Medical Ward: Running the Triage

As an Officer, you are in charge of several new recruits that all think they're doctors now. They are not doctors. You are not a doctor. But at least now you have the experience to make them do the grunt work, while you - well, you get to play doctor a little bit.

Thankfully, there's a real doctor there to stop you from messing anything up too badly. Time to show him what you've learned.

You must write 500 words total for this quest!

Step One: Inserting an IV
-Roll 1d4
-The first dice indicates how many times you had to try to find a working vein to insert the IV into. Are you too squeamish to insert IVs? You may instead ask the doctor to do it - though he won't be happy about your ineptitude - and take the modifier for 4 automatically instead of rolling.

1. First try. +5 points
2. Two tries isn't awful... +3 points
3. He's not a pincushion, man. +0 points
4. Wow, that just.. wow. The doctor takes the IV away and does it himself. -3 points

Step Two: Disinfecting a wound
-Roll 1d6

1. Did you just.. disinfect the wrong side of his body? Did you not even notice that there wasn't a wound there? -3 points
2-5. Using gauze and antiseptic fluid, you manage to clean up the wound and prepare it adequately. +1 point
6. Not only did you just disinfect the wound, but you snagged a piece of glass out with your gauze. That could have been dangerous. Nice job! +5 points

Step Three: Comfort
-Roll 2d4-4

0. You accidentally knocked your elbow into your patients healing injury. -5 points
1. You and your patient don't speak. You simply have a stare down. -3 points
2. It's awkward, but a pat and a kind word can go a long way.. sometimes. +1 point
3. You've got a great bedside manner. +3 points
4. Whatever you said to that patient cheered him up so much, he walked right out fully healed. Are you a wizard? +10 points

After weeks of stocking and restocking the Med bay, it was time to actually put to use all of the medical knowledge Lola had learned (here and there, of course) from the prison's doctor.

The first patient who arrived was severely dehydrated. She knew this meant it would be pretty tricky to put in an IV, but the patient was in dire need of fluids.

After applying the tourniquet, she began to tap his arm, seeking out the perfect vein to use. It took a few moments, but one managed to appear that she felt comfortable sticking.

Holding her breath, she inserted the needle into his skin...waited...pushed....there!

Grabbing a flush, she tested her newly placed IV. Blood return? Yes ma'am!

IV placement on the first try - what a great start to the day!

The next victim, er, patient to arrive had a nasty looking wound on his right leg. He was quick to assure both Lola and the doctor that the wound had not come from one of the undead roaming around in the city, but instead due to his own ineptitude. Apparently, he'd taken a nasty fall when attempting to fix something outside on the prison's wall.

"You're lucky you didn't break anything," Lola said, half muttering the comment in dismay. For the man to have fallen from any significant height to great such a spot on his leg, it was a wonder how he hadn't at least fractured a bone. Not that she knew what bones were in the leg to begin with - she wasn't a science geek, she just knew how to patch people up!

Soaking the gauze with antiseptic fluid, she began to dab at the wound. There was debris in the wound, she could tell that much, and she did her best to clean and remove all the dirt and grime that could potentially infect the leg further, exacerbating the injury.

"Do you think I'm fixable, Doc?"

Lola smiled at the young man. His face had worry etched through and through it, as he was clearly concerned that his infection could spread, creating a far worse situation. He didn't have to say what he was thinking - will I turn into one of them?

Spotting one of the rolling chairs, she wheeled it next to the table he lay on. Gently taking one of his hands in both of hers, she began to pat it reassuringly. She didn't say anything at first, choosing instead to laugh softly, shaking her head.

"You're not going to become that kind of infected. You hurt your leg - that's it. We've got it cleaned up and bandaged, so there hopefully won't be any kind of infection that comes of it...and if there is, it won't be the kind that'll have you hungry for brains."

The fact she was the one to bring up the topic of zombies seemed to bring him relief. "So what do we do now?"

Rubbing the top of his hand, she tilted her head in the direction of the doctor. "He's searching for any tetanus shot we might have in the supplies. It'll hopefully help prevent you from getting anything nasty...normal nasty."

He smiled, returning the laugh.

"Thanks, Doc."

She was exhausted.

The night had been a long, toiling evening of restlessness and anxiety. She'd worried too much about their future, about this apocalypse, about the roach she'd seen crawling across the cell floor (of course a freakin' roach would survive the apocalypse, why the heck not). Sleep did not come to Lola Malcom and it was evident that morning in the Med bay.

The first patient to arrive was not a welcomed sight. He had fallen and injured his head (what was with all the falls going on??) and the doctor had told her to place an IV before they began treating the former prisoner. It was protocol. She'd aced it the day before. Easy peasy.

She bent down, studying the man's arm. Trying to find a vein, she gave it a shot. And then another. And then a third. Each time, the vein ended up blowing.

The doctor, quite irritated by this point, shoved her aside and did it himself.

Oops.

It was time to disinfect the wound.

Now this...this would be easy to do. It didn't involve needles or sticking people or actual concentration (okay, maybe a little concentration), so Lola's confidence slowly began to rise once more.

She soaked the gauze in disinfectant, letting the material get good and damp before taking the bottle away. Beginning to dab at the wound, she examined the damage and began to pick the debris clean from the site. The patient winced with every touch, reducing her force against his head until she was barely touching it at all. It took longer than she would have liked, but she wanted to ensure that the patient was as comfortable as possible.

You know, since she'd already stabbed him several times with a needle, anyhow.

The exhaustion was getting to her and it was becoming abundantly clear to those around her. Hips were bumping into things, hands were knocking over things, she couldn't keep things together. She moved to cover her mouth as a giant yawn escaped and Lola realized she was finding it exceedingly difficult to keep her eyes opened.

The patient was resting now, his head bandaged (by the doctor - Lola had watched him get stitched up and bandaged accordingly, all the while fighting sleep). He would remain in observation status at least for another hour (or until a more dire situation arose, in which he would have to forfeit his uncomfortable cot).

Lola rose from the patient's bedside, having decided her next task was to find some water - surely sipping water would keep her awake. It took some doing to find some fresh water, with additional fumbling thanks to her sleepiness, but she managed to succeed and bring a cup back for both herself and the patient. As she moved to take her seat next to him once more, a wayward elbow dinged the poor patient directly onto his newly stitched head wound.

As he issued out a pained howl, the doctor issued an order to his incompetent nurse.

"OUT."
