In which two children have a fated meeting in the middle of a Haystack at the Harvest Moon Jubilee

        Gotta find a needle, gotta find a needle!

        Or at the very least, Mahmud's goal had been to make it look like he was trying to find a needle. In reality, the boy was shuffling through the golden strands to try and shove as many into his pockets as trollmanly possible! If he couldn't find this stupid tiny a** needle, then he'd just have to be satisfied finding a whole bunch of crap for his Ommy's hive instead!

        Hay was shoved in his pockets, in his pants (and quickly back out of those pants; oh god that was too itchy), and had he thought of it would have even shoved it where the moons didn't shine. Further and further he dug in, looking desperately for more places to stuff himself silly with grassy gold... and then he made a hard tug on something that wouldn't move.

        What? Was this what a needle was?

        For a moment he sat there, pondering, then tugged on the handful of hay a little harder, before seeing that the hay was black. Was hay usually black? Well no, no it wasn't but why would there be random black hay?

        Curious, he gave the cluster of hay one last tug, before staring at it closer and realizing... it... was... hair...

        ... oops?

      Kolako loved hay.

      She enjoyed its prickly hardness and the more she jumped around in it, the more it got caught in her wild hair, yellow tufts of hay standing out against the darker black of her natural hair. Hey, it looked pretty cool, though!! Maybe she could make a yellow dye in the future and and fix up her hair with it... Wait, wasn't she in the hay for a reason?? Oh, si! To get the aguja Her eyes squinted and Koko stuck her head in the hay, searching for any sort of grey glint... Until her hair was suddenly grabbed. Kolako flailed a little thinking it was just a mistake, and then the tug became a hard pull. Koko growled in warning, bringing out her sharp claws and reaching to slash at the other-- When there was suddenly another hard tug on her hair. "E-ey! Let go of my cabello!!" She yelped-- "No es yours!!" Her voice was a little whiny, but seriously, who could blame her?? If this troll didn't let go of her soon, she'd have to call Papi... Maybe he'd be able to help scare them away...
* aguja = needle
cabello = hair
no es = it's not

        For whatever reason, Mahmud had sat there for a dumb moment thinking "Hey, this hair isn't attached to anything!". Maybe he didn't want to deal with the fallout of accidentally touching another troll, or that he was so deep in his hay-gathering venture his brain wasn't quite catching his actions. Either way though, the result was the same: a high pitched voice screeching about... cabbage saying 'yo'? What was a cabello? Whatever it was she could have it!

        With a high pitched screech of his own, Mahmud let go of his fistful of locks, and scrambled back a bit, flailing his feet a bit as he did so, and kicking hay all over. " YOU CAN HAVE IT YOU CAN HAVE IT YOU CAN HAVE IT!" After a few moments of trying to catch his breath, the boy went from feeling scared to... well, angry. Upset. Who did this troll think they were?

        Giving an angry little huff, the boy parted the hay he had once grabbed gently, trying to avoid all the black locks he had grabbed before so he could get a look at the victim more. "Who even let you in here while I was in here?! Haven't you heard of waiting your turn?" Every square inch of his curly hair was filled with as much hay as Kolako's head had been, and really despite his grumpy demeanor... well... was really just a kid covered in straw.

      The moment the hair was let go, Kolako leapt back, facing the brownblood with a sharp glare and a lifted chin, back tense and body in a defensive stance. She watched him carefully, scanning him for any ill intentions-- But the kid was tiny, and well, didn't seem like he could actually put up much of a fight. Then again, she looked rather unassuming as well. It was possible he was putting up a front. Standing up straight, the kid watched him freak out with fascination-- Was he scared? Of her? Maybe her growl was actually getting better!!

      Or not. It seemed the brownblooded troll thought she was intruding in his private time inside!! But then again-- "I thought it was my turno!! Maybe you went in too early, you big malo!" She lashed, but before she could continue, the telltale signs of Papion rushing over rattled the ground, having heard his charges' scream of help and stopping very near the pen, glaring at Mahmud and baring his teeth. It was now that Koko calmed down, realizing how childish she sounded, not peaceful at all! She didn't want this to turn into an actual fight. But she was bothered at him grabbing her hair. Then again, he didn't even know she was there! Koko looked at Papi before he could intervene, raising a hand in peace before calming herself down. He was weak, and looked scared as well. She needed to fix this, as the stronger one. She was more mature!

      "It's okay though, no hay problema." She thrusted a hand in his face as a symbol of peace, giving him a wide grin. These were the necessary steps right? She was supposed to be nice. This was nice!

<3 HEY THERE HAHA SORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG

        No hay... problema? Like, no problem with the hay? Well obviously there was a problem with the hay, she was in it while he was trying to look for the needle! That big giant lusus behind her too seemed to think there was a problem, given the way he stared and growled (which in truth, was actually pretty frightening). Even Harpommy could see there was a big hay problema because she was cooing from SOMEWHERE behind him, he couldn't see.

        But before he could retort, there was a grey hand in his face. Mahmud gave a little jump in place before staring at the hand again, seeming to inspect it before shoving both of his own back into his pockets. Clearly they were of the same caste but...

        Even if both of them were kids, she was clearly older than he was. Given her stance and the wild look to her, she must be some sort of fighter. Her lusus was huge, and looked like he could give Harpommy a fight for her life. No, this wasn't someone he wanted to risk touching. Not one little bit.

        Despite this, it was still polite to say something right? "No... no hay problem. Sorry for pulling your cabbage low, I guess." The entire time, his eyes were glued to Kolako with a deep intensity unnecessary for this sort of interaction. "Are they okay? Your uh... hair?"

        Today was not going to be a day to fight for him or his mom. Hopefully.

      Kolako smiled widely, hand falling to her side unceremoniously as she giggled a little. While her anger was still prevalent, she brushed it off easily and ignored the blatant disregard to her handshake. He was doing better, even if it was just a guessing apology! "It's alright! Jajaja!" What the hell were cabbage lows? Whatever, she'd just keep smiling and take it like a joke or something. He might've been teasing her! Teasing was a thing friends did, right? "Yeah, yeah, I'm all good. Jejeje. Todo bien!" Kolako looked over toward Papion and motioned a light hand motion to calm his arched back, something that made him huff, glare at Mahmud, and pad away from the area, comfortably laying on his paws and watching the scene in case there were any more... altercations. Kolako glanced at him before looking over back at Mahmud and blinking at him blankly for a second, expression brightening. "Oh! Yeah! The needle!" Kolako continued to search for the impossible myth, having almost completely forgotten what had just happened, instead glancing at the hay and crossing her arms. "Since they let us in together, probablemente we can search together! How 'bout it? Okay, awesome!" She didn't even let him answer, instead, continuing in her search excitedly. There was a needle to find, and talking was a waste of time!!

        For a little while he didn't talk, concentrating on both keeping his fingers in the hay and keeping it out of Koko's hair. Now that he realized it, and thought about it more, her hair was pretty wild like his was. Having it pulled probably hurt a lot more than he initially thought. An apology was given but did it really take root? Was it a strong enough one for the harm he did? And for another thing...

        "Hey uh... girl?" Yeah. Totally the most polite term to call a person. "Hey girl, do you know what a needle looks like?" Admittedly he'd only ever heard of them, and had never seen one in person. Needles weren't important in construction or writing, either way. "Is it small? Why did they even throw it in here, if they wanted us to find this stupid thing..." With a grumble he kept digging through, fingers almost getting caught in her hair again but pulling back in time. "... Did you uh..." Oh god, how does one start a conversation with others? He didn't really WANT to but it felt necessary at this point. "What about this thing do you like so far? Like... do you just dig in this hay all day or do you do other stuff?". Boom, smooth, total cool operator.

      As Kolako searched through the bushels of hay, the female looked up at the other brownblood with curious eyes, anger forgotten, second chance given. "Girl? Jajaja! I'm Kolako, pero! But!! You can just call me Koko!" She exclaimed, before he finished his question and her eyes widened to match her open mouth. "Ah... I... don't! Actually!" She blinked. "I'm guessing it is small. Extremely small! That's why nadie-- no one's found it! And why we'll find it!! 'Cause we're chiquitos, super small!" Kolako smiled brightly. They definitely had the advantage!! Somehow!! Hearing his questions, the brownblood sat back a little, using her hands as a prop to keep herself up. "It's for fun! Diversión! This entire festival is for fun!" She smiled. "I like making mooncakes too! And theres a big community pot thingy where we'll all eat in the end! Quieres ver? Wanna see?" She asked excitedly, pushing herself up and holding out her hand. They could search for the needle all day, but if neither of them knew what it was, it was a lost cause. It was better to take him to eat some yummy mooncakes!

        Mahmud sat in silence for a short while, staring at the little girl's hand. Then back to her face, and then once more back to her hand. Why was she being so nice? "I'm... Mahmud. Call me Mahmud, or whatever you like." Why was he giving her his name?

        Koko as she was called... he pulled on her hair, called her a cabbage-low (a word association he was still trying to solve to this very moment), and refused to touch her. Yet at the same time she was still smiling, still friendly, still willing to come play with him. Why?

        With a gulp and a deep breath, the boy reached forward and took Koko's hand, standing up and out of the hay as it stuck out every which way in his hair. "I like the mooncakes the most. I like the community pot a lot. Lets go."

        He wasn't sure if Koko could realize what a big step this had been for him, but in the background his own mother was cooing excitedly and hopping. Now she decided to make herself closer to Papion, tweeting up a storm with the other lusus. No doubt she was saying something embaressing about him and his... unwillingness to play with others, and the thought of being stared at made him drop Koko's hand again once she stood. Yet he didn't run anywhere, or scream this time.

        If Harpommy was close, it was worth giving being nice a shot, right? The Lunar Festival only came once a year.

        "C'mon, lets go!" As if he was out of practice somehow, the little boy cracked an awkward grin at Kolako, putting his arms behind his back as he did so. "Before the good mooncakes are gone!"

        Two moons the color of festival lights hung overhead as two children, close in hue and in company, ran and tore up the festival circuit that night. Mooncakes were had, creatures were mud wrestled, and community pots were... well, filled with questionable materials. Overall though, the night was one of the best Mahmud could think of having in a long time. Kolako was nice, she was excitable, and while he wasn't sure if he'd call her a friend...

        ... he sure wouldn't call her a stranger anymore.
