Since the night when a monster had appeared seemingly out of nowhere, and then a glowing girl showed up and destroyed it with light and dust, just like a fairy tale hero, Alexa had been on the lookout for magic. She paid attention when people talked about the terrorists, although she never shared her own story. Most people talked about weird lights and stuff in the distance, not about being chased by messed up tigers. They’d think she was crazy. Well, her family might believe her, but then they’d never let her go out by herself ever again.

And that would pretty much ruin her plan.

Mostly she was just keeping her eyes open, especially those times when she was out by herself in the evening, walking the few blocks to the store to pick up milk, or eggs, or candy, which was where she had been before. Sometimes, she walked through the alleyways instead of on the sidewalk. It seemed like cool things had a better chance of hiding there. So far, she hadn’t had any luck finding them, though.

That was where she was tonight. She was walking through a trash area where two of the alleys came to a T and three dumpsters were lined up. This was where she usually turned back out towards the street, but today she stopped. Something was moving behind the one dumpster, something way bigger than those gross alley cats. Also, it was possibly something even grosser. It always smelled bad here, but today Alexa had to pull her jacket over her face just to stop herself from gagging. A nose appeared from behind the dumpster, then red eyes, then the rest of it. It was definitely a monster. Alexa’s jaw dropped behind her makeshift mask. It could kinda be called a rat, but it was three feet tall and had what looked like burst sores on its back that were leaking a gut-wrenchingly nasty dull green ooze.

Eww. It didn’t even look that fierce, just really gross, but whatever- heros had to start somewhere. She didn’t have a fancy weapon, either, but she did have a gallon of milk, which she hurled at the rat, feeling pretty heroic until it landed with a not particularly fierce splat about a foot in front of the creature. The rat turned to look directly at Alexa. The fear finally started to kick in. She took a step back.

This was probably bad.

Youma, he found, were mostly receptive to his orders as a general.

They were not, however, always terribly smart about it.

In a test of those youma that roamed across his path, he required of each of them to fetch him either one starseed or one energy orb. Some simply stared at him dully, others scoffed, and others still simply offered no reaction at all, but the lot of them typically put out the effort to accomplish the task. Sometimes he tailed them; one particular creature looked much like a lion and stalked its prey similarly, but in accidentally killing the civilian, Umber decided that the creature was no longer worth considering. Most of the rest brought back trash - yard globes of similar dimensions to an energy orb, or children's baubles that resembled starseeds. Some brought back the requested items, though he was uncertain if the youma itself completed the work.

Tonight he elected to only order youma that he could follow. A fetid, plague-ridden, overgrown rat came to his attention early in the evening, and he gave the intended order. He followed the creature by rooftop where it vastly preferred the ground level, and the general witnessed it combing any trash can it could find. Initially he suspected that the rat was looking for a suggestion of an energy orb or a starseed, but when its muzzle sunk beyond the rim of the trash can, he imagined it had simply distracted itself with particularly delectable waste.

So Umber settled into a crouch to wait. He continued to observe the youma, it continued to eat, and then a nondescript pop followed by a splash caught his attention. Someone had, evidently, tossed a milk jug at the creature. Further observation confirmed that a young girl with bizarre hair had thrown the jug, and was now the target of the youma's aggressions. Perhaps now he would discover if the youma was capable of fulfilling his task.

Umber crept along the roofline, carefully at first, for a better view. One ring from the end of his split cape scraped across the parapet and slipped off entirely, spoiling his cover. It wouldn't matter; even if the girl spotted him, her eyes would be on the wrong subject, for the rat started into a roaring leap at her with claws and fangs bared.

Yep, this was definitely bad.

Alexa registered noise from above and something whizzing past her head, but she didn't exactly have time to give it her full attention. The rat was was leaping towards her, fast, all pointy bits and dizzying smell, looking like a proper monster. She let out a horror movie scream that burned her vocal chords and in retrospect probably wasn't even necessary. Cheerleading had given her good reflexes, and she managed to dart out of the way.

It didn't mean she was safe or anything. She backed away, no longer super interested in fighting. She had learned her lesson for the day- to not fail at combat, you needed more than just milk and determination. She wanted to leave and come back with a knife or something. The rat, however, was not interested in letting her walk away. It lunged again. She screamed again, this time slightly less dramatically, and mostly succeeded in dodging again, although one of the claws ended up raking her ankle, which caused another shriek. Panting, she wondered how long it would take one of the knights to show up and save her. (That was obviously what was going to happen if she failed at fighting this thing.) She didn't really want to be saved, though. The monster was too much for her and she knew it, but she didn't want it to be. Her goal of being a hero hadn't changed.

So, coming back better prepared wasn't an option, and being saved was a last resort. That left trying to fight. She had ended up beside one of the dumpsters, were someone had left a length of PVC pipe. It was taller than she was and too light to really be an effective weapon, but it was what was available. She grabbed it, and the next time the rat came at her, she tried to jam it into its mouth.

Umber stood tall from his perch over the altercation. He did not expect this stranger to last long against a youma of this size, and yet he remained transfixed. She exhibited desirable reflexes, at least, for how she dodged the telegraphed responses of the youma. And, evidently, she had enough wits about her to look for a better approach to defeating it. She could've run easily - the alley stood open at both ends - but she hardly spared a glance in its direction. Would she fight it, then? Likely. Would she succeed? Perhaps not, but he now knew control over that.

He could corrupt her, simply enough.

And yet the rat continued its ritualistic assault, continually lunging at the girl with fangs and claws bared. He found the youma woefully inept at comment for this fact alone - if it could not vary its assault on something with significant intelligence, then it was nothing beyond a distraction. Any senshi could dispatch it without a second thought and spare the rest of their focus for the Negaverse. No, of either fighter here, the girl held far more promise - even if she lacked the strength and ability to retaliate effectively.

Finally the general stepped off the parapet and landed with a slight bend of knee. Straightening, he held out a hand to the youma in silent command. It obeyed - for now.

"You don't need to kill it." It was unclear to which individual he spoke.

With a turn of head, his pale eyes settled on the teenager with PVC piping still brandished. Sometimes it looked like a club, and sometimes like a javelin. She held enough sense about her to repurpose her attacks - unlike the rat youma. "I could give you power that safeguards you from their attacks. If you do as required, you can have mastery over it." To demonstrate, he called the monstrous, pustule-laden rat to heel at his side. "What do you say?"

In truth, that was the most convincing that Umber ever managed toward another person for the sake of corruption. He was uncertain if any of his words held merit - or if he could have a career of convincing others for the positives of the Negaverse. Likely that vein of efficiency fell into the hands of his roommate more than he. But the offer was given, and refusal could be dealt with easily enough.

Now she was awkwardly blocking more than actually dodging, and attempting to attack when she could. Some of her blows hit, but although the rat wasn't that fast, it seemed pretty tough. It didn't look hurt, and more importantly, it didn't look at all tired even though she was already panting. Then, she heard a voice.

"It's okay," she replied. "I got this! You can go save someone else." Now that she wasn't busy trying not to die, she brought the pipe up in two hands and brought it down as hard as she could... straight into the dirt. This time, the monster was the one to jump out of the way at the last second. It let out a low, squeaky growl. Scowling at her failed finishing blow, she glanced up, eyes pleading despite her words. Maybe she did need some help.

The guy in front of her didn't look at all like the knight she'd seen before. There were no sparkles, but he wasn't normal, either. He was all feathers, and he blended into the shadows, and he had a cape. She liked it. The way he was talking, though... it was weird. Very calm. She liked that, too, even though it was kinda confusing. And then, as if that wasn't enough, he summoned the monster to him.

Magic.

Her eyes lit up and her jaw dropped. "Woah!" She took a step forward and stared at them, eyes flicking back and forth between the monster and the guy for several full seconds before her mind caught up. "That was so cool! I don't think that thing would be a very good pet, though. It's kinda a monster. Even if it doesn't wanna eat you, it smells really bad."

Save someone else? Umber's brow furrowed. He lacked the hero complex to consider his efforts as 'saving' anyone - moreover, his concerns were paid to recruitment and survival over any interest in benefitting another's life. But if this girl wanted to see him as a savior regardless, Umber found no reason to expend the effort on correcting her.

Umber walked from the temporarily halted rat to approach the girl. "You're right, it wouldn't make a very good pet." As she pointed out, the youma lost its element of surprise through olfactory detection - any covert activities would meet their end with this creature around. Secondly, as the girl demonstrated, the rat youma proved easy to fight off and attacked in a predictable pattern. Thirdly, the youma failed to procure for him a starseed or energy orb as asked, which led Umber to believe that it either lacked the sense to perform the task or simply could not muster the skills. He expected a combination of both, and if the girl was perceptive enough to pick out at least one of its faults...

Why not corrupt her?

"It wouldn't try to eat me because I stand above it as a General of the Negaverse." He continued to walk toward the girl. "You have qualities that the Negaverse seeks in its recruits. "Tenacity," he started, his index finger touching one of the opposite hand, "adaptiveness under duress, and perception. We could use these.

"It isn't a question of giving the power to more needful people. The Negaverse could use your help."

The Negaverse? She had no idea what that was, but it sounded cool, and if he was saying it, it probably had something to do with magic stuff. Recruits, however, she understood perfectly, and power, while kinda vague, was definitely interesting. She was starting to put the pieces together.

"So... you want me to be... like you?" she asked, trying and utterly failing not to get her hopes up too much. Without really thinking about it, even, she was bouncing up and down onto her toes, with her hands gently clasped in front of her, and her mouth slowly splitting into a grin. "Like... magic?" She almost whispered that, like it was too much to ask. Saving people would be cool and all, but the magic was really what she was in this for.

The compliments just made her smile even more. She wasn't the type to get flustered over positive feedback, and hearing that the Negaverse, whatever it was, needed her, she nodded immediately. "Ok. Yeah." The rat took a step towards them from where the guy had left it, interrupting Alexa's thoughts. She stepped back. "Not that, though! Like, even controlling it or whatever- I don't want to. Please." Like, eww. No. Even if it was magic, it no longer was that interesting to her, just really gross and dangerous. The guy was much more fascinating. Maybe she shouldn't be trusting him like this moments after she'd proven how horrible she was at defending herself, but she couldn't help herself. Up close, she could see that there were markings on his face. They were really pretty, without being girly or anything. She wondered if that was part of the Negaverse thing. Yeah, she was way too curious to walk away now.

The girl started to comprehend his position. "Correct. Magic." He did not cease his approach, even as he listened to her working through the offer he presented. She obviously sounded averse to youma, though he doubted they would matter much to her throughout her lieutenancy. If a lack of youma reinforced her tenacity, then why deny her that? Perhaps they could nurture an obedience in her that reached a SpecOps level if he was careful about it.

With a last glance back at the rat youma, he waved his arm to dismiss it to the realm of the Rift. Its presence here was no longer needed, and he expected it to obey a general's command - even if lacking a bond. "You'll want to stand with your back to the wall.

"There are some magics that are difficult to get used to. Ours is one of them." Umber reached the girl's position at his steady gait, eyed her for signs of fear or apprehension, then mentally committed to the task. He would attempt it, both because she showed fearlessness and she showed the determination needed to see a battle through. While young, that entailed further trainability than someone of his age. While developing her mind, they could shape her beliefs to something best suited for Metallia. And lastly, the mention of magic confirmed a lack of skepticism - she was an ideal choice, to which he should've credited the youma, but the creature found no favor with him.

Umber loosed a slow breath while he closed his eyes and called to the surface a thin layer of chaotic energy. It melded into a blackened glove over his left hand, and with the chaos writhing in his skin, his fingers splayed outward. "Are you ready?" He asked, though he opted against waiting for an answer - soon his hand met cloth, then skin, then flesh, then bone, then the secondary dimensional hold where the starseed floated unperturbed.

Chaotically-laced fingers found the gem immediately, and from his hand burst forth the energy to overwhelm its serenity. He cared not if she shrieked, objected, or kicked. It wouldn't matter shortly. Even if exhausted, he would know the personal and private success of adding to the ranks of the Negaverse.

This girl would be his first.

"Okay," she repeated, and she took a few steps backwards, towards the wall, and then rested her shoulder blades against the bricks. If Umber was really paying attention, there was a hint of nervousness in the way her eyebrows inched together, because even if she was pointedly not thinking about it, there was something threatening about the whole thing, with the dark alley, someone she maybe shouldn't be trusting, and having almost died a few seconds ago. Her eyes were still shining, though. She was still excited, and hopeful. She still really wanted magic. Waiting for him to walk over to her was excruciating, but she stayed still and silent, which was surprising considering it was her, but she didn't want to do anything that would mess this up.

Her eyes widened a bit as his hand went black, and further when he put his hand inside her chest. She tried to tell herself that that was kind of cool, too, but mostly it wasn't. It was weird, and wrong, and kinda painful, and she didn't like it, but she didn't have time to complain or even think about it too much, because a moment later things had gone from being moderately uncomfortable to the agony of something ripping her apart from the inside. She didn't even realize she was screaming, but she was, and it didn’t take long for tears to start streaming down her face. The wall did a good job of keeping her in place. She squirmed a bit reflexively but it wasn’t really strong or purposeful enough to count as struggling, and even if it had been she had no hope of getting away.

After what seemed like forever, it was over.

“Ow,” she mumbled, and since she didn’t feel like meeting his gaze quite yet, she looked down and found that her sweater and skirt had been replaced by a jacket and boots and gloves made of sleek black fabric. There were ruffles, too, and they were cute pink ones. That seemed promising. Thinking about it for a moment, she decided that she felt stronger. Despite what had just happened, and the dull ache that remained in her chest, she found herself grinning. She looked up. “Ahh, this is great! You’re so cool! Thank you so much,” she said, and since it had happened and that meant things were much less stressful, she threw herself at him for a hug with speed that surprised her for a second.

With added pulses of chaos, the girl responded in a less and less composed manner. Her facial features contorted, then she screamed wretchedly, and finally tears streamed where none had come before. Umber witnessed all of the changes unfeelingly; he was less interested in the response to chaotic influence than he was in the results. She would be a lieutenant, and whether she would accept this burden or not was now irrelevant. Whether she liked it or not was irrelevant.

In Umber's mind, the only worthy variable was her effectiveness as an officer.

So when he drained himself of most of his energy and withdrew a weary hand from her chest he looked upon a lieutenant made up in couture style that he personally didn't understand or appreciate. The skull over the bow looked much too stylized for his liking, and he didn't fully comprehend its placement over the bow. Still, he had a surfeit of questions concerning his own uniform, so perhaps it was best not to inquire over hers. If it allowed her to slip within crowds unnoticed and perform her duties accordingly, then he would accept it. Ultimately, this new dress suited her - though he knew not why or how.

"It does hurt," he conceded in an attempt to commiserate with her. "But the pain will wear off in hours. Don't exert yourself for the rest of the day, Lieutenan-" He paused with the sudden show of arms around his shoulders. While Umber minded the gesture not at all, he wondered why she would do so after he caused her such pain. Carefully the general patted her on the back to return her touch. She smelled, faintly, of sweet.

"There are some facts you need to know right now. You're a Lieutenant of the Negaverse now, and you can access this form simply by concentrating and recalling it. Do not do this in public areas - compromising your identity is lethal. And lastly, you need a codename in this form. Protecting your identity is paramount in this war. Our codenames come from minerals. You can pick a name for yourself, or I can pick one for you. It is your choice." Xenotime allowed him no choice for his own, but that didn't mean that this new Lieutenant should be subject to the same principles. Umber saw no particular attachment to the naming convention.

Her knees wavered a little, so she let go of him and leaned back against the wall, sliding down it until she was sitting cross-legged in the dirt. She still looked up bright eyed and still listened eagerly, but the whole ordeal had put a bit of a dent in her enthusiasm. Maybe that was for the best, though. Now she could learn things instead of just bouncing around the alley.

"I have a secret identity? I look different?" She asked, reaching up to examine her face. There was no mask or anything, and the structure seemed pretty familiar. Her bangs were there, too, and were holding their curl surprisingly well. She did find one new thing, the headband, which she took off and admired. The bow was super cute, even if the skull was kinda... different. "But no public places. Okay. That shouldn't be too hard, and codenames... uh..."

That was another thing that was really cool, straight out of a superhero movie. She concentrated for a second as she put the headband back on. "Diamond? ...no. Nope. Not Diamond, actually. I don't need people thinking I'm twelve." It was an easy enough assumption to make without that kind of name. She was five foot even and still had round cheeks. The only things that were coming to mind were those kind of gem names, though. "I don't really know that many minerals. We were supposed to do some geology in science last year, but we ran out of time for it. I guess you should pick, unless there's a list or something I can look at." He hadn't disappointed her with the whole magic thing, so she trusted him with the name.

"By the way, what's the Negaverse? You keep talking about it, but you never really said." She was part of it, apparently, which was awesome and was what mattered, but now she wanted to know.

"It's hard to explain. Magic makes you look different to everyone else." Looking down toward her felt unnecessarily imposing, so he crouched when she sank to her position. Balancing with no knee on the ground came with ease, though he looked mildly perturbed when the metal rings of his cape dragged against the ground.

Hands sank between his thighs and folded loosely. He closed his eyes momentarily to call up minerals. Would sharing information about his personal life offer her a better connection to the Negaverse while he trawled for a name? He'd take the chance - especially if it promised him any kind of success. "My family had an old naming convention in place. We were all named after types of rock, so I'm familiar with some minerals." Opening his eyes, he looked over her uniform for characteristics consistent with the minerals he knew. The pink looked promising, but black left no outlets as a standard Negaverse color. "Potassium Chloride. It's a kind of salt, but it can come in an orange to red that's similar to your uniform." Similar was relative - given he hadn't seen any hot pink minerals in some time, it was the closest he could get.

"But we can't call you Salt, that's too vague. Sylvite, I think it's called." It sounded right. Naming convention within the Negaverse urged him to brush up on names in case he corrupted other officers, which finally pulled through in times like these. "Sylvite" looked a fresh-faced recruit, excitable and worthy of training. He did not want to forestall her with a lack of name.

"The Negaverse is Earth's military. It is global, but secretive. Our mission is to protect against the terrorists invading from extraterrestrial locations and serve the queen of our forces, Metallia." He personally never figured out the need for a queen in a military hierarchy, but refrained from questioning it. Laurelite was the branch between traditional military convention to monarchic leadership, and from there, Metallia reigned supreme. "To be brief, there are opposing forces called senshi, and their supporters called knights that started opposing our forces for variable reasons. However, these entities are not originally from earth and have destroyed their original planets. We are to prevent that from happening to earth.

"We are given tools to do this - like the rat creature you fought, weapons, and magical abilities. Teleportation. The ability to lethally counter an opponent quickly and painlessly. The ability to draw energy from other sources to fuel and perpetuate our forces.

"You will want to know where you fit into this picture." Umber shirked his falconer's glove and flexed his fingers. He felt drained from the event, even if he hadn't fought beforehand. "As a lieutenant, your primary goals will be to familiarize yourself with the workings of the Negaverse and begin training for combat. You will be given goals that will challenge you, along with support to ensure that you can reach those goals. For now, you will serve under me as a subordinate. You can call me at any time if you have questions or need assistance." A notebook was retrieved from his back pocket then, and he removed the pen from its spiral with his left hand. Opening to a new page, he wrote out ten numbers and tore the page to hand to the new officer.

After a momentary pause, he called to hand a deep violet crystal of prismatic shape. "Take this, too. It's like a two-way radio. There are no buttons, but if you can imagine broadcasting a message to me, it will use some of your energy to do that. It's better used only in emergencies.

"This is a lot to take in," he admitted sympathetically.

She nodded at the explanation of the identity magic, even though she didn't really understand. Of course, she didn't understand hands going through chests or how the rat had been alive or how her fancy new clothes had gotten on her body, but it was magic. That was the point, or at least that was what made it so interesting.

It seemed like the guy was much chattier now that he'd... changed her. That was good. His earlier silence had made her very uncomfortable. "You're named after a rock? That's cool... but why? Rocks aren't, like... that interesting. I don't think I'm named after anything. My name means protector or something." This new name would be a rock, but it would be a mineral, not something boring. The pink salt he finally suggested sounded both interesting and vaguely familiar. "Sylvite," she repeated, trying out the sound of it. "Yeah... I like that." It was unique without but easy to say and remember, and cute without being ridiculous.

Then, Sylvite tried to listen to him talk about the Negaverse. It wasn't easy. There was still a dull ache in her chest, and the scratch on her foot from the rat was throbbing, and the adrenaline that had been giving her energy through all of this was starting to fade, especially now that she was sitting down. She slumped further, leaning her head against the wall. She was pretty sure she understood the big picture, though. There were space invaders trying to kill the planet and they needed to stop them. The details beyond that were a bit fuzzy. She didn't question any of it. She had finished questioning things when the first monster had shown up. "So... I'm a soldier?" she asked. The excitement in her voice that had been there with the name and the magic wasn't there for this, but she didn't sound opposed to the idea, necessarily. It shouldn't have been a surprise. She'd been given the magic for trying to fight, after all, but military sounded so... serious. "I don't know if I'll be a good soldier, but I'll try. You've been super nice, I don't want to be a disappointment or anything." Also, the magic was what she'd been looking for, but if she could use it to protect Earth, that would be icing on the cake.

She accepted his phone number and held onto it awkwardly. There were no pockets in her new outfit. She took the crystal in her other hand and sat up a bit straighter to look at it. It was really pretty. That was as deep as her thoughts on the matter were going at the moment. "It's a lot, but I'll figure it out," she said, which was true. She was good at figuring things out. Maybe not right now, though. Right now she needed to... sleep or something.

"I still don't know your name."

"Yes, my civilian name is Shale. It's... A long story. I'm not from the city. My upbringing is different from yours." He understood the usefulness in a name that meant protector, but he wondered if most families in these parts chose their children's names as projections about who they were supposed to be. What if Sylvite grew up and, unfortunately, fit nothing about the declaration of 'protector'? That would render her name a misnomer. Would other people then go to her, knowing what her name means, and expect protection? It wasn't terribly far from his own naming convention, so he could see it happening.

The way Sylvite slumped left him concerned, and reminded him of his own tired energy deficits. They both likely needed rest before any real conversation could ensue. "Yes, you're a soldier. You don't need to worry about whether you'll be good at it." She would have ample time in training to learn to be good at it if she found herself struggling in the beginning. As his first lieutenant, Umber imagined he would either be training her himself or sending her to other captains to learn what she could from them. Sylvite had a great deal of information she needed to digest in her lieutenancy, and he imagined that disseminating it all at once was a terrible idea. Thinking back on it, Umber doubted that he himself would have processed everything about the Negaverse if Xenotime explained the entirety of it in the woods.

His train of thought departed when Sylvite pointed out that his name remained a mystery. Umber blinked a few times; how did he forget? "Umber. General. Sp-..." No, branches aren't useful information right now. "You can just call me Umber.

"I can get you home, but I need to know where you live." Taking her on a piggyback ride through the city sounded like the most energy-efficient way to take her to her living space, but teleportation assured more safety. Allowing her to walk home unpowered was rather dangerous, but most energy efficient for himself. Piggybacking her through the city promised a chance of encountering the enemy as well.

Choices.

She wanted to know more about his past. It sounded really interesting, especially since he sounded American, but made it seem like he was from somewhere far away... but if she was going to ask about something right now, it was going to be this magic war, and it seemed like even that was going to have to wait. It was good that he was her superior, so she'd be reporting to him and maybe training with him. She could ask about it later, if she remembered.

At least he had a name, now. That made him a little less mysterious. "Umber," she repeated. "Okay. My other name's Alexa, in case you were wondering. Alexa Dewey." It wasn't the best, as far as introductions went, but after everything that had just happened, names didn't seem that important. "I don't mind telling you where I live, just don't stalk me or anything, okay? It's 29883 Williamson Street, Apartment C. That street out there's Ridgley, Williamson is the next one over. Then it's maybe half a mile that way." She tilted her head left. This time, it didn't even occur to her that she should maybe be more cautious with alleyway strangers. She wasn't quite as weak as she looked. Even though she was tired and in a lot more pain than she was used to, she could definitely stand up, probably walk, and maybe get home. Did she want to, though? Absolutely not, if he could help her get home, it would be very appreciated. Otherwise, she was just going to sit here for at least a few more minutes.
