Seasons change; baby animals leave their nests; life and death happen simultaneously; and the circle of life goes on. It happened every year, and every year it was more beautiful and more poetic than the last. Happiness had found these past couple of years a bit different than most, however, seeing as it had brought changes in her life, changes for the good, of course. She was no longer alone; no longer traveling the world in search of her brother - and not only that, but the discovery of her brother had brought her a family. No longer was she the mare without anyone, now she was Aunt Happiness, Great Aunt Happiness. She was a sister, a friend. Her brother's children rarely showed their face around the home anymore, but the memory and the thought of them kept her heart warm.

It had been many months now, since Bliss had come back to their home with his life's mate, Evelyn. It had been many months now since they had rekindled their love for one another, and out of that came children. It had been many months now since those children had grown into young adults themselves, eager to take on the world. Nothing - absolutely nothing could make the old mare happier than seeing the one's she loved. And yet, she wanted something for herself.

Happiness had always been told she lived up to her name, but she hadn't felt it in her soul in a long while. She was not jealous of her brother and Evelyn, oh no never...it just felt, strange? Something was clearly missing, no matter how truly happy she seemed and claimed she was, something was definitely missing. But what exactly that was, or perhaps whom, was still a mystery. Every time she met someone new, it had been rewarding, and exciting. She had friends, wonderful and lovely friends, but...no one stuck out to her as someone who could make her happy.

And it frightened her. Happiness not happy? How could that be! She had a family - her brother's family, but they were still family! She had a life, a home, what could possibly be missing? Well, she knew what it was that was missing, but she hated admitting it to herself. She hated having to realize that 'love' had been something she never got to experience in it's entirety, and she wanted it.

Deep, deep down, she wanted it.

But she also knew that by now, in her old age, she was much, much too young to go out searching! Most Soquili her age had grandchildren by now, for goodness sake! What was she to do! It had been something she struggled with as of late, but she never let it show on her face. No. She must be her namesake, she must, indeed! It was what she had promised her mother.

Oh, her mother.

Happiness frowned at the memory, shaking off the snow as it fell lightly on her mane. She stood in the snowy clearing, not quite focused on anything but her thoughts. What she was doing out there was lost somewhere in the daydream, so she snapped herself back to reality and looked around. How long had she been wandering? How far away from home did she go? Oh! How foolish of her!

The winter chill had descended upon their mountaintop with a vengeance, the heavy snowstorm roaring to lay its thick layer of ice on the mountain. Demon, who loved the cold and snow unlike most of his herd, has slept unsheltered during the storm, curled up along the edges of the herd—alone, as always even after all these years. He had woken up encased in a blanket of snow; his thick hair and the insulating ice having him kept him comfortably warm all night while the storm had raged. He had taken an uncharacteristic moment to bask in the silence, keeping his eyes closed as he listened to the steady rhythm of his breath echoing through the layers of snow. When he finally lifted himself from the ground, the cold powder clinging to his mane and body and a familiar stillness in his joints, he took a moment to admire the shining mirror that the snowdrift provided him, gleaming oranges and yellows in the early morning sunrise.

Then Nana had popped her head up from snow, as brightly as a daisy would on a summer morning. Her much smaller body was easily swamped by the thick layer snow, but she gave a playful yip as a morning greeting, snowflakes clinging to her muzzle and twitching ears. Nana heaved herself up from under the snowbank, her light frame dancing on top of the snow as easily as a winter nymph, and she gave another yip at Demon, hopping about in excitement. She pranced over to the edge of the clearing towards the now-hidden path that wound its way down to the valley, shooting a look over her should at Demon all the while. Her tail wagged back and forth furiously as she padded over to the edge of the clearing and with a final challenging bark at her companion, she shot off into the woods, kicking up dustings of ice in her wake.

And Demon, exhilarated with the first snow of the year and never one to back from a challenge, gave chase.

------------------------------------------------

Demon was not getting old. Anyone who ever dared to suggest that he was not in peak physical condition obviously was severely brain damaged and not worthy of the scarcest thought from Demon’s impeccable mind. Nothing as simple as a leisurely gallop down the icy mountainside would cause someone as magnificent as him to slow down to a trot because of something like physical inability. Demon has simply slowed down for Nana’s sake, a sure sign of his magnanimous nature to make sure his familiar received ample rest from their impromptu race down the mountainside.

The winter breeze that swept down the edge of the mountain and into the flat open valley chilled him for a moment, the feel of the arctic breeze against his back that gleamed in an almost unnoticeable sheen of sweat. Despite Demon’s internal bravado, he could feel the telling ache in his knees and the stinging in his chest as he breathed in and out in short, heavy breaths, the sharp intake of chilled air causing a sharp sting of pain in his throat.

He was not getting old, he told himself, feeling the heavy thumping of his heart in his chest. He was not.

The crisp morning air sent a chill through her body. The first full winter of the season was in full swing, and mother nature left nothing to the imagination, it seemed. To most, that chill was enough to send them fleeing for warmth and shelter, but to the mare, a nice morning stroll, albeit lost in thought, was better than nothing. She has spent far too much of her life hidden away in that cave, on the run from a better life - so a little cold wasn't going to kill her.

No, she'd never let anything stop her - and she hadn't, not since she left. Since the day her mother passed, Happiness set out goals for her future - goals that circled solely around finding her brother, and never stopped until those were fulfilled. Now that they were, new goals could be put in place - but what? Did it matter? She had so much to be grateful and thankful for, and life could now just....happen. Since that day, Happiness felt a freedom that could not be expressed through words, and every day since she'd been living those emotions, it was....wordless joy. Her mother, although however loved, had deterred her young daughter from having the life she had always wanted.

...These were memories Happiness would rather forget.

The silence that came with her position in the snow, however, didn't help her wandering mind, and yet again Happiness found herself drifting into dreamland - thoughts of her mother and her past came swarming about, as painful and crisp as the cold winter's air. No - no! She refused - she refused! Happiness had to be her namesake, and her mother's memory was not a good way to follow through. No! Thoughts of her brother - thoughts of her family - thoughts of anything else but ---!!

The soft sound of movement in the trees surrounding the area had broken the mare out of her trance. The sounds echoed into the silent sky with considerable force, telling Happiness that whomever the presence in the forest was, was much larger than a couple of forest creatures. It was foolish of her to think she was completely alone - regardless of how thick and heavy the snow was this morning, and she huffed in response to the echoing noises. Would they pass, she questioned herself, eyes quickly darting from one edge to the next in anticipation. Normally she'd love and welcome company, but perhaps it wasn't what she needed at the moment.

Oh! But perhaps it was! She grinned, the negativity that surrounded her moments before suddenly lifted. Her brother, in this situation, would call out gleefully, completely careless as to who the noises belonged to, in hopes of meeting a new friend. So she did just that.

"Good morning!" It came out rather harsh and raspy, seeing as the cold had frozen her body, but she hoped it was friendly enough for the moment. Yes. Positivity had gotten her this far in life, she couldn't stop now!!

Demon froze, midway through a deep, heavy heave of his chest as he worked to slow down his heart rate. He took a moment to himself, his face blank as he hurriedly gathered himself. He was in no particular mood for company today, having planned on the race down the mountain to spend his time enjoying the fresh layer of snow with Nana. She was the only soul (at least now, anyway) who he would allow to see him frolic in the snow as though he was still a yearling.

Winter was in his blood and soul. He had been hoping spend the day building himself a nice, comfortable snow cave for him to crawl into, a habit he had indulged in every year since he was a foal. Though back then it had been for a true matter of survival, having spent most of his childhood without parents and left to his own devices. Now though, it was an activity he indulged in still for the pleasure of it. There was something calming about going through the familiar motions. It had always taken him the better part of the day to scout out the perfect location and then slowly mold layers of ice and snow into the perfect sized den for him and Nana. As a foal, even a few inches of snow had been sufficient to build his little cave, but as he had grown, he had often needed to wait until deeper into the winter when the first great blizzard would hit the mountain and drop a few extra feet of snow.

He resigned himself to postpone his plans though, at least for a while. He shook out his mane as he turned to great the stranger, letting the hair fluff out and fall back against his neck attractively. He may not be impeccably groomed today, but he was still as magnificent as ever, he told himself. The faint sheen of sweat on his flank only highlighted his wondrous form, without a doubt. Demon managed to plaster a charming smile across his face as he turned, finally catching sight of pinto mare. “Good morning, miss,” he said, his voice smooth, drawl as he echoed her sentiments. There was only the slightest hitch at the end of his greeting, the only betrayal of his earlier activity. He sauntered closer to the stranger, enjoying the soft sounds of crunching snow beneath his hooves.

“Can I assist you with anything?” he offered politely, hoping that perhaps he could send her on her way and he could continue his day as planned. “You appear to be potentially lost, and what kind of stallion would I be to allow someone as lovely as you to wander unattended?” he said, attempting to inject his normal tinge of teasing flirtation into his voice but falling short. It wouldn’t have fooled Orchu or even Damascus, but for a stranger, well, it would do. It would do.

Okay, so her brother's silent wisdom had paid off! Her greeting had elicited a response, and a friendly one at that! When she laid eyes on who she had greeted, Happiness took in the sight of a rather handsome stallion. He had the look of someone who enjoyed himself in this weather, which was a refreshing sight. Not too many Soquili around these parts enjoyed the crisp feeling of the snow as it coated their hooves. She smiled at him in response, his attempt at making himself look 'attractive' not at all lost on her. It may have been forever since she last flirted, but Happiness liked to think herself somewhat of an expert when it came to the games played.

But perhaps, compared to the stallion, she was a novice. She noted the way he carried himself as he walked toward her, admiring his attempt of a 'show', as she called it so long ago. Oh, it's most definitely been forever since she played, but...she was no stranger to flirtatious behavior.

Happiness also noted the throw away compliment he had given her, and debating giving one in return, as one would do in polite conversation, but it was still new, so she shrugged it off for now.

"I appreciate the sentiment -- and the compliment, but I'm not entirely sure I am lost. I just don't know where I am at the moment," she paused, her words falling over her like a brick as she realized how silly she had just sounded, and laughed. She laughed so hard, her face started to hurt in the coldness of the air. "I realize that may be the very definition of the word lost, but...I seem to have just wandered along, if I retrace my steps I'm sure I'll be okay. And old lady like myself has seen far too much in this world to consider herself lost," the mare grinned through her words, keeping the tone of pleasant conversation, but also mentally kicking herself for sounding like an idiot. Was it the thought of new company that had thrown her off her game? This stallion wasn't threatening or unapproachable (from what she could tell at first glance), yet the first few words out of her mouth had her babbling like a fool.

"What about you? It wouldn't be very friendly of me not to ask you if you were lost, now would it?" The mare's eyes sparkled as she spoke, a playful tone now very obvious in her voice. "Suppose I did know where I was, and you didn't? I'm Happiness, by the way....if we're talking about manners."

She may be rusty, but yeah. She could pretend she remembered how to flirt.
