He assessed the young girl a few yards away from the portal, behind a large piece of what had probably once been part of a building rooftop: below average height, well layered for the cold, decently stocked for survival by the looks of her backpack. There was even a radio, though for the moment it was silent. Stuck in his pensive mood, Jack chose not to breach that silence and instead went on to make sure the girl wasn't going to bleed out on him or something before he moved to his next objective.

At the very least she didn't weigh a lot. Once he was sure nothing was out of place, Jack tossed his captive over his shoulder and waded through the fog back towards the portal. Owain wouldn't stop murmuring about the vines, a nonstop this cannot be there is something wrong dear one this virus is more than a plague but an abomination this cannot--

The air was wrong on the other side. It was still dreary in weather and broken down in the background, but it wasn't where he had last been: ahead stretched a spine of highway rather than the wet picnic of a base camp he had arrived at. Worse, Jack felt himself grow light headed; the fog was tampering with them somehow, great.

Luckily, the girl was as lightweight as a cardboard box, even when weighed down with so much stuff. He had to switch her into his arms proper, however.

And right as he did, he saw the giant horse-like creature made of vines.

< OUT! > Owain was enraged, wounded, and bewildered all at once, and it just seemed to intensify the stream of images and emotions that coursed through them like electricity. < OUT, YOU IMPOSTER! OUT, YOU TAINTED-- >

Growling himself, Jack barely pulled himself together enough to make an escape with the girl in tow. There was no use trying to fight, and he could only hope if certain people were out on the mission as well that they wouldn't stick around long enough to pay for attempted heroics.

He didn't dare turn his head as something akin to an explosion occurred behind him; he didn't need to, he could see the vines bursting from the ground and snaking up behind him. Not even his long legs would be able to keep this up, especially with his strength sapped.

His started checking cars in passing, not wanting to hold his breath that there was a useable vehicle still available, but desperate times called for--

--a ******** Ferrari. No God damn way it could possibly be...

But it was. The key was there and everything. Quickly he dumped his charge into the passenger seat and turned it on, unable to help but snort a laugh to himself at how ridiculous this was.

It was practically his duty to see this beautiful car out of danger. And probably his charge too, but a Ferrarri had been abandoned.

< What a strange mount this is... >

Do you guys seriously not have cars?

< I do not remember ever having sat in something like this. It purrs quite nicely. Some sort of large cat, then? >

Before Jack could string his partner along, the back of the car was dented as the giant almost-horse smashed into them. The girl was tossed into the dashboard, but he couldn't waste any time trying to force a seat belt onto her.

And thus Jack gunned the gas and wheeled his way through the highway, to Owain's delight. Anything to get away from that poisonous influence behind them.

Perhaps he had been too engulfed with the euphoric fact that he actually managed to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari--or maybe he was just enamored with being able to drive period after several years without any such chance. That was one of the things about Deus: you started to forget how nice certain amenities were. Like internet versus intranet, and like this beautiful specimen of a car...which was probably busted as hell at the back. Still, worth it.

Either way, he almost didn't catch the shovel heading towards his face. The car jerked as he fended off the weapon, screeching this way and that until he had the mind to hit the breaks before they careened out of control.

"Listen to me," he said as if he hadn't been attacked. "I'm part of an organization meant to help--"

Taysia wasn't listening. She was getting the hell out of dodge. One look at him--that scar, those words, that lab coat--told her all she wanted to know. And while she was still winded from the crowbar hit, adrenaline could overcome quite a bit given the right circumstances. She staggered at the beginning but was quickly making progress.

And apparently so was he. Jesus, he was ******** tall.

"I'm not into hitch hiking," the teen growled, trying to speed up, to no avail. "Don't want nothin' t'do with whatever ******** up job you have, alright? I seen the s**t you do already with the virus, I don't want your ********' hand outs."

"You what?" Jack almost faltered in step but soon cut across, grabbing her arm. "We don't have the time, got it? I need to get you to a portal, stat, or we're both--"

Screwed, it seemed like. The portal was closed now. Jack made an exasperated sound, while Taysia tried to wriggle out of his grasp with a distasteful look. Letting her go, he scowled at her and said, "You're stuck with me either way ********. Move it, legs." Either way, she didn't intend to stay--and she didn't intend to put up her shovel either.
