After the meeting he had with Babylon, waiting for a message from Hvergelmir was almost torture. If Babylon was right, if Hvergelmir knew something about starseeds, or at least knew someone who did... Maybe this situation he found himself in wasn't as hopeless as he thought it might be.

Babylon himself seemed to waver on optimism and realism in the situation with his starseed. He'd obviously had some experience with starseeds but not necessarily with damaged ones. And that was fine. Babylon had given him more to work with than he'd thought of for himself, and pointing him in Hvergelmir's direction gave him much needed hope.

"Thank you for meeting with me," Valhalla greeted, standing from where he waited on the edge of the fountain in the park. It was secluded enough and while he was sure it was a favorite spot for many to meet, it was quiet that night. "You were there that week, too... at New Years..." he said softly as he looked her over as she approached, searching for any sign of injury in the darkness. Her clothing seemed to make her glow, although he was sure it was just the reflection of lights from around them.

"I'm sorry... I knew and wasn't able to do anything," he tried to explain, feeling guilty that she and many others suffered so much at the hands of the Negaverse. He opened his mouth to continue when he noticed someone else with her. Another Cosmos knight? He quickly shut his mouth, glad the darkness covered the sudden flush of embarrassment in his cheeks.

"Uh... sorry, I didn't... um... I'm Valhalla..." he stuttered, curiously peering around Hvergelmir to see if he recognized the other woman. She didn't seem familiar, but his memory wasn't the best at the moment. "Did... Babylon tell you what was going on?" he asked, figuring he should probably cut the small talk.

One nice thing about coordinating a meeting with another knight was, in Hvergelmir's opinion, how easy it was. Their rings made knight-to-knight communications straightforward and immediate. Putting together a meeting with Valhalla had presented little difficulty.

"There's nothing to apologize for," Hvergelmir dismissed, waving a hand through the air as thought to brush his worries away. "I'm good at taking care of myself. And I didn't help you either. Let's just be glad it's over, and so many of us were lucky."

She drew forward, putting her hand out to shake. "It's good to meet you, Valhalla. This is one of my sister knights, Teide. Babylon's told us a little about your problem -- but I'm sure we don't know everything. I hope you're not in too much discomfort."

Teide followed Hvergelmir like an especially colorful shadow. She didn't know Valhalla, but what little she did know about his situation made it very clear that it was part of their purview as knights of the Cosmos. "Teide," she answered, curtseying slightly. "I know... a little. As much as Hvergelmir told me."

She fell awkwardly silent around the topic of the New Years kidnappings - she'd been there, of course, but from the other side. If she said that, she was worried that Valhalla would trust her less, and they'd only just met.

Biting her lip, she followed Hver's lead in sticking her hand out. "I'm here to learn," she said. "Like an apprentice."

Even though Hvergelmir seemed to dismiss any concern he might have had over the New Years incident, Valhalla couldn't help but wonder if there was something more he could have done. But instead of arguing, he simply nodded and reached out to take her hand in greeting. "Good to meet you, too." He'd seen her around, of course. It wasn't uncommon for paths to cross during large meetings or when things went south, but to actually stop and talk was a rare, precious thing and he appreciated that she would take the time to meet him like this.

He took Teide's hand to shake as well, glad they were both so welcoming. It made him feel a little less on edge about everything going on. "Babylon said you might know more about starseeds... and maybe how to fix them if they get damaged," he started since it seemed as though they knew the basics of what was going on and he didn't want to keep them too long.

"I'm not sure when it happened, but somehow my starseed was damaged... possibly when I was almost corrupted..." he explained, just to make sure they were all on the same page. "I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I can do to fix it, or... at least find out how much time I have left..."

He didn't mean to sound pessimistic, but he did want to be realistic about his situation.

Hvergelmir listened quietly to Valhalla's brief description, her expression taking on a somber cast. "Of course you'd be concerned about your health," she said sympathetically. "Everything we know about starseeds tells us how fragile they are. We'll do whatever we can to help . . . though I'm afraid you'll find that's not much. The cases we've seen of any sort of endangered or disrupted starseeds have been rare, and very specific to their cases. One of them was Babylon, of course -- Teide, you remember we talked about that the other day? -- though I never saw his starseed at the time."

She unwound her arms, cloak draped loosely over her forearms. "If I can ask, how bad are things right now? Are you in pain at all -- any discomfort that you can sense?"

Teide nodded for Hvergelmir's benefit - she was bad at remembering things just because she heard them, but she'd done her best to get down everything Hvergelmir had told her in preparation for this meeting. "Starseeds are strange," she said softly. "It takes tremendous magic to crack them, but you can break them between your teeth easier than hard candy."

Sweet, she thought, her stomach rolling. With a liquid center.

"My starseed's been corrupted and purified, too," she said, "Are you sure that the damage that made yours crack wasn't... physical?"

Valhalla nodded, wanting Hvergelmir to know that he understood that there might not be anything they could tell him that he didn’t already know, or that what they might tell him may not be something he wanted to hear. Still, he needed to know, at least to try and prepare himself for the inevitable.

“There’s been pain in my chest since that night, but the doctors couldn’t determine anything physically wrong,” he explained. These days he was almost able to ignore the pain since it was so constant, but it was always there. “I haven’t been able to feel auras, and my magic doesn’t work very well, if at all.” While he didn’t like sounding helpless, he knew they wouldn’t be able to do anything for him unless they knew everything.

“It’s possible,” he said in response to Teide’s question. “I don’t know how it was damaged. I didn’t even know it had been until Cinnabar got ahold of it during an incident in the subway. The only reason I think it might have been damaged before that is because nothing has really changed,” he explained, although now he was looking curiously at Teide. “You were in the Negaverse?” was how he interpreted her comment about her starseed being corrupted and purified.

At Teide's description of starseeds -- you can break them between your teeth easier than hard candy -- she reached out absently to stroke her hand over the back of Teide's head, comforting. It wasn't an experience a person should have to remember.

"Ah," Hvergelmir nodded to Valhalla. "I see." She unwound her cloak and proffered it between her hands. "Do me a favor and try this out. I want you to put this on and focus on it for a minute. Let me know if it has any effect on the pain at all, or if you can start to sense us standing here. It's been dyed in what's essentially pure energy, so it boosts the magic that heals you and gives you strength. If it helps at all, it might be a sign that your starseed's leaking energy -- which wouldn't be good, but at least tells us a little more about your case."

Even if it did help, the cloak itself wasn't something she'd be able to loan out long-term, since it lost its magic over time without a direct connection to her wonder -- but she could at least give him one of the stardust ribbons. Even if it only patched him enough to gain him a few minutes of borrowed time, even that could make the difference in a pinch.

"Babylon was housing two starseeds in the same body. As far as I can guess, the resonance of the two of them so close together was shaking both starseeds apart -- he was throwing off light from his eyes and fingers. His body couldn't contain what he was trying to hold. Instead of an overabundance, though, you sound like you've got a shortage."

She frowned. "The other cases we've seen have been even less comparable. I've seen a photo of a half-youma Negaverse agent's starseed . . . it was mutated. Misshapen. It didn't respond to purification the way most starseeds do."

To say the least. Bischofite had been in terrible pain during his purification.

"The ideal would be if we could take out your starseed to have a look," she admitted quietly. "But that would be . . . difficult to arrange. You'd have to be willing to wear a blindfold, earplugs . . . " Titan would do it, she was fairly sure, if she asked him to -- but she didn't like exposing one of her contacts to that kind of risk unless she had to. "I can set it up, if that's what you want -- but you should talk to Sailor Cosmos first. That's who helped Babylon."

Teide nodded. "Astrophyllite," she said softly, reverently, giving due respect to the girl who'd died so she could live. Hvergelmir's hand was soft on her hair. She looked briefly at her feet, and then back up at Valhalla. "I was a stone, but now I have been carved and shaped and polished until I shine."

Leaning a little bit closer to Hvergelmir, she said, "Cosmos took out Babylon's ancestor's starseed. She could take out Valhalla's, too. Probably. We can call her."

She held up her right hand, still healing from Piemonite's purification. The scabs formed a carefully-carved star of Cosmos. "She would come," said Teide, appealing to Valhalla with very carefully-practiced puppy-dog eyes. "She would help."

Valhalla watched curiously as Hvergelmir removed her cloak to hand to him, and he took it gingerly, not wanting to damage it in any way. It was made of pure energy? Very carefully, he draped it around his shoulders, holding the smooth fabric closed around him. Just as she’d instructed, he closed his eyes to concentrate.

“I think so,” he breathed, not meaning to sound as surprised as he probably did. “I can feel your auras. It’s faint, but…” And the pain subsided a little, just as she’d suspected. Valhalla opened his eyes again to stare at her in awe, thankful that she was willing to help him.

As for the Negaverse officer turned knight, he shook his head. “Stones wouldn’t have the resolve to change,” he pointed out with the smallest of smiles. “I don’t know if you knew him, but I’m friends with Wolframite. Although, now he’s Gevaudan. Cyllene, if you know her, is my friend as well.” Not was, but is. Even with being corrupted, he didn’t think any less of her.

And then the suggestion of taking out his starseed had him tensing in place. It would be the third time his starseed would be removed from his chest, and while he wanted to do whatever he could to find out a way to try and fix it, he also couldn’t fight the fear of what might happen. If something went wrong. The way Hvergelmir spoke made it seem as though she had someone in mind, perhaps a Negaverse agent…? Who else could pull starseeds? Except this Sailor Cosmos that Teide brought up.

“Babylon mentioned Cosmos as well…” he said, although he was hesitant with the look Teide was giving him. Babylon told him how Hvergelmir had been able to summon Sailor Cosmos by hurting herself, how she, as other Princesses and Princes, knew when their knights were injured. His thoughts turned to Ganymede, and Valhalla shook his head. “It’s late… it wouldn’t be fair to her to call her so suddenly. She’s still a person, right? What if she’s sleeping…?” He didn't like the thought of the potential stress Ganymede and others might have, being able to feel when knights who had wonders on their worlds were injured.

While he wanted to find out what was wrong with him, there was also the fact that he would be completely helpless once his starseed was removed. He was sure he could trust these women, but… if something went wrong and he didn’t even get a chance to see Paris one more time...

“I’ll think about it… I’d like to prepare for it… just in case.”

Hvergelmir looked at Teide's hand with more than a little guilt. "She's asked me not to summon her that way again," she confided to the other Cosmos knight. "The blood upsets her. She probably wouldn't like it if you did either. But we could still send a message with our signet rings -- any of us could."

To Valhalla, she said, "I've only met Wolframite once -- but I'm glad he's out. They had him in some kind of a shock collar like a dog. I know he was struggling with what to do for quite a while. The choice doesn't come easily for anyone."

Valhalla might have been standing before them as a knight, but Hvergelmir was worried -- he didn't look well. He didn't have the vibrance that most people had when they had their magic coursing through them. "It's your choice," she agreed, "and you can take all the time you need -- but please be careful not to wait too long. Babylon's condition deteriorated quickly, once it did."

She pulled one of the stardust ribbons out of the air and moved to tie it around his upper arm. "This you can keep," she said. "You just concentrate on it to activate it, like you did with the cloak. It doesn't hold much of a charge, so the amount of time it'll buy you won't be more than a few minutes, but . . . enough time to get out a message to someone, at least -- to call for help."

Stardust Ribbons (items to be handed out to others):
- Not rechargable (one-time use only)
- Holds 30-45 minutes of charge
- Activated when worn by concentrating on the item
- After 5 minutes, minor cuts/scrapes/bruises are healed, sprains are numbed, blood flow stops from moderate cuts
- After 30-45 minutes, moderate cuts/sprains are healed
- After use, ribbons become just pretty trinkets and cannot be used again.

Teide frowned, looking down to give her hand a closer look. "Oh," she said, closing her fingers over the scabs. She'd gone as far as to assume that the star-shaped scar was a right of passage, a sign of her devotion. She hadn't known that she wasn't supposed to do that! What if Cosmos privately hated her?

She made some anxious eyes at Hvergelmir, and then too a careful step backwards. The subject at hand seemed best resolved by Valhalla and her more-experienced companion. Teide might have worn a knight's cape, but she felt about as knowledgable as a page.

"We won't let you die," she said. "Not if we can help."

That would just be... irresponsible.

Valhalla stared in surprise and gratitude at Hvergelmir’s gift of the ribbon, moving his arm so she could tie it around his arm easier. He could use it to call for help? That would be good in a crisis when he was unable to use his magic.

“Thank you. Really,” he said softly, hoping she didn’t think him weak with the emotion in his voice and in his eyes. Even though there still wasn't really any information they could provide him with at the moment that would help relieve his concerns, he did appreciate the kindness they both showed him. At least now he had a plan of action, or at least more than he had before. He would try and meet with this Sailor Cosmos, and then... If she wasn't able to help him, he would seek out more drastic measures. Having his starseed removed from his chest wasn't an idea he was particularly fond of, but if it would give them a better understanding of how to help him, he was willing to do almost anything.

"I really do appreciate you both meeting me like this, and everything you've done for me," he said to them as he carefully removed the cloak from around his shoulders. It was like plunging back into a dark, cold pool without the warmth of the pure energy, but she had already allowed him to use it more than he probably should.

Hvergelmir worried a little bit at the way Teide retreated. She'd been doing so well -- brave enough even to volunteer her own past as a Negaverse agent, even though it must've been painful and upsetting to bring up -- and now something was striking against her confidence again.

At least the two of them went home to the same place, at the end of the day. They could talk over whatever was on Jenna's mind while the two of them folded paper stars to put in Mason jars and looked for dud bulbs on their strings of Christmas lights.

"We've done very little," she told Valhalla, "but Teide's right. We'll do whatever more we can, if it'll help you. We all ought to help each other more often."

Hvergelmir accepted her cloak back and folded it over her arm.

Teide swallowed the lump in her throat and edged closer to Hvergelmir again. She'd felt thoroughly cowed over the whole Cosmos doesn't actually like us bleeding all over everything thing - but she thought she had something important to add now. "I wouldn't trust someone corrupt with his starseed," she said. "Even just to look at it. Not even someone you think you can trust. It's like... when you're up somewhere high and you think about jumping but you have enough self control not to?"

She crossed her arms over her chest, feeling a sudden chill - or maybe just uncomfortable. "When you're with Chaos - when Chaos is in your head - you have the opportunity to do something bad and instead of saying don't jump, Chaos says do it."

She was sure that Hvergelmir wouldn't put Valhalla into dangerous hands, but she still wasn't comfortable with the idea. "They wouldn't plan to hurt him," she said, her voice growing quieter. "Maybe they wouldn't. Maybe they're stronger than I was. Able to resist it better. But they'd be tempted. It's easy to be bad when you have Chaos inside you."

Looking nervously from knight to knight, she hoped she hadn't said too much or spoken out of turn.
