Shaun knew better, now, than to listen to the radio while cooking. He was just assisting this time, something he really did honestly excel at. He found more of that precious sugar, some various and sundry ingredients (peas and corn, woop de ******** do) and...
"Hey, whats this?" he held up a strange... pepper? It was a pepper of some nature, small and unassuming.
"Taste it and see." came the droll response.
"Yeah no." Shaun had been the victim of too many pranks to trust that. He was not a fan of spice, and this looked... spicy. He handed it over gingerly.
"Its a ghost pepper." someone offered helpfully, "you don't want to get it spread out into the food."
"So... what?"
"You cook it whole - it adds flavor. You dont eat it though... hottest pepper in the world..."
Shaun whistled. That would sure add a kick to the bland crappy ingredients. he put them on the table and waited for magic to happen.

Yeah, the role of sous chef suited him just fine. Shaun was comfortable not being in charge.
Eventually, he was left to guard the thing as it cooked. He felt a little miffed – it wasn't as though he had actually ruined the other one – but he did understand a little. He was not supposed to interfere, but when it started smoking, he knew he had to do something.
He moved the pan off the heat and stirred it, testing it. “Needs salt...” he said to himself, adding some in before tasting it again. “Eh.” he said after a moment, “Good enough.” He set it aside to cool and tried to look innocent when the others came back.
Meals that day weren't half bad... not as good as anything Joy Ann or Autumn would have done, but not bad at all... With a little kick that Shaun said nothing about...
