Hey, Oliver. I need your help with something down by the training fields. Meet me there in 5?
PostPosted: Tue Nov 03, 2015 8:20 pm

When Oliver arrived at the training fields in just under five minutes, his hair was even a little more disheveled than usual, and he looked rather alarmed.

"I-is everything okay? What did you need my help for?" He asked quickly. Despite having run straight from the lab, he didn't look out of breath at all. Oliver had come a long way from the boy who had been tossed into the ocean a year and a half earlier.

Lex gave Oliver his most gracious of smiles, before pulling out his pistol and training it in between Oliver's eyes, right on the bridge of his nose, inches from the boy's freckled skin.

"Personal assessment, Oliver. Training, if you will." His grin shifted slightly, eyebrows raised as if curious. "In other words, fight me."

Oliver's immediate reaction to having a gun pointed at his face was entirely too predictable. He froze.

Maybe it was something he should have expected from Lex, the older man always seemed to push him just a little farther, testing the bounds of his comfort and ability. Whether he was up to the challenge or not, he didn't dare give up from the start.

Besides, shield or no shield, the thought of being shot in the face at point blank range was not fun. He had to move.

Oliver's focus shifted away from the pistol, and in an instant he ducked to one side, giant axe in hand. With a metallic click and a hiss of air released under pressure, the blades slid to form a single-edged greatsword. The resulting slash was much faster than the axe could usually manage, although it suffered in strength.

"Can you at least give me a warning before I get to the field? I didn't know we had these kinds of assessments!" He squeaked.

The sudden change in weapon caught Lex off guard, but the swing bounced off him with little more than a scratch. He noted it down, firing the gun at Oliver's hands in an attempt to disarm the boy. "Monsters and Demons don't give fair warning, Oliver." Lex lectured, a little stern. "And this isn't on the record - consider it a 'Lex Special.'"

God, that sounded cheesy and terrible.

Oliver couldn't argue with that point. Usually monsters and demons wouldn't call you out, but one could never account for trickery, and finding someone other than Lex waiting for him could have been bad.

"Ow, Lex!" he protested, "I still have a lot of data to type up today!" The shot was enough to loosen Oliver's grip on the sword-axe with one hand, but it didn't appear to have any effect on the momentum of the weapon. The switch to a single-handed grip was fluid enough, almost too slick considering Lex had shot his 'dominant' hand.

Lex's prepared shot went wide, Oliver's weapon digging into the Fear shield's side and throwing him off balance. Damn, the kid was pretty good with that thing. Lex smirked, training the muzzle around Oliver's chest and arms. "Then you pop some Tylenol and keep on typing, Oliver." Lex's words weren't harsh, but there was a low and tense undertone to them. "Deus doesn't accommodate sick days, or let you off work for minor injuries."

Oliver lunged in with another slash, moving sideways rather than directly forward in an attempt to stay away from that pistol's aim. In one way Jökul had taught him a great deal about courage, if he didn't face attacks and stay close to his attacker he would never land a countering blow. The thought of being shot at still scared him, but he had to be prepared, there were times he couldn't afford to run away.

"Tylenol doesn't work, it will just hurt all day," the young man protested, fully aware paperwork did not wait on pain. He had spent a week writing with his left hand earlier in the year when his right was put out of commission, there could be no gentle hand-holding while work waited unfinished.

Lex shot at Oliver's hands again, but missed and grazed the boy's side. "Then don't complain about my trying to disarm you." Lex chided, lips pursed.

"And come at me like I were a demon, Oliver. Hit me with all you've got."

Oliver barely flinched, the longer he fought, the longer he got shot at, the less it affected him. As frightening as those blows to his shield were, it wouldn't leave any lasting damage here on the training field. He had to slowly leave those fears behind and press on. If he was to have any hope on a real mission, with real danger and real pain, he had to keep learning to press on.

"You won't disarm me," he replied, his swing a little more shallow than the last.

rumbled a voice in the back of his mind, and Oliver frowned at it's amusement. Lex wasn't a demon. No, not even because of that whole ocean diving incident.

"That's what I like to hear." Lex smirked, placing a few glancing shots at Oliver's shoulders and wrists. Oliver needed that resolve more than anything; he needed to have the confidence to face a monster dead in the eye and run Jokul through it.

"Remember, there's no wards in the field. They'll try to disarm you, too. Or dismember you. You have to come out on top, Oliver. Always come out on top."

"Like I could forget..." Oliver muttered, wincing as the shots hit him. This must have been what getting shot at while wearing a bulletproof vest felt like, feeling pain more like a forming bruise than a searing cut.

Either that, or Lex was going easy on him. The other man did often tend towards tough love as far as lessons were concerned, but he was a smart guy, and might be attempting a more gentle strategy. Letting Oliver feel like maybe he stood a chance. The kid just swung his axe again, inwardly bracing for the moment Lex was going to give him a solid thrashing.

Unfortunately, Oliver was right. Lex was going easy on Oliver, despite Regal's constant grumbling, the occasional shrieks. Oliver wasn't the type you could push over a ledge and expect to fly; the boy survived, but with help.

"Focus on your attack. Make it count. Make it matter." Lex instructed, firmly following his words with a smattering of rounds. "Don't swing so wildly."

"I was focusing!" Oliver yelped, but this time his weapon did swing wild. It barely clipped Lex, instead burying it's blade deeply in the ground. There was a lot of force behind that weapon, the kid had to grab it by both hands and yank it out of the ground, nearly tumbling backwards when it came free.

He quickly slipped into a defensive stance. "It's easy for you to say all that, your attacks don't need to swing at all!"
