Freshman Quest: Healing 101
Charlie felt it would be beneficial to show the newbies some basic medical techniques, hopefully to keep you alive a little longer! Deciding it would be better to actually show them in a (somewhat) more sanitary environment than the Dorms, so this quest takes place in the Health Department (their make-shift Infirmary). There are a few lingering staff and helpers around who show you the ropes.

Quest Notes:
- You can do this quest as a group if you'd like! Just roll the steps as usual.
- There is a 300 word minimum word count for each person in this quest.

Step One: Learning the Layout
- Roll 3d6 in one post OR 1d6 in three separate posts. RP your character inspecting these areas. (if you roll multiples you can either Re-roll or say they inspect that area super closely)
  • 1: Pull out a drawer and inside you find their supply of band-aids and bandages. It seems like a lot but in reality it would not last long if things really went down.
  • 2: A locked Cabinet filled with medicines. The staff tell you that only one person in their group holds the key to it, and he is quite the cranky customer. They say just in case something happens to the holder there is a hidden spare key somewhere.
  • 3: You look down at a metal table with shiny instruments piled on top. Really to you they look like mini torture devices, best not hang around for long. In reality they are emergency items for surgical needs.
  • 4: You instead the tables that the staff have covered in white linens. There are some mysterious stains on them, red tinted.
  • 5: Neat! There is a working height and weight scale the team had moved into the department. Good to know!
  • 6: A small room with a door off to one side. Inside is a simple desk and a few chairs, clearly a private area for meetings if you'd rather keep things hush hush. There is also paperwork on top of the desk. One of them is a log explaining what had been used and who had been there and when.

Step two: Using Supplies
- Not wanting to waste their limited medical supply on trainees, instead they improvise using similar objects to practice with.
- If doing this as a group feel free to 'practice' on each other, if doing this solo you may say you are using a random NPC to test things on!
- Roll 1d6 and match your responses below.
- Please roll twice! So do two of them below. (If you roll the same number feel free to re-roll)

  • 1: Fake Bandages! Using some clean socks, pretend to be bandaging up a part of your 'patients' body that might have been wounded. Use clips to clip the socks in place.
  • 2: Using a bottle filled with water from the tap, pretend you are cleaning a wound! Remember you would never actually use the trainted water on a real wound, but this is pretend. In a real situation you would use isopropyl alcohol or something like it.
  • 3: Taking a needle and thread, sew up a hole in the provided tattered clothing. Not only does this show how to make-shift sew a wound, it also patches some clothing holes! Yay for being useful!!
  • 4: On a table is an actual knife. They ask you to take the knife and cut up some of the canned peaches nearby. Why? They state it's another practice but i think they actually just need help with food prep.... Handling the knife comes with a warning of 'If you cut yourself you sew yourself up.'
  • 5: Another station leads towards the earlier metal table with the surgical equipment, there is a note on top that says 'DO NOT TOUCH.' Oh, Ok. Easiest example ever!
  • 6: As a lesson in maintaining a healthy environment, they make you clean down the entire room.

Rewards:
- This quest is considered complete once every player inside has rolled all the times and made the minimal 300 word count each!
- For Course Credits: Take the very first number and the very last number you rolled in this thread and add them together. If its an even number, divide it by two and thats how many points you get. If its an odd number, add +1 and then divide by two.
- Example: I rolled a 2 and a 4. 2+4 = 6. 6 / 2 = i earned 3 credits for this quest.
- Example 2: 1 rolled a 1 and a 2. 1+2=3. Oops! Odd number! So add a 1 to make it an even number. 3+1=4. 4 / 2 = I earned 2 credits for this quest.
- Max credits possible to earn in this quest is 6.
- The numbers you add are your personal numbers, meaning YOU rolled them. If you have multiple people in a thread, they use their own first and last numbers they personally rolled.

Today would be something a bit more relaxing, but still important: First Aid. Matilda felt confident since she had to go through yearly CPR/First Aid courses to maintain her position as a teacher prior to the outbreak. Whether she was cleaning a cut or putting a tourniquet on an amputee, she felt she could more or less handle it.

Her first step was to acquaint herself to the Health Department turned Infirmary. Her first choice of exploration was to investigate the drawers. Bandages ranging from small adhesives to large wraps. This could definitely be useful to have in a pinch.

Rounding the counter, she noticed a height and weight scale sitting in a corner. While it wasn't what she would call particularly useful in an emergency, it could always serve other purposes down the line, such as the event where the group needed to measure inanimate objects.

As interesting as the scale was she needed to explore elsewhere.

Was there really nothing else in the makeshift infirmary?

In a back corner, Matilda managed to find a locker with clear, durable doors. Pulling on the handle is a failing venture. The doors are locked, and with good reason. The interior contains medicines of all shapes and quantities. Such a thing could easily be exploited by weak-willed individuals.

She takes mental note of the knowledge that one of the leaders holds a key, while a spare if hidden somewhere. If she ever managed to find it, she would have to make sure it stays hidden for the safety of the group.

The first task Matilda is given is to cut up some canned peaches. Taking up the knife on the table, the blonde teacher set out on her task while wondering what the lesson was teaching her. They specifically stated to 'cut' them. Was she learning hand-eye coordination? Perhaps it was teaching her simple knife skills? Whatever the case, Matilda dutifully carried out her task until she had a small bowl of finely cut peaches. She was used to cooking for herself, so it was actually pretty easy.

Her second assignment was cleaning. While she was a bit disappointed that she wasn't getting a chance to practice any first aid, she understood the importance of a clean work area. Getting a broom and dustpan, the woman began sweeping away any debris and trash that had found its way onto the floor. Such things could become hazards in the future. Spotting a wet spot on the floor, it took a moment for Matilda to find a rag to mop up the spill.

Standing back, she eyed her handiwork. It wasn't perfect given her limits on supplies, but it would definitely pass.

While Matilda had returned once more to brush up on her first aid skills, she was hardly going to stand for investigating the same exact items she had searched through previously. She wanted to know what all was in the infirmary!

Unfortunately, she wasn't allowed to search any further before she was ushered over to practice with some materials. It felt so lazy, she hadn't learned anything new from re-examining the scale and band aid drawer!

"Finally, something new I can practice," the frustrated woman huffed as she was able to retrieve a bottle of water and a cloth. Honestly, were they really expecting someone who didn't know how to properly treat injuries to learn when everything felt so rushed?

Tipping the bottle into the cloth, Matilda gently dabbed at her patient's 'wound' while her mind continued in angry circles. It was a good thing she more or less knew how to do all these things, and that she was just here to refresh her memory of certain procedures, or she would seriously be worried about her abilities!

Sewing? Was this an exercise in stitching wounds? If so, cloth was hardly a valid substitute. Couldn't they try on something a bit more skin-like, like leather?

Oh well, it was the task that was set before her, so she would do it. Who knows, maybe it would turn out to be useful. Threading the needle, the woman tied off the end and got to work on the tattered shirt. She imagine the type of work a professional doctor could do was miles above the work she could accomplish at the moment since she had no knowledge of the methodology of suturing. The best she could manage was looping up and back around close enough together that it left barely any space between each loop. It used more thread, but it created a secure line in the tear. Giving it a courtesy tug assured the quality.

Repeating the process four more times with each hole, Matilda held up the shirt in mild satisfaction. If anything, she would provide someone with a new shirt.

Stepping into the Infirmary once more, Matilda tried to see if she could find anything new. Walking past the cabinet storing medicine, she noted that some of it appeared to be missing. Had someone required medicine? Or had something been taken out for other purposes?

Matilda didn't even bother with the blasted scale. She felt like she'd seen that thing enough to last a lifetime.

"Oh, a door," the woman gasped, pleased that she'd finally found something new. Inside was a fairly nondescript room that left much to be desired. Other than some paperwork that she didn't feel she had the authority to browse, it looked to be a nice private area to speak in.

Before she could look anywhere else, Matilda was carted off to... cut up peaches once more. "Oh well, at least I'll be helping fill someone's stomach," she mused as she picked up the knife.

Sitting herself down at the table, Matilda slowly began peeling and cutting up each peach one by one. It was actually a pretty calming exercise once she got into a rhythm. Halves, quarters, eighths. Rinse and repeat.

Her mind was left to wander as she cut up the peaches. What had become of the other faculty from her previous school? How many had escaped... how many hadn't?

Shaking the brooding thoughts out of her head, she continued her quest. Being left alone with one's thoughts could be dangerous, especially while holding a knife.

Grabbing up another can, Matilda decided she felt like cutting up some more peaches. Popping a piece in her mouth, she savored the juicy flavor. Lately, the only thing she really got outside of rations was a potato. Fruit definitely felt like a delicacy at the moment.

Better stop at that, though. If they found her eating her project, the proctors would probably get angry and kick her out.

Finishing up the can, Matilda brought the bowl of fruit to be inspected.

"I think I'll try looking around a bit more now that I've completed my previous task," Matilda said with a stretch as she wandered back to the supplies area.

She paled at the sight of white linens tinted in what appeared to be dried blood. Exactly how recent was this... did she really want to know?

Once more Matilda was forced to walk past the medicine cabinet. It hadn't changed from when she'd looked it over about half an hour ago!

She didn't even bother going through the door leaving to the other room. the idea of sifting through papers really didn't appeal to a teacher who'd spent the majority of her days doing such.

Once more, Matilda was roped into sewing practice. This time was a pair of jeans with a rip in each knee. Feeding the thread, she tied off the end and began her work. Up, around. Up, around. over and over until she managed to reach the end. Testing the fabric by gently tugging, she found the stitching wasn't quite sufficient, so she doubled back to her first loop.

A second test proved that the knee was no longer in danger of coming undone. Repeating the process on the other side, the teacher held up the pants, satisfied that whoever got the pants would have a hard time ripping those seams.

After turning in the pants, Matilda was given some cleaning supplies in a silent command to clean the room. This felt less like medical practice and more like chores.

Oh well, someone had to do it. At least she knew the job would get done right. Taking the cloth, the woman started by wiping down the tables and chairs. Next she set to sweeping up anything that had fallen on the floor.

As soon as the last of the dust and debris was thrown away, she was given the all-clear to leave.
