Polar Gates
Danger Level: 1

Paths
--Southern Gate--

To say that the winters of Northern Canada are harsh would be putting it far too lightly. The summers of Northern Canada are harsh. The winters...it is another story. The Polar Gates are located in a province called Nunavut. A place so cold that mere minutes outside without your full body covered could mean losing whatever appendage is bare to the cold. These climates are inhospitable at best, and they have claimed many civilian lives, and even a few of the baiters who went into this place unaware of the dangers that they face. The teleportation zone is within an ex-military base within the icy wastelands of Nunavut. There was a time when the summers would bring about a general thaw, and the ground would peek out from the snow, but not any more. After you leave the military compound (a fairly large complex built beneath the frozen ground) be it summer or winter, you best be prepared for the cold.

There are very few civilizations that are located this far to the north, but B.A.I.T.R decided to use this location as one of their tele-zones due to the fact that it is relatively safe (sightings of A.I. Cores here are slim) and there are many things that could be of interest to historians, as technological advancement took nearly zero steps into these lands. Even still, there are tribes of Inuits who believe the monsters they see to be mythical creatures, and who know nothing of the civilized world. Though, it is said, that buried beneath the ice of these lands, there are secrets that no scientist on earth has been able to find.

When they left, Kawa-kun immediately confirmed her own suspicions. At least, their lack of normalcy from what he was describing. She would admit, she still didn't understand, but was glad to know she was right to be confused about those two effects. So, when asked about them, she replied in the positive. Those two things did in fact occur, pretty much exactly as she would have explained them. He was peeling like a rotten fruit, and his voice was double layered. As Akio went on to explain his theory, or rather process of elimination, Thre became more convinced that this Acel was a bad guy.

She could draw a few parallels between them, they were both not human, they both had strange abilities due to this fact, they both changed how they look when they used these abilities. That, however, was where the similarities ended. She kept her mind and control of her body when she used her abilities, hell she even decided when she used them. He both went insane, and lost most control. She was surprised that he never attacked them, but it was a very likely outcome.

As they walked back, Ilya deemed it necessary to pull the same thing she did with Kawa-kun. He asked so many questions, she eventually just tuned him out. Which, unfortunately, led to Summer picking that exact moment to start up a conversation of her own. Why was this unfortunate? Well, Summer appears to desire to use her new found back bone to give Thre life lessons. Explaining to the young woman that they were about to go on a mission together, and that she couldn't afford negative emotions towards anyone she was going on a mission with.

Thre at first argued that her bad feelings about that snake b*****d were completely correct, but eventually Summer managed to beat her down into accepting that not everyone was that bad. It was literally impossible for everyone to be terrible people. Though, ultimately, Summer won because she played on Thre's crush on that Kawaguchi fellow. Stating that he was a Baiter, and she trusted him.

With that in mind she decided she would try to be nice to Corrinne, but she wouldn't hold back. If Corrinne insulted her, then she would make sure not to hold her tongue. However, if things worked out, she wouldn't mind being her friend.

Reaching the Mission Room took much less time than she would have figured, that or the conversation with Summer took way more time than it felt like. She listened to the mission parameters, which seemed really easy, though it did put her on edge. The knowledge that several Baiters have tried this and haven't come back was just a bit unnerving. She flashed her badge though, not allowing herself to turn back now.

How uncool would it look in front of Kawa-kun?

Once more she headed off first, walking towards the portal without a moment of hesitation, a combination of wanting to look mature, something in her brain convincing her this was the best idea, and honest excitement. Two completely new places in one day? How ******** awesome was that?

That was the line of thought she was basking in when the light tore her apart, dropping her with the nausea. It promptly ended. Obviously, feeling like she was about ready to vomit was unpleasant, but the whole area was freezing cold! A special kind of freezing cold! The kind that bit you so hard, that if you weren't careful, those teeth will rip your limbs from you.

So, as quick as she could, working through the fact that every motion caused her stomach to tumble more, she pulled off her back pack and pulled out a set of brown winter clothing, the inside of which was lined with what looked like wool. She quickly dressed in this set of clothing, just pulling them over what she was already wearing, figuring layers would be much more helpful here.

Once everyone was there, she would suggest they make a plan, and figure out who's gonna stand where.

Once Corrinne was back, things progressed as normal. She handed the kind secretary her badge, and they were finally registered to do their mission in the Polar Gates. The mission itself was easy enough, only really having to go up and grab some information on a terminal and blink out again. Perhaps they’d find all the missing Baiters up there as well? That would be pretty good, all things considered. People would think rather highly of them, and Akio was always down for that, even if it was not actually who he was. But still, he had to think more about what was going to be on that terminal. The information was what they needed and what the mission was actually about. Sadly, he wasn’t much in a position to go out of his way to find other Baiters who had gone off and either died or vanished. Sure, if they were found, he would do his best to help, but he wouldn’t exactly try to find them. He guessed, though, that either Ilya or Corrinne would want to find them, so he said nothing. Why was it his business?

But whatever, they needed to move along and do their mission. Corrinne was back, so they were finally on their way. Corrinne seemed patient, answering all Ilya’s questions with small hints of French tickling her sentences. It was rather interesting to hear, but he didn’t attempt to decipher what the hell it was that she said. He had enough of a headache translating words into English before he spoke. So, instead, he let them speak among themselves and continued on his way to the teleportals where they would disappear, instantaneously transported to the Polar Gates. Thre went through first, likely trying to make an impression on him, followed soon after by a chuckling Akio.

The cold hit him like a brick wall. Sure, he was from Hokkaido and the winters there were very harsh, but he neglected to ready himself for the cold that was now chilling his bones. “‘Kushō, soreha shib’reru nodes’...” he muttered, slipping into his native tongue for a moment before reaching into his little knapsack thing and pulling out a jacket. It was a long black coat that fit him rather well, hugging along his frame beautifully. It was line with black faux fur and fell to about his knees, keeping him warm and cozy in this god forsaken place. However, he did know that if he weren’t a Baiter the jacket would do next to nothing.

Before he did anything, Akio sent a quick text to Katya, stating in short broken sentences that they were in Canada extracting information from some terminal in a military base. A simple mission. He then took a quick look around, finding the one that had beaten him to the punch, walking up to her before the others showed up. “Aight, I dunno where this terminal thing is, but we’ll get to it eventually. If you and the white one wanna go off and try to find the other Baiters, you can. Or, you can take Frenchie. Your pick. Either way, I’m nabbing that terminal A.S.A.P.” Akio spelled out the term, rather than saying it as a word, showing just how not used to English he still was.

It wasn’t long after he said this that the other two followed suit and then announced his plans to the rest of the group. “I’m going to head out to find the terminal. Whoever wants to go with me best follow quickly. The other two best group up and see if you can find the missing Baiters.” Reaching once again into his trusty knapsack, Akio pulled out four tiny earpieces and handed one to each person there. “Radios. Just stick em in your ear and it makes communication easier. Let me know if you find anything interesting.” And with that, he was off, placing the small ear piece in his ear as he walked off in search of the terminal.

Boy, was it cold, too. He almost actually caught himself shivering! The only word he could even think of to describe it was in Japanese, specifically from Hokkaido dialect that actually had no English translation. Shibareru. With a laugh, he placed a finger on the earpiece, activating it for a moment to speak to his companions, “Hope you guys brought a jacket.” Whatever the answer would be, he would continue on his way, shoving his hands into his pockets so they wouldn’t feel too cold. He had gloves in his bag as well, but they were mostly used for tech rather than keeping his hands warm.

The place… Actually, oddly reminded him of home in the winter, just worse. Come to think of it, it was August, was it not? Damn, he didn’t wanna think about this place in the winter. Surrounding him was not just snow, either, but icicle ridden frozen metal from a long broken down military base. It seemed like it had been a few hundred years since the places was even somewhat taken care of, or even stepped in. But… That could just be the snowfall. It was cold and damp, making him feel rather glad for being born in the cold, and glad he worse some pretty damn good boots.

The sound of snow crunching under his shoes made him feel somewhat homesick, and at the same time comforted. Akio almost smiled a little, barely listening to whatever Thre was yammering on about. Well, that was a bit harsh. Akio was actually listening to her fairly interesting story about her time in the mountains, her having wrestled a bear of some sort, but he could help but tune her out every so often just to hear the crunch of snow beneath their feet. He wasn’t quite sure where this terminal was, but oddly enough he didn’t quite care how long it took to find it. At the moment, it was a calm stroll through the place, not really having to worry about making haste to do much of anything. At least he felt that way, he wasn’t sure how the others would really take it. It sounded like the kids were from some place like Russia, but he was unsure about Corrinne. She was from Paris, and as far as he knew it didn’t get THAT cold there, did it? He wasn’t one for geography, to be perfectly honest.

After about ten minutes of walking and talking about wrestling bears, Akio finally spotted something that seemed to be… glowing. Akio signaled for her to stop talking, raising a hand in the air for her to see. “I think that’s our objective.” he stated, reaching into his back and pulling out a pair of gloves that seemed mostly normal but had lines of a faint blueish purple color that ran along the palm up towards the fingers. The gloves were made of some sort of mesh material, clearly not made to keep his hands warm. “Pāfekuto.” he muttered, pulling them on and walking closer to the wall that glowed. The wall was a translucent blue that glowed brightly against the monochromatic scene around him, very easy to spot. Akio placed a finger on the radio once more, he spoke to let the rest of the party know what was up. “Found the terminal, sending location now.” He spoke, his words lazy and glad at the same time. Before they could even wonder how he was going to send them his location, his gloves were on and activated - the faint lines now glowing and pulsating like a heartbeat - and so were his glasses. Tech was his life, his heart, his everything. So, naturally, he carried around with him everything he ever really needed to communicate, hack, program, and alter tech with him everywhere he went. This mission was no exception. Tapping on the air, he sent a small signal to their ear pieces that spoke the coordinates of their location, then sent the GPS locator to their phones, which was actually a lot easier than it would appear to be. Once again, he spoke aloud to Thre, warning her that there was a possibility that some AI’s would be able to hear that signal, so to keep watch.

Once that was done, he set to work almost immediately. With his glasses activated, he saw the power supply, the inner workings of the machines, and various other things. The problem was… The terminal was blocked off from access, and he needed to get past what seemed to be a shield into a room; one that was full of people. The missing Baiters. There was a handful of them, most of them looking rather frail and cold. Their skin seemed to be frost bitten, every single one of them huddled together for what little warmth they could get. Surrounding the door was an enormous amount of blood and even a couple dead bodies. Fresh dead bodies.

Strewn around them were various broken objects, as if something went out of its way to crush everything they had on them. A slight gasp escaped Akios mouth as he came to a realization… No, they didn’t actually know, did they? That the cores were what kept them alive? Suddenly Akio felt sick, very, very sick… He only barely kept from heaving as he forced himself to walk forward, covering his mouth and nose to hopefully make his time a lot easier. It didn’t, but he could at least try. When he made it to the shield wall, he tried to avoid looking at the people still inside the small room. He could tell they were all looking at him, or the ones that were alive were. He could read their heat signatures from where he was and things were looking grim. It wouldn’t be too long before at least one of them died, so Akio had to act fast. He did a quick look over of the shield, trying to figure out how it worked before tapping on the surface with the glove. Immediately a dark purple dot which glowed very similarly to the gloves appeared, then four more where Akio tapped again with unsteady fingers.

To whoever was watching, it was very clear that Akio was not doing okay, but forced himself to continue despite being perhaps seconds from losing his lunch, or his mind. Akio felt like he could barely breath, like there was a knot the size of a grapefruit in his stomach. He wanted to throw up, to leave, to hide in his bed for an undetermined amount of time, to cry. But he did none of that, focusing instead on the task at hand. Perhaps… Perhaps if he could just get these people out on time… Then his efforts would be in vein, or perhaps it would all be okay, right? Gritting his teeth, Akio continued, opening up window after window to see if he could hack the shield open. He only then remembered that there was a kid with him, someone who likely was just doing just as bad as he was. “How are we doing, Thre?” he asked his normally cool and collected voice shaking, trying to keep his mind away from the scene before him, trying his best to ignore that one of the heat signatures was fading a lot faster than the others, desperately trying to not think about the fact that one of the heart beats slowly faded into nothing. ‘Breath… Just breath…’ he thought to himself, We’ll get out of here soon enough.

Ilya couldn’t be happier that Corrinne was kind and patient when it came to his questioning. He was simply so curious about her and everything around him that he really couldn’t help it! Most of the people he had met up until this point were cold or unforgiving, or they only looked at him with eyes that showed either pity or sympathy. Even the guards at the facility who kept his existence a secret who were kind to him gave him this look that said they felt bad for him even existing. So, naturally, when he met someone like Corrinne he immediately wanted to be friends with her. So, the boy kept talking at her, continuously asking questions so he could get to know her before they stepped into the portal for his second time that day.

But soon, they actually had a mission to go on and were forced to be on their way. When they all finally stepped through the portal, he could see that Kawa and Thre were already discussing a plan. Or, rather, Kawa was stating how the plan was going to go rather than letting others do what they wanted. That was fine with him, though, he wasn’t much one for plans. Ilya was the kind of kid who liked to do as things became necessary. Kawa then handed out little ear piece that would allow them to communicate fully when it was necessary.
“Oh, this is so cute!” ilya exclaimed, examining the small little electronic that fit snuggly into his ear. It was small and black with a little glowing dot on the outside that showed it was activated. Putting it in his ear, he immediately tested it, making sure he knew how it worked before he wandered off, especially since Kawa neglected to explain how it functioned. Whatever it was, they were soon split up into small groups and Ilya was off wandering around with Corrinne.

The little boy grinned, wanting so badly to play in the snow but knew full well that he would probably get in trouble if he would. But it looked so soft and fluffy! He wanted so badly to jump into it! Ilya puffed up, clearly irritated that he could have fun out in this mission, just like the one before. At least, this time, there were no dead bodies everywhere. It was about then that he heard a chuckle over the radio and his new friend mentioned that he hope they all brought jackets. At this, Ilya gasped, looking up at Corrinne.
”I didn’t bring a jacket.” Truth be told, though, Ilya was actually fine. He wasn’t quite sur why, but he never really had an issue with the cold. Maybe it was the fact that he was born in the middle of Russia? He wasn’t too sure, but he wa fine and that was all that mattered. ”I hope you brought one, though? I don’t want you to catch a cold!” Ilya was earnestly concerned for the woman, hoping that she brought something to wear that would keep her warm. If she had already placed a jacket on, it was okay, as long as she was kept warm. He mostly wanted to say his pun anyway.

The boy giggled, continuing on his way. He was just happy and excited, now moving on to questions about her time with her family, and why she joined the ranks of Baiter. He could only hope that she would continue with her patient answers and answer them all with the same concise, honest answers as she had beforehand. The conversation continued pleasantly as they walked through the snow, sadly finding nothing of interest as they wandered the deserted military base. It was so weird, this cold, icy place which was covered in snow, even on the inside. But that didn’t really bother him. It almost reminded him of the facilities his mother worked out, so the place didn’t really spook him. Though, to be honest, he couldn’t imagine that thre was doing well.
”I hope Thre is doing okay… ” He mentioned out loud, fidgeting a little bit, he looked up at Corrinne to see if she was doing okay too. This place, he felt, could be either very comforting, or very scary depending on who the person was.

He didn’t have to think on that for too much longer, once more hearing in his ear that something was up. This time, it was that the others had found what they were looking for! He send a large grin to Corrinne, excited to simply gather the information and continue on their way home. So, with excitement, Ilya followed wherever Corrinne said they had to go to meet up with the others. After all, he had no idea how most tech worked yet, nor did he really stop to think about it.

The walk wasn’t long, and they made it to the area rather quick, though Ilya wish they had took longer. As soon as Ilya stumbled on the scene his heart sank and his stomach knotted up. What in the world happened? Tears sprang to the little boys eyes as he clasped his tiny hands over his mouth.
”What happened!” He gasped, speaking through tears now as he stood frozen looking at the horrible scene of death and destruction before him. Perhaps he spoke too soon about the dead bodies…

Now, Ilya shook, but it wasn’t from the cold. He couldn’t believe the scene before him, now unable to breath no matter how hard he tried. Kawa was unresponsive, and Thre wasn’t much better off. All he could hope for was that one of the people inside the room Kawa was trying to get into was still alive. Hoping for the best, Ilya ran forward and pressed his hands against the shield to see inside. He choked on a sob as he realized that they were all in a horrible condition, barely stable and barely alive.
”We’ll get you guys out of there alive...” Ilya whispered to them, ”I promise.”

Things at headquarters seemed to be moving along pretty neatly as far as Corrinne was concerned and this comforted her. She believed that if things were running swimmingly in the beginning maybe the mission could be pulled off without a hitch. This was perhaps too much to hope for but with the young optimist beside her she decided to remain positive as well. The young boy seemed to fall naturally in line with Corrinne’s sensibilities and she suspected that the same could be said of the young girl and Akio, (though he might not like to admit it). She continued to chat contentedly with Ilya as they journeyed through the portal. Corrinne was used to this kind of travel so it hardly fazed her, though as before, she had the sudden urge to take a shower – this was neither the time nor place.

They arrived in a frozen wasteland, snow and ice as far as the eye could see. Instantly the heating system in Corrinne’s suit turned on and she removed a pair of gloves from her utility belt to place over her hands. She suddenly wished she had brought a scarf however as her head was completely exposed to the elements, though somehow her body seemed to manage the cold tolerably. There had naturally been winters in Paris before but nothing compared to this. She felt her lips, nose, and ears tingle as the cold entered her system. After breathing in several times normally, she could feel her body grow more and more used to the irregular situation. She suspected that her immunity to weather had something in part to do with her core, looking at her reaper staff she muttered a quiet ‘thank you’ before continuing on with the others.

Kawaguchi and Thre were already planning their next steps when Corrinne and Ilya rejoined them. Corrinne listened obediently to Kawaguchi’s plan and looked around at the base. A very inhospitable place, how anyone ever survived up here for longer than a day was a mystery to her. “I guess me and Ilya will be looking for the missing Baiters – you don’t mind that, do you Ilya?” She smiled and took Ilya’s hand more to share warmth than anything. She took the small earpiece Akio handed to her and placed it into her ear unconsciously, (she was so used to this kind of thing). And had to chuckle from Akio’s shivering, the children were all right but somehow this weather seemed to affect him the worst. Somehow, she felt that she was cheating with her fancy Paris Headquarters authorized suit, if only she could have prepared more, she might have found one for him and the children as well.

Soon, Ilya was pulling her in the opposite direction of Akio and Thre. She dutifully followed him, she could tell that he was holding back from playing in the snow – she also had a slight urge to make snow angles but held back due to the seriousness of their mission. Suddenly Akio’s voice chirped over the ear receiver about hoping that they brought jackets, in her case she didn’t need one but she listened to Ilya saying that he didn’t bring one. Somehow he appeared to be fine though when she questioned if he was all right? He merely asked if she was going to be all right with this cold, “I have a heated suit.” Corrinne winked down at him and bowed to whisper in his ear, “I feel like I’m cheating a little.

As they wondered, Ilya began to ask her questions about her background again: who her family was and why she became a baiter. “All I have left in the world, is an inebriated uncle I used to live with in Paris, he persuaded me to become a Baiter – for my sake and to give me a sense of purpose, I believe. You see, I was having a hard time deciding on what my place in the world would be, there were so many options, I could have worked in Core Development with my friend John but my uncle … he’s kind of a military man and I guess he thought I could better serve the world by becoming a Baiter.” She continued pleasant conversation with Ilya as they looked over the grounds. Nothing seemed to offer up any story on where the missing Baiters could be. A faint noise came from Ilya as he questioned if Thre was doing all right, he squirmed a little and looked up at her for support. “I’m sure she’s fine, she is with Kawaguchi after all,” Corrinne smiled warmly down at him as she squeezed his hand to comfort him.

As they continued on suddenly her earpiece verbalized a location and sent coordinates to her phone. A GPS locator popped up on her phone and she started to turn back in the direction they originated from. She continued to hold Ilya’s hand and speak delicately to him as they made their way to Akio and Thre’s location. She was so focused on her phone that she didn’t look up until she heard the shock in Ilya’s voice, ‘what happened!’ Finally looking up she caught sight of what was tormenting the boy – a strange sight of Akio working on a shield that seemed to be bearing down on the missing Baiters; half of them crushed and the others barely alive and looking up at them for help. Corrinne cringed and backed away out of instinct, she wanted to run away from this scene. But she was still holding onto Ilya’s hand and she looked down at him to see his eyes pouring tears, she wanted to gather him up and run but then she saw Thre as well. She wouldn’t be able to carry them all away, and then there were the dying Baiters – how would she get them to safety as well. Questions bore down in her mind as she tried to make sense of the situation.

Then unexpectedly, Ilya broke from her grasp to run to the survivors. “No Ilya, come back, it’s not safe!” Corrinne ran after him and joined the rest of her group outside of the shield; she pulled Ilya away from the shield and spoke sternly to Akio, “how much longer is this going to take?” She could see that he was busily working away on a way to disengage the barrier. Corrinne checked on Thre out of the corner of her eye and then at Akio, the two seemed to be trying to handle the situation the best that they could but it was obviously bothering them. ‘Who wouldn’t it bother?’ She thought to herself as she knelt by Ilya and held him close. “We’ll get them out, don’t worry.

One of the dying caught sight of Corrinne’s eyes and stared at her in pain. She returned the stare biting her lower lip; she began to rock Ilya out of instinct, as if she wanted to rock the dying to console them as well.

Immediately she was nervous.

Once her stomach settled down, and she was not fogged by what she called her 'Survival Brain', she realized what was going on. The place they were at was cold. Unforgivingly cold. She felt it deep in her bones already, having seeped in during those few short moments she hadn't had her jacket on. This all happened while they were inside the portal room. It was so cold inside this room, her body demanded a jacket without conscious thought.

This was why she was nervous. She had a bit of a weakness, and it was the cold. It turned her transformed flesh brittle over time, meaning unless she wanted to actively suffer from frost bite, she would have to handle this carefully. Even as the jacket that surrounded her, her final layer of defense against the stationary cold, she knew that if they went outside it would be even worse, because out there they would have to deal with the brutal and decidedly sneaky wind outside, capable of sending cold into even the slightest of gaps in their clothing.

For now, though, as her body strives to warm up, she took the chance to look around, upon spotting her amazing Kawa-kun she smiled brightly, before nearly rushing over. She caught herself of course, so while she thought she looked casual, she was basically trotting across the room in her attempts to hide how much she wanted to be by his side. When there, he gave her the option of teaming up with him, or Ilya or that other woman, causing her to grin quite the cheesy grin.

He respected her enough to give her a choice!

Already this tall, dark, and enthralling man was turning out to be entire worlds better than that snake b*****d. She didn't even take time to think about it. Her Kawa-kun wanted to go and do something he thought was important, she would help. That was all there was too it. She hoped Ilya didn't get upset, but if he brought it up later, she could just tell him she was trying to stop her jealousy and let him befriend her. It wasn't a complete fib.

Though, Ilya had long since noticed her crush on the man, it would be pointless to even try to cover it up.

As the next two came in, they were informed on the plan, or more specifically, their task on this mission. Ilya, the lucky brat, wasn't even affected by the cold. Like normal. She almost huffed in amused exasperation. She used to be so jealous of that. Probably still is a little bit. He seemed excited to be out on another mission again. She couldn't fault him, already this one was shaping up to be far better than the last one.

Corrinne... She'd rather just not even think about for right now. She really was trying to be nice to the girl, but the interest she keeps showing in Kawa-kun was simply unacceptable. The woman hardly looked capable of caring for herself, let alone the man of mystery behind her. 'You're not even capable of doing that.' A half laughing/half aggravated voice came from the back of her mind.

Apparently Summer decided it was time to bring her back to reality.

Good thing too, because as soon as she was focusing again, the very man that was the source of most of her thoughts was offering her an electronic device. She was glad he gave her those instructions, otherwise she would have been lost, having never used something like this. It took her a moment to find a comfortable means, but she got it into her ear correctly.

And with that, they set off. Trekking off into the blistering cold to find this terminal. At least this meant a lot of alone time with the object of her current affections. Whom, she decided, needed to know about her. She knew some things about him, so it was only fair right? So, of course she sets off telling him about some of her greatest achievements! The time she climbed one of the highest mountains in the Russian lands. The time she skied down that very mountain. Even about a few of the bears she had run ins with.

Suddenly the other half of this duo lifted his hand to ask for her silence, stating he might have located the location they were looking for. Sure enough, right up there, was a blinking light of some kind. They began to head that way, while Kawa-kun sent out the location via his impressive tech. He asked her to watch out, cause A.I.s might hear that signal, which she nodded to, turned as serious as she can, her eyes shifting around now, looking for any potential threats. She couldn't very well just shift right now, the cold would chew right at her flesh until she couldn't use it anymore. So she had to be ready to shift at a moment's notice, hopeful it would happen again, even though she hasn't taken any time to train it.

Nothing could have prepared her for what came next.

It was like someone punched her right in the gut, dragged an ice cold knife right up her spine, and grabbed her heart in a vice like grip. Her eyes widened as wide as they could, and her breath started to come rapidly. She shivered, but it had nothing to do with the ice cold that whipped around them. It was like a scene right out of a horror movie. Bodies strewn this way and that, their belongings layered on the floor and over the bodies.

Her stomach dropped at the implications, and she felt bile rising slowly, barely able to fight it back. They knew! They knew how to kill them! They knew they just had to find the right thing and destroy it, and it was game over! And given that most things changed to look like the core, it wasn't even that difficult.

Kawa-kun asked how they were doing, and no matter how much she wanted too, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop herself. "Bad! I'd say we're doing pretty ******** bad!" She bit out venomously, though it was probably obvious to this very man that she wasn't mad at him, just the situation in general, and lashing out was her way of handling it.

The only good news was there were still people to save.

Her eyes darted over to the sound of crunching snow, and any feeling of dread amplified. She was handling this horribly, and she's had to deal with this stuff before, having in fact killed people before, she couldn't imagine how Ilya was going to handle this. She wouldn't have to either, because the second he noticed, he broke down. His heart broke for complete strangers. He loved so completely, that he felt so much compassion for these people he'd never met.

It nearly broke her heart just to see him like that.

She only just barely held it together, which seemed to be what was exactly going on right now. She was just barely keeping herself from falling over the edge. This was just too much. Especially on their first day. Honestly, the only thought keeping her together was the fact that she really, really didn't want to die again. If she lost her s**t, how would she fight back?

This wasn't like the last fight. If she lost this fight, there was a strong possibility she would actually die. They would actually die. That needed to be at the front of her mind. That, and the fact that the longer they took, the smaller chance those Baiters had.

So, when Corrinne said what she said to Kawaguchi, no matter her intent, she couldn't turn her gaze away, the incredulity so clear it might as well be flashing in neon lights from her forehead. What kind of stupid s**t? Who rushes the guy doing everything he can to save a whole bunch of people? If they had been working together, sure, that would be something, but she just walked up out of nowhere, no idea how long he'd been working at it, no idea what he was going through, and demanded information! Not only rushing him, but interrupting his focus that he couldn't do his job!

Watching her walk over and attempt to coddle Ilya was the last straw. This woman already wanted to take Kawa-kun, now she wanted to take Ilya too? She felt angry. So very angry. She didn't know what to do! Everything in this situation was s**t! Complete s**t! This was supposed to be a redemption mission, and instead it was just garbage!

She growled in frustration, and decided it was time to do something productive. Hey, she can solve everything with violence right? She stomped over, grabbed Kawaguchi by the back of his surprisingly soft jacket, pulled him backwards, while her arm flashed forward, now a claw. Her now ridiculously sharp claws rend right through the metal and stone, small trenches the only evidence anything had happened.

This turned out to be the luckiest thing she could have done, for as soon as she did it, the shield flickered a bit and fell.

"He he, he he, he he, heh heh, heh heh."

A deep, disturbing voice was laughing as he took in the sight of the screen in front of him. More of those idiots were coming to see if they could get what was hidden within. Or even to see if they could save their ilk, after all they had been capturing rather than killing the Baiters, so they could kill them permanently later on. It didn't matter in the end; they were going to be their new play toys soon too.

"Heh heh, he he he."

He sent out the signal, though it wasn't needed as a short moment later, the new meat sent out one of their own, easily noticeable to the A.I.'s more advanced communication systems. Oh this was going to be so much fun! Immediately after he started heading towards the only opening in that direction, all the while that disturbing laughter leaking from his demonic grin.

"Heh heh, heh heh heh."

As he walked towards the opening, he started to drag his claws along the walls, creating horrendous screeching noises that echoed through the building like the haunted wailing of a banshee. The sound reverberated through the building, shaking the icicles on the ceiling. The only other sound that was able to be heard was that detestable laughter.

"Heh he, he he he. Heh! He he he."

As it turned the corner at long last, its own eyes landing upon the forms of the soon to be prey, it couldn't help the sinister smile that spread across his face. They looked so plump. So full of that red liquid. They would make fine victims. He stalked closer, and couldn't control the urge. He needed to get it out before the fight, otherwise they might not get captured.

"He he he, HAH HAHA HAH!"

He laughed uproariously as the arm equipped with a single blade snapped forward and impaled one of the many left overs, killing them instantly. They hadn't killed them yet, merely because they hadn't wanted to just yet. Turns out, saving them was a good thing, because it allowed him to vent that need just before they got into the fight. Ripping his now bloodied arm from the pathetic victim he lifted it to point at them.

"He he he, who's.. Heh hah! Who's next?"

A soft crunching filled the air, coupled with the occasional sound of rending flesh, painting a very dark scene. If one were to get a glance around this corner they would see a hulking frame dressed in shadow, and hear the sound of something being eaten, slowly as if savoring every bite. It wasn't hard to guess what the thing was eating, bodies littering the ground like discarded trash. If you listened close enough, you could even hear the soft, terrified whimpering, or even sobs of the nearby survivors as they watched this happen.

This was all there was for a while.

Then the sound of snow crunching reached the creature's ears, and its eyes lit up like daylight a pleased rumbling sound made in its chest. Here came more food. It was going to be fresh too! Not nearly frozen like what it had been eating. Immediately, it rose to its feet, only to pause when it heard the Harbinger making its way over.

The dark laughter made the creature want to smile. Oh how perfect! They were so much tastier when they were scared! Its body curled into itself, or so it seemed for a moment, only for a moment later to unfurl horizontal, revealing it had been moving backwards. As it moved, it raised itself further upwards, until it was finally on the roof. It quietly crawled over towards where the Harbinger was, just above him.

As the barrier fell, the Harbinger impaled one of the free meals, laughing all the while. The creature on the ceiling couldn't have found a better opportunity if they had planned it, for the next moment the Harbinger asked who was next. The giant creature finally dropped from the ceiling, landing with a loud thud behind the demonic looking A.I., revealing itself for the first time. It thrust both of its enormous claws off to the sides of its body and roared at them.

The Queen Larva slithered around in the broken down ceiling that was the Polar Gates. Already, she could hear the Harbinger laughing, and the soft crunch of footsteps signaling that their new victims have arrived. Fabulous.

She moved silently, gazing around to find the new toys to play with. Right at that moment, there was two of them. A man and a young girl who seemed to be suffering greatly at the cold. Or the dead and dying. A light chuckle escaped her mandibles as she crept closer, choosing to stay in the shadows, waiting for the most opportune moment to strike. For the time being, they still had no idea she was there. Oh! And then there were more! The Queen couldn’t help but click in excitement. So many new toys to play with all at once~ And they all seemed so shaken already! She was in love. Absolutely everything that was happening was so perfectly to her liking that she quivered in anticipation.

The red head seemed angry and worried, the adult male was on the verge of a break down, and the children were both in tears. Ugh… She was just so happy~

The next thing that happened wasn’t much to her liking, but there was nothing to help this fact. The Harbinger that she was working with couldn’t help but destroy one of the last surviving humans that were left in the room. Not just kill him, but down right destroy the poor fellow. Another chuckle escaped her lips… Right. Poor unfortunate soul~ So poor and unfortunate that he was now out of his misery!

The Queen took her opportunity to now slither down the wall and spook the lovely humans from behind. “Oh, my dear, go for the little girl~ She looks so juicy with that anger in her. I’m sure she’d taste delicious~” The thing said from behind. Oh how marvelous indeed. There was so much excitement that she could barely contain herself. Now, the question was… Who would she love to pick apart first?

The Witch Doctor chose to sit and wait, clutching his bone staff in his hands. While its friends would sit and restlessly pace and prowl, it chose to simply sit at a high vantage point to keep watch on the subject it was watching. While it was a reptile, it was also an AI, so it could be patient in the snow, watching and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

The reptilian AI followed the little boy and the woman when they arrived, but as soon as the relay went out that the other members found the terminal with the information on it, the thing took off heading in the very same direction it knew its comrades to be in. Now, it sat as still as possible, watching everything unfold. He watched as the Queen slithered around on the ceiling and the Crushtacean did the same, and he watched as the Harbinger leap forward and impale one of the few remaining survivors. The sight was shocking to say the least, but did not surprise the Witch Doctor in the slightest. Instead, it chose that time to rise to it’s feet and drop down from its high vantage point.

It’s feet landed with a heavy thump directly behind the Asian one, tossing its bone staff from one hand to the other. The male was already freaked out, so it was easily the best option to scare the human a little more. With a grin, it spoke in a slithery tone, “Well, well, well… It seems that we have some fresh meat~”

Its tone was slippery and slimy, its voice cold enough to penetrate even the strongest of barriers. It was meant to creep anyone who heard it out. But, despite it being so close to its next victims, it was not there to fight. Its talents were best suited for support, so that was what it was going to do. Stepping back, it clutched its bone staff close to its chest giggling in a strange way, like a child who had just gotten away with doing something naughty. “Slaughter them well. The walls need a fresh coat of paint.”

Corrinne felt a shiver traveling up her spine; something was close, too close. The faint sounds of clicking and insect noises could be heard around them. While she bowed her head close to Ilya - Thre stomped ahead of them and transformed her arm into a claw! Corrinne gasped as she watched the young girl pull her arm back and then thrash out at the shield. The shield flickered for a moment then fell. An elated noise escaped from Corrinne; maybe they would be leaving sooner than she thought. Though she was still shocked that Thre could transform her body; she was happy that at least the young girl was on her side. A faint glimmer of hope started to spread through her till the sound of malevolent chuckling could be heard about them.

A strange creature that seemed to be made of steel and fire dragged his claws along the walls creating an eerie screeching noise that made Corrinne’s lips twist in disgust. She could see him eyeing them as if trying to decide which he would like to attack first before he decided to go after one of the already dying survivors. Jumping from her kneeling position, she stood in front of Ilya with her staff drawn. If this creature decided to attack, she would be ready for it. It wrenched its bloodied arm from the now dead man and it made the other survivors look up at them and panic.

He, he, he, who’s next?” The Harbinger asked sadistically.

She was about to charge for him when the sound of scuttling came from above, a creature somewhat similar to her Reaper Crab jumped down behind the Harbinger. Corrinne stepped back in time to catch a glimpse of another strange insect creature slithering down one of the near walls muttering, “go for the little girl”. There were too many of them, she wouldn’t be able to protect all of them, Corrinne thought frantically.

One last opponent joined the party following behind Corrinne and Ilya, this one was too close for comfort. It jumped down beside Akio and chuckled, “well, well, well, it seems we have some fresh meat.” Corrinne clenched her jaw as she held the reaper staff in front of her and Ilya in a defensive position. “Slaughter them, the walls need a fresh coat of paint,” the Witch Doctor continued in his slithery voice.

For a moment Corrinne could feel the adrenaline high coursing through her veins. Her heartbeat hastened, sweat dripped down the sides of her face, her eyes darted about drastically as she looked at everyone in her group and the opposing side. ‘Four to four,’ She thought to herself as she calculated the odds – the odds did not seem to be in their favor. For one, the strongest one of their party didn’t seem to be handling all of this very well. Akio Kawaguchi, clearly the one with the most experience seemed to be having a hard enough time focusing on anything. Which was bad because Corrinne had been banking on the idea that he would be the most dependable. But after looking down at the weeping boy beside her, then up at Thre, she suddenly felt that maybe it was up to the girls to keep the boys focused on their mission, no matter how difficult that seemed at this point.

While the strange creatures began to close in on her and her friends, her staff began to glow again. This caught Corrinne’s attention and she looked down at the staff. Corrinne remembered the Reaper Crab’s lust for war. Was it urging her to fight? A strange sensation ignited in her soul, she wanted to battle, she wanted to brawl, she wanted to kick the living s**t out of these assholes. She was tired of being polite, and cordial, and even-tempered. Her eyes began to glow a yellowish green, similar to the staff. “Stay behind me,” Corrinne roared at Ilya as she leapt at the Witch Doctor bringing the full force of the blunt instrument down on its scaly head.

Turn 1

Things went from bad to s**t in, quite literally, the blink of an eye.

Everything had started off as bad as it were. It was colder than some of the worst blizzards she faced climbing the mountain, and harsher than many storms she weathered while traveling. Which was bad for her, given her body’s natural inability to honestly handle the cold effectively.

Then came the fun part. They found the terminal, and with it the missing Baiters. Too many of whom were dead, honestly dead. A fact she would need to stomach right now. If it started to look like she might lose, she would have to throw herself into one of her enemy’s attacks, to make sure they kill her so she can get back, and not wind up tormented and/or killed like these poor souls.

To make matters even worse, her stomach was close to violently expelling its contents. Kawa-kun didn't seem to well off either, how he was even able to hold himself together was something of a mystery to her. Honestly, the man looked ready to bolt. Get out of there just as fast as his legs could carry him. Ilya was in an even more terrible position than both of them, practically frozen at the sight that greeted them.

The only one who was holding their own, no matter how much it ate away at her to admit it, was that horrible woman with the staff.

As her arm pulled back, switching into her claws despite the cold biting at that transformed flesh like a rabid animal, she heard the woman gasp at the sight. That filled her a perverse pleasure. Maybe it wasn't fear, but it could grow into that, and that was something she could use if the need arose.

As her elongated claws tore through the device holding them back like a hot knife through butter, enemies began appearing, as though that was their signal to begin.

The first one that came into view was one she was intimately familiar with. A Harbinger. Apparently, insanity ran in the line of these creatures, for this one seemed to have an unending case of the giggles. The true horror of this situation came to light in the next few seconds after it came into sight. It viciously, mercilessly cut down one of the very few survivors. Its arrival was the precursor of the rest. A massive crab creature showed up, roaring mindlessly. A particularly disturbing looking bug creature, that was distinctly feminine, appeared next, sending chills down Thre's spine.

As though someone felt they deserved a break, the smallest creature showed up last, a tiny lizard looking b*****d. It was practically comical how it thought it was scary enough to startle anyone after the appearance of the three larger, more terrifying A.I.s. The only one who might be affected by it would be Akio, being that the thing did land right behind him.

As loathe as she was to admit it, Corrinne reacted first, jumping to Ilya's defense, and going right for the reptilian looking monster. Realizing the same might need to happen for Akio, she quickly stepped around him, hopefully giving him enough time to get himself together.

If he didn't, they wouldn't last long.

As she passed him, both of her arms quickly shifted into massive versions of themselves, the usual black flesh coating the entirety of the new limb. As soon as she did it she knew they would have to end this quickly, or she would rapidly become useless. The cold ravaged the black flesh as she pulled back one of them to thrust it forward, having every intent of turning the reptile into a puddle on the ground.

Her second fist following shortly behind attempting the same feat.

Turn 1
Corrinne: 39 - 42 = 3 - 100 = 99% Chance
Thre: 83 - 42 = 41 - 100 = 59% Chance

Almost the moment it jumped down from its high vantage point the red headed woman went in for an attack. Her eyes glowed viciously as she ran in, yelling at the young boy to stay behind her. Little did the woman know that this was utterly foolish. A grin spreading across its scaly face as she went to smash its face in with her staff. Quickly, it’s own staff came up to block the attack at it came towards it, successfully blocking the attack. “Fool! You think you can challenge me?” It asked, pushing away Corrinne’s staff forcefully. “You can’t even challenge the others in your own group. You are weak.” Of course, it was making assumptions but it was going to let that on. It took a few steps back, preparing for the other attacks coming from the young girl. So, it seemed that the two were going to focus on it for the time being. Very well… It must take the events in stride and make sure that it would not die. After all, it wanted to see what would unfold afterwards. It always loved some delicious blood splattered walls.

The little girl came running forward as well, though her weapon of choice was much more interesting. The girl had enlarged her hands to massive sizes, aiming to smash the Witch Doctor into the floor with a strong overhead strike. This one was more dangerous than the first, but it was still something to watch out for none the less. As Thre struck out with one hand, the Doctor scooted to the side, dodging the first attack with a simple movement. The second attack came at him quicker, but was no less easy to dodge than the first. “And you! You are a child! You have no hope to do anything in this battle. You will die just as quickly as this whore.” The creature cackled, jumping out of harm’s way so fast and easily, then using the same momentum to lash forward and kick the younger of the two in the face.

It didn’t have to be a powerful hit, as it knew that soon Its friends would rally around it and take care of these damned pests before they could even blink. As soon as it kicked out, though, the thing dashed out as fast as it could. There was no way it could stay in the thick of it and remain out of danger. High ground, stay out of the battle. That was the best it could do at this point, and that was what it would do.

Akio had lost focus completely, losing his mind to what had happened in his past, rendering him unable to see what was going on in front of him. He hadn’t frozen, but worked automatically as he typed away at the shield. It was only when Ilya pressed his small hands to the shield did he come to, even if just a little bit. Ilya’s words, more than anything, were what made him try his damnedest to focus again. It was strange, though. He was there and he could see what was going on, but at the same time he wasn’t there. It was almost as if he was drifting away from his body as he worked harder to bring down the shield. Shivering, he focused on what it felt like to move his fingers and how the cold bit at him ferociously. Now was not the time to dissociate. He had to focus on keeping the boys promise.

But before he could get to focusing and grounding himself once again, Thre ran forward and slammed her claws into the shield, breaking it down with a mighty blow. Unable to help it, he let out a yelp and dashed back, grabbing his weapon subconsciously. Now, unfortunately, he was hyper-focused on everything around him. It made him want to take off, to simply run away and never come back to this situation again. Damn it, this was too damn hard to cope with. Akio had to fight to keep his feet planted right where they were, fearful that if he were to move a single centimeter he would take off running leaving the rest to die. But no, he forced himself to stay rooted in the spot, coming to terms with the fact that now he had little to focus on and do now that the shield was down.

No, that wasn’t quite right. He had the terminal that he could extract information from, people to save, and then he could get out of this literal hell. But even then, he found it extremely difficult to even move. His anxiety seemed to have taken over in that moment, rendering him unable to move. Gripping his sword and gritting his teeth, he tried to move forward, to get to the terminal to make this move along faster, but he just… couldn’t! Damn it. God ******** damn it, DAMN IT. Then to make matters worse, something swiped passed him and into the room that held the dead and dying Baiters.

It was his worst nightmare lived all over again.

As he looked at the now impaled Baiter, the face melted away to something he desperately did not want to see at that moment. The face swapped for a more feminine one in his mind, a woman of Asian descent with long black hair and big brown eyes so full of fear. Her glasses had already fallen off and blood splattered over her face as she grabbed onto the AI’s spiky arm. Her lifeless body hung there like a ragdoll as the Daggerspine turned around to look at him, the things grin wide and crazed. Akio froze, staring at it with wide eyes, taking a short step back. No, this wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be… right?

But there it was, right before him as if it was real. Something that had happened years before right before his very eyes, leaving him with nothing but sour memories and a hurt soul. And it wasn’t happening… Well, it was, but this time he had to do something about it. He COULD do something about it, and that was vastly more important than anything else at the moment. It wasn’t Kim, it wasn’t two years ago.

Purple. His favorite color was purple. The date was the 23rd of August, and he was in the Polar Gates to collect information from one of the abandoned terminals in this military base. It was cold as balls outside, and he was able to save these people in front of him if only he just acted. ’Rush forward and attack the Harbinger that killed one of the survivors. If you have pent up frustrations take it out on it and move on with the fight. You're useless if you're indisposed like this.’ Right… He had a voice of reason now, another being in his head that could talk to him.

Breathing in deeply, nodded and dashed forward. Akio let the others attack what they wished as he took out his frustrations on the thing that killed Kim. No, killed that survivor. It wasn’t a Daggerspine that was in front of him, but a Harbinger. Akio drew his blade as fast as lightning, slicing upwards across the things chest. Now was when Akio did what he did best, coating his blade once more in lighting and bumping up his speed to as high as it could go. Right now, he couldn’t give a rats a** about his stamina, he just needed to get this over and done with, get into a place where he could think properly. Akio let out another swing, followed soon after by another, and then another. His speed was unmatched, moving from one attack to another with absolute speed and fluidity.

Akio attacked the thing four times, swiping the blade across the thing four times. Already, he felt better. He dashed back, positioning himself as best he could to continue on with the fight as strategically as possible. Sure, he wasn’t back to 100% like he should be, but he felt better after swinging his sword a few times and taking another long, deep breath and looking to the side to make sure his comrades were alright. Seeing that they were able to handle themselves properly he was able to calm down just a small amount more. His heart raced, and he still felt like he wanted to run away, but he could at least focus now. That was good. That was very good… The only thing left to do was win.

Turn 1

The Queen was so pleased with the current state of things. The most capable of the group seemed to be having issues, and the children seemed to not exactly know what to do. The woman attempted to take the lead in the group, but the Queen felt as if she wouldn’t last very long. It was all so beautiful! The Queen couldn’t help but laugh at the group, slithering from one end of the room to the other as she watched the events unfold. The oldest male was frozen in place, unable to even move he was so freaked out. He looked so panicked, it was beautiful! The two girls attacked her support, which she didn’t much appreciate, but her beautiful Witch Doctor dodged so fluidly and beautifully that she worried not.

Even if the group attacked them back, there was little they could do to stop their inevitable demise. So, as the group went forth and attacked the AI’s, the Queen dashed forward to the youngest of them all. He was cute and small, easily blending in with the snow around him. Really, it was adorable how he thought he could save the others~ They would, of course, all meet the same demise in the end.

The creature dashed towards the boy who had yet to make a move, likely too stunned by the situation to do anything. Her beautiful pincers would do the trick in getting the upperhand, and she would be able to snack on the adorable little child. Fear did make them taste all the more sweeter~ That foolish woman would regret making him stay behind her. Or take him with her at all~!

“You’re gonna taste so good~!” she cooed, making her first move to latch onto the boy. She grabbed his body with her long bug legs and attempted a bite attack. She wanted to ruin the boy, to bite off his head and suck his cute little juices! Her second attack was to squeeeze him with all her might, wrapping her body around him like a snake. Oh, she couldn’t stop thinking about how he would taste! How the little boy would FEEL between her mandibles and how he would scream when she ate him alive.
It wasn’t that she needed to eat. She just loved to do it.
