Shaun was cooking – again – in the kitchen, chatting happily with other people as he gathered ingredients. The usual suspects – pasta, salt, the special black sauce that was apparently his good luck charm, and baked beans. He grinned at his selection and began to work that funky kitchen magic, setting it up in a pot and just boiling the crap out of it because, apparently, that was how you cooked...

Shaun turned on the radio as he began to clean up the kitchen. There was always an inevitable mess, and with his fellow kitchen people out doing other things, it was nice to have the company of the radio. was so glad he'd found it – it was very easy for him to become lonely, especially in the pitch black of night. The radio was a friendly presence, a soothing entity, a reminder that he was not alone, that the prison was not alone...

“Charlie, someone died at the mall”

Shaun tensed, nearly dropping his cleaning rag. The mall... that was where granny was. He listened, intently, as still as stone as static interrupted the feed.

“Repeating report from last night...”

“This shadow came out of nowhere, and it had teeth. Bit some girl in half...”

Some girl? Granny wasn't some girl, right? Sure, she was spry for an old lady, and badass... it couldn't be her, right?

Oh, hell, it could be her.

“Mall casualty in Zone 1”

“What!? Who?”

That was Shaun's reaction. Who? Who had died? He clenched his teeth and stared at the radio, waiting. Waiting for the inevitable...

“Someone named Rebecca”

“A girl named Rebecca”

“Oh thank god.” Shaun exclaimed, gasping with relief, “Oh thank god...” He didn't want Granny to die. Not so soon, not before he had really gotten a chance to talk to her, to experience... what, exactly?

He felt weak with relief and residual terror – after all, Granny's death was still possible. He had to sit down, and so he did.

“...and Rook said he saw shadows with teeth too.”

“Rebecca Fong killed in action following combat with Lesser Undying”

“ROOK you didn't tell me this!”
“WHAT”

“What did I do?”

Shaun turned off the radio and rested his head on his arms. She was alive, at least. For now.

He took a moment to breath, just to breathe, before he remembered that he had actually been cooking something. “Oh, s**t!” he surged out of his chair and went to check his porridge stew thing.

It took one taste to know that it was... kind of s**t. He winced. “Bleh.” he said. Well, people had eaten worse here, right? Next time he'd do better...

He gave the radio an uneasy look.

Yeah.

Next time.
