Doormat.

That's what her step sister always called her. Frankly she was pretty sure that was what everyone called her behind her back. Satine de LaSalles was but a girl of seventeen and already she knew the how far being nice in the world got you.

"No where, that's where." Satine muttered as she took a seat on a bench outside the dog park where her step mother's prized 'herd' of tea cup yorkies ran. Well, herd might have been a bit of an overstatement as there was only five but when they ran through the estate, it sounded like a herd of cattle. In her hands though was her tablet as she quickly flipped through yet another presentation. Crystal seemed keen on group work lately and everyone wanted to be her partner...

Because she would do all the work if you gave a sad enough excuse. "People will walk all over you no matter what you do. At least this way I keep my grades up..." Satine tried to say but her hands only began to shake. She was frustrated...tired with it all.

Grabbing the bag next to her, she decided the park was secure enough...she could take a walk. No one would care if she didn't come back. No, they would care. They could care that their dogs didn't get home in time for supper or their paper wasn't finished or book report not done or dress laid out...

"Some family..."

Remarque had been out doing a general patrol—or, at least, his version of one. He had been slacking when it came to gathering energy so he had taken a few wraiths with him and let them loose on a group of civilians.

Once, he'd thought it simplest to gather energy from the homeless, the drunk. They were ideal targets—no one would miss them. But he never killed. Never took all of their energy. Just enough.

And then, when he'd wanted a rush, he'd targeted back alleyways. Suspicious thugs, gang members, drug dealers. People who were capable of fighting. People who usually had interesting things in their pockets. Not that he'd ever taken anything but the cash, but it was still interesting to see.

Nowadays, he'd found a far more lucrative way to gather energy.

In the darkness of movie theaters, no one could see what you were up to. He could enter incognito, power up, let the wraiths run through and drain energy and be out of there before anyone suspected a thing. It was perfect. There were almost always enough people that no one would notice a little bit gone.

That had been his go-to for the night; he'd filled up all his wraiths and then deliberated between heading home or enjoying the weather.

Enjoying the weather—and his old haunts—won out.

Only a few people were out, but only one did he get close enough to hear what she was mumbling to herself. Feeling social and still riding off the high of a very successful energy drain, he spoke from behind her; "Doesn't sound like a very fine family from here."

The voice behind her made Satine nearly jump out of her skin. She tensed from head to toe before her head managed to jerk around and eye the source of the voice.

The first order of business was to hold her own laughter in. Satine honestly had to catch herself from going into shock at the attire this male wore. Certainly it was not Halloween!

"I'm sorry Sir but I was not addressing you." Satine spoke, as level as she could manage though still trying not to crack a smile. Oh it was hard. Proper manners...do not speak unless spoken to. Second, do not laugh at someone you just met.

Third, remember who your family is an always represent them well.

With a long inhale, Satine finally managed to force her calm nature back over her face. "But I guess fine is in the eye of the beholder."

Remarque glanced over at her and seemed amused; a smile twitched onto his lips. "Oh? And here I was, thinking I'd made a new friend. My little heart is all broken, now."

He was insincere, but he spoke in jest.

Still, he shrugged. "Everyone has family trouble of one sort or another. If you need a pair of ears while you figure things out, I'd volunteer. I don't have much else going on tonight. If you wanted company," he shrugged.

"…You could find worse than me."

He was not shy in approaching, and he had long-since gotten over the odd appearance of his uniform.

"Besides," he continued. "It's dangerous out. I'd hate for a nice young woman like you to wind up in the belly of some monster."

Satine caught herself raising an eyebrow the the clearly sarcastic nature of his response. He was a strange one alright. Most would clearly take her comments as a shoo, go away, message but he stayed and was poking fun at her.

So she wouldn't admit it but it amused her. No one dared do it in such a nice way normally.

A sigh and Satine shook her head. "Sadly you speak the truth." Looking away from him, she lifted a hand and ran it through her hair. "Though some days the belly of a monster is welcomed. Better than staring into the head of a demon."

Strange. Satine found it easy to just...talk to this man. "Oddly enough for all the so called talk of monsters running around this city, I have yet to ever seen one not in human skin. But with those, who needs real creatures of nightmares."

"Never seen anything that looked like a monster? I suppose you're lucky for that."

Of course, he'd never seen one before the Surrounding had plucked him up and trapped him up there.

But that was years ago, and now he wondered how he'd ever been so blind. They were all around, and all it took was the knowledge that they were there—and suddenly you saw them everywhere.

"They're ugly things. Though, I suppose it gives you the benefit of knowing what you're supposed to be fighting. People," he shrugged. "They're tricky. You can't tell who's good an who's bad. Well, maybe you can't, but I suppose I have a bit of an advantage. I look at you and I see…"

He gave her a quick look over and then continued, "Potential. But then, I suppose anyone who doesn't scream and run from something outside of the ordinary has something special about them. Tell me. If I told you that there were monsters--real ones...Would you believe me?"

Satine was clearly listening. The way this man put it made things sound...convincing. As if he had seen more than he let on and experienced things beyond what she knew. But that was silly...

"We live in the world when if you expect the mundane, you will be disappointed. However, in the case of monsters, I would ask you to define what you consider 'real ones'. Vampires and Werewolves? Frankenstien's monster? Nessy? If you are going to tell me they are real then I do believe I must excuse myself."

Eyes flashed towards the man. "But clearly you are fighting something. Otherwise you would not have said so."

Remarque watched her still, amused, sly half grin on his face. "I've never met a werewolf, but I'm pretty sure I've met vampires. In a sense. Not like in the books or movies. No, those are Hollywood monsters. I mean real monsters. The things you should really be afraid of. The things that pluck you into the darkness in the middle of the night. The things that whisk you away, never to be found again. Things that turn you into a monster, and there's nothing you can do about it."

He shifted positions, still watching her closely.

"What if I told you they were real, and I could prove it? …And that I could show you how to fight them?"

She was a civilian, so far as he could tell. But the only way to get her into Mirrorspace to see if she was a senshi was if she came willingly. He could play the part, usually, but it was always hard to tell which civilians would want to join him.

Even harder to tell which civilians were worth the trouble—especially when there wasn't a cat around.
