The sun was setting and the horses of the herd were abuzz with new that Crusnik would finally be receiving her lantern. The mare had joined the herd not long again and was so serious about her training that she flew through it. She was all in for the herd, even though her cold aura might suggest to you otherwise. Crusnik was rare, a horse that seemed devoid of emotions or some how emotionally stunted. What would normally bring another horse to tears simply made the mare tilt her head. Sure, it could be hard to connect or relate with her. But she was offering something to the herd that many others might not recognize.
True Purpose. In the somewhat short time that Lutra has taken over leadership of the herd, he'd never met anyone like Crusnik. He remember chatting with her, or rather chatting at her when he met her as a foal along one of the paths he frequented as a Lantern holder. She wanted to find a reason for her existence and Fiamma Eterna was that purpose. The mare was a work horse, she would willingly work herself to exhaustion to serve the herd and those it helps. She would do great things for this herd, Lutra was sure of it.
The stallion over saw the setting up of the feast and the items that the mare would choose from before lighting her lantern. The items would have meaning to each horse individually. He gave a nod to the Seer before he went to find Crus's mentor Miss Ethel Anne. She was the mare put in charge of Crusnik's learning and in some ways she had it easy, but in others, so very hard.

The mare frowned as the sun started to set. She was pleased with her performance, he achieved the goal she set out to do. But she didn't understand why there had to be a feast in her honor. She was simply doing what needed to be done. Laz would be happy for her, that was a good thing. The stallion followed her to the herd and for some reason never left. The two seemed to have a great understanding of each other. There was less stress in being around him then some of the others really. Especially her 'mentor' Miss Ethel.
It wasn't that the mare wasn't nice or anything like that. But she talked at Crusnik and unnecessary words were a bother to the mare. She completed the tasks that Miss Ethel had assigned to her. It was a struggle at first but soon even they fell into a groove. Miss Ethel Anne would tell her what the task was and what it meant. The meaning behind doing all of this was very important to Crusnik, even if it didn't seen to show. She left her family for this... She still saw them regularly but she needed to worship the night in her own way. Crus wouldn't say that she got all warm and fuzzy helping lost souls or keeping the peace. But it was a goal to achieve and she did all this well. Granted some horses were intimidated by her, the mare simply had no use for anything unnecessary.
Her silver eyes watched Lutra, a long time friend, now her leader approach Miss Ethel.

Miss Ethel Anne was hurrying along to gather everything she needed for the ceremony. Crus was her first charge, and she would be damned if everything wasn't simply perfect. She sighed heavily, wondering if she should gather some flowers for the giving of the lantern, but she knew that Crusnik would not like that. The orange kirin snuffed and rolled her eyes before deciding to find some flowers anyway, determined that it would add a nice little charm to the monotony of the tradition of the herd. While Ethel appreciated how open and caring the herd was to her, she felt that it often lacked a bit of pizzazz. She was used to jewels and flattery, and this herd was very minimalist at best. They were strong and independent, and there was an assortment of personalities, but most of the members weren't particularly ritzy.
It took longer than expected for Ethel to find the perfect bouquet. The chilly fall weather had caused most of the flowers to wither, and she had been forced to throw a few nicely colored leaves into the bunch to liven it up a bit. She wasn't horribly surprised when she returned to Lutra looking for her. He was about as frantic as he could get, which meant he was cool as can be. Ethel couldn't help but roll her eyes when he finally approached her. "I know, I know. I'm late. But i couldn't just let you go on without a little more decoration! It just wouldn't be right." She searched for her charge quietly.

The stallion smiled as the ginger mare showed the bouquet she created. Miss Ethel was always one for aesthetics. He nodded in greeting to the mare. "Nothing like cutting it close. She'll need to choose her lantern and take the herbs before going in. You only have a few minutes to speak with her before she enter the cave after the sunsets." He tilted his head to Crusnik who was watching them.
"Thank you for taking such good care of her. I know she can be a little bit hard, but she will offer so much to this herd." Lutra gave her another grin before he walked away to let Crusnik know she needed to choose a lantern.
"Crusnik. You'll need to choose the vassel to carry your flame, and what to feed your flame. As you know of course. You don't need to rush but once you're ready please join myself and the Herbalist." With that, he walked away to wait for her. He wanted to give Ethel some time with the mare.

The starry night colored mare watched the brief exchange of words before Lutra's approach to her. The others in the herd were still getting things ready for the feast. There was no telling how long a horse could be in the cave for. But when they emerged with their colored flame it was a joyous event. Or so she had been told. She herself had only witnessed once Lantern Ceremony but she was not allowed to join the feast because she was only an apprentice and so as the bottom of the totem pole so to speak; she had to watch a near by path. But the sounds of cheers and enjoyment had reached her ears.
She nodded when Lutra approached and began speaking. Yes, of course she knew the procedures but he must have been a bit nervous. Since he had become leader there haven't been to many ceremonies. No one to her knowledge has ever failed to obtain their flame but she was sure Lutra wanted to make sure it never happened on his watch.
Crusnik turned to look at the items at hand. There were a lot of vessel options but Crusnik was a straight forward kind of mare. She didn't need anything to fancy, something that would let the light shine unhindered. That was with her silver eyes landed on a tear drop angled Lantern. It had decorative metal at the top, bottom and then an inch or so above a band. The glass panes were coarse with styled divots and three chains that met at a crystal bead and then became one chain.
It was like the lantern spoke to her and she knew it was the one.

Ethel managed a small smirk. "Well it wouldn't be quite like me to be on time for something, now would it?" The kirin was very aware of her usual tardiness, but everybody seemed to expect it of her. More often than not they would tell her that an occasion was happening sooner than it really was, just to try to get her there at a reasonable time. Naturally, the mare saw through this, and never strained to rush.
The petite mare rolled her eyes at the stallion's thanks. "Oh, she was nothing compared to the bratty little fillies I used to deal with where I came from." Though she'd never admit it, the small bit of recognition she had gotten for taking Crus as her first charge meant a great deal to Miss Ethel Anne. She was incredibly nervous to take on such responsibility, especially since she herself was one of the newest members to earn her lantern's light and her place in the herd. Before she could say anything more, though, he had left to speak with the younger mare.
Before approaching her charge, she watched her carefully as she looked over all the lantern choices. Ethel, herself, had brought her lantern with her from her past home, and though it was suggested she choose a new one, she simply couldn't part with that little piece of her history. Upon Crusnik making her choice, Ethel grinned. "How'd I know you'd choose that one? Very practical." Ethel didn't know quite what to tell the new member of the herd, so she simply chose to speak from experience. "Listen, I know you're going to put on your tough face and get through this just fine, but it's okay to be nervous. Everybody having all eyes on you can be incredibly uncomfortable."

The mare raised the lantern up to get a look at it and when Miss Ethel Ann joined her she smiled lightly. It was the polite thing to do, and yes the lantern was practical. It allowed for the mot light to be visible. And she wasn't going to make one like some of the others had. But she might see about using some of the lace that she received from her parents when she became an adult to hold it with. It would be important to honor her parents during this important moment of her life.
Crusnik tilted her head when Miss Ethel Anne got to business. It was true having everyone here to wait and watch seemed unnecessary but seemed very important to the herd. The only face she was hoping to see in the crowd was Laz's face. But the stallion was probably going to be wandering around. He had recently earned his lantern and yes Crusnik was present, and after all they had travelled to the herd together and were keeping each other's company frequently. She had to wonder if he would ask her to be his mate soon. It only seemed logical at this point, with how close they were.
The young mare needed to keep her thoughts straight for this. Her eyes glanced over the crowd that was starting to gather and he wasn't there. That was okay, she would be just fine without him here. She would be able to show him her colored flame later that evening.
"The unknown should no be feared but embraced." Crusnik spoke to her mentor with a factual tone and nod. Whatever would come, would come. There was no changing it. She was ready to work through whatever was sent her way, she would over come like she always had. But then turned to look at the herbs. What did she want to feed her flame? She ended up choosing a grassy looking bark. She held it up to show it to Miss Ethel Anne. Of course she choose what would be the easiest thing to find to keep the flame going. The moss was very common. Wasting time trying to find the food for her flame wouldn't make sense. And she knew that Miss Ethel Anne was thinking the same thought about her chose. Crusnik simply couldn't do something that seemed indulgent.
She placed the mossy bark into the lantern before picking it up and standing in front of her mentor she figured now was the right time. She had seen others do this and felt that it was also the right thing to do. She leaned forward and touched her nose to Miss Ethel's Anne's gently.
