Hewque yawned loudly and looked over at Thistlin who was still very much asleep. It was the large lizard thing his mother had gotten with the merchant they traveled with to help haul things. In fact she had told him that he would learn to ride Thistlin one day which was more than just a bit exciting. As it was now he had to ride with his mother holding on to his sides. With both his mother busy Hewque eventually grew bored of watching the amazing lizard sleep and decided to go exploring a bit. There were a lot of others about so Hewque decided to try and climb a bit higher to see the most interesting thing going on. Having been in Neued with his mother he was used to climbing though he couldn’t do it nearly as well as those who lived there. He was moving along slowly when he saw another youngling about who was climbing and sliding down a tree. It looked like fun. Smiling Hewque called out to him. “Hello!”

Hewque laughed and hurried to the side of his new playmate. “I think some of them were. Born in the tress that is.” Hewque watched the other boy try and climb and had to smile. He shrugged and wriggled his fingers as though it would show everything about him just by dong it. “I don’t have any shifter in me either. Though I think that’s easy to tell.” He rubbed his head with a grin and moved toward the tree to take a turn at trying to climb it. “Though I do ok on climbing up and over things because I do that all the time in the wagon but this is a bit different.” He frowned remembering how many times he had fallen on his butt the first time he tried to climb a tree. Still he had gotten a lot better in Neued the longer his mother had stayed there. He wasn’t really that good yet but he was a lot better than when he started. He was really proud of himself for that.

Hewque laughed. “I don’t look like anyone but my mom. Everyone says she’s really pretty though so I guess that makes me pretty too.” He looked over his new friend. “I’d get my hair the same length as your sisters and then confuse everyone.” It sounded like a good idea after all then they could have lots of fun and no one would be able to tell who was who, or maybe even think that just one of them was there and managed to be everywhere all at once! “I’m Hewque.” He was very proud of his name. “Arron sounds really cool!” He nodded. “Yep I live in the wagon with mom and a merchant. It’s really hard sometimes but I like it because mom sings me too sleep as the wagon rocks if we travel at night. ”

Hewque shrugged, he wouldn’t mind being pretty or handsome. Both were good in his mind. “Handsome then.” He started laughing when he saw Arron’s look that mimicked his sister. “If that frown was any deeper you could loose a shell in it!” He really liked Arron’s smiling face better. After all he got frowned at a lot in traveling and for a while some place momma had him hide in the cart and not come out. That didn’t happen so much anymore though. “Well maybe you’ll see her again and you can do it then. I wouldn’t know what it’s like to have a sister, twin or even a dad. It’s always been me and mother. Though now there is the nice merchant too. I guess he’s the closest I have to a dad. I’m sorry about your mom.”

Hewque stopped his tree climbing attempt and looked to the other youngling. Hewque couldn’t imagine what it was like to loose a dad because he had never had one, and loosing a sibling was a strange idea to him as well. Still he would be broken if his momma ever disappeared. He wanted to say something but didn’t really understand what to say in a situation like this. He watched the other zip up the tree and smiled following suit listening to the other’s advice. “Hey it works!” He climbed up next to the other boy and grinned at him. “You know I don’t why they left or what happened but I do know what we can do now.” A thought had formed in his mind and he was bound and determined to try it out. “I don’t know about your mom but my mom has little gifts that she keeps with her, she doesn’t have much and they are never very big but when she gets sad sometimes she pulls them out and looks at them. When I come over to her she tells me stories about the people who gave her little things like hair clips or shells. So why don’t you and I go find something nice for your mom to make her smile so when she gets sad she can look at it and think of all the good things and not the bad?”

He really hoped all that made sense.

Hewque nodded and looked down. It was a lot easier getting up then looking down and planning how do descend without injury or just jumping. “Ok that sounds good. I know the merchant me and momma travels with has a few things so I can check what he has in the wagon too! Maybe we’ll find something that he doesn’t really need and would be ok giving us to help you get your mom the perfect gift.” He nodded and slid forward just a bit which was enough for him to have push away from the tree to jump down unless he wanted to fall. The landing made him pitch forward and fall onto his hands but he was alright. Getting up he dusted dirt from his hands and knees with a grimace. He was much more at home in a wagon then a tree.

“Climbing is hard falling is easy.” He was pretty sure that was something someone a lot smarter than him said at a campfire once. Hewque smiled and lead the way toward where his wagon was parked. There was the merchant looking after the wares and trying to sell a few things calling out to passerbys. Hewque stood by waiting until the oban was done talking to a customer before he tugged on the man’s baggy pants. He tried to explain the situation and was directed to the ‘junk’ box in the back of the wagon. Pouting a bit Hewque moved toward the wagon and whispered to his new friend. “I don’t think he really gets it. You wanted to get a perfect gift for your momma not end up searching the junk bin.”
