Quote: I will be leaving on a trip Wednesday evening, and returning on Sunday, so replies will be slow during that time. Participants: * Yune * Lilija * Constanta stood at the ready beside the door to the Great Library, ready and eager to greet any visitors. Though, in her case 'eager' tended to look more like 'mildly interested'. Well aware that she tended to appear intimidating, Constanta had spent the week carefully inscribing a welcome banner to hang beside the entrance. As she loathed to raise her voice in a crowd, the scroll did the proclaiming for her. "In Celebration of the past year, the whole of the Great Library will be opened to the public!
Queue here for tours, including demonstrations on paper crafting, a brief lesson in calligraphy, and a short story session, to be followed by refreshments in the foyer!"Constanta had thought long and hard on whether or not to serve refreshments, since they were anathema in an environment where a stray drop could ruin weeks or months of hard work. In the end, she'd decided she would, but only in the foyer, and only after she'd made sure to remove anything remotely likely to be ruined by food or drink. She was willing to make an exception since she very much wanted to attract potential Librarians. Even if the only B'alam who came were those interested in the free food, they would at least get a chance to see the hard work that went on behind the scenes, and hopefully develop a healthy respect for what the Librarians did.

She had gathered in the library with a few of the current librarians for the grand announcement. She was hoping to one day be a lead librarian but for now she was content with starting out at the bottom of the totem pole. Pale eyes watched the with anticipation as Constanta stood by the doors to make the announcement. She was just inside to greet anyone that decided to come in. She spent enough time in here, she figured what would the harm be?
She was hoping that after today she could start out as a librarian. She knew Yune had similar aspirations but he wasn't here yet.
She was very much excited about the whole ordeal. It would mean more bodies in the library and the scrolls would finally be getting more use than just her and the current librarians reading through them. Wings shifted semi nervously as she hadn't really been around large crowds of others before and she was kind of hoping Yune showed up soon so she could feel less nervous. She felt steady around him and more in tune to herself.
She took a deep breath in and let it out slowly and waited patiently for things to start or for Yune to make his appearance.

Yune was lurking near the back of the library, like he often did. The pale male disliked the fact that there was going to be more then the normal amount of balam in the library today. It would be much louder then he wanted it to be. Though that fact could not be helped. Part of him just wanted to cuddle up in the back and avoid all of the strangers who would be entering into the library. However he did have a goal today. He wanted to ask the head librarian if he too could become a Librarian just like his mate had become recently, even if the thought of it frightened him.
Like Lilija he wanted to help others in his own way, even if he was nervous about doing so. Perhaps this ordeal could help him grow as a tahtill, finally he could try to voice his wants. He knew most of the library inside and out, as it was very likely to find him there lurking amongst the rows of scrolls. So he figured he would be a pretty good candidate for it. Yune had also read most of them and was slowly getting into the curiosity of writing himself. This was one of the main reasons why he wanted to become a librarian to learn to write.
Finally he gained the courage to come forth from the back of the library, emerging from his comfort zone of sorts. It was quite obvious he was nervous as the end of his tail twitched erratically. No matter how hard he tried he could not stop it, so he let it go free, despite how awkward it seemed. "Lilija" he whispered, his voice barely audible as he came up behind her.
His blue orbs fell upon the lead librarian Constanta. Today he told himself Today is the day. The day he would finally approach her. Of course he had seen her around quite often, as he never seemed to leave, though he never actually attempted to make conversation with her, well today that would change.

(Decided just to post another post so I can respond to Astoria as well) Zee Oddwyn Also hope this is alright that I'm making this before he's an official Librarian (or making it so that this rp makes him an official librarian)

As there hadn't been anyone by yet, Constanta decided to recheck her preparations within. It would only take a few moments, and if the Grand Weaver chose those moments for some B'alam to come to their door, well, they would just have to wait. With an efficiency of movement, Constanta glided to her feet and re-entered the Library. He gaze slid habitually across the room, searching in an unfocused way that allowed her to notice anything out of place. And lo and behold, she met another B'alam's eyes. A male, as pale as Constanta herself. He seemed familiar, as did the female beside him. They'd been here before, she realized. Quite often, in fact. Perhaps her first guests would come from within the Library instead of without? She padded quietly over to them, wondering if perhaps they were Yoliliztli. They certainly seemed close. "Welcome." she greeted both, cordially. "Would either of you be interested in taking a tour of the Library? I believe I've seen both of you here before, so it would consist of those areas normally off limits. I imagine you've made yourselves familiar with the public areas, but do correct me if I'm wrong."

Yune's ears perked when Constanta spoke to them after reentering the library. The pale and blue colored male gave a small bow of his head in respect to her. Yes he was nervous but her words seemed to drive his curiosity more. To explore places in the library that he had not gotten to. To read scrolls that were not available to everyone. Yes, he would like that a lot. Perhaps to see behind the scenes of the library that no one else had seen thus far.
"Yes, please" he spoke quite eagerly nodding his head. His original reason for exposing himself had left his mind and now his eager curiosity was consuming him. "We would love it," He continued piratically bouncing on the balls of his paws like an eager child. "I would love it." He corrected feeling wrong about speaking for his Yoliliztli, though he figured she would love it as well but still he felt wrong about doing so.

She had to be honest with herself that she was glad the Lead Librarian was as light as her and Yune. It made her feel more hopeful about their place in this world. She wasn't upset about her coloring for she had found her calling within the dusty tombs of the library and had therefore been lead to Yune. She couldn't have asked for more than that. She was glad that she had been given so much so soon.
Ears twisted and her head turned as her beloved approached. "Yune, I'm happy you're here." She said softly in return giving him a warm smile and rubbed her face against the side of his cheek very briefly. She watched as Constanta entered the Library and approached. She couldn't help the smile that formed upon her maw as she asked them if they'd like to see some of the restricted areas.
Eyes glanced over towards Yune as he suddenly became more relaxed and quite excited answering for both of them. "I would love it as well." She said returning her gaze towards Constanta. "My name is Lilija and THIS excited tahtll is Yune." She said with laughter in her voice. She was very pleased that he was warming up a little bit. She was hoping in time he wouldn't be so withdrawn from the world. Which was probably why they found each other.

"Excellent." Constanta exclaimed, offering the two the politest of smiles. She motioned toward a doorway leading deeper into the Library. "Then, Yune, Lilija, if you would follow me? I believe we will begin with a demonstration on how we create the paper used in our books." She led the way, padding her way confidently through a maze of corridors and into a room that smelled of wet plants. Various contraptions were spread around at the edges of the room. There were enormous frames that would require several Balam to lift them stacked neatly in piles, and a large, flat bottom basin had been cut into the floor on the side farthest from them, right against the wall. Water could be heard gurgling on the opposite side. There were bins and bins of ripped scrap paper standing next to workstations that were currently empty of workers. Smaller bins were filled with sorted plant matter, flowers in one, reeds in another, mushrooms, fronds, wood-chips, and etc. Each workstation had a mortar and pestle, and there appeared to be a giant version tucked off in a corner, surrounded by smaller pots. There was another doorway off to somewhere else on the wall not occupied by the frames, and it was surrounded by neatly stacked trays, and racks of fabric stained by heavy use. Constanta showed her guests in, and directed them first to the basin on the far wall. "We use this room to create large sheets of paper, from which we cut smaller pieces, or scrolls, or whatever our projects might call for. This is the basin where we combine the pulp with water from an underground tributary. It's reserved for Librarian use only, so it's guaranteed to be clean, though the minerals it carries means we occasionally must chip off the mechanisms controlling its flow into and out of this room." She demonstrated, winding a crank that lifted a gate in the wall, water poured in, sloshing into the basin. When she'd filled it to her satisfaction, Constanta closed the gate, and walked to the other side, where an identical contraption waited. She cranked this one only a little, just enough to lift the gate by a fraction, and the water level slowly began to drop. Constanta quickly dipped an empty pot into the water, saving some for her demonstration. She beckoned Lilija and Yune to follow her to one of the workstations, which she had prepped earlier with tools for the occasion. "If you'll each take a seat?" she prompted, pouring water into a smaller, portable version of the basin that sat on the worktable. "While we generally make paper as large as possible, we do occasionally make smaller sheets using these tools. Some or our Librarians will experiment with using different materials to make paper for special use, or to simply improve the pulp used in the larger pieces. You'll notice some small bins with various bits of plants in them. Take a piece if you wish, and we'll add it to this small batch we're making." Quote: Roll 1-10 sided dice, and match what you roll with the list below! 1. A small, blue flower with teardrop shaped petals. 2. A knot of dark brown, nearly black bark with a spicy scent. 3. A gray-green leaf with short, fine hairs covering the underside. 4. A withered purple vine with thorns. 5. A white mushroom cap with fine, lacy gills. 6. A sprig of mint. 7. A tight cluster of dried red berries. 8. A fibrous, yellow reed, capped with an orange puff. 9. A green fern, tightly coiled and blushed with pink. 10. A dark purple mushroom, shot through with white flecks. What effect will they have? Find out in the next post! Constanta filled the mortar and pestle with scrap paper while she waited for her guests to make their choice, and motioned for them to add their contributions to the bowl.

The pale male’s ears shifted back when Lilija introduced him. Right he had forgotten to give his name during all of his own excitement which in fact had surprised the male. How long had it been since he felt this excited? Since the first time he had entered the library. The fact that he had forgotten his name made him quite embarrassed and his excitement slowly dulled.
Yune followed Constanta mainly in silence. The new scents tingled Yune’s nose it was quite refreshing to the different smell the paper in which the scrolls he was used to reading. Some of the scents were familiar but usually it was in combination in which he was used to. The pale Tah’s silence continued as he watched as the mechanism was being used. It was quite intriguing, and wanted to give it a try himself.
His ears perked once more as they were beckoned over towards the workstation. Tail giving an excited flick at the thought that they were going to make some paper. Yes, this was defiantly his calling, now all he would have to do is find the courage to ask if he could become a librarian.
Yune sat his rump down when he was asked to sit and watched as the demonstration was made. When motioned towards the materials, Yune sniffed at them before lifting one up and adding it to the mixture. It was a gray-green leaf with short, fine hairs covering the underside. “Are the materials gathered from outside the caves or are they grown here?” he questioned finally speaking.

She tagged alongside Yune as the pair walked behind Constanta as she lead them to show how paper was created for the books. This was exciting! Maybe she'd finally understand why some of the books and scrolls smelled the way that they did. Not that she didn't like how they smelled, she was just curious as to how they got it.
She looked around and made sure to step carefully as they may their way through the corridors and her eyes grew wide when they entered a room filled with so many odds and ends. She felt like a small cub! Or at least imagined this is what a small cub would feel like. She looked at all of the different plants and assorted bins. This was truly a wondrous sight to behold. "This is amazing.." She said in awe and wonder as she caught herself lost in the glory of the room.
She listened as Constanta brought them over to a bin and explained how the process worked and gave a small demonstration. She smiled happily and took a seat next to Yune and looked over at him with happiness radiating from her persona. She grabbed a small blue flower with teardrop shaped petals and admired it for a moment and then placed it into the mixture before her and looked over at Yune's as he picked up a grey-green leaf and placed it into his. She liked his question very much and looked towards Constanta for an answer.
"How long do the materials tend to keep? Or do they get used up relatively quick?" She asked seeing that it fit with Yune's question. She was excited about this and her tail flicked back and forth in her joy.

"Excellent questions, both." Constanta replied, setting pestle to mortar. She meticulously began grinding the combined materials down as fine as she could. "Their origins are generally a mixture, though we tend to receive more materials from within the cave. Those coming from without are generally considered more desirable, as they're more difficult to obtain." With her pulp well-blended, Constanta transferred the mortar's contents into the water filled basin, and began agitating the mixture. She continued to speak as she did so, trusting that her two inquisitive guests would be paying close attention. "Most materials, provided they've been properly dried before transportation last quite awhile. Several moons, even, if those keeping track of our supplies are vigilant for signs of mold or rot. However, most materials tend to be used with one moon's time." The last was stated with perhaps a hint of pride. "Our goal has been to increase the output of books to further the education and entertainment of our Tribe. With more and more Balam arriving each day, our ability to obtain more materials should grow with the number of gatherers. Of course, we'll need more Librarians..." The pulp was well-blended and Constanta gestured their attention towards it, as she picked up two frames, one open, one with a mesh stretched within it. "As you can see, your additives have given the mixture a blue-gray tint. It's quite dark now, but should lighten considerably once dry." She lifted the frame with the mesh. "Now, this is your mold, and this empty frame is a deckle. When pressed together, you may notice the deckle overlaps the meshing on the mold. This will give your paper naturally straight edges once we've laid the pulp on the mold." She submerged the paired frames into the pulp mixture, gently shaking them back and forth in an effort to get as much of the mixture onto the mold as possible. When the pulp settled, she gently lifted the frames out of the mixture, and showed Lilija and Yune how the pulp laid evenly on the mesh. "It takes some practice to learn the proper thickness of your pulp mixture." she said, as she pulled the Deckle away, revealing bare mesh that the pulp hadn't had a chance to cover. Constanta whisked over a stiff cloth that she pressed tightly over the pulp, and with a practiced flip of the mold, the sheet of paper-to-be had been transferred completely to the cloth. Constanta laid it carefully to the side. "It will need a day to dry out completely. If you'd like to return this time tomorrow, you can pick up your paper as a souvenir. I hope you enjoyed the demonstration. Do you have any other questions in regards to creating paper?"

It was interesting to think about the materials that were being used to make paper and how they were gathered. Yune himself had not been outside the caves, and often wondered what it was like, but he doubt he would ever see it for himself first hand, it was not in himself to do so. Books was all he needed.
Yune listened and watched attentively as their questions were answered. With the mention of needing more Librarians his original purpose of attending this was coming forth again. It was a reminder to him to ask what he originally intended to ask, instead of letting his excitement of seeing the behind the scenes portion of this.
Before he could ask about becoming a librarian his attention was directed towards the pulp of their mixture. As Constanta worked away Yune took notes in the back of his mind. When Constanta was finished with the demonstration she asked if they had any more questions about paper making. After the demonstration he did feel more comfortable, so he went ahead and asked.
"No, I do not." he replied softly, "But," he continued. "I was wondering if there is a chance that I could become a Liberian." Having practically lived in the library he was quite interested in furthering her career here. The idea of paper making was quite an interesting concept and it only furthered his desire to become one. He waited patiently for Constanta to reply to his question. Hopefully his mate would ask the same, they had quite the same interests and he figured she would also like to become one as well.

She listened to Constanta as she spoke and watched as she ground her materials into a fine base and she did the same with her own ingredients. She could understand why materials outside of the cave could be hard to come by. Unless you knew where to find them before the sun came up there was no way in which you'd be able to gather too many. This made her think for a minute. "Couldn't we have someone who is able to travel during the day collect such materials for us?" She asked curiously. She was sure there were a few balam from the other tribes that wouldn't mind helping out. At least she hoped they wouldn't.
She followed Constanta's lead and transferred her pulp into the water basin and mixed the ingredients like the Lead Librarian was. She listened as they were told about the goal of increasing the output of books. This delighted her. She was glad that such a task was to be accomplished for reading was something everyone should try to do. She listened then as the need for more librarians was growing and she couldn't help but smile and look over at Yune. This was their opportunity! It couldn't be a more perfect moment to ask her if it would be possible if they joined the ranks.
She looked down at her mixture and picked up the pieces and followed Constanta's movements and then laid her finished product out much like she had. "I would very much like to return and pick it up." She said with a happy grin. Her gaze then turned to Yune as he asked if there was a chance if he could become a Librarian. She beamed at him and then turned her gaze back to Constanta. "I would very much like to be given the opportunity as well. Especially since you said the need for more librarians was growing every day."
Plus her and Yune were there almost every day it seemed so why not fill a job that would have them doing something they both enjoyed?

"That is indeed one of the Tribe's hopes. On the other paw, even more exotic materials could be obtained if we're able to establish a trading system with the other Tribes." Constanta agreed. When not one, but both of them asked after becoming a Librarian, Constanta felt a burst of satisfaction that she'd managed to read these two correctly. They did want to become Librarians! Excellent. Constanta mentally made a few changes to their scheduled tour. She could start them out right away by learning the filing system (if they hadn't already learned it considering they were here often enough), and then perhaps they could visit the Archives... unless they wanted to continue the tour as advertised? Constanta wanted to induct them right away, but standing on the principle of ceremony, thought she should make more of a show of accepting them. She frowned slightly, as if in deep consideration, and studied the pair of them. Would they hold up under the scrutiny, she wondered. She welcomed their enthusiasm, but Librarians were expected to keep a proper comportment. "As we grow, so too will our collective base of knowledge. Every Librarian is tasked with being at the very least, familiar with every branch, leaf, and bud on this growing tree. You will be asked to care for this knowledge, to be capable of directing the curious towards those tomes which will guide them in their path, and even to add your own bud to the tree. As you've seen here, a lot of energy goes into supporting our task. Do you believe you are capable?"

Yune listened as Constanta answered his Yoliliztli's question. It made sense and was quite exciting. Instantly he began to wonder what sort of paper that could be made from materials that came from far away places.
The Tah's attention was drawn away from his curiosity and back to Constanta as she began to explain what it meant and the challenges they would be facing as a Librarian. Yune gave a nod. Yes he felt that he would be able to handle this. That and if he didn't he always had his Yoliliztli's support, with Lilija by his side he felt that he would be able to take on anything. She supported him and gave him more confidence then anyone else he had met.
"Yes." he finally spoke with quite a conviction he had never had before. Yune had the confidence that he could do this. [WC: 145]
