It had been another long day of school, and he wanted nothing more than to collapse on the bed with a bag of chips and procrastinate. That was the way a good, long day of school should end--him. Junk food. Comfort. Zip. And he was really looking forward to it, too. Maybe he'd fantasize, too, or doodle in the margin of his notebook. Listen to some tunes. Something to keep him occupied until the sun set and the demand for homework grew so heavy that his chest felt like it was collapsing in on itself from the stress. But as he reached into his backpack for the bag of half-eaten chips left over from lunch, his hand met a thick piece of card stock. He frowned. All of his papers were in a plastic dividing folder in a completely different pocket of his backpack. What was this doing here?

He pulled out the cardstock, a bright pink piece of paper folded into an ornate envelope. There was a heart sticker on it where a real envelope would have a stamp. It was addressed, too:

The Cute Imp Boy in Math Class
Eldritch Dorms
Asphodel Gardens Academy

There was no return address, however. He turned the envelope over to the other side, where a much larger sticker was holding it closed. He carefully loosened up the edges of the sticker and peeled the envelope open. Inside was a delicate piece of paper of the palest shade of pink. The person who had written it had written it in a fine, delicate print in red ink. His eyebrows shot up. Red? Why not pink? Sure, red was the color of passion, but red ink was a sign of a scolding. So what had the mystery letter-writer written?

Dear Cute Imp Boy,

You probably don't notice that I exist--you sit in front of me and I hardly talk at all. You don't turn around much, but when you do, my heart skips a beat. I'm nothing special, not really--just a plain girl, the kind that most boys like you would pass over in a heartbeat. I know that. But I also know that I can no longer keep my feelings for you a secret. If I do, I know my heart will break! I have to tell you now, even if you don't feel the same way I do: I love you.

I don't care if you don't love me back. I'm not the sort of person who demands everyone love her. But I feel like I have a bird stuck in my chest fighting to get out. This is the only way I know of to free it. So love me or don't love me, it doesn't matter. Just know that when I stare at you during tests, I'm not actually trying to cheat.

Love, your secret admirer~

"I'm not actually trying to cheat..." he repeated under his breath. He tried to remember. Oh! The girl in the braid! Of course! He had complained to the teacher the other day that she was trying to copy his notes. He had complained and she had been moved several seats back. Was she the girl who wrote the letter?

Suddenly procrastinating was not the thing to do. He took the letter over to his desk and wrote two notes. The first one read:

To the girl I accused of cheating on the test last week:

I recently received a letter in my backpack. If you are the one who wrote it, the other letter attached to this one is for you. If you aren't the one who wrote it, but you know the girl who wrote it, please pass the other letter on to her.

The second one, which he paper-clipped to the first one, read:

To the girl who sent me the letter:

I'm sorry if I seem to be ignoring you. I don't pick up on flirting very well. I don't know who you are, so I really don't know if I love you back. But if you would like to chase the birdy sometime--maybe go to the movies on the weekend or go to the comic book store, or do something else that you like (I don't know what you like)--then I would be happy to go with you. I would like to be your friend.

If nothing else.

With sincerity, the cute Imp boy from math class

He read the letters over again. He didn't know the girl--or the girls. She could be pranking him. Maybe not. But if someone had the courage to pour their heart out to a complete stranger--then he kind of wanted to meet them...

"What."

It was not a question, but simply a statement of complete and utter confusion as he stared at the letter in his hand. Was this.... from the boy he had tutored? No, definitely was from him. It was signed and everything. The Baphomet just stared at the letter, pulling it away as if to reveal some secret code. No. No this was as strange as it looked!

Lowering the letter, he decided to glance it over once more. Maybe then he'd understand it?

      'Dear Handsome Tutor'

Okay. He appreciated the compliment, for sure. But this already hinted at the disaster waiting to be read.

'It seemed like it was only yesterday when we ended our tutoring sessions.'

It was only yesterday.

'Yet, I already miss you. I miss the days we spent together, cradled into one another's arms as you sang the words of the textbook into my ear. '

Woah. Woah woah woah. Cradling? Did they ever.... no. And singing? He was tone deaf! There was no singing to be had!

'I long once more to return to your embrace. Our tutoring sessions brought life into my otherwise dull existence, and now I feel the grey seeping back in, tinging everything it touches. How will I survive without your beautiful voice, correcting my mistakes and enriching my life with your wisdom? Surely the multiple times I failed my tests was not because of you, but simply because your voice distracted me from your true wisdom.'

No. No, he was pretty sure they failed because he gave them the wrong answers. He didn't even like science! The only reason he tutored them was to get extra credit (which he didn't get because he had failed so horribly at tutoring them!).

'And so I ask of you this, my sweet, sweet prince. Will you return to me, my love, and open your arms once more? Perhaps this time I can be the tutor, and the subject is love. Shall I educate you, my amore? Please, send a hasty response, I await your elegant words.

      Love,
      Your soulmate'

He just stared, for a second even pondering if perhaps this was an elaborate prank. No, reading this a second time didn't fix any doubts he had. Slowly, he set it down, pushing himself from his desk. Oh no.... What was he supposed to do?! No. No he got it! He had the perfect response; a post-it note! Grabbing it, the Baphomet reached for his pen, scribbling a quick response in red ink.

'No can do. I'm busy studying for our exams. Nice letter, tho! Thanks!'

THERE. Perfect. An adequate rejection. A soft but firm let down. Surely this wouldn't cause miscommunication and absolutely not make the writer think he was considering their romantic affections seriously!

.... Right?

Nodding triumphantly, he stood up, heading to find the locker of a certain someone.

[This Nightmare found a deeply emotional letter hidden in their school bag, what kind of letter is it? How do they react? Do they react at all? What do they do about it, if anything?]

Where had all of these envelopes come from? There were at least a dozen there, and now she sat on a bench staring down at the small pile of letters that had - until moments ago; been in her bag.
"hm." Brow furrowed she couldn't help but tilt her head and rub her neck with one hand, using the other to pick up and examine each envelope closely. Well it looked like they were dated at least; so that would make things much easier.

Figuring out which was the first to be dated, that was the first to be opened, grey eyes scanning over the paper. Wait. Was this... what even was this? Words were jumbled about in a way that made it sound half like a love letter, half declaration of war. It was confusing to say the least and she wasn't quite sure how to process it.
Letter after letter was written like that, seeming to become more and more frustrated with her obvious lack of noticing the letters, they looked plain angry if she was honest. but none of them were signed! Had the person forgotten? Had they done it on purpose?
Well she didn't know who it was from. So what could she do? Shrugging she tucked each letter into their respective envelopes again and then once more into her bag. She'd address the issue properly later. Maybe if she left a return letter they'd see it next time they went to leave one... Oh that would work! and she already had ideas on how to write it out too. She could imagine it now, communicating with someone who was clearly around her a lot only through letters. Like secret pen pals or something! It was going to be fun.

Prompt: [This Nightmare found a deeply emotional letter hidden in their school bag, what kind of letter is it? How do they react? Do they react at all? What do they do about it, if anything?]

She blinked as she pulled the letter out of her bag, trying to sort out if it was something she'd put there herself, or if not, when someone had been given the chance to put it there. Then again, when she was focused on something, she was pretty focused. It could have been... literally any time she was reading or studying.

Nice paper stock, heavy, like something maybe from the art classrooms. She flipped it over, found no identifying mark other than her name, written in a neat, generic looking print that could have been anyone's. At least... to her it failed to connect itself to any face.

How... interesting. A little unnerving to be honest, and she felt a touch of anxiety race over her nerves like fast moving frost as she carefully ripped the sticker holding it shut with her nail.

The first part that caught her attention was the drawing, which sent new prickles dancing up and down her nerves and made her eyes widen. It was definitely from the art class, and she recognized the day she'd gone in to help with poses and studies in light and shadow. She'd worn only white and black to further the challenge, and whoever had done this, while not a master, had captured a powerful looking figure, sharply defined like some kind of strange, silent deity of negative space. Like some god had borrowed her face and complexion, she recognized herself only in that it had her markings, but if she possessed the qualities they'd seen, she didn't see them in herself.

Then the note at the bottom caught her eye, the same neat script, this time in pencil, with the slant of haste to it.

"Hi... you don't know me. I mean... we haven't met. We've seen each other... I mean that's stupid, you were the model for this drawing. I'm glad you were, you looked so cool. I mean... ok this is stupid. A friend of mine said you were like... hard to get to know. You're about trust and stuff. If that's ok... maybe we could um. Go out for a movie or something? I want to find out if you can trust me like that.

I want to try anyway."

The picture was signed, and the signature zipped neatly off the edge of the page where they had been in a rush to complete it, slightly at odds with the care it had been put into her backpack, but then it was hard to tell if the slight bends in the heavy stock paper were from a rush, or simply from being jostled about with her books until it had caught in one and been brought to light, poking out like a bookmark.

So she had a... not so secret admirer. That was... it was deliciously story like, but it was a gamble. It was always a gamble. But they sounded sincere...

She bit her lip, pulled out a piece of notebook paper and write down a date, and a time, and a movie. She knew exactly what backpack to slip it into, and they could figure out the rest from there.

Author's note: This does make mention of self harm, just so you know before hand

Omid waited until their Demon friend was out of sight before they started rooting around their backpack. They knew right away something was amiss when the Demon handed the satchel back to them. Omid didn't have the most unique backpack in the world, but they also really didn't want to use their poor artistic skills to decorate it, so instead they taught themselves a special knot to tie the drawstrings together so that they could pick it out in a line up of similar bags.

However, this bag was not tied up the way that they usually tied it.

First things first, Omid wanted to make sure that this was indeed their bag. Their friend said that they had left it behind in class, and this was a thing that Omid did often, but the lack of the special knot made them fearful that either their friend grabbed the wrong bag, or someone had opened it and had taken something out of it.

So far everything looked ok. All their notebooks and pens seemed to be in the proper places, and nothing seemed to be missing. As they shifted their things around to look for items, a piece of paper began to poke out of one of the notebooks. This confused Omni. They always kept loose paper in folders, not in their notebooks, so they fished the item in question out and removed the slip of paper.

Dear Omid,

the paper began. A letter? Someone got into their bag to place a letter?

I'm writing you this letter because words escape me when I try to speak them. They get caught in my throat and I can never speak my mind, even though I really do want to. These words, however, need to be said or else I fear what might happen if I don't.

Omid. You are my best and most dearest friend, so please understand that I am telling you this because I don't know who else to turn to. I know that you have the means to help me through this, even if it's finding me someone who can save me.

Omid, I hate myself. I hate myself so much. I feel alone and lost and scared and like I am slowly pushing away everyone who gives a remote care about me. I have hidden scars on my body, I've lost count on how many, trying to carve away the hate, but it does nothing other than ruin my clothes and make it hurt when I move my arms.

I'm sorry I am placing this burden on you, but I don't know who else to turn to. My parents are long gone and I have no siblings. You are the closest person to a family that I have..

I'm sorry I opened your backpack to put this letter in there. I know how you like it tied a certain way.

I'm sorry I am such a mess. I am sorry I can't do this myself.

I'm sorry

Daena

Omid was quiet for a moment before tucking the letter into their pocket. They placed the notebook back into their bag and slung it over their shoulder, not even bothering to fasten it. They knew just who to find first, and it wasn't Daena.

Omid found the door they were looking for with speed and ease and hoped that the person who was told to be behind it was there. They knocked hard and fast in hopes to gain their attention. It must have worked, because soon a demon/imp hybrid opened the door and peered out.

“Mr. Numuel,” Omid said as they removed the letter from their pocket and presented it to the academy therapist. “I need your help with something...with someone...”

It was after school, and try out meets for track had just ended. Nora was pumped and waved a hand at a couple other girls who were gathering their things to leave. She smiled briefly, pulling on new shoes. She pulled her pack from the lockers when she noticed something fall to the ground. Musing, she scooped down to grab it and was surprised that it was an envelope of some kind with flowery trim. It had to be an invitation of some kind, right? But then why would they leave it in her locker instead of just giving it to her? She peered around at the other girls but no one else seemed to have noticed nor had letters of their own.

Not sure what else to think about it, she gently lifted the top and pulled out a piece of paper, unfolding it. She blinked as she stared at the letter. She leaned toward the locker so that no one could see her reading it.

Dear Nora,

I've been trying for so long to tell you how I feel about you. I know the rumors about how you have no interest in others, but I had to let you know. From the first moment I met you, I couldn't ever get your smile out of my head. And then when you took time out of your day to help me.. it was sealed. Even if you can never find it in your heart to feel the same way, I will always love you, and until that day I will stay here.. waiting for you.

Sincerely, you're secret admirer.

Nora frowned and put the note back into the envelope. She wouldn't say she never had any interest in others.. but she always had other things to worry about or do. Did people see her as that unapproachable when it came to love? That was when it hit her, she was worrying more about what people thought about her than this poor girl's feelings. Maybe she was right, maybe they were right.. did she have no interest in other people like that?

"Dear Elliah," the paper began. A simple enough introduction to the letter she'd found in her bag. What had confused the poor bapho was how it had gotten in her bag in the first place. She had the thing on her almost always. Maybe the nightmare had gotten into her bag when she was doing a presentation in class? Or maybe it had been when she was pouring over the fashion magazines her best friend had gotten for her? Shaking her head, Elliah pulled the letter back into focus and continued to read.

"It's been months since you started taking this class and every day you've sat just a seat over from me. I didn't think much of it, but then any time I moved seats, you moved as well. If that wasn't enough, you've also chatted with me, taking an interest in my interests and complimenting me on my outfits. Then, the other day, I finally realized, you've been flirting with me. You always pick me to be in your groups and you always seem to be around just when I need perking up. I don't know why it took me so long to notice!"

This was. . .not what she had been expecting? The letter had been in a plain envelope with her name printed neatly on it. The only indication that something had been off had been the small hearts that dotted her name and the back of the envelope. Elli set the paper down and tried to think which nightmare this must be. From the sound of it, she spent an awful lot of time around this person. But. . the only nightmares that came to mind were her best friend and her best friends boyfriend. Surely it wasn't one of them? Frowning, she hurried to read the rest of it.

"After I realized this, I've tried dropping hints that I was interested, but you didn't seem to pick any of them up. So I decided that it would be best to approach you straight up about this. If you feel the same, let me know the next time we have class together."

The note had been left unsigned, undoubtedly the author had assumed she knew who it was. Unfortunately, she couldn't think of who it would be. Sighing, she set the note down and leaned back to think. She could always just sit back and wait to see whoever around her looked the most nervous and approach them. But what if that wasn't the person who had given the note to her? Ugghh!! Elliah ran her hands anxiously through her hair, internally struggling.

Abruptly she stood up, the chair clattering to the floor behind her, and slammed her hands on the table. She would just have to ask Layla to help! There were simply too many nightmares for her to guess about who this was from and then she could just set them straight. That decided, the bapho gathered up her things and left the library in search of her best friend. Left behind, those studying in the library heaved a sigh of relief. The girl hadn't been quiet as she read through the letter nor as she came to her final conclusion.

". . .Tokai, I've noticed you act the same way with your best friend that you do with your boyfriend and, to be frank, it's strange. Sure you might cuddle more with your boyfriend, but otherwise you act the exact same. Are you sure you don't have two boyfriends? If not, could you kindly back off???" Tokai read the end of the note aloud. The rest of it had been much of the same vein, like that of an observer looking at his relationships and not wanting to have any of it. The bapho frowned and bit their lip, thinking about this. It did seem like they tended to act the same way for both, but their boyfriend hadn't said anything about it, neither had their best friend. Maybe . . .they just didn't want to bring it up? Nibbling on their lip further, Tokai set the note aside and thought about what to do about it. It wasn't as if he was doing it on purpose. . .and sometimes they did think they had a crush on their best friend . . .but it wasn't as if they did anything about it!

"Ah suppose Ah'll have to find out who did this so Ah can talk with them," Tokai muttered, staring speculatively at the letter. The author had left no signature, but surely it wouldn't be hard to figure out who had written it. The note had been tucked into their bag and Tokai had found it as they were pulling out their homework. Obviously the nightmare responsible felt strongly about it, but not strongly enough to confront the bapho directly. "Or maybe I should just have a chat with my bf and best friend about it?" There was a third option. . .to simply ignore it and go on as they pleased. The junior spent a good twenty minutes debating what they should do about it, flipping back and forth between their options. With a frustrated sigh, Tokai tucked the letter away and resigned to think about it later. It would have to wait, this homework was due tomorrow and it wouldn't!

Robin was dreading reading through the letter they'd found in their bag. Their name had been scrawled in a familiar handwriting across the front and small hearts dotted the back of the envelope. There was no doubt this was from their ex. They had broken up a few weeks ago; Robin had gently but firmly let them down. Or so they had believed. But the moment they had pulled this out they had known something had gone wrong. Rearranging their feathers, they got more comfortable in bed and mentally prepared themselves to read it.

"Robin, my darling, my sweet."

Oh no, this was already looking grim.

"I know you told me that we were no more, but I can't stop thinking about you. You are the light in my life, the one I want to be with. I know you feel the same, you've been giving me those looks when you thought I wasn't looking. You know the ones. I know I've been on your mind as well and I think we should get back together. Meet with me at our spot, you know the one. I have something for you that I know you'll just love.

I can't wait to see you again emotion_bigheart
Reg XOXOXO"

The letter was cheesy and just like her. Robin rubbed her hand against her face and blew out an exasperated breath. She had been interested in the other fallen, at first, but the more they got to know them the less interested they were. It had been that way with most of their relationships. Reg was the only one to actually give her a letter and try to get back with the fallen once they'd deemed it over. "Reg, I swear to Nine!" she cursed softly but with feeling. Throwing herself back onto her bed, she stared at her ceiling. There was just nothing for it. They would ignore the letter and ignore Reg and hope she got the message. With that in mind, she hopped out of bed and promptly tore the letter up before dumping it into the trash. There, that was taken care of.

Now on to much more interesting things, like her new history book on the 50 year war. Grabbing up the book, she curled up into bed with her vespercat and a cup of ice water and started pouring over the new tome.

Prompt: Nepheline blinked owlishly as she pulled a neatly folded bit of paper from her bookbag. It wasn't anything she'd put in there. It wasn't even addressed. Curious about what someone would possibly have to write to her about, the demon found a quiet spot on the grounds and opened the letter.

And immediately felt tears prickling her eyes. Oh no, this letter hadn't been meant for her. She wasn't even sure who'd written it. There are about three others who sat near her in most of her classes. Closing her eyes briefly, she took a deep breath before reading the letter again.

I miss you so much. Every minute of every day I think about you and wish you were still here. There's so much to tell you about and every time I start to write to you, I remember you're gone and you're never going to read letters or write to me again. Who's going to give me away now when I get married, huh? It's not fair! Why did you have to get sick and pass? It's not fair. You were a good person. You didn't deserve to be sick. I didn't deserve to lose you. I miss you so much, poppa. And your birthday is coming up and I'm never going to get to tease you about getting old anymore. I wish you were here...

Nepheline couldn't read anymore. It just wasn't right to intrude on another person's grief like this. Especially when she didn't know who it was who'd written the letter. Thinking hard, she tried to trace her steps, to determine who might have written this. After a few moments, she had it.

The library. She'd sat at a large shared table and the whole group had had papers scattered everywhere. She must have scooped the letter up by accident when she'd rushed to pack up her things. Carefully re-folding the letter, Nepheline held it tight as she grabbed her bag and raced for the library. Anyone who sounded as sad and hurt as the writer wouldn't just shrug it off once they discovered their letter was missing. And, just as she'd suspected, she saw a younger imp at the table, frantically flipping through the books still laying there.

"I think this is yours," she said holding out the paper. "I'm sorry, I must have grabbed it by mistake."

She wanted to say more, but wasn't sure what would be acceptable. Instead, she handed the letter over, and took a risk, pulling the imp close in a hug before letting go and fleeing the library.

It was a day like any other day, Keira was smiling and talking to a few other students, waving them off as they gathered their things to leave for their dorms. She smiled to herself and snatched her backpack from the locker and stuffed some of her sketches inside when she realized there was something in her folder that hadn't been there before. She felt excitement well up in her stomach as she fished the envelope out and opened it. Reading it, her whole face lit up in a smile and she almost jumped with enthusiasm. It was a love letter! She had never received one before, even when some of the other girls in her classes had talked about getting their own and how tiresome they were. How could they be tiresome? Wasn't it joyous to know that someone else thought about you?

After finishing the note, she folded it back up and put inside her notebook. They wanted to meet tomorrow! She almost squealed but reminded herself that she shouldn't annoy the other kids. So she grabbed her sack and zoomed toward her room. The rest of the night she was spent picking out clothes and every detail of her hair and accessories when she noticed how her stomach began to turn. She sat back on her bed and blinked when she began to realize just how nervous she was. What if they didn't like her? What if her clothing wasn't perfect? What if she said something wrong?

The rest of the night was spent in a fitful slumber, her stomach twisting in knots that not even she could explain. She shuffled off to class in an exhausted state, and when it came time for the meeting, her nerves got the best of her. She stood nearby, watching but refused to make herself known. She couldn't. What if they hated her? She shook her head and excused herself back to her dorm before she could even find out who it might be, maybe the other girls were right... feeling this way.. was definitely too much trouble.

Kara turned the envelope over constantly in her hand. She still hadn't fully understood why the note was placed in her knapsack, or what she was supposed to do about it. So she had come to one of her friends for advice and the guy seemed confused on why she was even asking.

"So let me get this straight, you got this note and you're asking me what you should do about it?" He shrugged and leaned against the wall, just staring at her. "Why are you asking me?"

She frowned, shaking her head back and forth. "Because I don't understand." Kara lifted the note and handed it to him. "They talk about love like it's... something to be... affectionate with? I don't know, it doesn't make any sense."

He gave her an almost deadpan stare and took the note from her, scanning it quickly. "Look Kara, if this guy likes you, maybe you should write him back, or return the feelings, it's not like you have guys all over you or something."

"What is that supposed to mean?" She glared, pulling her arms over her chest in an almost defensive move. "Just... explain it to me.. You've had girlfriends before.. what does love mean?"

Her friend frowned and handed her back the note. "It's not something that can really be explained. It's like... you want to spend the most time that you can with the person, you can't stop smiling when you're near them.. and when you aren't with them.. all you can do is think about them. You just... have to experience it for yourself."

She tried to process everything he was saying but she couldn't. It didn't make any sense to her. Why would you want to be that close to someone. "So it's like.. being friends with someone and wanting to hang out with them?" It was the closest conclusion she could come up with.

He let out an audible sigh. "No, Kara, it's not." He moved from the wall and came closer to her, leaning down enough that his face was next to hers, "It's like.. wanting to be so close to the person... that you lose yourself in their eyes.." He was really close now, close enough that their noses were almost touching.

In an instant, Kara became extremely uncomfortable and shifted from her position so that there was some room between them. "I... I guess.." She rubbed the back of her arm in nervous gesture. "I just.. I don't know if I could ever feel that way about someone.. y'know?" She gave a strained smile and lifted her backpack to her back. "But umm... thanks for the chat.. I'll hit you up later, alright?" She didn't even wait for his reply before hurrying out of the room. She never wanted to be in that situation again.

Another one. Seriously?! Evie frowned as she stared up at the note in her hands. This was the third one in less than a month. She wasn't trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but she was beginning to think this was a prank. Oh yeah, pick on the asexual girl. It wasn't like she kept it a secret that she didn't feel romantically towards people, it didn't mean she wasn't a person. She saw their stares at school, people calling her a Robot or the Ice Queen. She did have feelings, she knew what it was like to be rejected, to feel alone.. But that didn't mean she wanted to have a significant other.

She rolled over, tears were starting to sting her eyes. Did they not realize these things hurt? She just wanted them to let her be. So that was it, she was going to make them realize what kind of things they were putting her through. She got up and started writing a letter.

Dear Whomever it Concerns,

Please, leave me alone. If you really care about me, if you really want me to smile, and to be a better person... Then stop. Seriously. I'm more than willing to continue on with my life in ignorance to the way of "romance". Can't you see how much your little prank hurts? I'm not emotionless as people would believe me to be. So stop your silly little thoughts. I'm not interested.

I'm sorry if this is cold, and I don't want to hurt your feelings.. But I'm tired of constant barrages over my sexuality. I'm living with this, not you. Don't pretend you know me. And if you really do want to get to know me like you claim to.. then be my friend, that's what I need, not a romantic partner.

Sincerely,
Evie.

She folded the paper and went back to her locker, taping it on the door. Yeah, maybe someone else would get it than whoever left her the note, but maybe they'd finally get the idea.
