What could Wataru say? There weren't that many of them left here. Not enough to fill nearly two hundred apartments, most of which contained more than one bedroom.

"Yeah," he admitted gruffly. "Boarding up the windows sounds reasonable." And it didn't seem like hard work. It wasn't like he was required to use pebbles, right?

...except the other part of 'not using pebbles' always, inevitably, meant heavy lifting. "******** my life," he said, relishing the dated phrase. Sometimes it was nice to pretend it was still 2006. There hadn't been undying, then. Or power outages in twenty-two story apartments.

He headed up to his assigned room, shaking his head.

He'd grabbed a big box of sheet metal, and he set it on the floor as he faced the first window. "Let's see how well this works out," he murmured. It sure didn't look good, but who cared? The bigger problem was getting it to stay stable in the face of...whatever the undying had to throw at them.

...or just to get it to stay standing in the face of gravity's existence. Wataru stared in disbelief as the sheets of metal he'd assembled just slouched. Damn, and here he'd thought there was some tension in this s**t!

Well, okay. Did he have a hammer, or something? No, not on his person. Maybe...somewhere in this apartment, the previous resident had left one?

It was time to go look.

Did glue work on sheet metal? Where'd they managed to even salvage sheet metal? Wataru wasn't sure.

He'd found a stapler, though, and it was surprisingly good at getting sheets, uh, stuck to each other. Whatever worked, he guessed. He stapled them up against the wall, leaned back to admire his handiwork, and moved on to the next window, because <********> this. The dudes just needed to not be able to get inside, right? Well, unless they were infinitely strong, there was no way they could get past a window of sheet metal. Maybe.

Well, Wataru had a ******** more sheet metal, and two more windows to cover. At least he wasn't the person responsible for running around and obtaining sheet metal, he reminded himself. As much as it sucked to climb stairs while carrying a heavy load, it'd have sucked more to be out in the real world without a weapon.

Wait. ********. No, Wataru couldn't think of the city beyond the apartment as the real world. There had to be...

But there wasn't, Wataru thought. There couldn't be. If anyone else was still out there, they'd have been rescued already. He tapped his temple lightly and stood up again, dusting his hands off. He needed to get back to work.

Wataru kept stapling his way down the row of two soon-to-be-conjoined sheets, wincing briefly as he did so. This was some tedious s**t, but it was a lot easier to get a lot of it done on the floor and then staple it up later when there was enough to cover a window.

...and there was enough of this sheet to cover a window, now. Maybe his brief panic had restored his efficiency to him. Actually, who cared? He was getting something done. That meant Zelda and October would appreciate his presence more and keep him inside, right?

Yeah, he'd go with that.

Okay. Last window. He eyed it blearily, and then kicked his box of sheet metal over. What was the most optimal arrangement? His work speed was slowing but this particular barricade in progress was turning out at a far higher quality than the first two had been. Hey, you learned from experience, right?

Now it was time to just pop this thing on. He hefted it - it was heavy and kept it pressed up against the wall with his shoulder while he reached for his stapler. Ready? he asked himself. Then he picked up his stapler again and quickly handled first the corners, then the midpoints.

Stable? It looked like it was. Wataru stapled his way down the sides, running his fingers along the edge to check for holes.

All three of the windows looked pretty okay now, although the last one was obviously the best. Who cared, though? Now another part of the apartments were just that much better protected from the outer elements, and it was actually thanks to Wataru. Huh - that wasn't a bad feeling.
