He hadn't expected it, and why should he have? She was worth more coins than he was, so she should have been working to pay herself off first, then making up the lower cost. Saving him shouldn't have even been on her list of things to do today, but here he was, walking around free on Diana's dime. When he found her, he was going to kill her. Only not really, because that would be counterproductive.
Max caught sight of that hair again and hurried through the crowd after it. "Diana!" he shouted, jogging around in front of her. "What did you—"
Oh. His expression went from concern to confusion when he saw her bare neck. "How did you get enough for us both?"

Diana was at first surprised when she heard someone shouting her name, but it didn't last for long as she located the owner of said voice. She broke out into a grin as she spotted his bare neck, now realizing what he seemed so flustered about. The attendants certainly did work fast. She had just finished paying both of their prices off and had been trying to search for him, but apparently they'd found him first. Reaching up, she lightly touched the spot where the collar had been resting. "Looks like they work fast. I was trying to find you," she laughed, dropping her hand from his neck. "You look a bit flustered. Something happen?" She knew exactly why he was flustered, but she was enjoying teasing him for the moment. She really hadn't expected him to freak out that much. [141]

"I was playing the slots and they came over and started grabbing at me and I almost decked this one guy until he told me what they all wanted. They said you'd paid my price." And then Max had been angry, he'd been angry all the way around the casino until he'd found her and seen for himself that she wasn't still slaving over blackjack to earn her own way out. Now he was... flustered, like she said. It was a little embarrassing when she put it like that. It wasn't like he hadn't made a good dent in his own price. He could have paid hers in return given a little more time.
"I was just concerned." Max shook his head, a wry smirk twisting his lips. "You're enjoying this, aren't you."

"Mmmm....maybe a little," she chuckled, rocking back on her heels as she looked at him. "I won a lot of blackjack to get us both out. Sold a couple of things too. At least now we're free, yeah?" She'd been able to save him almost all on her own, with a little help from Monica and the Boss. She was proud of herself to say the least, and really glad that they would both live to see another day. He'd probably feel like he owed her, but she would never collect on anything from him. Unless it was going out to coffee. She could do that. "So sir van driver," she began, holding her fist out like it was a microphone that he would have to speak into. "What do you plan on doing with this new found freedom of yours? Any exciting plans or goals? Anyone you want to fight?" He probably thought she was acting a little crazy, but she was just so damn relieved that they wouldn't be bought by the casino or any other mysterious person. Their will was their own again and no one was going to take it from them now that they had it back. [202]

"Impressive." Max wondered if she had gambled a lot before all of this. He certainly couldn't—hadn't—won nearly as much in such a short time, nor did he have much left to sell. He hoped she hadn't gotten rid of anything that might have saved her life someday. And he definitely felt like he owed her. At the moment, however, he was as relieved as she was, and if she was acting crazy, then he was content to join her.
Max encircled her wrist with his fingers and tilted her hand-mic down slightly so that he could speak directly into it. "Well, I was planning on heading back to prison, actually. Doing a few chores. Punching zombies. Everyday stuff." He let her go again with a brief, toothy grin, one that faded to a grateful smile. "Seriously though. Thank you. It means a lot."

"Now I reveal my true plan. I'm going to have to ask that you wear a property of Diana shirt at all times and you must cater to my needs," she joked, patting his cheek gently. "Really there's no need to thank me. I did it because I didn't want anything to happen to you. We've gotta survive this and go get coffee after all. There's no way I'm letting you back out on our deal." She was really starting to feel all of this stuff affecting her, at least in a small way. While she kept trying to be positive, she wasn't really sure if they'd ever get out of their situation or not. Their chances were fairly slim, but she had to try and stay positive about it all. She wanted them to be safe and so they would try their best, and if there was anything she could to do make sure Max made it out of this awful place then she'd do her best to make sure it happened. He laughed softly. "All right. I won't give you any special treatment." At least he would try not to. He honestly couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't wear a Property of Diana shirt if she asked him to, though the thought made him feel sort of guilty for reasons he didn't want to think about. "We'll be all right, and we'll buy all the coffee we can drink."
Now that their collars were off, Max didn't quite know what to do with himself. He definitely didn't want to play any more games, but there wasn't a lot more to do around here. "We should... sit probably. Wait for something to happen." He found that it felt awful, not doing anything to move forward, but they had no choice. And to think he used to laze around his apartment for hours without batting an eyelash.
