It really wasn't fair... Trips to Ida were supposed to be a joy and a break from life, a chance to relax and recover, but the damage she had found made it impossible to be on the asteroid without a creeping sense of dread. Ida didn't know a good many things about what was wrong with her planet and the unknown filled her with anxiety that did little to help with the day to day struggle.

Maybe more eyes and a new mind would help. Someone who wasn't as close to the problem as she was and could tell her she was over reacting. There were a variety of people she could have asked, but only one that her heart selfishly called out for.

Ida dropped the case of water she had lugged to the park on the cement bench that looked out over the pond, settling the canvas bag from her shoulder on top of it with a gusty sigh of relief. They weren't heavy, not in this form, but the sound was more for the thought of where she was going and the ever present want to go. Ida called to her in a deep way... She missed it when she was gone.

For a moment she pondered pulling out her phone as slim brown fingers picked at the plastic holding the bottles together, but the thought was discarded. She didn't want to seem impatient... Hver would arrive whenever she arrived, it wasn't going to hurt anything if she was late. Especially since Ida herself was early, too impatient to be off world to wait. Too excited to see the cosmos knight too, if she was being truthful.

I'm being silly and I need to tone it down. Being too eager scares people off, doesn't it? Being too intense? I don't want to over do it... I don't know how to do this part... The plastic parted under her nail and she picked at the tear, turning her thoughts to the dead zone instead. It was effective at cooling her excitement and a small line appeared between her brows as the young woman settled into the bench, staring out over the dark water as she curled her hands in her lap.

I need to find a way to fix it... Can it be as easy as clearing away the dead plants and replanting? Fertilizer? I should look into it... There are probably methods for revitalizing land. Maybe this has even happened here and people found a way to fix it.

There were never enough chances to see Ida. Never enough outings.

Hvergelmir arrived promptly, finding Ida already there waiting for her on a park bench. She looked beautiful and far off, like some queen surveying a large territory -- and Hvergelmir was overcome, as usual, by the desire to kiss her. She wanted to soothe the troubles from her furrowed brow.

She bent to do just that.

Her fingers smoothed long, dark bangs out of the way. Beneath them, Ida's symbol glowed bright across her forehead; Hvergelmir pressed her lips to it in greeting.

"Penny for your thoughts," she offered, straightening once more. "You look like you're somewhere very far away."

Ida startled, feeling cool fingers brush across her forehead, but a darted glance set her at eased immediately and left her to feel warmed instead when lips pressed to her forehead. It was impossible not to reach for Hvergelmir even as she pulled back, brown fingers sliding down the outside of a bare arm and off her elbow again.

"Sorry, I should have noticed your aura when you came up." She said, unable to help way the muscles in her cheeks wanted to pull the corners of her lips up every time she saw Hver. Especially lately, when the sight came with this fluttery feeling in her stomach and warmth in her chest. "I was thinking about Ida and why I wanted you to go with me. And what I'm going to do about it."

The young woman rocked forward to push herself up off the bench and she reached again for Hver as she leaned in to hug her. It felt so good to wrap her arms around her and pull her close, to touch their cheeks together and feel the tickle of her hair against her nose. If that was all she ever did, hold her like that, she thought she might live content...

"How have you been? Tiede okay? Working at the flower shop going ok? Probably well into all the Halloween and fall stock now." She mused as she eased her hold. It was strange, to think of the shop and not be involved in it. Stranger still, to actually consider how long it had been since she'd done the stocking or worked the register. She'd already made it through her first year of college and started in on the second... time seemed to pass so quickly.

Ida smelled good. She always smelled good -- and being this close to her made even outdoor, open areas feel warm and cozy. It was a good place to stay, and Hvergelmir rarely drew back from a hug first.

"Things are good with us," she said. "Really good. We've been studying a lot, and if everything goes well, we'll be able to take our exams soon. The apartment's been a little cramped with our new friend staying with us -- but it's good. We've been having fun. We got some old board games from the thrift shop and we've been playing a lot of Mall Madness and Mystery Date. How's school?" she asked, with her chin resting comfortably on Ida's shoulder.

"I'm glad its going well, with the three of you in that tiny apartment." She said, pressing her cheek against her hair. She reached to run her fingers through the pearl strands for a moment, unable to resist the desire, before she pulled back. They couldn't exactly stand here all night, as appealing as it was to have Hver's head on her shoulder.

"School is fine. Its really hard, but its a medical program. I struggle, but if I work really hard, I don't do too badly." She said as she offered a smile, brushing fingers down her cheek lightly. "Its getting easier, slowly, to push down the reaction to blood and wounds. Its progress, which is good. Unless something comes up, hopefully I'll be done with it all in July."

Hopefully. As long as she didn't get injured or kidnapped, forcing her to miss school and potentially need to repeat classes. Ida reached for Hver's hand and tucked it into her elbow before she turned for the water case. Phone in one hand, she hooked her fingers into the plastic wrapping the bottles and then offered her friend another small smile.

"Are you ready? I just want to drop these supplies off at the tower so we don't have to lug them all over the place. Its a bit of a walk to what I want you to see, but unless you need to be somewhere, I suppose we don't have to hurry." It would even be nice, to walk along with the cosmos knight on her planet.

With one hand tucked around Ida's arm, Hvergelmir brought the other hand up to cradle beneath the pack of water bottles Ida was carrying, helping her shoulder a portion of the weight. It made for a nice excuse to stay close as could be, her body turned inward toward Ida's -- and she liked the idea of helping, even if Ida didn't exactly need it for such a simple task.

What mattered was letting Ida know that Hvergelmir was always there for her, to help her and share her burdens, even in the smallest ways. Little gestures could mean so much to someone who was convinced that they weren't special.

"I'm ready," she affirmed, "and at your disposal for the rest of the day. You just lead the way."

She waited for Ida to take them up to her asteroid, watching her process. It was a little different for senshi than for knights.

"July?" she echoed, returning to an earlier topic. "So soon? That's amazing -- I'm impressed."

She felt the weight in her hands lighten and she glance to see Hver taking part of the water. Surprised, she smiled in gratitude, and after a moment of thought, let her friend take that end while she held the other. It freed up her hand to hold her phone and work the buttons, and really, if Hver was going to offer... why not let her?

"Thanks." She murmured as she settled Hver's arm more securely in her elbow. As she thumbed her phone open, she shrugged a little.

"I've been taking classes for a year now and then some." Ida said with a small smile. "The nursing program only takes two years to complete before I start actually working in a hospital. It is hard to imagine I'll be done so soon, but I could always keep working on a bachelor's degree while I'm doing work at the hospital. I just want to get to it, you know?"

She squeezed the arm she held gently before she pressed the button and between one breath and the next, they were no longer on Earth. Grass brushed their hips and Ida drew a long, deep breath. She drank in the energy that radiated up from the planet, her eyes closed in a moment of simple enjoyment. The sun was low on the horizon, having just risen, the glow of the flowers at their feet faded in the light.

Ida sighed softly as she came back to herself, an easier expression on her face as she banished her phone and released Hver's arm to take full grip of the water carton now. She led the way to the Tower they had arrived beside, the Observatory she had been working on to the side of them. The cache she kept of general supplies lay beside the wall of the Tower and it was there that the water and bag went, stacked next to a half empty thing of water she had brought before.

"Do you want one?" Ida offered once she had set down her supplies, waving at the water bottles.

Hvergelmir shook her head at the offer. "No, I'm fine, thanks." She looked around, watching the way the sun shone across the landscape here on Ida's private asteroid. "It's always so beautiful here," she said. "I wish . . . My Wonder only had a small garden, but it's never shown any signs of coming back to life. I don't know if it ever will. I wonder if it's because the plants there were never native to it in the first place."

She loved her Wonder -- but it was hard not to look over to the dead patch of land on the far side, and remember sitting among the flowers and bushes with Eikthyrnir once long ago. It was hard to see it all as just so much dead soil.

Then again, she didn't have the bond with her Wonder like Ida had with her asteroid. The marks on her skin -- transcendence. She couldn't really expect the same results.

"I like it here," she said -- then looked back. "I like how you look when you're here."

The young woman left the supplies in their cache and came to rejoin her friend.

"I could help you plant some things, if you want, or just tell you how to go about it so you can do it yourself. I've always found gardening really soothing. You might like doing it." Ida slipped her hand into Hver's, reestablishing the connection between them that she always seemed to yearn for when she didn't have it. "I can give you some plants from here or we can get some from Earth, or wherever you like."

Her dusky thumb brushed across Hver's paler knuckles as she glanced down at their hands, enjoying the simple action. Being with Hver was good, like being on Ida was good. Dark eyes rose as she felt her face warm, a shy sort of smile surfacing.

"I just... like it here." She said softly, her fingers griping more firmly. "It feels safe. Or... it did."

Her smile faded and she straightened up. "Come on. I still have that area to show you. I need your thoughts on it... you'll have a different perspective than I do and I don't know... maybe you'll think of something I haven't."

The eternal led the way away from the Tower, striking out across the city. The walk was easy down the winding paths between buildings, but soon enough that was left behind and they were walking through the rolling grasslands down a gravel path. It took a while, to get where they were going, but Ida took it as an opportunity, pushing away thoughts of what was a head to spend a little time just enjoying two of the things in this life that she loved. There would be enough time later to come back to the worry and stress.

Flowers spread beside the path, arrayed in all the colors flowers could be, and disappeared off into the grass. This far from the Tower and the wind chimes she had hung, Ida was entirely silent, save for the noises the two girls made. There wasn't even bugs to break the stillness, a fact that had once been unnerving for Ida herself. After so long, it was just another thing that blended into the picture of her asteroid in her mind, like the cloudless dome of blue that stretched over their heads and the horizon line that seemed to bend more than it should.

Hvergelmir let herself be led, trusting Ida's knowledge of her homeworld to steer them both true. In her mind, she was unconsciously charting the walkways and paths, tucking the information away with care in the vast recesses of her memory -- but the moment she noticed herself doing it, she thought: Well, that's kind of a silly waste of memory, isn't it? It's not very likely I'll ever need to find my way around on my own -- not when I can't get here without Ida.

It didn't matter. She processed and stored the information anyway.

She'd never truly had it in her to just let information fall by the wayside --even seemingly superfluous information.

"I'd love to see how well plants from here do at my Wonder," she agreed. "And some from Earth, to, for comparison. I know Babylon has plants . . . I wonder if Thraen, maybe...? I mean, you'd think, right? Gardens? You kind of hate to think of just a big sad ball of dirt floating out in space." Hvergelmir frowned briefly.

She waited to see the state of what Ida had tried to tell her she wanted to see. It was one thing to hear about it in vague terms, and another to see it for herself. And while Hvergelmir wasn't sure there was much help that she could offer in this particular situation, she did still want to get a first-hand view. Then, whether Ida liked it or not, maybe she could try reaching out to some other people for their opinions.

Ida was always too keen on carrying her burdens herself. Hvergelmir was grateful she was being offered even the smallest inroads into Ida's confidences -- but it still felt like it was only the barest start. She needed to learn that people would help her, if she let them.

"It'll feel safe again," Hvergelmir promised. "We'll work out what's going on eventually. Remember, this place has survived for thousands of years -- she's very old and very strong."

Ida frowned lightly, remembering something from encounters in the past with the Garden senshi. She wouldn't have, if Hver hadn't brought it up.

"Shoot... You remind me, talking about Thraen, that I was supposed to contact him. I just remembered that he had offered to take me to Thraen once, a long time ago. That day he called me to come visit, when he told me about Alois, I asked if I could come back to talk with him... but I never did. We've had so much... tension between us, I really wanted to just try and get to know him better." She sighed softly as they walked, gripping Hver's hand a little tighter. "I honestly did mean to go back, but... then I was taken off world and... things happened. He probably thinks I was lying to him, or being flippant... "

Her shoulders sagged a little, her eyes on the path they followed. Would it do anything to call him after so long? Would it just make it worse to keep not calling?

"He might have plants and he might share if you asked. Um... Shangri-la has lovely plants, and Maia has singing trees. A few weeks ago, a bunch of us went to Maia to help her with some sort of... chaos infection in one of the trees there. We helped her purge it and she transcended, and gave us seeds from those trees. Mine is planted here, over in the garden beside the Tower."

There was a darkness growing on the horizon, drawing closer with every step. It wasn't so much a haze or lack of light as it seemed like the color had leeched out of it, leaving it a charcoal sort of color.

"I hope you're right about this..." Ida murmured before she changed direction a little, angling off to the side. Before them spread a much smaller grove of trees that resembled the city they had come from, but more like a village than a city. There was an actual line between the living part of Ida and the dark, dead section, which is what Ida lead the Cosmos Knight to.

On one side, green grass and flowers grew as they grew every where else on Ida. On the other... the grass looked charred, the flowers dried and dead. It stretched out before them into the small village, even the trees of the buildings lacking color, their branches skeletal and bare. The whole of the place had a creeping, nerve-grating feel to it, like many malevolent eyes watching them, just out of sight.

"There isn't anything I can see to have caused this... its just... dead." She explained. "I found it the day I brought another knight here, a man named Scholomance, of Saturn. He helped me look around it, but besides the lack of living plants, it looks the same as all the rest of Ida. I cam back later because it was bothering me, and I made a mark in the grass with some spray paint just on the line."

Dark eyes on her feet, Ida tugged Hver onwards towards the line, until she stopped suddenly, her grip on her friend's hand tightening convulsively. The mark was there in the grass, a bright vibrant pink against the blackness of the dead plants. Ida swallowed, her breaths getting shorter and a little quicker.

"Its spreading..." She breathed, staring at the black that had bled inches past the mark.

Hvergelmir shook her head consolingly. "That was a difficult time," she said. "I'm sure he knew it would be hard for you -- he understood enough to know you ought to be told personally, so . . . I'm sure he understands why you might have needed some time to deal with that before you'd be comfortable dredging up old feelings again. He's been dealing with it too, so -- maybe it didn't even occur to him that so much time had gone by, either." She squeezed Ida's hand where it had squeezed tight against her own. "No one thinks anyone else is flippant here, sweetie, it's okay."

Hvergelmir wasn't yet sure what was wrong with Ida's world (other than what Ida had described), but she didn't think putting Ida in an insecure, unhappy mood would help them tackle the problem. She was agitated enough as it was -- she could do with some reassurance.

"I haven't met Shangri-la or Maia yet," she said brightly, doing her best to turn to this new topic with enthusiasm. "Will you introduce me? I'd love to meet your friends."

She wanted to focus on that -- on something upbeat and casual and positive -- not on the possibility that the Chaos infection from whatever had happened with a tree on Maia's homeworld had perhaps spread to Ida in some way.

Then she saw it. The way the sky, once so vibrant, gave way to bleak gray. Her eyes widened, a little.

They drew closer, and Hvergelmir followed the dark-haired girl down another pathway . . . and there, at the end of the path, things opened up into a proper grove town. The place looked blasted, dead and foreboding.

Hvergelmir did her best to temper her expression into something calm, and not to squeeze Ida's hand. She didn't want to worry her further. "Well," she said evenly, "we'll brainstorm together. Have you searched the rest of the asteroid, too, to see what else might've changed? Anything -- bad or good."

It was very hard, pushing down the sudden panic and fear. The feeling that something that had always been so good and pure and safe might be growing tainted, that she might be losing it... it was almost more than she could handle. This place was part of her, a constant since the very first time she had set foot on it, and losing it would be like losing a hand or a foot. Irreplaceable.

Hver's calm questions helped, giving her something to focus on that wasn't the panic and dread.

"I haven't searched yet, but I can. I haven't seen anything anywhere else or noticed any difference, but maybe I wasn't looking properly. When we walked through the little town, or whatever it is, it all seemed normal, at least for Ida. Not the same as the city, but not all that different." It was hard to keep her voice even, but the more she set her mind to considering the problem the easier it was to focus on that rather than on how scary this all was. They would figure out what was happening and find a way to fix it, she just had to believe that they could.

Ida eased her grip on Hver's hand as she realized how tight it had gotten, rearranging their fingers in mute apology, before she stepped forward and over the line. She tugged her along gently as she made for the town center, passing by buildings with their sagging doors and crunching dead grass under foot.

"The only thing I found living in here was the power collector at the center, and it wasn't even really living... but it reacted when I touched it." The memory of that made her skin crawl, but she pushed down the feeling. She didn't particularly want to relive it, but it was important that Hver knew as much as she did, in case there was something in it she had missed. That was entirely the point of a fresh view... new eyes saw things old eyes sometimes didn't.

Hvergelmir raised their twined fingers to her mouth and kissed Ida's knuckles. "It's okay," she said. "We've still got lots of time to figure this out, and plenty of resources to try looking into. Let's just take a minute, maybe take stock of our inventory. You know this place really well," she offered, because sometimes it was important just to remind people of their assets. "And the more you work at it, the more you'll remember about your world. That helps us. I know it a lot less . . . but maybe we can get our bearings."

She looked around, her eyes scanning outward to find the hard curve of the horizon line. Ida was a small world -- but that could be an advantage, perhaps. "There must be maps of this world somewhere, or a globe," she said. "Try to think of where we could find one. That would help us start."

Power collector, she thought. That was an interesting concept. Maybe something that had gone into overdrive, and was somehow draining the whole land around it? She didn't know enough about Idan technology -- and she didn't want to hazard that theory yet, without knowing more. "What do you mean by 'reacted'?" she asked. "What happened?"

It drew Ida up, feeling Hver kiss her hand and she paused for a moment, her expression softening as she watched. After a moment, the tension eased and she offered a small, fleeting smile.

Yes. They just needed to take stock, get all the information they could. There had to be a reason. Something had to have caused this and finding that would be the way to fix it.

"If there are maps and things, there are probably some back in the Tower, maybe in my offices? With, I assume, the rest of the stored information. The computers didn't work last time I tried them, though, but maybe there are hard copies." She brushed her thumb across Hver's knuckles, soothing herself with the motion as much as her friend. She tugged them back into motion then, her smile fading to be replaced with a drawn brows and thinned lips. The questions, while expected, were not pleasant to answer. Remembering the sick feel of thorns piercing her skin made her nauseous, raising the hairs on her arms.

"I touched it and a vine suddenly shot out of it. It grabbed me and wrapped around my wrist, before it grew thorns... without releasing me. I think it would have grown right up my arm if I hadn't grabbed it. Scholomance had to cut me free, but once the vine was separated from the main portion, it died and stopped moving. I remember something similar... I saw a vision of it. Vines like that grew from the beds in the Tower, in the hospital. I remember... seeing it done to a criminal, and... feeling justified at her pain. It made me feel sick to my stomach, after, both then and now."

The young woman didn't linger over any of the open doors, nor did she take any of the wandering paths. She took the both of them straight to the center of the problem, to the large, one story building of columns and arches in the middle of the town. Even from outside you could see the triple helix of wood that wound upwards from the middle of it. The walls, the wood slopes, large sections of the floor, all contained dead orchid flowers, their petals brittle enough to disintegrate to ash as the slightest brush of Ida's boot. They left a grey smudge on the white leather, but her eyes were on the center of the room.

"Orchids are important..." She said softly, paused there in the door way. "Because they are the most efficient collectors of Ida's radiant energy. This building collected the energy and it fed the surrounding homes, like a power plant."

Ida grimaced at the pun, lifting and dropping a shoulder. "I found one in the center of the Tower too... and when I stepped inside, a vine tried to trap me again. I don't know why. I haven't had any other memories to explain it. The vines have some sort of liquid in them. What hit Scholomance made his skin go numb."
