Shaun found himself in the kitchen today, mostly alone. Well, not alone. He had the radio, of course, and a 'chatty' pot of soup. That might have been an odd word for a concoction of precious water (which was oldish water at least, made drinkable by heat and the addition of stuff) and foodstuffs, but it was bubbling, and the bubbling was causing the ill-matched lid to clank against the pot rhythmically, much like talking. Shaun didn't have much of a choice about who he was talking to at the moment, and someone had left it there after their shift, so he kinda... had to attend to it.
Which, obviously, meant adding more stuff to it, and maybe something dryer to hold off the heat? He took out some grain-like things and MYSTERY sauce (his favorite sauce) and started cooking them together. He'd come up with a winner before, he figured he would again... right?
The pepper he dumped into the soup because, honestly everything could use more pepper.
And then, letting the soup chatter and bubble away, he started working with the grains, humming happily as he worked, mostly just to hear himself hum...

Shaun gave it until it started to smell like something, and then he gave it the usual test – a poke, to see if it was done or, heaven forbid, if it was burnt. No one liked burnt food.
Seeing that it wasn't burnt, at least, Shaun took his grains and the pot of soup off the heat – mealtime was soon, and that meant that nothing could be burn-the-tongue-off hot. So, it needed to cool.
After it cooled, of course, he'd have to taste it – he wasn't looking forward to that. Sure, he wasn't half bad in the kitchen, but without the talented Joy Ann or the awesome Autumn to guide him, he wasn't completely confident about his own solo abilities.
Tentatively, he brought a taste of the soup to his lips, tested it, and then brought a bit of the grains to his mouth as well.
“Huh.” It was edible. Would you look at that.
He gave himself a pat on the back, and started getting the eatingware set and ready for mealtime...
