Lorimer picked his way through the forest, not bothering to pay attention to his surroundings. It had been a long few weeks. After his mate perished, he had returned to his brother's protective care. It had taken Lori a long time to claw his way out of depression, and even that was done more to reassure his brother than because he had any real will to live. He ached for his lost mate, but he still loved his brother, and Kyad did not deserve to feel the pain that Lori was suffering. After so long, Lori began to grow strong enough to smile once more, though it was a false smile. The hope was, if he smiled often enough, eventually it would become real. And failing that, he would find a suitable mate for Kyad to protect then go off and join his lost mate... He was so wrapped up in these thoughts that he didn't notice any dangers lurking nearby...

Bardess Ookami
Liver! He could smell it. It didn't smell like fear, it smelled like sad. But he could make it smell like fear. He liked fear soaked livers. No one was fooled, he liked livers. Fear just made them tastier. LIVERS, though, LIVERS! HE trotted towards the scent. Soq liver and feathers. Feathers were annoying, they got in the way of the liver. But Soq liver was special. Was delicious. LIVER!!!! He crept up on his prey licking his teeth hungrily. He jumped out from in front of him. He wanted the fear, wanted the chase, wanted the LIVER!

Divena
When something suddenly lunged at him, Lori did the only logical thing a fellow could do. Well, only logical thing a fellow who had spent weeks with his self defense obsessed brother would do. He let loose a high pitched yelp and reared up, slashing at the air with his talons in a reflexive gesture of warning. At the last second, it occurred to him that it might be his brother, jumping out to startled him, though that was out of character for Kyad. Not that it mattered. He didn't have Kyad's control. He couldn't pull back the attack even if he wanted to.

Bardess Ookami
The claws raked his forelimbs, and Ashvay snarled. The ones that fought back often tasted the best. Well... the ones of those that he could catch. He'd catch this one. He snarled at the other Soq. "LIVER!" was the word that went with the sound. The only word that truly mattered. He snapped his sharpened teeth at the neck of the other. It was no fun if he didn't run. The liver wouldn't get to the right saturation of fear and adrenaline. The liver needed to be tender! It needed to be in his mouth! LIVER!

Divena
"Holy..." Lori gasped when the... whatever it was... snapped at him. He managed to scramble back to avoid having his neck ripped out, though he felt the pain as his skin was grazed. He stumbled back and spun in place, nearly tripping over his own ankles as he struggled to do the TRULY sensible thing and RUN AWAY. What the blazes was that thing? A skinwalker? A monster? All he had really processed was the word "liver" and teeth. Lots of really sharp teeth...

Bardess Ookami
YES! Ashvay lunged, his teeth grasping the rump of the other, catching the tail, then losing it. That was fine. The chase made the liver tastier. The chase made him all the hungrier. "LIVER" he snarled, lunging again.

Divena
"YEWOCH!" Lori yelped when he felt his tail grasped. He put on another burst of speed, darting between two trees. He spared a second to glance behind him, incredulously. Had that thing seriously just ripped out a few of his curls? His precious, beautiful, poor, victimized curls?! Were the spirits punishing him? What the blazes?!

Bardess Ookami
Ashvay spat out the curls, not caring for the hair that wrapped around his teeth. Note to self, no more curls, just liver! LIVER! HE lunged, striking at the other's rump, teeth closed this time. He had to get along side him, but couldn't yet. But he could smell the fear, the sweat, the liver. Oh how good the liver smelled.... Liver....

Divena
Lori cursed as the vicious monster sank its teeth into his rump. "Seriously?!" he snarled, kicking back with both his back hooves. "GET OFF! GET OFF! GETOFF!" This day was seriously not going his way. In the distant part of his mind that managed to watch everything objectively, he realized that this was the perfect opportunity for him to lay down and die. But that would have just left Kyad in exactly the same position that Lori had been when he found his lost mate... and, he realized with a shock, that he didn't want to die. The urge to fight, to survive was too strong. Angerly, he kicked again. It was all Kyad's fault! If it weren't for his twin, he wouldn't want to fight so hard....

Ashvay snarled, stumbling back from the double blow that bloodied his nose. He staggered a moment, giving his prey a bit of lead as he cleared his head and licked the blood that was flowing down his lips. Delicious, but not as good as Liver. He lunged forward, giving chase once again.

Divena
Lori took advantage of the distraction to run as fast as he could. The wind blew back his curls so forcefully that they almost straightened out. Almost. His heart was racing in his chest, so hard that it felt like it was going to pop out. For all that he was putting up a good struggle, he was not a fighter. He had always been a lover. His brother was the fighter, and it was to his brother that he was heading. He wheezed in an extra lungful of air and started shouting as loud as he could, "KYAD! KYAD! KYAD! GYAH!" he jumped over a log "KYAD! KYAD! KYAD!" Pride was not a strong emotion within the pink stallion.

Bardess Ookami
There were things in this world Kyad could not ignore. His brother screaming for help? Very much at the top of that list. There was no hesitation. Kyad dropped what he was doing, leaving it forgotten in the grass as he thundered towards hos brother, then past, placing himself between the attacker and the prey. He snarled at the fool who dared to hurt his twin.

"TWO LIVERS!" Ashvay cried happily, his eyes wide with the thought of two Soq livers. That he was out numbered never occurred to him as he tried to dash past Kyad to get to the Soq who smelled of fear and sweat. Watching him eat that one would give the other the fear scent.

When Ashvay's mind is on liver, he's not terribly bright. Ashvay is always thinking about liver. He was taken by surprise when the gold Soq slammed into his side, ramming him into a tree. He snarled and stood, too stupid by far to stay down. He licked his teeth as he panted. He wanted those Livers! LIVER!

Divena
Lori kept running, going a full six body lengths forward before he realized Kyad had appeared. He skidded to a halt, lost his balance, and crashed rather ungracefully into a tree. For a second, he just lay there, panting and wheezing as he tried to catch his breath. When he was able to string two thoughts together, he grumbled, "Took you long enough...." Now that he had a moment to rest, he took a good look at the thing that had attacked him. It... was another soq.... not even a skinwalker... "What the heck is that thing?"

Bardess Ookami
"Dead if he tries to hurt you again," Kyad answered grimly. "Are you alright, brother? How badly wounded are you?" He didn't give his brother a hard time for implying that he had taken too long. He was just glad he brother had called on him.

"Liver," Ashvay snarled, stalking towards them. They weren't running. Why weren't they running? Didn't they know how scary they were? He snarled at them. He wanted those livers!

Divena
"I'll live," Lori assured Kyad. He glanced at his bleeding rear and grimaced. Probably. He didn't think he was bleeding so badly that he'd bleed out, but how was he to know. Once this problem was all cleared up, he'd make a big show of whining over his pains and complain about how he was dying. That was in keeping with the over dramatic brother that Kyad knew. But right now, with his life in very real danger, he didn't think it was time for theatrics.

Bardess Ookami
"No you wont," Ashvay crooned. He would eat that liver!

"You had better," Kyad told his brother, never taking his eyes from his foe. "And you... you had best leave. Now. You'll not be harassing my brother any longer, foul fiend!"

"Going to eat his liver," Ashvay snarled. "Then yours. Rip. Tear. Chew. Swallow. Rip. Rend. Fear filled livers. Fatty flesh. Mine," he snarled.

Divena
If Lori was the type to mock others, which he unfortunately wasn't, he would have been torn between "foul fiend" and the stranger's obvious inability to string together a proper sentence. "Kyad, I do not believe that he can be reasoned with. Unless, of course, you're hearing something I am not." He doubted that. With a wince, he pushed himself to his feet again. He wasn't a fighter, typically, but he was beginning to worry about Kyad's safety. His brother was a fine warrior, but a crazy person was twenty times worse than an angry brawler.

Bardess Ookami
"Then I shall speak in such a way that he cannot misunderstand," Kyad said, and lunged at Ashvay.

Oh it was so boring when they thought they could attack him. They should defend, then run. Otherwise the liver tastes less good. It always tastes GOOD, it is liver, after all. Liver just tastes better when it's brined in fear. He met the lunge, dashing in and low to bite at the neck of the others. His teeth caught on the clasp of his cloak and sheered off, leaving him stumbling back with a mouth filled with feathers. That was almost as bad as curls. "LIVER!" he cried, lunging again.

Divena
"Kyad!" Lori yelped when the creature lunged. The pink twin looked around quickly until he found a thick branch. Seizing it up in his mouth, he jumped forward, swinging it at Ashvay. He wasn't nearly as coordinated as Kyad, but he wasn't trying to actually strike Ashvay, just distract him long enough to give his brother an opening. Hopefully not so long that Ashvay managed to hurt him further.

Bardess Ookami
There was a good strong sound as branch met Soq. A shame that the Soq that took the blow was Kyad. He stumbled.

Ashvay used that opportunity to lunge, not at the downed Kyad, but at the terrified - and still armed - pink prey. The one that smelled of fear. HE licked his teeth as he lunged, intent on having a bite.

Kyad managed to get his head up as Ashvay passed, biting down on his tail hard, and pulling.

Divena
Lori swung the branch again, this time actually aiming at his attacker. He made mental note to apologize to his brother later. He would have done it then, but doing so would have meant dropping the branch, and that was something he had no intention of doing until they had dealt with this crazed lunatic. Crazed lunatic? Was that redundant? No... no, he was pretty sure that he was justified in describing the attacker as that.

Bardess Ookami
Ashvay Kicked at Kyad as he took the tree branch blow to his face, opening a new slice across his cheek.

Kyad, his own nose bloody fought to hold on to that tail. He reared, trying to enclose his talons around the other stallion's rear legs. A very difficult task, that seemed pretty well impossible. He was taking a fair beating back there, but he was keeping Ashvay back.

Ashvay kept snapping his teeth at Lori, ignoring the pain of the branch, biting a smaller twig off and spitting it out when it poked his tender nose.

Divena
This... clearly wasn't working the way that Lori had been hoping. He finally dropped the branch and jumped back, out of Ashvay's reach. He continued backing away, trying to put a tree between him and the attacker. “Kyad, let him go!” he ordered, upon seeing how bloody his brother was. “I’m supposed to be the red one, not you!”

Bardess Ookami
Kyad wasn't stupid enough to open his mouth to reply to that. He'd thwap his brother later. He finally gave up on trying to catch the failing hind hooves and reared again, sinking talons into Ashvay's rump.

Ashvay Reared, screaming in outrage. His meal was escaping and that HURT! HE slammed his hooves back hard enough into Kyad's chest to make the other stallion let go and stumble back. Ashvay lunged forward as soon as he was free, going after Lori once again. Fear smells. LIVER!!!!!!

Divena
Oh come on! This was getting ridiculous!! Lori darted around the tree, trying to keep it between him and the white stallion. Most creatures that attacked him would eventually let up on him when Kyad got involved. Something about taking out the bigger threat before going after the easy prey. What was wrong with this lunatic that he kept ignoring the thing that was HURTING HIM and kept going after Lori?! There was no way Kyad was going to let the creature kill him, surely he could see that by now!

Bardess Ookami
Kyad lunged at the attacker, ripping his talons through the cloth on Ashvay's back, and unfortunately getting them caught and tangled there. The more he struggled to free himself, the worse it became.

Which would have been a great moment for Ashvay to attack Kyad with rear hooves. savaging the greater threat so he could kill both at his leisure. A logical, rational attacker with a half an ounce of brain would realize that. Ahsvay... kept lunging for Lori, half mad by the scent of fear and blood. LIVER! HE WANTED THAT LIVER! He tried to get to Lori and his struggles actually helped free Kyad.

Kyad stumbled free and snarled. They needed help. But it clearly wasn't going to come, so it was up to him. No one got to hurt his little brother. No one.

Divena
For a second, Lori froze and watched when his brother was stuck. The second Kyad was free, Lori snapped back to his senses and, once again acting as a rational being would, he ran. He ducked around the tree, slid under some branches, and crashed through the bushes, trying to lead Ashvay away. Clearing the white soq was completely crazy and, for some reason, intent on Lori. For a brief moment, he considered the possibility that this attack was completely personal. But he hadn't irritated anyone lately, and he'd never seen anyone like this fellow, so he decided to chalk it up to really, truly bad luck.

Bardess Ookami
If Kyad were the type to swear, he would have sworn at his brother then. Well... if he had the breath. Nobel idiot trying to lure the attacker away was well and good, if he could FIGHT. As it was, he was just making it harder for the limping Kyad to keep up. How was he supposed to keep him safe from back here?

The answer was he HAD to keep him safe. So he would. Kyad pushed himself, putting speed on through bruised and battered legs, ignoring the pain that came whenever a broken talon hit the ground.

Ashvay heard the other following. So good of Liver to come to him. But he wanted the other liver first. the tasty liver full of fear and sweat. He licked his teeth as he followed his prey, that pink standing out from the trees like a sign telling him where the liver was. The scent and the sight drove him half mad. "LIVER!" rang his battle cry. Liver! Forever Liver!

Divena
"Yeah, yeah," Lori panted, cutting a sharp turn. "Liver. We know. I heard you. Learn a new word already..." He glanced back to see how close the stranger was... and then to see if he could spot his brother. He had trouble seeing the golden twin, which was bad. Either something had happened to Kyad and Lori had missed it, or... nope, not going there. Lori spotted a tree with thick branches. Bracing himself, he leapt for it. Using his talons to help pull him up, he scrambled up onto the lowest branch, then struggled up to the next highest, hoping it would keep him just out of the stranger's reach. He couldn't climb much higher. The branches most certainly wouldn't hold his weight.

RP Log

Bardess Ookami
Ashvay snapped at a hoof as he ascended, then snarled, prowling the base of the tree, glaring up. He hated when prey climbed. This is why he didn't hunt birds and squirrels. Well, that and them having livers that were far too small. And sometimes he forgot and hunted them anyway. But this was a big fat terrified liver. How dare it go up. He snarled again.

Kyad was racing full out, trying to catch up. He stopped dead, nearly falling on his face when he saw the scene before him. He had to lure the monster away from his brother. Had to. Oh grass, this was NOT going to be fun.

He took a deep breath then called out, as if to Lori, but really to alert the monster to closer, easier prey, already wounded and bloody prey. "Just because you've feathers on your cape and talons on your hooves, does not make you a bird."

Ashvay spun and faced Kyad, licking his teeth. Close. Here. Not as good, but close. Liver for livers sake! He started to advance on Kyad. LIVER.

Kyad nodded and turned, running, not as fast as he could, he had to make sure the beast would follow him, not go back to Lori. He just hoped his idiot brother would be smart for once and wait until they were gone, then go for help. He glanced back to see if the creeper was still after him when pain shot through his haunches.

Ashvay's teeth sank into the rump of the soq before him. Too far from the Liver. But near the spine. If he could snap the spine he could feast. Then the liver would fill with fear. He ripped with his teeth, pulling them along the flesh then out, loving the sound of pain in the other Soq's scream.

Divena
Kyad! Lori felt like cursing his brother. Why couldn't the idiot have left well enough alone? Lori was up in the tree! He had been out of reach! Why couldn't Kyad have gone off and gotten help? Oh... right... because the idiot was a 'hero.' Stupid, idiotic, mutter mutter grumble moron mutter mutter. Lori moved carefully along the branch, braced himself and jumped as high and far as he could, aiming for the stranger that had just bitten his brother. He let out a mighty battle cry. "DEATH FROM ABOVE!!"

Bardess Ookami
"LORIMAR!" Kyad scolded. That idiot! There was no sense in them both getting killed!

Ashvay let out a cry of his own when the large prey landed on his back. His hooves went out from under him and he hit the ground hard. Okay, running was best, fighting back was one thing, but this...? This wasn't fun at all. How was he supposed to reach that liver from here? They weren't playing the game right! They weren't supposed to eat HIS liver! He was supposed to eat their livers! He thrashed around under his prey, trying to get free.

Divena
Lori stared down at the stallion under him, stunned. That...really shouldn't have worked. At all. He came to his senses quickly and scrambled to get away from their attacker, making a point to kick at Ashvay's head as much as he could. "Just. Stay. Down!"

Bardess Ookami
Ashvay snarled and pulled to his feet. He wanted that liver, and he wanted it now. He could smell it. He stumbled a bit as he tried for his prey, unwilling to give up on a liver that was this close when he had worked up such an appetite. So hungry. And the Liver so close... He started towards the scared one, stumbling a bit, feeling blood run down from his back. Beautiful blood. Delicious blood. He loved the smell of it.

His hoof hit a branch and smashed it loudly. A movement from the side. The sound had startled a large doe nearby with her small baby doe. fawn. deer. whatever it was called. He could smell their livers, hear their hearts beating. They stared at him. He lunged at the pair and they bolted. The other Soqs were forgotten for the moment as he fell upon the little one, ripping into it's flank with his teeth.

And Kyad looked like he was about to be stupid enough to interfere.

Divena
Lori saw the look on his brother's face. He knew what it meant. Though it pained him to do so, he rammed his shoulder into Kyad's. "Run," he hissed, trying to usher the more noble twin away from the dying fawn and vicious soquili. For all his dramatics, Lori was actually exceedingly practical. He knew a losing battle when he saw one. He wanted to help the fawn, but doing so would only cost all three of them their lives. It was an eat or be eaten world, sometimes. Survival of the fittest... and his brother was fit. Kyad needed to survive.

Bardess Ookami
Kyad took the blow. and wanted to argue, he wanted to help the poor deer and her baby but...

But if he stayed to fight, so would his brother. Lorimer would get hurt worse. And Kyad had to protect him at all costs. Even at this cost. It hurt to walk away, to not help. But he had to protect his brother.

HE was doing the right thing, right?

So...why did his heart feel so heavy as he limped off behind Lori?
