She had a day off from work finally, and with no plans with Zack…or anyone else, Cambria had decided that it was going to be a pretty good day to head to the park and practice her soccer skills. It was something she missed a lot, and with life so busy…it was the easiest thing to give up, so whenever she got a chance she did try to go out and play.

Today she had gone to the park and ran with the ball for a good hour, just kicking it around and sprinting after it when she would kick it a little too hard. After an hour or so, she really, really over estimated her kick, and the ball went flying.

With a curse, Cambria went running after it, quite unhappy to see that it was flying right towards a girl with silver hair. Well s**t. That was all she would need would be to hit someone with a ball the first time she bothered running around outside again.

“Hey! Watch out! My ball’s coming right for you!”

…That didn’t sound weird or anything. Ugh. Whatever.

It was a beautiful day and Makenna decided to train outside instead of at the Dojo. She chose a park with shade and open space and started the first 108 traditional Yang style Tai Chi forms, first centering herself with some deep breathing. It was nice to get away from the Dojo on occasion so she wouldn’t have to listen to the Masters ask her to compete. She didn’t practice all those years to compete in some petty competition to see who could outclass whom. She already knew her prowess and had no need to prove anything.

The girl closed her eyes and ran through the form several times, taking her time with each movement as if she had forever to complete the move. Her breathing was in sync with her movements; calm and collected, managing to both tune out the world around her but remain somewhat aware of her immediate surroundings.

However, as she heard someone yell in her direction, she opened her eyes and glanced towards the voice, unmoving. A small frown touched her lips as she watched the ball zoom towards her and she broke her form, standing straight to avoid being hit by the ball. She watched as it zipped by her and continued on its way. She looked up as the other girl approached her, taking her appearance in, as if assessing her. She lifted her hand to point it at the retreating ball.

Her voice was flat as she spoke to Cambria, her tone brushed lightly with minor annoyance. “You should be more careful.”

Cambria blinked, slowing her run to a walk and letting out a sigh of relief when the girl did not get hit by the ball after all. “Uh…yeah. Sorry, it has a mind of its own sometimes I guess. And I’m pretty out of practice, that’s also a pretty big factor.”

But she was so full of other things to take up her time…like Zack and her job and…well. Zack.

“Anyway, sorry I almost hit you there. Glad you managed to avoid it, that would have hurt getting smacked in the face. It used to happen to me pretty often so…I feel you.”

She gave a laugh and rubbed the back of her head, remembering all of the times she had been assaulted by a ball kicked too roughly or too far…it hadn’t been very fun. “So…what were you doing just then? It looked pretty fancy.”

There was no reason to have to be rude…and it was nice to just have some time to talk to someone who looked at least a little bit close to her age.

Makenna listened as Cambria started to ramble, letting her speak herself into whatever topics she wished to tread. As the realization hit that this girl was going to keep on talking, Makenna’s arm slowly fell to her side. There really wasn’t a need for her to apologize, as there had been no danger to begin with, at least in Makenna’s mind, so the apology went unanswered.

The girl suppressed a sigh. “Tai Chi; it’s a Chinese form of Martial Art that translates to ‘The Great Fist’. It’s rather underestimated at times though because as opposed to focusing on force and swiftness, it’s strength lies in precision and balance.”

Obviously, Cambria was not going to get her own ball. Makenna turned from her wordlessly and walked towards the ball to retrieve it.

“Oh.” Honestly it sounded pretty boring to her…martial arts were supposed to be fun and exciting, right? Hitting and kicking and causing all sorts of mayhem. It was supposed to be…interesting not…slow motion moving…

Oh well. To each their own.

Cambria watched the girl walk over to her ball and raised a brow. “Um…I would have gotten that when the conversation was finished…unless you’re trying to tell me something. If you want me to leave, all you have to do is say so.”

No…that couldn’t be the case…maybe the girl just wanted to do a little one on one game of soccer. She knew the game was hard to resist, right? At least it was for her. “Or did you wanna play me? I promise that I’m a bit better of knowing where to kick the ball when I’m not playing against myself. So, what do you say? Wanna have a quick game?”

She was totally friendly. Totally.

Makenna ignored the disappointment she heard in Cambria’s ‘oh’, used to people not taking to her hobby. That was fine, maybe she would display some of what it really meant to practice this type of martial art to the point that she had. She stooped to pick the soccer ball up, holding it with both hands in front of her as she turned to bring it back to Cambria. There was nothing urgent or quick about her movements, she was still in the mindset of her forms.

As she was asked to play, she debated with herself first. Did she really want to play? No. Did she want to show what Tai Chi was really capable of without actually fighting someone? Usually, yes. It was a youth thing, she supposed, to feel the need to show people who underestimated her what exactly the form she had chosen was capable of; it dug at her pride.

“Sure. I just can’t touch it with my hands or arms, right? And don’t let the ball past me?”
