Bing walked back out to the fence line. But he wasn't looking for fried zombies this time! No. Now he was an Officer, and his new job was to make sure the defenses were in good shape. From his time prying corpses off the wires, he'd seen what kind of damage they could manage before they finally expired from electrocution. He'd been given some basic tools to work with, and he was armed with the trusty knife he'd found in case he ran into trouble.

Time to start the inspection. Determined to do a good job of it, Bing stopped at the first spot he found with damage to it, even though it was only a small amount.

Dirt had piled up in one spot, either brought in by the zombies, or blown in by the wind. But he'd better get rid of it. No use giving the zombies even a small hillock to stand on. And there was no guarantee it would stay this small, either. Getting rid of it before it became a problem was the smartest thing to do.

He still had the trusty stick from his previous job, so Bing put it back to use. He pretended he was playing pool, driving the stick into the piled dirt, creating holes that soon collapsed on themselves. He made more holes in the now smaller dirt pile, and repeated ad nauseum.

It wasn't fast work, but his efforts eventually earned him a flat stretch of ground, and a lot of dirt up his nose. Tired, but satisfied, Bing made a mental note to keep an eye out for something he could use as a shovel next time. Not an actual shovel, though, since metal and electrified fences don't mix. He made another mental not to check for similar piles on his next patrol. It was probably just coincidence, but if someone was making those piles, especially if some of the Infected retained enough cunning to come up with even a weak plan like that, he'd want to keep tabs on it.

Okay. Time for another trip out along the perimeter. Bing took his knife, just in case, and shrugged through the door out into the water gray light of day. As he started his inspection of the area around the fence, he wondered that he'd never known how much work the Officers had done to keep the defenses up and going. You wouldn't really think it, or at least he hadn't. Working for the mob, he'd been more of the interrogation guy. Protection hadn't been his racket until one month ago, and that was supposed to have only been for a few days.

Now here he was double-checking the bolts on the fence just to make sure they weren't loose. Bing shrugged.

You do what you gotta to survive.

As Bing followed the curve of the fence, he found one hell of a problem. The limb of a tree had fallen onto the fence, giving the Infected a spot they could climb over.

And one had done so.

Bing grinned, taking out his knife as the Infected lurched at him.

Knives weren't his weapon of choice. He much preferred a good pair of brass knuckles, but Bing made do with the blade. Even though it had made it over the fence, the Infected must've gotten zapped a good bit, cause it barely seemed to be holding itself together. Bing's knife flashed out, severing the last threads holding its arm to its body.

The Infected got one more swat in with its remaining arm, and then Bing lopped that one off, too. With the Infected de-armed, it was short work to remove the remainder of its limbs.

Bing tossed each piece back over the fence, gagged the Infected's mouth, and pitched the torso, too.

Okay. That was taken care of. Now he just needed to figure out what to do about the tree limb...

Bing studied the limb for a moment or two, keeping a weather eye out for more Infected as he did so. He also considered what he had on hand that he could use. Thankfully, the limb hadn't broken through the wire, it was just weighing down the wires closes to the top.

Naturally, he couldn't ask to have the current cut off. He was going to have to roll this thing off like he'd done with the corpses. There were a good number of branches that had fallen inside the fence line. Bing decided to use them. He grabbed the sturdiest of them, and piled them by the fence. The longest of them was recruited as his personal pole arm. He stuck it through the fence and pressed it against the limb. With another branch in reserve, he pushed the limb upward with the first, and then leaned the reserve against the limb. With a boot anchoring the reserve, he eased off the pressure, and the limb was balanced partially on the branch. The pressure on the wires eased off.

He didn't want to risk snapping any of the wires, so Bing repeated the maneuver, cussing all the while, since it was quite the balancing act. But eventually the balance of the limb had shifted far enough that Bing could reach through with his branch and finish pushing it over the other way. The limb made an almighty racket as it fell down the incline. Bing watched it go, and then cleaned up after himself.

Not a bad job, if he thought so himself.

That last repair had actually been kind of exciting. Bing approved. Sitting around waiting to be rescued or offed by an zombie got really boring after awhile. And even if he couldn't count on a zombie breaking through the perimeter every time, it felt good to just get out there and put his muscles to use. A different use than just working out with the exercise equipment. That was just hamster-on-a-wheel activity. This was actual problem-solving, and so far, Bing seemed pretty good at it.

And wouldn't you know it, sometimes the universe listens. Somehow, a hole had opened up on the inside of the fence, leading down to who knows where, maybe the sewers, maybe just a natural tunnel, or maybe the Infected had taken to digging. But there it was, and climbing out of it was an Infected.

It lunged at Bing. Bing lunged back.

And that was that. He'd taken a little damage, but the Infected had successfully been reduced to twitching pieces. Considering he had a hole to fill, Bing started off by throwing the bits back down it. Hopefully entangle any others that might be headed up.

With that done, it was time to see how he could go about filling this hole, and making sure the Infected couldn't clear it back out. There was some random debri lying around, but no cement mixers handy. Damn, he was going to have to make do. Gathering as many different types of filler he could, Bing started by shoving as much dirt into the opening as possible. It disappeared into the darkness, but Bing could hear it hit bottom not long after.

He definitely didn't have enough material here. So Bing switched tactics. He started stabbing branches into the sides of the tunnel, as deep as he could. Creating a blockade that would take a damn long time to dig through from the bottom. Once a stable surface of branches had been laid, he rolled the biggest rocks he could find on top of them. Break through the branches, and the rocks would fall on you. It wasn't the best solution, but it was all he had to offer. Wiping sweat from his forehead, Bing jogged off to let the rest of the Security forces know about the hole. Maybe they could station someone nearby to watch it.
