His ribs didn't hurt. He prodded at them, and then untaped them. Still no pain. What the. There hadn't been enough time for even a bruise to heal, but. Hmm. Something strange was going on here. Dylan just didn't know what.
He was distracted from his thoughts by a loud roar, and he looked around for the sound, ready to defend himself. Nothing. Nothing except for the sight of fireworks lighting up the sky. He blinked, and then stared. Was he dreaming? Who on Earth would be shooting off fireworks? Didn't they know about the infected?
But nothing came. Not a single infected or undying, just fireworks. Unbelievable.
Where had the fireworks come from? Was there someplace that hadn't been hit, that wasn't being slowly surrounded by vines? Were they not fireworks? He supposed that rescue flares would light up the sky, but he didn't think that was how they acted. He wanted to find out more.
He moved towards the source, acting much like the infected that he had expected to be doing this. It lead him to light. So much light. So much electricity. Maybe it wasn't the light bulbs that had the campus so dim. Maybe this was.
The building was huge, and the sign read Delta Casino in bright flashing lights. For a moment he could pretend that the world wasn't falling around them, the lights drawing him in. The warmth, the brightness.
He stepped forward, and opened the doors.

The smoke hit him first, and the sounds. It was loud, people chattering, the sounds of the slot machines going off, and Dylan resisted the urge to cover his ears. What had he just found? This was a working casino, and people were just chilling. They had alcohol, and were playing games, almost as if the outside world didn't exist.
He found himself wandering around, mostly aimlessly, taking in the sights. This was just unreal. What was going on here?
Dylan was approached by a man in a suit and vest, who proceeded to hand him a fancy cocktail. He took it. Why not. The end of the world was hardly the time to worry about being underage. The man welcomed him to the Casino, explaining that they played with a thing called Casino Coins, and then handing him a stack of them. Okay.
It wouldn't hurt him to play a game or two, and maybe the prizes would be useful ones. Food or drinks, or something that might be helpful. He looked around, and then walked over to sit at a blackjack table. He liked blackjack.
He drew a nine, and a ten to start with, which wasn't half bad. It was really good even, and he was awarded 5 coins. Sweet. He left the table, planning to look around again before deciding on another game to play.

After a little time, he began to feel sweaty and dizzy. It had to have been from the alcohol, he wasn't used to it, and he had no idea how strong it might or might not have been. He rubbed at his blurry eyes and then, everything went dark.
When he woke up, he felt heavy, and sore. He couldn't move, with his body tied to the chair, and it was dark. He could hear others. This must have been a trap. The lights flooded the room, and the shock made him blink. He couldn't see. A voice boomed, and he looked around aimlessly, unable to tell where it was coming from. He couldn't hear it very well, and he strained to hear more, and finally, his senses returned mostly to normal.
The room was set up like a classroom, and there wasn't a person speaking. The voice was coming from the speakers.
They were welcomed to the Casino games, apparently their tenth, and a round of applause was done on the speakers before the voice continued. He struggled to look around, to see who else had been trapped in here with him, but was unable to move.
They had apparently been given a number, and one of them would be free. The rest apparently had to buy themselves out. That was a lousy prize, especially since if he didn't, they would apparently be bought by the casino. That didn't sound good.
The voice stopped, and then started again, asking if anybody had questions. He didn't. Even if he had, before he could open his mouth one of the casino attendants had come over and grabbed him and his chair, dragging him into another room.
There were two others in there, unfamiliar to Dylan, tied up as well. The announcer spoke again. They had apparently lost the last time, and now, he was going to be given a chance to be their patron. If he could buy himself out, they would be bought too.
Hard choices. Did he save the lady? Or the boy?
"I'll save the young man," Dylan answered finally. He reminded him too much of his younger brother not to save. They began to untie him, dragging the woman off. He almost wanted to ask what was going to happen, and he had almost opened his mouth to ask when the young man he chose dashed off towards the exit.
Bullets came shooting through the air, hitting the teen, causing his death. What? The announcer spoke again, and Dylan frowned. That was it. All he was going to say was what a waste, and that guess he wasn't going to get to be a patron after all. He was starting to get a bad feeling about all of this.

The door opened, and Dylan was lead about where they had started. It was more clear now why there had been so many people, they were all players, were all here in this game. He noticed the guards now as well.
He could see others wearing jerseys, and then some of the others he had seen in the bandits area. Had they all been healed as well? Been drawn here by the fireworks? They were all idiots, even him. They should have known better, known not to trust the unknown.
Well, they'd just have to figure out how to survive. They had survived this long, surely they could survive a little longer.
