Ice-Cold Codger

The sight of the hospital gave Matt a nostalgic feeling as he checked over the female lying on the ground making sure that her overall health was ok. She wasn’t unconscious, but more so in a deep sleep. He tried a few things, like yelling or pinching her but nothing seemed to wake her up. It was going to a huge amount of joy having to drag her back to the portal slowly he thought considering that there was at least ten kilometers away from it. He pinched the bridge of his nose as he tried to think of a better solution; nothing came to mind other than maybe lifting her up on to his back to carry her there. The solution of taking a car did cross his mind but considering how much debris and heavy fog lingered around it seemed more dangerous and time consuming than carrying her.

Crouching down turned her over as gently as possible and then lifted her arms up to his shoulders before pulling the rest of her up on his back. Leaning over he looped her legs under his arms and tired to straighten as much as possible before she would topple over backwards. The only bright side she had was the fact that she wasn’t as heavy as she could have been. He could only guess she was about five foot, four to five inches, and only about hundred and ten pounds at most. If it wasn’t for the fog draining away his power, Matt could have easily sprinted with her, but that was out of the question now. Instead he would have to just take his time walking as he did his best not to drop her.

Heading back into the fog was even harder to deal with now that he bore extra weight and lack maneuverability. Earlier he could easily dodge undying and avoid the cracks but carrying someone he had to think of how not to drop them while even doing something as simple as jumping. At one point he had tripped over a piece of debris almost knocking him and dropping the girl on the ground, not something he had wanted to do on a rescue mission. Him tripping was normal, dropping the patient was not something he wanted to explain when he got back to base camp. Shifting his weight he kept walking, the girl still completely unaware of what was going on to her as she slumbered. The simple question arose to his mind if the vines were causing the comatose sleep, and exactly how long had they been asleep then. At some point they had obviously been awake, the state of their clothes, the items they had, it seemed as if they had been through something after the urban decay had started. Of course the only way to get any real answer was to get them awake and Matt didn’t have a solution for that.

The soft glow of the portal could be seen from a few yards away as Matt kept a steady pace in it’s direction. Soon he would be able to drop her off and no longer walk like a hunchback across the decaying city. Stepping through he expected to see the soaked picnic tables, tall trees and various other hunters standing around waiting for their next task in handling the situation. Instead he found himself standing in the middle of a road, fog still curled around faintly among the forgotten cars. Not far from the highway, among the smaller office buildings stood a skyscraper covered in the same vines from the cracks in the road. A disgruntled look showed on Matt’s face as he continued to look up noting the shattered top, as if some large explosion had taken place. His eyes twitched as it hurt to continue to look at it too long, whatever had caused it was likely related to the vines.

Muttering under his breath Matt started to head in a direction while trying to, in a clumsy nature; pull out the map to figure out their new location. Pausing he started to open before looking over at the ground, watching as the small pebbles began to shake across the road. Soon the vibrations grew up to his knees as everything else around continued to shake with growing velocity. Turning around his eyes widen as he realized the source of the noise.

The large creature easily loomed over, its body glowing a faint green as various tendrils stretched and wrapped around giving it the impression of a living plant horse. There was no sense of fear from the creature, just something created from a whole new source of energy as Matt summoned his weapon.

s**t..s**t..s**t… The word kept repeating as the beast drew even closer, its tendrils unraveling, stretching out to him and the civilian he carried.

It is not natural for you to accept us?

It barged into his head, the words breaking through as images of people flooded his mind. The look of fear, hatred, despair, loathing of everything their faces, emotions, continued to play faster and faster in Matt’s mind as blood started to drip slowly from his nose. It hurt, all of it burned as he fell to one knee on the concrete almost dropping the body he was holding.

“Stop, stop it, I said stop.” Fingers wrapped tighter around his spear as he held himself up from crumpling to the ground in pain. Kasi’s voice was yelling somewhere, trying to push out the creature with as much force as she could give.

Its tendrils reached out, stretching in attempt to consume him whole as Matt sliced through them ignoring as they withered in pain. Run, run, get the hell out of here… His feet starting to move before he could think of the words sprinting the opposition direction of the beast horse. It was even harder to run, carrying the load of the an unconscious person on his back while still trying to keep the tendrils away from the both of them. Shoes pounded across the pavement as the footsteps of the horse continued to grow closer, the throbbing pain in his head growing each moment he was near it. He ignored the taste of blood as it continued to drip, he tried to focus on where he was going, striking out as the vines tried to wrap around him.

Matt needed a better plan, something better than just merely running.

The ground shook even more as the vines from the skyscraper snapped and whipped about, the ones in the ground joining in its movement as pavement easily cracked under its power. He didn’t have time to stare at the amazement of how the former decaying city now turned into a horror like rose garden.
<********> The woman’s body was shifting still threatening to fall off his back as he tried to dodge the vines on the open road. There was nowhere to hide, nowhere to keep her safe so he could at least defend himself not with his weapon no longer holding its real form. No there had to be better plan than continuing to barely escape the creature grasp, and with the whole city turning into a weapon he needed something even faster. Despite all the months he spent running, the fog sapping his power and the extra weight his body was starting to grow heavier as his breath was labored.

No he needed something with more speed, something that wasn’t a puny little Honda civic or an old clunker left abandoned along the road. No what he needed was the pretty new Ferrarri painted in the most lovely shade of only what he could call as hooker red, left abandoned along the stretch of road not far from a pile of various other cars.

“Please, please, please, please let there be car keys left, please let it have been some poor sod that abandoned it without taking the keys out.” Matt put all of his hope into giving one last push of running to put some distances between him and the beast as his hopes were muttered under his breath. As he grew closer he could see the flash of silver dangling from the steering column from the open door of the passenger side of the car. He without any gently motion threw the woman into the car slamming the door before running around to the other side. Turning the key, he muttered even more hope for luck under his breath worried that after sitting for so long it wouldn’t crank anymore.

Second try it started up, purring with acceleration as Matt quickly stretched the seatbelt over the woman and than him. It may have been unnecessary but there was little question that despite the car’s glorious figure and speed that he wanted a little safety. The tires spun as he slammed his food down on the gas, it squealed as it peeled off as Matt gave a little crooked grin of amusement. Never in his life would he ever been able to afford such a car, and despite both their lives in danger it just added to the excitement of being able to drive at whatever speed down the highway. A voice crackled over the headset, giving the new location of the portal to meet at.

Matt kept his foot heavy on the pedal, as he tried to avoid the other cars left abandoned along the highway. The beast, despite it size had been able to keep up rather well to the car as it sped along the road. He kept looking for anywhere to turn off to give it a slip somewhere, and only for a moment he took his eyes of the road. Looking back he realized almost too late the deep crack along half the road from where the vines had ripped up for the ground. He slammed on the brake and jerked the wheel over trying to avoid it to the best of his ability.

Vine slammed into the car causing it to whip around, tires squealing along the damp the pavement before skidding to a halt into the highway barrier. Everything in his body hurt as his chest screamed in pain from the seatbelt as his head started to throb and scream.

s**t… that’s going to leave a mark. Muttering he slammed his foot down on the gas pedal again ignoring the painful shrieks of metal grinding along the barrier. It was almost heart wrenching knowing he had ruined such a beautiful car, but there was nothing he could do about it at this point.

Most of the rest of the road had a clear path and Matt was able to lose the oversized thorn horse somewhere back in the fog. It was not on his list not to have to deal with again considering the unusual nature of it. If it wasn’t for the fact that cutting a piece of the vine off would alert the beast Matt would have tried to collect a sample but there was no way in hell he was doing it now. The last kilometer Matt started to slow the car down, looking over at the woman still in the passenger seat. She was the lucky one he thought, being able to sleep through the entire ordeal; she probably didn’t even feel the damage they had sustained when they slammed into the barrier. Reaching the portal Matt put the car in park looking over the dashboard. If it hadn’t been damaged he would have loved to take it with him through the portal and back to Deus. Not that he would really know what he would have done with it there. Probably would have resulted more or less fighting with other hunters just to be able to do a couple of donuts out in the training yard.

Letting out a deep sigh he unbuckled his seat belt and got out of the car. There was a grim look on his face as he looked at the wrecked side, half of the paint was gone leaving the ugly base underneath. Opening the door he leaned in to unbuckle her seatbelt and lifted her up like a princess in his arms. Looking down he looked at her bright green eyes staring up at him, how cute…

“What the hell?” Something was wrong.

She started to scream at him, some sort of language that resembled gibberish while squirming around in his arms. When she started to hit him with her fist he quickly put her down holding his hands up backing away slowly from her. “Sorry, sorry, sorry. I didn’t realize you were awake I was just trying to get you to safety.”

Her bright green eyes stared at him, looking around franticly before repeating something over and over again. She grew closer to him still screaming the same question at him before hitting him over and over again with her fist on his chest. Matt did absolutely nothing, letting her take out her confusing and rage on him until she was satisfied. Tears where streaming down her face as she started to sob cling to his coat pressing her face into his vest.

“Look I’m sorry, I don’t know what your saying but we have to go. If we don’t we will be stuck here and trust me you don’t want to be stuck here any longer in this fog and that giant horse thing.” Matt tried to get her to walk closer to the portal but she just screamed at him and shook her head, a look of determination was on her face. He reached for her hand, to pull her, drag her, whatever to get her over to the portal but she snatched it back and tried to return a swift kick at him.

“Fine, fine if we have to do it that way fine.” He huffed before lunging forward wrapping his arms around her and lifting her up off the ground. She kept screaming and kicking, struggling to get out of his arms but it was to no avail. Matt turned around and started to make his way to the portal when he saw it flickered out of sight.

“s**t.”

The girl was asleep in his arms again, great. What a ******** day.
