The swelling in Voss's eye has all but gone away completely, leaving only a black ring around his eye. His vision and depth perception has returned, and like others, he was drawn to the casino (perhaps against all better judgment).

He's not a gambler and never fancied himself as one, seeing it as a foolish activity for people with nothing better to do with their money. Not that he's going to have much of a choice here in the near future, but of course he can't predict that.

It's not even been a full day since he got his vision back proper and he's already being accosted by bright, flashing lights, wretched smells, and way too many people and entirely too much noise. In other words, this casino is a fine concoction for a full-on sensory assault and it's taking everything he's got to not completely melt down from sensory overload.

As he's trying to center himself by twisting his fingers around his cane and tapping his foot, an attendant approaches him, flashing a big smile and shoving a cocktail at him. He wants to shoo them away, turn around, and go home (or a reasonable facsimile thereof at the university), but he's bolted to the floor and can't move.

This person keeps shoving the drink at him and it's really trying his nerves. He wordlessly snatches it out of the attendant's hand, hoping they'll take the hint and go away, but instead he has more things shoved in his face, this time a pile of coins. Professor Voss's face contorts into the nastiest grimace he can manage.

You fool,
he wants to shout, Can't you see my hands are full?!

This b*****d really wants him to take those coins, and with a frustrated growl, Voss stiffly leans the cane against the side of his body and takes them, angrily stuffing them into his pocket.

The attendant then gives him a spiel about fabulous prizes, games, yadda yadda, Voss doesn't care and he's having enough trouble processing his surroundings as it is without trying to understand what this person is saying.

There is nothing more he wants right now than to leave. What a puerile waste of electricity this place is.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER Frederich is a grim-faced old man with a wiry build, sunken eyes, and bony hands. He walks with a cane and carries himself with much importance, as he places a lot of stock in being seen as intimidating by others. Grey hair tied back in a short ponytail, ghostly pale skin, almost anachronistic way of dress. His coat is padded to make himself look bigger than he actually is.

"...I'm leaving," Voss finally manages to say, picking his cane back up and starting to turn around.

"Oh, no, no," The attendant reaches over and grabs the professor by the shoulder. "You should stay and play. Try one game, on us."

"I'm leaving," he repeats, yanking himself away. The attendant's grip tightens on the old man.

The attendant motions to the untouched martini glass he had planted in Voss's hand earlier and gently nudges it up. "At least try the drinks before you go. On us, of course."

Two guards step up behind him, staring the old man down. They really, really want him to play, don't they?

"Fine," Voss growls, taking a sip of his martini. "One game."

"Wonderful! Right this way, Sir," the attendant stretches his arm out to the expanse of the casino, where it is wall to wall with games galore. Voss looks around and assesses his options.

Poker? Too much human interaction.
Blackjack? Also too much human interaction.
That leaves the professor with the slots, noisy devil those machines are, and he takes a seat at an unoccupied machine and plunks a coin in, giving it a pull just to humor the attendant and his little 'friends.' He'll take noise and flashing lights over having to talk to someone he'd rather have nothing to do with (although he'd have a pretty mean poker face if he tried his hand at that).

A small sum of coins falls out of the machine; Voss collects them and adds them to his modest sum. He knows realistically that 'one game' wasn't going to be enough, and that he's going to be stuck here for however long until whatever criminals were in charge of this place decided they'd had their fun with him.

He gives a cautious glance over his shoulder, then spins again.

This is a pleasant surprise, although it feels kind of dubious -- in the real world, people never win at these things. He suspiciously narrows his eyes and gives another pull.

Not long after he collects his last payout of coins (double winnings! score!), Voss starts to feel woozy. Wobbling, he slumps over the slot machine and passes out...

When he comes to, he's sitting bolt upright, bound to a chair. He's dazed by the lights, recoiling back and squeezing them shut so he's not blinded even more than he was the day before.

Oh, great. This is some kind of human auction or game show or something, just great. He keeps silent the entire time, unsure if he should even speak at all as the creep up on stage chatters along -- wait, wait, hold up, he has to buy himself out?

Voss's eyes widen as they adjust to the blinding light.

'Any questions?' Voss has many, but he can't decide which one first in this state of disorientation. Before he can croak something out, his chair is dragged away and into another room, given a choice of two people to save: A boy, and a young woman. He looks between the two -- if only he could save them both and have everyone involved prosecuted -- and after much deliberation, nods his head towards the boy.

As it seems, he chose poorly. The boy starts to charge across the stage, only to be shot dead like a fleeing gazelle right before Frederich's tired, horrified eyes. He'd seen dead bodies before -- it was, before taking up tenure, part of his job as a prosecutor -- but never an actual murder before his very eyes.

The law couldn't save him here.
