her mother outside of these little talks was rare and she enjoying savoring it as much as she could. "Ho-" Yawning again she struggled to keep her eyes open. Her own body was betraying her darn it! She couldn't fall asleep for real! Kaia had important plans to see how the change of patrol worked in the southern borders. She wanted to sneak off now, but at the same time her own interest over this new 'ocean' had gotten the better of her. "How did you get here then, mom?"

"That is a very good question!" Anya chirped a bit too quickly. She was excited about the thought of perhaps one day her children heading back to the land she was no longer welcome to and getting to see it's beauty for themselves. "There is a small land bridge that connects the Kawani lands with this foreign land. It is very far up north and you can only cross it in the deep months of winter when the ice has formed a hard enough crust over the waters. I, along with many others crossed this bridge one winter." Anya's expression soften when she noticed that Kaia's eyes had fully closed and her breathing had relaxed. Thinking her daughter had finally given up the ghost and drifted into the land of dreams Anya carefully untangled herself from Kaia before lifting herself up and stepping out of the nest. Grabbing a hand full of the feathers she had plucked in her pruning Anya carefully laid them over Kaia for warmth. "Spat' spokoyno , dorogoy." The last piece of her good night was as always wishing her daughter's off in her native language before giving a curt nuzzle but loving nuzzle on the head.
Anya turned from the nest, stalking off into the treeline towards the main part of The Flock's territory. Her talons clicked together as she walked away. With each step the cataclysm of emotions she had bottled up were being unleashed. Snarling darkly Anya took to the trees with one powerful leap and was off into the darkness with another quick thrust forward.
She had a few poor fools who clearly had a death wish to go visit tonight.
