Starts: Now

Ends: October 9th

On the far reach of the world there lives a true fable. Woods twisted and blackened have lived in this area so ancient that no one remembers a time the woods were young. The winds that blow cause an eerie whispering sound. Is that even the wind? Or the souls of old the woods have collected over time.

These are the disappearing woods. They only appear during the month of October only to disappear after the month is over.

Why this happens it is not clear.

What is clear is that it is October when the seasons begin to change and Gryphons from all reaches of the lands get ready for that special day on October thirty first where they dress up and scare each other. Oh, and there are all kinds of treats to be had too.

But some Gryphons are thrill seekers. It s a long lived tradition that Gryphons test their bravery by sneaking in to the woods to see what they can find.

---------------------------------------

OC Prompt Rules

You do not need to own a Gryphon to play. Make a gryphon up for the sake of prompt writing with a note you don't own one. One may find its way to you.

You may not proxy write. Everyone needs to write their own prompt.

This is a multi - level prompt. There will be two more prompts but you can only carry on if you've made it through the first round.

This round you have three lives. If you can't make it through after three tries you're out.

Prompts need to be at least 200 words. (Thats not much. They can be longer of course too.)

You can either post in this thread or start your own thread. Up to you.

Before you begin to write your prompt roll the dice to see what kind of journey your gryphon will be getting.

Roll Options
* Roll a six sided dice

1 - You are able to make it a bit of the way through before you hear whisperings in the winds. What ever they are whispering it sounds like a warning. (( You can either flee or continue forward.))

2 - You're able to make it pretty far into the woods before you stumble across some very recent Gryphon sized bones. You hear a grumbling in the distance. (( You can either flee or continue forward.))

3 - You get completely lost. It seems like you've been walking in circles for hours and now you're hungry and thirsty. You see a new path but it takes you back to the beginning. (( Forced Flee ))

4 - You've had no trouble at all so far and you've made it through the woods with little to no trouble. You seem like you got this until you trip over a vine and are sucked down a cavern. When you come to you're at the beginning of the forest again. (( Forced Flee ))

5 - You haven't been having an easy time since you stepped paw/claw in these woods. You swear that the winds have been howling warnings at you this entire time and even worse there seems to be a shadowy figure thats been following you. This isn't your imagination either, you've seen it in the corner of your eye this whole time. Tensions building. (( You can either flee or continue forward.))

6 - You've been doing fine and are deep in the woods now. A dark mist has appeared and made it harder and harder to see where you're going. Some how you got so turned around that you're back at the beginning again. (( Forced Flee ))

Life 1 - continuing forwards

Steren cautiously moves through the woods, he had never seen this phenomenon before and he was intensely curious. Woods that appeared only during one month, how strange. He already saw some younger Gryphons running about, practicing their scary faces for the end of the month. He glared at them and they skittered out of his way. He moved forwards by himself, stopping when he heard whispering. They were almost warning him from going further, well Steren wasn't about to listen to anyone but himself so he forged on ahead, ignoring the whispers.

5: Continuing Forward

Kywix had been having a hell of a time getting through this forest. Twice she ended up back at the start and had to begin all over again. First she was doing rather well, having almost no problems....and then she tripped on a vine and got sucked down some weird cavern. Second try she thought she for sure had it in the bag, making sure to watch where she stepped and then a strange fog rolled in. It was so thick she could hardly see her beak in front of her and ended up getting turned around somehow and wound right back up at the beginning again. But she wasn't quitting just yet! Oh no, this forest had some mystery to it and she wanted to figure it out. At least, that was her goal anyways. Whether or not she'd do it remained to be seen. Especially since something seemed to be following her now, always staying just out of sight to where she couldn't make out any details. But just as having to start over didn't deter her, neither did this shadowy figure! Turning, she glared hard at it, flicking her tail a few times before picking up a paw/claw and continuing forward.

Prompt 5 - Vex will continue forward.

Vex was not amused. Not at all. Grumbling, he padded forward- deeper into the misty unknown. The darkness wouldn't normally frighten him, but for some reason the ghastly stories told by the others by the entrance had gotten right under his skin. Normally brave and proud he found himself shrinking to a smaller size- as small as he could physically make himself, he was very aware that his bright pelt stood out like a beacon in the darkness. That and he was sure that there was someone... Some-thing following him. He didn't have much to go on, but the occasional cracking of twigs made him jump, and his eyes (still clouded from the fires lit outside the entrance to the forest) were playing tricks on him. The wind curling round the trees played a staccato melody with the khaki leaves, and though he knew there was no one really howling and groaning at him he could feel his muscles tense anyway. Shaking his head he tried to steel his thoughts. There was no such thing as spooks or demons haunting the forest, and he was determined to prove it. That and the adulation of his peers would be a sweet reward indeed...

User Image It was curious, this patch of woods. Others told her it only appeared once a year. Some said it was haunted.
But she also hadn't heard of Gryphons disappearing. Only tales of the wood, and it's strange disappearing act. A few tales spoke of strange sounds from the wood, the wind in the branches, but that same sound was heard by younglings on stormy nights from the same trees they played in. It was in the mind, not the tree. So that didn’t seem so bad, so dangerous. It just seemed mysterious, and mysteries spawned curiosity. Curiosity needed to be satisfied. And while curiosity may have killed the cat, what most people forgot was that satisfaction brought it back.

And Persea loved the forest, the trees, and woods. It all lead to the inevitable conclusion that these woods must be explored. She entered unapprehensive, but watchful, as the mist between the trees made it harder to see. The canopy of the trees obscured the light, only letting a faint glimmer through here or there. They were so old, these trees, so large. So many years they must have spent growing. Unfortunately she wasn't too far in before she tripped, having been staring at the tree canopy, and fell into a hole...And was somehow back at the entrance?

Persea shook some of the dark dirt from her feathers and fur, proof that she had indeed fallen and not just been lost in thought. She had not imagined the whole thing. Why did it happen, her being sent back? Did the woods not like her? Impossible. Plants may be alive, but they didn’t FEEL, not like other creatures did.

She moved forward, determined to find out the secret here. She was more convinced now that there WAS a mystery in these woods. For good or bad, Persea felt the need to find it out. If it was bad, Persea thought, maybe she could help? She wasn’t sure, but you could never know anything new if you did not try. Once again, nothing stood out. The woods remained dark and still, quiet. The space between their trunks opened up in a clear path, it seemed. She began to pick up her pace between the dark trees, looking ahead instead of at her feet. That was her downfall, as another root tripped her. A hole that hadn't been there opened up underneath and again left her at the edge of the forest.

She now stared at the woods a moment, dark trees standing tall, firm. It didn't seem like they could move, but she knew they were alive somehow. All plants were, they grew! Some even liked music!

"Why?" She shouted at them, not because she was angry, but because she wasn't sure they could hear. "Why do you want to keep me out? What did I do? Or did someone else do something to you?"

And since she wanted to know why, and the trees after a while remained silent, she ventured back between them. For a third time they closed around her, and she continued on, searching for why. The dark woods were silent for a while. Quietly a wind began to blow through the branches, softly rustling them, rubbing them against one another. It almost sounded like words, almost. It almost sounded ominous. She paused, looking up at the trees around her. They still didn’t look like they could move, and it was the wind. Maybe that was the only way they could speak? If they could speak.

But Persea just wanted to know why, and she wouldn't find out by turning back. She kept going, and let the wind rustle the branches around her.

He could do this. Theodore felt confident that he would make it deep into the forest, and he was actually doing pretty good. He wasn't the bravest of his kind by far, but he didn't see himself as a scaridy cat either. Plus he had told his younger sister that he could do it, and he wasn't about to let her win the bet they made. He would win, no matter what. As he walked further and further he wished that he had brought someone with him, that would help pass the time. It was kind of boring being alone.

He was pretty far into the woods when he spotted Gryphon sized bones, and they didn't look like they had been there very long. He paused and heard grumbling in the distance. He knew that he could still turn back, that would mean not facing whatever was making that noise, but he had already come so far. No he decided to continue on and go deeper into the forest. He had come this far and wasn't going to chicken out now! However he moved quickly, trying to put as much space between him and whatever was making that creepy noise as possible!

Quote:

So you've made it through the rolls and mini prompts. You're almost home free! Below you'll find personalized NPC Responses.

A wild looking Gryphon has revealed himself.

User Image

He's taken off. Its up to you to catch him and find out what is going on.

Rules are Simple

You're only included if you were quoted. If you were not quoted it was either because you rolled a flee or your prompt did not meet the length required.

    Roll one 100 sided dice.

The person who rolls the highest wins. By default if you roll a 100 and are the first to roll a 100 you will be the one to catch up to our wild Gryphon. (Yes the person who catches up with him will ultimately keep him as their own).

Include a small response. This time there is no minimal length you can make as long or as short as you like.

The game will end October 12th or when everyone has had a chance to roll / respond.
And then we'll find out if old man jenkins is really behind all of this.

Rolled 1
Prompt:
You are able to make it a bit of the way through before you hear whisperings in the winds. What ever they are whispering it sounds like a warning. (( You can either flee or continue forward.))

NPC Response

Quote:
The winds only got stronger as the gryphon would find if she continued forward. The trees wavered in the winds giving the effect that the woods were infact haunted. Stronger and stronger the winds got until as fast as they started a sudden stop happened.

From out of the shadows stepped a dark wild looking gryphon. Seeing the other he lifted a brow. Quickly he turned and took off deeper into the woods. The winds started back up again.

Rolled 2
prompt:
You're able to make it pretty far into the woods before you stumble across some very recent Gryphon sized bones. You hear a grumbling in the distance. (( You can either flee or continue forward.))

You don't have a gryphon but you participated anyways. I like that so please take this Gryphon as your own. Could be Theodore or could be another gryphon. Up to you. : ) Welcome.

NPC Response

Quote:
The dark gryphon was sure he'd gotten away unscene. Or at least he hoped he had. Maybe he wasn't paying attention but he stepped on the tail end of a bone which caused it to smack him square in the face. He groaned. Loudly. The echo was tremendous and even spooked him a little. WHAT!?

Not only that but he heard something else moving. Not paying attention to the direction the sound was coming from he took off almost running into another gryphon on his way out.

Rolled 5
prompt:
You haven't been having an easy time since you stepped paw/claw in these woods. You swear that the winds have been howling warnings at you this entire time and even worse there seems to be a shadowy figure thats been following you. NPC Response
Quote:
The combination of the random fogs and winds was enough to make a gryphon on edge. Already the dark gryphon had encountered two others in these woods. He wasn't sure if he should have ran but now wasn't the time for such thoughts.

Some one was up ahead. Not wanting to be scene he did his best to hide in the shadows, badly. He followed the figure for a while until a glare found his way. Frozen for a moment he slinked back into the brush. Maybe there was some one else in the woods.

The Menacing Zebrula

response:

NPC Response
Quote:
Another gryphon up in the distance. Debating, the gryphon weighed the pros and cons of approaching the other. The winds made his decision for him and back to badly shadow stalking he went. Maybe this male could help him? He sure looked like he could handle a place like this.

Maybe it was the winds or the echoing breaking of twigs but something spooked the wild looking gryphon and he was off.
