"Does your wife know you're out here?" Oberon asked, exasperation in his voice even as he focused on trying to take care of the youma that decided they would be a good target. And honestly, if he was a youma, he would probably pick them as well. A knight who couldn't fight and a chibi senshi; why would a youma not attack them?

"She's going to be pissed when she finds out you got hurt. Probably cry. Probably make you sleep on the couch," he guessed as he swung a branch at the fanged, frog-like creature. He'd only happened upon the scene by change. Most would expect a knight to be able to handle a youma on his own, but nooo, this one had to be a dud.

In the midst of the chaos, Oberon could have sworn he felt another strong aura approaching. Hopefully they would actually stop by long enough to see if they needed help instead of assuming they had it covered. He was tempted to call out to whoever it was, but keeping out of reach of the youma’s long, sticky tongue was a higher priority at the moment.

“Noooo, you have to be a hero! Nevermind the fact that you can’t even fight. You probably do this on purpose. Do you have a death wish?? Do you want to die so you can get attention and people can cry over you? Is that it??” he asked, swinging the branch to whack the youma on the head.

“I’m… fine,” Valhalla said with a grimace, not just from the pain from the new cut on his arm, but because even he wasn’t convinced of his own words. “Of course I’m not doing it on purpose! Why would it?” he continued as he tried staying out of the way of the youma and chibi senshi, keeping pressure on his arm. He didn’t think the cut was deep, but he also didn’t want to risk making it worse.

“Shouldn’t you be… in bed? Or doing homework? How old are you, anyway??” he asked, and then had to duck out of the way, not from the youma, but he could have sworn the chibi senshi swung the branch he was welding at him in retaliation. The look on the chibi’s face was beyond exasperation and irritation, and edging on anger.

“Careful!” he stumbled backwards, although he knew they would benefit greatly with more help. How long would it take him to write a note to request it from another knight or senshi? And how long would it take them to respond and get there?

These days it wasn't often Vanessa went anywhere without John Jr. She had moved out of her father's apartment because she'd required a degree of privacy, but still spent more time at his home than she did at her own- not only making sure that Mr. Rae had plenty of fresh vegetables to eat, and clean shirts to wear to work, but also that Syrtis wasn't off getting himself killed somewhere. Since discovering that her little brother was a fledgling knight Vanessa had taken it upon herself to oversee his training, and also divulged the secrets of their supernatural powers to their father. So that Mr. Rae understood that letting John Jr do as he pleased, whenever he pleased, really could mean the difference between his having a whole son, or only part of one.

John Jr was under strict orders to have his cellphone on him at all times, and to never power up without her. Vulcan patrolled alone tonight because John Jr had a paper to write. On the significance of power and corruption in Lord of the Flies. She'd tried to help him, and then been forced (regretfully) to admit that she didn't have the faintest idea how to structure an essay- and why didn't somebody just punch that stupid Jack kid in the nose?

Unsettled, first by her own uselessness in the battle against impromper grammar, and second by the tragedy of Piggy's death, Vanessa had set out to do what she did best- kick some a**.

Vulcan was drawn to the energy wafting off of Oberon and Valhalla, understanding that if one signature was lonely, and two were having fun, then three would make for a party. She arrived moments after Valhalla stumbled away from the swing of Oberon's branch, eyes shining with the anticipation of battle, hands curling into fists at her sides. Vanessa had never been good at things to do with books. Almost half a decade had passed since she'd taken up Super Van's mantle, and the battlefield had been her schoolyard ever since. As Sailor Vulcan, she had joined the ranks of the Blood Moon Court, and then stood by while her teammates commited horror after horror. Had even participated in some of their sins, and then paid for them with guilt. From that Vulcan had learned the importance of both asking questions and thinking for herself- but she was puzzled over whom to help, here.

She recognized Oberon as the chibi senshi who'd ferried her to the moon alongside Hvergelmir. The knight was a stranger to her. The problem of the youma was straightforward, but Vulcan could not tell whether Oberon was trying to help Valhalla or hit him with the branch he wielded like a baseball bat.

Because something about the knight seemed... off, Vulcan moved to stand between him, the youma and the branch. The youma crouched on it's hind legs, bulbous eyes whirling in it's toady head. It glowered at the three of them, throat swelling slowly, filling with a black bile that stretched its skin to a point of transparency. A low rumbling started up somewhere deep in its chest.

Vulcan assumed a defensive position, feet planted, fists raised. She looked from Oberon to the youma, indictated his branch with a tilt of her chin.

"I dare you to poke it."

Would it explode? She was curious, but before Oberon could do anything, the youma pursed its lips together and spit. A glob of black ooze congealed on the front of Vulcan's bodice. Melted through the fabric. Burned her skin. She hissed and swiped it off. The side of her hand glowed red with pain.

Oh he was trying to hit Valhalla, definitely. He was an idiot who didn't even remember his own brother was a magical superhero, and yet he was still scolding him on his homework. Still, Oberon was very grateful when Vulcan arrived on the scene. Not only did she have the experience they needed, but the power to back it up. He wasn't able to greet her properly, more concerned about the youma try were now facing. Especially when it's throat swelled. He snorted softly in amusement when she dared him to poke it, and would have tried, by the youma suddenly spit out a blob of black stuff.

"Ugh!" Oberon tried jumping back and out of the way, but some of the ooze landed on his shoe, burning right through to his skin. He tried kicking off the shoe and sock in time, but there was already a nasty red burn.

"Be careful," Valhalla said helplessly as he watched not only the senshi who'd come to help them get hit, but also the chibi senshi. He hated feeling as helpless as he did, and ignoring the pain in his arm he quickly searched for a weapon with which to attack the youma. He found a rock, which he lobbed at the creature, hitting it in its squishy face but not seeming to do much else.

"Use this," he offered to the senshi, removing his cape from around his shoulders so he could push towards her. It would be better to use that instead of her hand to wipe off the acidic ooze the youma was spouting out. He quickly moved to the chibi senshi next, reaching out to untie the senshi’s collar, and used that to try and wipe the rest of the ooze off his foot and leg, then worked on tying it around the chibi’s foot to give him some protection, since his shoe was unusable.

”I can take care of myself,” Oberon frowned, ignoring the tears in his eyes from the pain of the burns, making to shove Valhalla away from him so he could get back into the fight. “My magic isn’t offensive. Do you have any suggestions?” he asked Vulcan, picking up the stick that he’d dropped in the process of trying to get his shoe off.

'I can take care of myself.'

The chibi senshi's words echoed in Vulcan's ears. Reminded her of the little brother that she'd left at home. The older John Jr got, the more determined he was to do things on his own. Since becoming Syrtis, his stubborn independence, insistence that he was strong enough to take on whatever the world threw at him, had only gotten worse. She was firm with him. He listened to her. Sometimes, though...

Her heart went out to Oberon, whom she wanted to protect as much as she wanted to commend him for his bravery. Chibi senshi were not known for their power, but it was not in Vulcan to suggest that Oberon step out of harm's way. As Super Van, she had wanted to be a hero. She had shown up for battle with youma in her mother's old dancing leotard, which was just a little bit too small and sometimes gave her wedgies. She had also wielded a crowbar, which was not unlike the stick that Oberon picked up again- and he was stronger today than she was then.

'My magic isn’t offensive. Do you have any suggestions?'

Vulcan tested the weight of Valhalla's cape, thought that it was both very sweet and inopportune for the Knight to be so concerned about tending to their injuries, when the youma was getting ready to spit on them all over again.

Was there something wrong with him?

Vulcan took Valhalla's cape so that it was stretched long between both of her hands, twisted it into a makeshift rope. The beast continued to rumble, throat expanding, fangs glinting in the moonlight.

"Get ready," she flashed Oberon one of her best smiled, vaulted into the air at the same moment the youma fired. A hunk of black ooze congealed on Vulcan's barefoot. She grit her teeth against the pain of the burn. Landed behind the youma with the grace and skill of a lioness.

The youma hucked globs of black bile at Oberon and then at Valhalla, spitting with all the accuracy and tenacity of a machine gun, torso twisting so that he could spit at Vulcan too- but she slammed her injured foot into its spine, listened for the crack of bone, experienced a rush of satisfaction when she felt them give in the wake of her power.

The youma squawked and flailed, vomited black ooze. The grass hissed where it fell.

"Stab it," Vulcan ordered, fit Valhalla's cape into the youma's mouth before it had a chance to refill. She yanked back with her arms, foot still lodged into the creature's back, forcing the youma's head up, exposing its throat.

Oberon stood between the youma and Valhalla as Vulcan attacked it, prepared to jump in as well. Regardless of how stupid he thought the knight was, and how much he's obviously forgotten, Valhalla was still his brother and he owed it to Paris to keep Chris from getting himself killed.

Just as expected, Vulcan had the experience of a veteran, and despite his obvious concern, Oberon felt another wave of relief to know that she was there to help them out.

He managed to dodge most of the ooze that was fired at himself and Valhalla, although he didn't glance back to make sure his stupid brother was able to get out of the way in time; Oberon was too focused on waiting for a signal from Vulcan to attack.

And when she did, he didn't hesitate, lunging forward with the branch to stab it into the frog-creature's throat.

Oberon let out a Yelp of disgust and pain as the open wound sprayed him with whatever was left of the ooze that had built up, only managing to shield his face, but his arms and torso got covered. Thankfully the ooze only lasted as long as the youma did. With their combined efforts, but mostly Vulcan and her direction, the youma finally burst into sparkling dust, the acidic ooze disappearing along with it, but leaving the red burns and welts where it touched his skin.

Valhalla watched with obvious concern as the two senshi attacked the youma, feeling guilty for getting in over his head and how he ended up getting not one, but two people involved in saving him from what he was sure would have been a very bad situation.

The ooze that shot out at them only managed to get into his arms, and the rest disappeared before it could work its way through his armor, but he still held onto his arm where the youma got him with its fangs. Hopefully it wasn't poisonous, but he knew he should get it looked at relatively quickly anyway.

"Are you okay?" he asked the two senshi, looking from one to the other with a mix of guilt and gratitude. "I'm sorry... I didn't realize I couldn't handle it," he admitted, taking a step towards them to see if they needed any help with... anything. Obviously he couldn't do much on his own.

When Oberon lunged, it filled Vulcan with a strange sense of pride. She hardly knew him, but his resemblance to John Jr -the enthusiasm, the determination, the innocence- moved her heart towards a degree of affection that roared with joy over the success of his attack. Underneath her foot the youma squirmed and croaked, but her legs were strong.

Vulcan was steady. The volcano did not tremble.

Once it was done and the youma had vanished in a cloud of smoke, her foot fell the rest of the distance to the ground. Landed in a pile of ash. She was beaming at Oberon, distracted from his injuries for the moment by the high of the victory that coursed through her veins.

'Are you okay? I'm sorry... I didn't realize I couldn't handle it'

Vulcan looked towards Valhalla, tilted her head to the side. Considered him thoughtfully. He certainly looked like a knight. All of the pieces were there- from the power signature to the armour to the cape, half-ruined by the youma's bile, that she still clutched in her hands.

The burns she'd earned for herself hurt.

Vulcan did not mind the pain. Not enough to admit to it, or to draw attention to herself when Oberon had gotten it much worse than she had.

"I'll be fine," she said, dismissing the subject of her injuries with a wave of her hand. It was the chibi senshi she had concern for. She returned Valhalla his cape, thanked him for it and then moved towards Oberon, hands outstretched. "Let me see your arms."

Oberon shook his head in disbelief at the knight, still wanting to tell him off for being out on his own when he knew he wasn't at his full potential. What would have happened if they hadn't been walking by? He rubbed his arms as he bitterly glared at Valhalla, before turning to Vulcan when she requested to see his arms.

He hesitated for a moment before finally holding them out for her to see. "It's not that bad," he said with a frown, knowing that it would have been a lot worse bad it hit his face. His collar and shirt he been eaten through a bit before the youma and slime disappeared.

"Of course you didn't realize you couldn't handle it," Oberon hissed, taking out his frustration and pain on his stupid brother. "He had no magic and no memories. He can't even remember I'm his brother," he explained to Vulcan, leaving Valhalla to sputter in surprise.

"What do you mean??" Valhalla continued to sputter at the revelation. His brother?? Obviously not Michael but... "Why didn't you tell me?"

Then again, it wasn't as though he and Peter weren't always very close... And perhaps he knew before but his memories....

"I'm sorry," he said guiltily to both Oberon and Vulcan, knowing that what he did caused them all to get injured. And he only stood there...

Brother.

The word was a loaded one for Vulcan, who regarded Valhalla in a different light after the news of his condition. He had no magic? Still, there was no mistaking his knighthood. Strange. Vanessa did not pretend ot understand anything about how their power came to be, but it interested her that Valhalla could power up and, yet, have no apparent concept of purpose. It suggested to her that Vulcan was as much a part of who she was as the rhythm of her heartbeat.

She examined Oberon's outstretched arms with a careful eye, taking his wrists with her fingers and turning them tenderly in order to get a more thorough look at his wounds.

"I think that these will heal. For a burn, it isn't... bad-- How could he forget you're brothers?"

Oberon had sustained injuries that called for tending. Her own foot throbbed where the youma's ooze had marked her skin. But Vanessa was stuck on this information, as concerned about Valhalla as she was curious about what had happened to him.

Why couldn't he remember?

Oberon winced as Vulcan turned his arms in her hand, even though she was being gentle. He was sure she was in pain as well, since she was not able to completely avoid the youma's gross, acidic slime.

He didn't bother looking at Valhalla, but instead glared down at his own arms. After a while, and he hoped Vulcan didn't mind, Oberon powered down.

"I don't want to attract more attention," he grumbled an explanation as he frowned. "My name is Peter," he scowled, taking a few moments to pull the rolled up sleeves of his hoodie down over his burnt arms.

"Are you going to tell her why you forgot we're brothers?" he shot a glare over his shoulder at Valhalla.

Valhalla frowned guiltily as he watched Vulcan take care of Oberon, and after Peter powered down, Valhalla let out a sigh and released his transformation as well.

"I was almost corrupted. I lost memories of almost four years," he almost grudgingly explained, feeling even more helpless now that he said it out loud. "Most identities I knew, I can't remember. I don't know if you already know me, but I'm Chris," he said softly, crossing his arms over his chest, wearing a zip up fleece jacket and jeans.

"I'll make sure he gets home," he added, not wanting Vulcan to feel responsible for either of them. An annoyed exhale from Peter meant he thought it would be the other way around - him helping Chris home.
